Autograph Note Concerning The Jesus and Mary Chain's First Single "Upside Down"

[London]. [1984]. Holograph note written in black ink on both sides of a single sheet of lined notebook paper. Approximately 150 words. [2]pp. Near fine with light vertical fold, tiny single tear at the foredge, and top edge with scattered remnant from being torn from a spiral notebook. Original Autograph Letter Signed from The Jesus and Mary Chain lead singer Jim Reid to Creation Record's Alan McGee, the man who would sign the band to their first record deal and become their manager, probably tendered with the master tape of the band's first demo/single ("Upside Down") in the hopes of gaining attention. According to Dave Thompson's book Alternative Rock: "They recorded another demo and mailed it to the then-tiny indy Creation Records, in the hope of getting a gig at label head Alan McGee's Living Room club. He was impressed, not only booking the band, but also issuing their first single." The note outlines the problems with equipment, financing, and engineers they experienced during the recording: "We didn't have very much money so we went into an 8 track studio and recording it live (more or less) but it sounded f*cking awful. The guitar sound was terrible and the whole thing was very tame. Mainly because of the stupid bastard engineer who didn't understand what we were looking for. ... Hope you like it. It is called 'Upside Down' and was written by Jim Reid and William Reid." The letter ends with a list of band members, including original drummer Murray Dalglish who left the band at the end of 1984 in a dispute over money. A humorous and pivotal letter that led to the band signing with Creation and ultimately to their debut album Psycho Candy, one of the seminal indy albums of the 1980s. .

Signed portrait photo of Golda Meir used in Asher Kalderon's design of the 1984 10,000-shekel and 1985 10-shekel bank notes

Black & White Portrait Photograph Signed, "Golda Meir", in Hebrew, 5" X 7" with border, image size 4.75" X 5.5", no date, no place. This image of Meir was used on the front of the Israel 10,000 shekel bank note, designed by Asher Kalderon, issued November 1984 by the Bank of Israel, and on the 10 shekel bank note, designed by Asher Kalderon, put in circulation in September 1985. Light edge and corner wear, overall very good condition with clean, dark signature.Meir served as the Minister of Labor, Foreign Minister, and as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel from March 17, 1969 to June 3, 1974. She is the first female Prime Minister of Israel, and was the third female Prime Minister in the world. Golda Meir was one of twenty-four people (and one of two women) who signed the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948. The following day, Israel was attacked by joint forces from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan and Iraq. Golda was issued Israel's first passport and went to the United States to raise money for the fledgling nation. When she returned, she was assigned to be the first ambassador to the Soviet Union. During her stay in Moscow, she attended high holiday services and was mobbed by thousands of Russian Jews chanting her name; Stalin's repression of Jewish identity in the Soviet Union made many observers wonder whether there was still a strong sense of community but the crowd's welcoming treatment provided the answer. The picture on the back of Meir's Israeli Shekel bank note is that of the crowd in Moscow surrounding her and lifting her in happiness.

        ORIGINAL ART: CHRISTMAS POEMS

1984. HYMAN,TRINA SCHART. ORIGINAL ART FROM CHRISTMAS POEMS a book of poems selected by Myra Cohn Livingston and published by Holiday House in 1984. The piece offered here is a charming double-page spread appearing on pages 24 and 25 of the book. The image measures 16" wide x 9" high and is nicely matted. The scene is viewed through a window from the inside, executed in pen and ink with a wash. A fanciful gingerbread house sits on a snowy mountain. A teddy bear peers over the hill. In front of the house are 5 little children playing with a cleverly drawn acorn-man. This is a lovely, detailed piece.

Very faint price sticker shadow to front panel. Else bright and sharp. Book has a couple of small corner bumps. Else clean and sound. Together, a very attractive example of a genuinely uncommon title, especially so in this edition which was produced primarily for the institutional market, a fact the condition of most copies offered (unlike this one) reflect. Scarce hardcover issue of Neil Gaimon's first book, a biography of the then-wildly-popular British band. It went through only one rather small print run before the publisher went out of business and has never been republished. Indeed, for many years, Gaimon referred to the book - which he undertook only for the money - as his "dark secret." Gaimon is the author of The Sandman series of graphic novels, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, among numerous other works in an impressive variety of genres. He is the winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Newbery awards. The future "A1" entry in this bestselling and important author's bibliography.

Wood Works. Constructions by Robert Indiana

Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution, 1984. First Edition. Quarto. Pictorial wrappers; 64pp; illus. INSCRIBED to Bernarda Shahn on half-title: "Skowhegan / 3.viii.85 / For Bernarda, my best (such a lovely weekend to remember)." Also laid in is a postcard from the artist, a reproduction of his iconic "LO/VE" painting, addressed to Bernarda Shahn and dated 1969: "Bernarda - Hope with my small LO/VE I can express my pleasure at getting to know you." Minor wear; Very Good to Near Fine. & & A warm presentation from the iconic pop artist. The occasion of the first card would appear to have been the two artists' first encounter at the Skowhegan Artists' Workshop in 1969 (where Indiana was a lecturer that year); the 1985 inscription, also from Skowhegan, likely coincides with one of Bernarda's frequent lectureships - she and Ben were regular participants at Skowhegan beginning with Ben's first lectureship in 1954.
