A Collection of Franz Wright Poems and Letters to a Fellow Poet

1985-1992. A collection of 36 Typescript and Holograph Poems from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Franz Wright, with nearly half of the poems Signed or Inscribed, along with five Autographed and Typed Letters Signed to a fellow poet. Wright, the son of poet James Wright, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his book, Walking to Martha's Vineyard, matching his father who won the prize in the same category in 1972, and making them the only father and son to accomplish this feat. The poems in this collection were written between 1985 and 1992 during which time Franz Wright published several books. A great many of these poems were published in those books but appear here in an earlier form with alternate verses and different titles. Several of the poems could not be identified and may be unpublished. The accompanying letters sent to his correspondent are surprisingly genial and optimistic considering Wright's tendency toward darker themes in his work. In them, he encourages his correspondents writing, speaks about his own love of poetry, comments on one of his father's poems, and talks about his recently established sobriety. Nearly all the poems and letters are in near fine or better condition though a few have a bit of wear to their extremities.A remarkable and notable collection of poetry and letters from this Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, giving new insight into his life, his relationships, and his writing process. .

Photographic portfolio in blue linen box. 12 hand-pulled photogravures on Arches paper (15" x 19"), signed by Margaretta Mitchell, of women and children dancing in the style of Isadora Duncan at Berkeley's Temple of Wings. Duncan's influence is apparent in the flowing costume, the classical open-air setting and the graceful, expressive gestures. Quitzow and her daughter have kept Duncan's legacy alive for two generations, teaching dance at the Temple of Wings, where Mitchell has been photographing for two decades. Letterpress text pages: title, four pages of text (including historical photographs and text on the friendship of Boyton and Duncan in Oakland, plus a statement by Kevin Starr), a poem by Stephen Mitchell and colophon. DIE GROSSE BURGANDER CHRONIK [THE GREAT BURGUNDIAN CHRONICLE], "ZÜRCHER SCHILLING

Lucerne: Faksimile-Verlag, 1985. ONE OF 980 COPIES (this is copy #1). Sieges, Assaults, Floods, and Burnings at the Stake,All in an Imposing Pigskin Binding 254 x 394 mm (10 x 15 1/2"). 1035 pp. (in the facsimile volume). Two volumes (including commentary volume in German). Stately replica blindstamped pigskin, covers with multiple floral frames, small rampant lion stamped in black ink on each central panel, raised bands, brass and leather clasps. With numerous large miniatures depicting battles, sieges, assaults, floods, fires, and the burning of two unfortunates at the stake. In mint condition. The Great Burgundian Chronicle, also called the "Zürcher Schilling" (after Zurich, where it is kept), is the most original and thorough book from the period on the Burgundian Wars between the Swiss Confederation and Charles the Bold. It was executed around 1480 in the tradition of the Bern chronicles begun by Konrad Justinger in 1420, and it is the most comprehensive of all chronicles ever carried out by Schilling. The Great Burgundian Chronicle gives a unique witness as the expression of a genuine patriot and does so without the heavy censorship that characterizes later, "official," versions of the text. One of the most important features of the manuscript's illustrations is the landscape in which the events take place. It hardly ever corresponds to topographic reality, but is rather based on the artist's imagination. The viewer sees the depicted scenes from above, being treated to fanciful versions of little towns, villages, and castles, all carefully inserted into a lovely (but imaginative) landscape of rolling hills.

        Ingeborg-Psalter

Graz: Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt, 1985. Hardcover. Fine. Fine condition two volumes in slipcase. Complete color facsimile edition of the 394 pages (197 folios) in original size (304 x 204 mm). The manuscript contains 51 full page miniatures with rich gold ornaments and numerous splendid initial letters. The binding is an all leather binding, with all pages hand cut according to the original. The commentary volume has a detailed scholarly commentary. Limited and numbered edition, limited to 500 copies, with each volume numbered by hand (this is volume 194). The codex dates from about 1200, Northern France. Undeniably the greatest painting to employ ridged drapery is in the Psalter (Chantilly, Musee Conde Ms. 1695; ills. 190-193) made for Queen Ingeborg of France. The standard of the manuscripts illumination is such as can only be described by epithets of superlatives. Its full page miniatures are by two illuminators, one working in an older tradition than the other, but throughout there is a stylistic development which ignores this division and is presumably due to the common enterprise. The earlier miniatures, by the older master, have flatter Byzantinesque folds akin to those in Salzburg illumination, but these soon sharpen into ridges and troughs and the newer technique dominates the work of the younger master being developed to its furthest extent in his miniature of Pentecost. In all the Ingeborg miniatures faces are particularly plastic and rounded, but always with a certain pathos or strain in their expressions; they never exhibit the calm observable in the Westminster Psalter. Only the younger master, however, manages to give a convincing plasticity to covered bodies. As might be expected of a book of this importance, much discussion has raged about the date and provenance of the Ingeborg Psalter. The most recent definitive suggestion is circa 1195 in north-eastern France, possibly in the diocese of Noyon; but the debate continues.

"Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman!" Adventures of a curious character. [By] Richard P. Feynman, as told to Ralph Leighton; edited by Edward Hutchings

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1985 (ie, 1984) ¶ ORIGINAL EDITION (hardcover, dust-jacket) of the only non-technical book by Richard Feynman published during his lifetime, mainly responsible for his reputation at large. This is arguably the best-known expression of the 'human side' of a great scientist, and an enduring classic of twentieth-century humanism, not to say joie de vivre and "the pleasure of finding things out". More than half a million copies of this book have been sold in seven languages or more. -- ¶ The present example is INSCRIBED "For Mr McQuigg [from] Richard P. Feynman" in black ball-pen ink on the half-title (page [1]). Howard McQuigg was Feynman's longtime piano-tuner. They had met in 1961 when Feynman asked McQuigg to tune the piano that he had just bought for his new home on Boulder Road. Feynman himself was tone-deaf: He couldn't distinguish volume from frequency (which might explain his well-known enthusiam for drumming, by way of compensation); but pianos haunted him somehow: His first wife had been an accomplished pianist; she had taught his sister to play; they had sold Arline's piano to pay for her medical care; and now he had bought a piano for his new bride Gweneth. And so the two men -- the physicist and the piano-tuner -- got along famously, it seems, plunging instantly into long talks about real and perceived tones, cents, and the stiffness of piano-strings. Following up on one of these conversations, Feynman wrote McQuigg a six-page letter on the subject: "I suspect", he concluded, that "you piano tuners have been mistuning pianos since they were invented". Be that as it may, the two men certainly enjoyed a long and cordial relationship for the rest of Feynman's life, and towards the end -- although Feynman tried very hard in general not to sign or inscribe his books -- he made an exception for McQuigg, offered here with a copy of the 1961 letter (six pages) and an offprint of its appearance in Physics today 2009 (four pages) signed by its editor. -- ¶ Signed copies of this book are NOTORIOUSLY RARE; inscribed copies are rarer still; and copies inscribed to interesting, identifiable individuals are rarest of all. Indeed Feynman's signature has become something of a 'Feynman story' of its own: The famous physicist, it seems, who understood so much, could never understand why people collect autographs. He asked one collector, "Could you please write and explain it to me?" To another he wrote, "I'm sorry to have to inform you that I do not send autographs"; and then he signed the letter, thereby sending an autograph. He even made a bet, once, on how many times he would have to sign his name in connection with a certain speaking engagement. (He lost.) Requests for Feynman's signature were referred routinely to his secretary, who returned instead a printed card saying firmly that "Professor Feynman has found it necessary to refuse all requests for autographs". The result of all this is that Feynman's signature is very rare indeed, and highly prized. In sum, this is AN ELEGANT AND EVOCATIVE ASSOCIATION COPY, NEATLY UNITING FEYNMAN'S EAR, HIS MIND, AND HIS HEART. -- -- Collation: 209 × 140 mm (8¼ × 5½ inches): 176 leaves, paginated [1-7] 8-350 [351-352], including the genuine blank leaf at end (pages [351-352]). Binding: Publisher's quarter orange cloth lettered in gilt, orange boards, plain wove endpapers, no headbands, all edges trimmed and plain. Pictorial dust-jacket dated "1-85", priced $16.95. Condition: Fine, apparently unread; dust-jacket near fine, price intact. Collated perfect. References: Gleick Genius (1993) 64-65; J. C. Bryner "Stiff-string theory: Richard Feynman on piano tuning", Physics today 62.12 (December 2009) 46-49. Provenance: Howard James McQuigg (1916-2002), piano-tuner, of Monrovia nr Pasadena, inscribed to him as above. By descent; sold 28 May 2010.

Small Collection of Signed and Inscribed Books and Photographs

1955-1985. A collection that includes three Signed and Inscribed books, two Inscribed photographs and an Autograph Note in English Signed. The books (two in wrappers, the third an embossed leatherette hardcover) are generally very good with toning and wear at the extremities; the paperbacks have additional tape repaired spines and one is also dampstained with a few scrapes. The photos are fine in wooden frames and the ANS is about very good with some light toning and tape repairs to all four corners. The books include two written by Castro himself: a 1975 second edition of Hoy Somos Un Pueblo Entero [Today We Are an Entire People] Signed and dated in the year of publication, and a 1985 first edition of Esta Tiene Que Ser la Guerra Economica de Todo el Pueblo [This Must Be the Economic War of all People] Inscribed: "Por Nuestra Patria [For Our Country] Fidel Castro." The third book is the 1951 yearbook of the University of Tampa, Moroccan, Inscribed on the title page on October 1955 in Spanish. Loosely translated it reads: "Thanks to Imelda and her friends of Tampa for help with our new revolution in Cuba Dr. Fidel Castro." Castro came to Tampa in November, 1955 seeking support for his revolution -- why he was asked to inscribe this yearbook is unknown. A nice collection of rare signed and inscribed material from one of the most polarizing and influential political figures of the 20th Century. In just a few items it manages to encompass his life from popular revolutionary leader and celebrity who visited the U.S. in the 1950s to attract support for his cause, to that of prime minister of the new Cuba, and later the entrenched leader of the embargo Communist nation. Further details available upon request. .

        THE PLANT. PART III

Philtrum Press Bangor, ME: Philtrum Press, 1985. First Edition. loose sheets. Very Good with some expected wear. A set of loose galley sheets (7-1/2" x 25") of the third part of King's novel-in-progress published privately in an edition of only 200 copies as a Christmas greeting and not offered for public sale. This is the only set of galleys for this book we have seen, and it contains numerous corrections by King himself, sometimes signed, including at the head of the title: "Copy-edit complete./Steve King." Above that is a typed note about the text signed by Michael [Alpert], who was involved with the printing of the book. It appears that King's comments are photocopied from an original. We have priced this as a scarce issue of the book photocopied from the copy King corrected and not as the original copy that King corrected. If we are wrong, someone will be very happy. And if we are not wrong, we can still comfortably assume that even advanced King collectors do not have this.

A Mathematical Theory of Communication. [Offpint from Bell System Technical Journal 27 (July and October)].The Rare Offprint. New York: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1948. First edition.

Rare "separate offprint of the most famous work in the history of communication theory" (Norman, Origins of Cyberspace, 880).

Based on research begun during World War II, "Shannon developed a general theory of communication that would treat of the transmission of any sort of information from one point to another in space or time. His aim was to give specific technical definitions of concepts general enough to obtain in any situation where information is manipulated or transmitted - concepts such as information, noise, transmitter, signal, receiver, and message.

"At the heart of the theory was a new conceptualization of information. To make communication theory a scientific discipline, Shannon needed to provide a precise definition of information that transformed it into a physical parameter capable of quantification. He accomplished this transformation by distinguishing information from meaning. He reserved 'meaning' for the content actually included in a particular message. He used 'information' to refer to the number different possible messages that could be carried along a channel, depending on the message's length and on the number of choices of symbols for transmission at each point in the message. Information in Shannon's sense was a measure of orderliness (as opposed to randomness) in that it indicated the number of possible messages from which a particular message to be sent was chosen. The larger the number of possibilities, the larger the amount of information transmitted, because the actual message is distinguished from a greater number of possible alternatives ... "What began as a study of transmission over telegraph lines [by Nyquist and Hartley] was developed by Shannon into a general theory of communication applicable to telegraph, telephone, radio, television, and computing machines - in fact, to any system, physical or biological, in which information is being transferred or manipulated through time or space" (Aspray, Scientific Conceptualization of Information, 1985, 119-22).

Shannon's paper was also responsible for introducing the term 'bit' (for binary digit) into the published literature, and for giving the term its current meaning of "a unit of information derived from a choice between two equally probably alternatives or 'events'." (Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary [1972]). The word itself was suggested by John Tukey in 1946. See Annals of the History of Computing 6 (1984): 152-55. Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, OOC 880. Mount & List: Milestones, 65.. 4to (278 x 214 mm), pp 80 [2:blank], original printed wrappers; front wrapper with rubber stamp dated 1949, spine strip with 9 cm closed tear, holes for ring binder (as the OOC copy), custom cloth box, fine and clean throughout
