A Collection of Franz Wright Poems and Letters to a Fellow Poet

1985-1992. A collection of 36 Typescript and Holograph Poems from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Franz Wright, with nearly half of the poems Signed or Inscribed, along with five Autographed and Typed Letters Signed to a fellow poet. Wright, the son of poet James Wright, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his book, Walking to Martha's Vineyard, matching his father who won the prize in the same category in 1972, and making them the only father and son to accomplish this feat. The poems in this collection were written between 1985 and 1992 during which time Franz Wright published several books. A great many of these poems were published in those books but appear here in an earlier form with alternate verses and different titles. Several of the poems could not be identified and may be unpublished. The accompanying letters sent to his correspondent are surprisingly genial and optimistic considering Wright's tendency toward darker themes in his work. In them, he encourages his correspondents writing, speaks about his own love of poetry, comments on one of his father's poems, and talks about his recently established sobriety. Nearly all the poems and letters are in near fine or better condition though a few have a bit of wear to their extremities.A remarkable and notable collection of poetry and letters from this Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, giving new insight into his life, his relationships, and his writing process. .

El mundo poetico de Braulio Arenas containing Rimbaud's El Barco Ebrio

Ediciones Dos Amigos Buenos Aires: Ediciones Dos Amigos. 1985. One of 60 copies on Arches from a total issue of 62, numbered and signed by the publisher, Samuel Cesar Palui, on Ingres cream paper. Illustrated with two original full-page aquatints by Aida Carballo that were editioned with the aid of Mirta Ripoll. The text, which which contains seven original poems by Braulio Arenas in addition to one translation by Braulio Arenas, was hand set and printed letterpress by Ruben Raul Lapolla in 18pt Garamond in two colors, red for the poems' titles and initial letters and black for the text. The poem by Rimbaud, "El Barco Ebrio" ("Le Bateau Ivre") has been translated from the original French to Spanish by Braulio Arenas. The tan Ingres text pages of Rimbaud's poem are loosely inserted as pp. 17-24 in the verses of EL MUNDO POETICO DE BRAULIO ARENAS. Page size: 12-15/16 x 9-1/16 inches and 10-9/16 inches, 40pp. Bound: loose as issued in green wrapper, printed with publisher's initials on front fold- over tab, housed in red cloth and blue paper box with author and title printed on front and on spine, fine. The aquatints are lovely. The first is of a child floating a paper boat and the second a surreal cityscape. The image of the child harmonizes perfectly with the verse making the connection between the free expressions of the young with the efforts of the Surrealists. Braulio Arenas (1913-1988) Chilean poet, short story writer and dramatist, was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 1984. Considered a key Chilean surrealist, he was one of the founding members of the Mandragora (Surreal group) in 1938. See an Image.

        Fires

London: Collins Harvill. 1985. The first British edition of this Carver retrospective, originally published in 1983 by his early small press publisher, Capra, on the heels of his critical and commercial success. This British edition was a slightly different collection than the American one, lacking a couple of pieces that appeared in the U.S. edition and including a couple that did not. This copy is inscribed by Carver to novelist Robert Stone: "For Bob - with fond memories of the stay in Port Angeles. With love - Ray - July 22, 1985." Stone visited Carver at his home in Port Angeles, Washington, a couple of times, ostensibly for fishing trips including one with Tobias Wolff and Richard Ford -- an impressive gathering of American literary fishermen. Stone called Carver "the best American short story writer since Hemingway" and, speaking at Carver's memorial service, Stone borrowed a line from his own essay on Chekhov, the writer to whom Carver has most frequently been compared, and called Carver "a hero of perception." Foxing to pages edges and endpages, not affecting inscription; a very good copy in a very good, lightly edgeworn dust jacket with foxing, mostly on verso, and slight fading to the spine title. Association copies of Carver's books are highly uncommon, and this is one of the best we have seen. . First Edition. Hardcover.

SUNRISE WITH SEAMONSTERS. TRAVELS & DISCOVERIES. Signed

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1985 Important Presentation & Association Copy. 8vo. 365 pp. First Edition Inscribed By Paul Theroux to Nobel Prize winning Trinidadian author V.S. Naipaul on the front free endpaper, 'For Vidia, To mark twenty years of friendship - if you only knew how your good influence has kept me on the straight and narrow, with love, Paul' and additionally Signed by Theroux on the title-page. Theroux's friendship with Naipaul had spanned decades, Theroux penning, "V.S. Naipaul: An Introduction to His Work", in admiration of his mentor, and to mark their friendship's decline and fall, "Sir Vidia's Shadow: A Friendship Across Five Continents". A near fine copy, (slight bump to the top of the front board), in 1/4 turquoise cloth over grey paper covered boards, black and silver titles to the spine in a bright, fresh pictorial dustwrapper with light overall use. An extraordinary presentation & association copy and now a piece of literary history as the original appearance on the rare book market of three early Theroux titles [Fong and the Indians, Sinning with Annie; and V.S. Naipaul: An Introduction to his Work.] inscribed to Naipaul & his first wife Pat, precipitated a series of explosive exchanges between Theroux & Naipaul that helped dash their 30 plus year friendship into so much literary dust. This was Naipaul's own copy of this collection of essays, and it includes Theroux's excellent portrait of Naipaul which he, Naipaul did not entirely appreciate. Their relations had turned bitter about the time that Theroux discovered that Nadira, Naipaul's new wife had arranged to sell his Theroux books. Notwithstanding the ensuing tumult, the wonderful inscription tells volumes about the relationship of these two accomplished writers who shared so much greatness together. In the end, the pluses will count for much more than their bruised egos. Certainly, the most important copy, ever.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

The Cote d'Azur Triangle. Etchings and lithographs by Mark Beard

Vincent FitzGerald & Company New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 1985. Signed, Limited Edition, one of 119 copies only on Rives BFK, all signed by the author and artist, hand set in Janson, lithographs and etchings pulled by the Printmaking Workshop of Bob Blackburn. Page size 12 x 14 inches. Bound by Gerard Charriere, in cloth of vibrant yellow, with title stamped in blue within a red triangle on front cover, housed in black clamshell box by Charriere, fine. In this play by Harry Kondoleon, "A woman, her husband, and her husband's lover go up and down the Riviera only to be disappointed by the Riviera. The dullness of the Cote D'Azur reveals to these Americans the dullness and impossibility of love...they tire of one another and pursue sex partners at random until they are attacked and consumed by sea dragons." Mark Beard's brilliant illustrations of these "two dimensional and ironic" characters, in their bathing suits and sunglasses, in saturated primary colors, and his flat presentation, are overwhelming in their impact of the characters' vapidity. With illustrations such as Greek temple caryatids folding out to reveal the Cote d'Azur and paper doll players, Beard's art inexpressibly moves the viewer to the inevitable crush by the dragon of these pitiable self-centered creatures. A brilliant mixture of wit and irony with difficult and innovative printmaking techniques producing prints with highly unusual textures, especially in the final fold out, which has an effect of great richness and mystery. One of the most exciting works from the already renowned livre d'artiste oeuvre of Mark Beard. See an Image.

Nearly all the poems and letters are in near fine or better condition though a few have a bit of wear to their extremities.A remarkable and notable collection of poetry and letters from this Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, giving new insight into his life, his relationships, and his writing process. .
