        The Ghostway

This is the McMillan limited edition that was subtitled The Door Into Darkness. Fine unread book in a Fine minus jacket that has a tiny ding to front panel that is within the purple cloud and barely noticeable. This is copy 114 of 300 such copies and is signed by Hillerman on the limitation page. This is the only limited, First Edition of a Hillerman Navajo mystery to be issued by a publisher other than Harper. I’m not quite sure how Dennis pulled this off, but it makes this edition of the Ghostway a collectors’ high spot. The unusual, wrap-around  jacket was done by Chista Cantu. This edition appeared a year before the Harper trade edition was published in 1985 and is the true first printing of this novel. This is the third Navajo mystery featuring Jim Chee.

        In the American West

New York: Abrams, 1985 Hardcover SIGNED. First edition, 1985, first printing. Fine brown cloth-bound hardcover with mounted plates to front and back cover in the original mylar dust jacket with light shelf wear. A very nice copy. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. Photographs and foreword by Richard Avedon; preface by John Rohrbach; text by Laura Wilson. Unpaginated [174 pages] with 1 gatefold; 120 full-page tri-toned b&w plates; 14 x 11 inches. SIGNED BY AVEDON on the ffep in the year of publication and inscribed. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, TX, Avedon's In the American West is widely regarded as a landmark project in photographic history. Avedon traveled throughout five years, meeting and photographing the people of the West--ranch workers, roustabouts, bar girls, drifters, gamblers, miners, wildcatters, slaughterhouse workers, and adolescents. Often mistaken as sociology, Avedon was very clear that it is entirely a fiction, his "vision" of the West. This makes the work no less stunning an achievement. See: Parr & Badger, The Photobook, Vol. 2. Due to size and weight, international and expedited shipping will be more than quoted.

"Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" Adventures of a Curious Character

NY: W. W. Norton & Co, 1985. PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., eighth printing, inscribed on the title-page "To Don Roth / Richard Feynman", hardbound, with the priced DJ, VG+/VG, with the original scarce errata slip. An uncommonly interesting association, nicely recalling the first sparks of FeynmanÆs lifelong passion for figuring out æthe way things workÆ. Don Roth (Donald J. Roth, 1931û2010) was FeynmanÆs first and closest neighbor in California: The two men shared a rented æduplexÆ at 844/6 Alameda Street in Altadena from 1953 till 1960, when Feynman married Gweneth Howarth and moved to Boulder Drive. Roth was an appliance sales and repairman by trade; and Feynman, it will be remembered, had got his start in physics in much the same way ù as a kid in Far Rockaway, repairing his neighborsÆ radios and typewriters ôby thinkingö. They must have had a lot to talk about, this repairman and the gregarious genius next door; and the two men maintained a loose acquaintance long afterwards, as the present copy attests.

I Am an American Fighting Man [Signed by the Artist and 4 POWs]

[U.S. Air Force Lithograph Series] [1985], [Washington, DC] - Number 36 in the U.S. Airforce Lithograph Series. Two images of an American aviator with a stylized map of Vietnam between the two. In the image on the left, the flyer is in uniform; on the right he is dressed in the garb of a POW. "I am an American fighting man" are the first words to the Code of Conduct for the U.S. Fighting Man. Much of that code of conduct concerns what his behavior will be if he becomes a prisoner of war. Number 201 of 500 (or 800 -- denominator unclear) copies signed by the artist, Jay Ashurst. The artist's printed signature is on the lithograph; the numbered edition has the actual signature in addition. This copy is also signed by four high-profile Vietnam POWs: Brigadier General Robinson "Robbie" Risner, USAF; Colonel Carlyle "Smitty" Harris, USAF; Captain Eugene "Red" McDaniel, USN; and Colonel Warren "Bob" Lilly, USAF. All four were aviators who were shot down and captured and served long terms in North Vietnamese prisons -- three of them over seven years, the fourth just under six. Despite the relatively large limitation, we have found little evidence of copies being available; a copy such as this, signed by four prominent, high-ranking former POWs, is by all appearances exceedingly scarce. The provenance and the names of the POWs have been detailed on the verso. 16" x 20". Very small, shallow stain top margin, one nick along bottom edge, else fine, in original mailing envelope that now bears a bookseller's mailing label. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Contract single staple bound at center, upper page edge; final page detached, else very good. WITH: collection of approximately 150 original manuscript and typed letters written to Wilson, the majority concerning his book MUD SOLDIERS, several on the subject of an earlier work titled SUPERCARRIER; approximately 65,000 words total. Additional to the lot are dozens of pages of photocopied duplicates, replies and a partial typescript excerpt from working draft of MUD SOLDIERS. Contents well preserved, generally very good. Also includes modern 4to. faux-leather covered three ring binder album measuring approximately 11.5?" x 11?" containing 50 plastic covered adhesive card leaves mounted with 150 color snapshot photographs, 5 black and white and 4 color approximately 8?" x 10?" enlargements, 12 black and white approximately 8?" x 10?" black and white press contact sheets and several clippings. Album moderately worn at edges and a handful of prints appear perished, otherwise very good. A substantive archive of primary source materials belonging to military writer and Washington Post correspondent, George C. Wilson (1927-2014). Wilson began work as a reporter for The Post in 1966, covering Vietnam in-country during 1968 and 1972. He was later assigned to military and Pentagon affairs through 1990. In his memoir, former Post editor Ben Bradlee called Wilson a ?"…twenty-year Pentagon gold mine…?" The archive offered here relates to his 1989 book, MUD SOLDIERS, which chronicled a 1987 class of recruits to the United States Army?'s infantry division, comparing the experiences of soldiers in the new, all-volunteer force, with their counterparts from a Sixteenth Infantry regiment involved in the April 1966 Battle of Xa Cam My during the Vietnam War. For MUD SOLDIERS, Wilson embedded himself with the newly enlisted, beginning with their basic training at Fort Benning, July-October 1987. His field notebook thoroughly describes this time: soldier interviews, focusing on the new recruits and their drill sergeants, but also contains much in the way of Wilson?'s own notes and observations, including detailed expense reports and musings on balancing his Post duties with writing a book. He writes on July 28, 1987: ?"called Sagalyn, [his agent] he said Macmillan offered 75,000 advance. Recommended a letter from me to stall decision. Question is bird in hand as one in bush? My inclination is to go for more after I?'m immersed at Benning. See 1 ½ years work ahead.?" (In the final, signed contract for the book, dated December 22, 1987, also here offered, the advance amount is $100,000.) The notebook is rich with observations and interviews including: a soldier?'s suicide, another's death due to the oppressing Georgia heat, as well as general interactions of the soldiers with the Army in the new all volunteer era. In 1987, the Army had begun issuing bonuses of $5000 for new recruits on completion of advanced infantry training and nearly all soldiers interviewed cite the money as a strong influence on their decisions to enlist. Supporting the notebook is a collection of approximately 150 original letters to Wilson following the book?'s publication. Many echo his observations including a December 29, 1989 ALS from an Army specialist with a career path similar to those profiled in MUD SOLDIERS: ?"It takes a lot of motivation and self determination just to survive here […] it?'s a mental hell […] if we turn in a 4187 (request for transfer) form, they laugh and say 'you?'ll never get outta here?' and my personal favorite, ?"don?'t make trouble for yourself.' I take that as a threat.?" In addition to the materials on MUD SOLDIERS is Wilson?'s photo album, consisting primarily of images from a 1990 Post assignment to cover a conference of Vietnamese and United States writers, hosted by the Vietnam Writers?' Association, including several Washington Post contact sheets with Wilson?'s manuscript production notes. In attendance and pictured here were Yusef Komunyakaa, Bruce Weigl, W.D. Ehrhart, Kevin Bowen and Gordon Rottman. Wilson?'s sensitive curiosity and interest in the individual soldier were clearly evident in his choice of projects, assignments and ultimately his writing. Offering an intimacy not typically found in works of military non-fiction, MUD SOLDIERS stands out as a finely written, well researched account of the post-Vietnam, pre-Gulf War military, specifically the Army's Infantry division, through the lens of a 20-plus year veteran reporter of military and Pentagon affairs.

NEW HOPE FOR THE DEAD - INSCRIBED TO PHILIP JOSÉ FARMER

New York: St. Martin's Press, 1985. First Edition. New. First Printing. Near Fine in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Spine ends and upper corners very gently nudged, though the corner tips are still perfectly sharp. The jacket is unclipped, lightly rubbed at the extremities, with some of the typical spine fading endemic to this title. This copy belonged to noted science fiction author Philip José Farmer, inscribed to him in true Willefordian fashion: "To - Philip José Farmer - Keep a good grip on the old sphincter, and all will be well. Yours - Charles Willeford." Though nothing has been written about the relationship between the two authors, one can surmise they met through Dennis McMillan, who published both authors during the 80's. Fame came to Willeford later in his career, though by the time of this inscription, Farmer had already extablished his reputation. This is the second Hoke Moseley novel, and among the scarcest of the author's books to find signed. Though we have seen a number of generic inscriptions by Willeford, this is far and away the best we've seen, and the only literary association we have encountered.

In his memoir, former Post editor Ben Bradlee called Wilson a “…twenty-year Pentagon gold mine…” The archive offered here relates to his 1989 book, MUD SOLDIERS, which chronicled a 1987 class of recruits to the United States ArmyÂ’s infantry division, comparing the experiences of soldiers in the new, all-volunteer force, with their counterparts from a Sixteenth Infantry regiment involved in the April 1966 Battle of Xa Cam My during the Vietnam War. For MUD SOLDIERS, Wilson embedded himself with the newly enlisted, beginning with their basic training at Fort Benning, July-October 1987. His field notebook thoroughly describes this time: soldier interviews, focusing on the new recruits and their drill sergeants, but also contains much in the way of WilsonÂ’s own notes and observations, including detailed expense reports and musings on balancing his Post duties with writing a book. He writes on July 28, 1987: “called Sagalyn, [his agent] he said Macmillan offered 75,000 advance. Recommended a letter from me to stall decision. Question is bird in hand as one in bush? My inclination is to go for more after IÂ’m immersed at Benning. See 1 ½ years work ahead.” (In the final, signed contract for the book, dated December 22, 1987, also here offered, the advance amount is $100,000.) The notebook is rich with observations and interviews including: a soldierÂ’s suicide, another's death due to the oppressing Georgia heat, as well as general interactions of the soldiers with the Army in the new all volunteer era. In 1987, the Army had begun issuing bonuses of $5000 for new recruits on completion of advanced infantry training and nearly all soldiers interviewed cite the money as a strong influence on their decisions to enlist. Supporting the notebook is a collection of approximately 150 original letters to Wilson following the bookÂ’s publication. Many echo his observations including a December 29, 1989 ALS from an Army specialist with a career path similar to those profiled in MUD SOLDIERS: “It takes a lot of motivation and self determination just to survive here [Â…] itÂ’s a mental hell [Â…] if we turn in a 4187 (request for transfer) form, they laugh and say 'youÂ’ll never get outta hereÂ’ and my personal favorite, “donÂ’t make trouble for yourself.' I take that as a threat.” In addition to the materials on MUD SOLDIERS is WilsonÂ’s photo album, consisting primarily of images from a 1990 Post assignment to cover a conference of Vietnamese and United States writers, hosted by the Vietnam WritersÂ’ Association, including several Washington Post contact sheets with WilsonÂ’s manuscript production notes. In attendance and pictured here were Yusef Komunyakaa, Bruce Weigl, W.D. Ehrhart, Kevin Bowen and Gordon Rottman. WilsonÂ’s sensitive curiosity and interest in the individual soldier were clearly evident in his choice of projects, assignments and ultimately his writing.
