I Vangeli.: 12 illustrazioni di Gregorio Sciltian.

Istituto Poligrafico d’Arte, Roma. 1985 - Rara edizione, sconosciuta ad ICCU e non presente sul mercato antiquario, in tiratura limitata di 270 esemplari. Firma dell’autore all’occhietto e al colophon.

Structure of the Radioactive Atom and Origin of the -Rays," in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, 7th Series, Vol 4, 1927, pp 580-605

FIRST EDITION of "the theory of the nucleus - his 'view', or model of the nucleus - was finally expressed in a great paper, this one" (Wilson, Rutherford: Simple Genius, 441). "In the early 1920s Rutherford, working in Cambridge, bombarded a series of light elements with alpha-particles and showed that they could be disintegrated, often with the emission of protons. He thought about the mechanism of the reactions and tried to visualize what was going on in terms of the structure of the nucleus. Guided by what he had already discovered about the structure of the atom: that it consists of a small central nucleus with orbiting electrons that are grouped in shells - Rutherford outlined his speculations in "Structure of the Radioactive Atom and Origin of the -Rays"). "He first of all showed how his idea could explain the familiar alpha-decay of radioactive nuclei. He suggested that 'the nucleus of a heavy atom has certain well defined regions in its structure. At the centre is a controlling charged nucleus of very small dimensions surrounded at a distance by a number of neutral satellites describing quantum orbits controlled by the electric field from the central nucleus.' Then one of these neutral alpha satellites 'for some reason becomes unstable and escapes from the nucleus losing its two electrons. Occasionally one of these electrons is hurled from the system giving rise to a disintegration electron.' In this way Rutherford's model was able to give a simple, qualitative explanation of both alpha and beta decay. He envisaged light nuclei as constructed in a similar way, with any protons left over orbiting on their own. This made it easy to understand how protons could be knocked out when light nuclei are bombarded by alpha particles" (Hodgson, "The reality inside the atom," New Scientist 17, 1985). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis. Entire volume. Ex-libris and bearing occasional light stamp within. New end papers. No marks at the spine whatsoever. Octavo (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). [ix], 1372, [2]. 24 plates. Bound in moderately rubbed maroon cloth over marbled paper boards. Scuffed at the edge tips with some splitting of the cloth at the spine on the rear. Stain on title page otherwise bright and clean throughout.

Originalhalblederband mit blindgeprägtem Rückentitel, in Schuber. Originalausgabe. - Nr. 15 von 52 numerierten Exemplaren, von Beckett und dem Künstler signiert (neben 9 unnumerierten Exemplaren). - Becketts Text erschien erstmals 1980 in der Grove Press. Die Biographie des Künstlers nach eigenen Worten: "Raised in Rochester, New York, influenced by long grey winters, a Grandfather who painted for ninety years, a close-knit Italian family and a post-war suburb. Equally important the German blood; especially an Aunt, Uncle and Grandmother who lived a simple peaceful life in the desert scablands of Eastern Washington. A father both decorated and severely wounded in the war and a mother who dated a young soldier wrapped in bandages. It is funny how you get here. I make intaglio prints but growing up near Kodak means you are born with a camera in your hands, and generally I am interested in anything I can do with my hands (from planting trees to building furniture to fly-fishing), and just about anything you do with yours. If there is a difference between an etching needle and a camera it is only that one tool works from the inside out and the other just the opposite. It seems I have been teaching at Grand Valley State University my entire adult life. There I coordinate the Printmaking emphasis in the Department of Art and Design". - Von uns nur in 2 Bibliotheken nachweisbar (Library of Congress LCCN 85240763 und BNF, Paris). - Schönes Exemplar.         L'Oeil du Jazz

Paris: Editions Filipacchi,, 1985. Quarto. Original black cloth, title gilt to spine, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Profusely illustrated from Leonard's photographs. Top corners a little bumped, the jacket a touch used, but overall very good. True first edition. This copy inscribed by Leonard to French actor and film producer Claude Haymann, "A Claude Haymann En Sincère hommage, Herman Leonard", and extremely uncommon thus. On his return from the Second World War Leonard spent a year in Ottawa as apprentice to the great alchemist of photographic portraiture Yousuf Karsh. In 1948 he established himself in a small studio in Greenwich Village, and with his camera as his free ticket, he made his way into the swinging clubs of Broadway, 52nd Street and Harlem, offering to take publicity portraits of the performers in exchange for admission. While shooting at locations such as The Royal Roost and Birdland, he developed lasting friendships with some of the greats of jazz history, Miles, Bird, Diz, Lena Horne, Lady Day, the Prez, Duke Ellington and many more. His photos graced the covers of many albums produced by the great Norman Granz, also appearing in the jazz journals of record, Downbeat and Metronome. After a stint as Marlon Brando's personal photographer, Leonard settled in France and became one of the country's most in-demand fashion photographers, working for the leading couture houses, and most chic advertising agencies. It was only during a move from Paris to Ibiza in 1980 that Leonard rediscovered boxes full of his jazz negs from the 40s and 50s, a find that led to this, his first book. In the year of publication Leonard was awarded an "Honorary Masters of Science in Photography" from The Brooks Institute of Photography, he has subsequently received the "Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography," from Jazz Photographer's Association, a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from Downbeat Magazine, and in 2008 the much-coveted Lucie Award for Portraiture from long-time friend Tony Bennett. The importance of Leonard's' work is probably best summed up by Quincy Jones, who said "When people think of jazz, their mental picture is likely one of Herman's".
