The other lesson will be about why we are in space and will explain some of the experiments that are flown aboard the shuttles and will also mention the satellites which are launched on my mission.I am excited about my upcoming trip in January but I am also missing my classes of junior and senior high school students in Concord, New Hampshire."         Company. With 13 etchings by Dellas Henke.

Iowa Center for the Book athe the university of Iowa., (Iowa City). 1985 - (Iowa City). Iowa Center for the Book athe the university of Iowa. (1985). 36x28,5 cm. 8 n.n. S., 39 S., 16 n.n. S. Originalhalblederband mit blindgeprägtem Rückentitel, in Schuber. Originalausgabe. - Nr. 15 von 52 numerierten Exemplaren, von Beckett und dem Künstler signiert (neben 9 unnumerierten Exemplaren). - Becketts Text erschien erstmals 1980 in der Grove Press. Die Biographie des Künstlers nach eigenen Worten: "Raised in Rochester, New York, influenced by long grey winters, a Grandfather who painted for ninety years, a close-knit Italian family and a post-war suburb. Equally important the German blood; especially an Aunt, Uncle and Grandmother who lived a simple peaceful life in the desert scablands of Eastern Washington. A father both decorated and severely wounded in the war and a mother who dated a young soldier wrapped in bandages. It is funny how you get here. I make intaglio prints but growing up near Kodak means you are born with a camera in your hands, and generally I am interested in anything I can do with my hands (from planting trees to building furniture to fly-fishing), and just about anything you do with yours. If there is a difference between an etching needle and a camera it is only that one tool works from the inside out and the other just the opposite. It seems I have been teaching at Grand Valley State University my entire adult life. There I coordinate the Printmaking emphasis in the Department of Art and Design". [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        L'Oeil du Jazz

Paris: Editions Filipacchi,, 1985. Quarto. Original black cloth, title gilt to spine, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Profusely illustrated from Leonard's photographs. Top corners a little bumped, the jacket a touch used, but overall very good. True first edition. This copy inscribed by Leonard to French actor and film producer Claude Haymann, "A Claude Haymann En Sincère hommage, Herman Leonard", and extremely uncommon thus. On his return from the Second World War Leonard spent a year in Ottawa as apprentice to the great alchemist of photographic portraiture Yousuf Karsh. In 1948 he established himself in a small studio in Greenwich Village, and with his camera as his free ticket, he made his way into the swinging clubs of Broadway, 52nd Street and Harlem, offering to take publicity portraits of the performers in exchange for admission. While shooting at locations such as The Royal Roost and Birdland, he developed lasting friendships with some of the greats of jazz history, Miles, Bird, Diz, Lena Horne, Lady Day, the Prez, Duke Ellington and many more. His photos graced the covers of many albums produced by the great Norman Granz, also appearing in the jazz journals of record, Downbeat and Metronome. After a stint as Marlon Brando's personal photographer, Leonard settled in France and became one of the country's most in-demand fashion photographers, working for the leading couture houses, and most chic advertising agencies. It was only during a move from Paris to Ibiza in 1980 that Leonard rediscovered boxes full of his jazz negs from the 40s and 50s, a find that led to this, his first book. In the year of publication Leonard was awarded an "Honorary Masters of Science in Photography" from The Brooks Institute of Photography, he has subsequently received the "Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography," from Jazz Photographer's Association, a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from Downbeat Magazine, and in 2008 the much-coveted Lucie Award for Portraiture from long-time friend Tony Bennett. The importance of Leonard's' work is probably best summed up by Quincy Jones, who said "When people think of jazz, their mental picture is likely one of Herman's".

        Signed portrait photograph.

n.p., 1985 - 240 : 175 mm. Official German press photograph of the Chinese politician Hu Yaobang together with German Chancellor and Nobel Prize Winner Willi Brandt. Signed by both recto. - He achieved his most senior status within the Communist Party of China from 1981 to 1987, first as Party chairman from 1981 to 1982, then as General Secretary of the Communist Party from 1982 to 1987. Hu joined the Chinese Communist Party in the 1930s, and rose to prominence as a comrade of Deng Xiaoping. During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), Hu was purged, recalled, and purged again, following the political career of Deng. After Deng rose to power, following the death of Mao Zedong, Deng promoted Hu to a series of high political positions. Throughout the 1980s Hu pursued a series of economic and political reforms under the direction of Deng. Hu's political and economic reforms made him the enemy of several powerful Party elders, who opposed free market reforms and attempts to make China's government more transparent. When widespread student protests occurred across China in 1987, Hu's political opponents successfully blamed Hu for the disruptions, claiming that Hu's "laxness" and "bourgeois liberalization" had either led to, or worsened, the protests. Hu was forced to resign as Party general secretary, but was allowed to retain a seat in the Politburo.Hu's position as Party general secretary was taken by Zhao Ziyang, who continued many of Hu's economic and political reforms.
