        Collected Stories.

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers,, 1984. Octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine, fore edges untrimmed, yellow endpapers. With the dust jacket. Boards very slightly sprung, light spotting to top and fore edges. A very good copy in the dust jacket with a short closed tear to the foot of the front panel, and a couple of small nicks to the head of the spine panel. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author "To Philip, from his friend, GabM, 85" on the title page. The recipient was Irish bibliophile Dr Philip Murray, whose collection was sold in 2016 in Ireland's largest-ever sale of first editions. In his memoir, The Adventures of a Book Collector (2011), Murray writes: "I had heard that the Mexican postal system is one of the most unreliable anywhere in the world, but I decided to chance it and sent eleven books ? nearly a year went by without any further word. I was certain my luck had run out and I would never see my copies again ? the return package had burst open and had had to be repacked. All the books were inscribed and the author had drawn various images in some of them, so it was worth the wait". "These twenty-six brilliant and enchanting short stories by the 1982 Nobel Laureate are now collected in one volume for the first time. They appear in the order in which they were originally published in Spanish in three separate volumes. They were published in English in No One Writes to the Colonel and Other Stories (1968), Leaf Storm and Other Stories (1972), and Innocent Eréndira and Other Stories (1978)" (dust jacket front flap).

        The Mirror and the Eye

Whittington Press, Andoversford, Gloucestershire 1984 - 38x30cm, [63pp]. With line-block reproductions of 26 drawings by Kennedy, accompanying four-line verses by Omar Khayyam, mostly previously untranslated. Copy 35 of 100 (126) signed by Azmi and Kennedy, printed on Arches Creme mould-made paper, bound in quarter vellum and Whittington marbled paper over boards, gilt rule to front and rear covers, t.e.g., gilt title to spine, in a slipcase of mushroom paper over boards with brown cloth to the head, foot and spine. Set in 30-point Garamond Italic, the overall effect (even in this 'ordinary' edition of the book) is lavish and magnificent in scale. The paper covering the boards, designed by Colleen Gryspeerdt, forms a bold flower pattern through marbling alone, not printing. The poems, although by Omar Khayyam, are not the ones popularly known in the Edward Fitzgerald 'Rubaiyat'. Fine, in a Fine slipcase. Butcher 71. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Encounters with Chinese Writers [The Author's Copy]

Middletown: Wesleyan University Press. (1984). Dillard's own copy of this nonfiction account of the author's encounters with Chinese writers, both in China and in the U.S. With Dillard's notes on about a half-dozen pages and with two Post-Its on inner pages with instructions to herself, all apparently in preparation for a reading. Small sticker on the spine, stating "MINE"; an "Ex Libris Annie Dillard" bookplate on the copyright page; and a laid in note saying "Don't remove any Post-Its or other paper from these books." Interestingly, additionally inscribed by Dillard to Garry Trudeau (but obviously not presented to him) in 1987: "with all good wishes from your admirer." Dillard and Trudeau each won a Pulitzer Prize in 1975 (for Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and Doonesbury, respectively). Published by the press of a small university, where Dillard taught. Fine in wrappers. First Edition. Softcover. Fine.
