Blood Meridian, or The Evening Redness in the West

New York: Random House, 1985. Uncorrected proof of first edition of the author's fifth novel. Octavo, original yellow wrappers. Signed by Cormac McCarthy on the title page. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare, especially signed. "Blood Meridian seems to me the authentic American apocalyptic novel, more relevant even in 2000 than it was fifteen years ago. The fulfilled renown of Moby-Dick and of As I Lay Dying is augmented by Blood Meridian, since Cormac McCarthy is the worthy disciple both of Melville and of Faulkner. I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian" (Harold Bloom). McCarthy can only be compared with our greatest writers, with Melville and Faulkner, and this is his masterpiece" (Michael Herr).

        The Cunning Little Vixen

New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, (1985). First U.S. edition. original green cloth lettered in gilt, pictorial endpapers. Very edges of cloth a tad faded, else fine/pictorial dust jacket (a bit worn). Quarto. Profusely illustrated in colour by Maurice Sendak Signed and inscribed by Maurice Sendak on first leaf. With inscriptions and signatures of two of the translators. With the signature of the recipient, Yveta Graff Rudolf Tesnohlidek, a journalist in the Moravia city of Brno, wrote "The Cunning Little Vixen" as a newspaper serial, fitting it to student sketches by the artist Stanislav Lolek. The illustrated serial ran in the Brno newspaper "Lidove Noviny [People's News] in the spring of 1920 and made such a stir that it came out in book form a year later. ... never before been translated into another language, despite the international fame of the opera that Leos Janacek based it on. This edition of "The Cunning Little Vixen "is lavishly illustrated by Maurice Sendak, who designed the New York City Opera's celebrated production of the Janacek opera. Yveta Synek Graff was born in Prag to fervent anti-nazi parents who fled to Paris. Her father Emil Synek worked with the Czech government in-exile. In 1956 Yveta came to the United States and remained here until her death in 2015. She and her second husband F. Malcom Graff were avid opera lovers, and with her husband's encouragement Yveta became involved, first as a vocal coach in her native Czech language and then with her colleague and editor Robert T. Jones, as a translator and transliteraor (i.e. phonetic transcription). Today her transliterations are permanently archived at the Juilliard School of Music and used by every opera house in the world. She began in 1977 with the Opera Orchestra of New York performing Smetana's Dalibor, in Czech, on the stage of Carnegie Hall. For the next thirty years she worked at almost every opera house of not in the world overseeing productions of operas by Leos Janacek (the Cunning Little Vixen, Kat'a Kabanova, Jenufa, From the House of the Dead and the Makropulos Case), Dvorak (Rusalka) and Smetana (The Bartered Bride).

THE ANUBIS GATES - (Pristine Copy Signed by Tim and Serena Powers)

Chatto & Windus, UK 1985 - Chatto & Windus, 1985. This is an immaculate, unread copy of the hardcover edition of the wonderful award-winning novel that made the sterile 80s worthwhile. Pristine boards as sharp as the knife with which Nietzsche carved up church doctrine, a spine as robust and aestethically appealing as a gold brick in the shape of a Five Euro note, pages as wholesome as the village idiot's compassionate, blind wife, and a spotless unclipped dustjacket as slick, well dressed and as full of joie de vivre as a hippy mistakenly locked into a Spanish pharmacy whose class A drugs cabinet has been left open. "Anubis" is a wonderful hybrid of science fiction and London smog. It is also a romp through Victorian London with the ancestors of Dick van Dyke heckling the heroes on their way to the book's final page. Not a hair is out of place. AS NEW, THE BOOK IS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, TIM POWERS, AND HIS CHARMING WIFE, SERENA POWERS, TO WHOM THE BOOK IS DEDICATED. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
