        El Libro de las Profesias

Madrid: Testimonio Compañía Editorial y el Patrimonio Nacional, 1984. Facsimile. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto. Bound in decorative leather with Moorish-styled brass accent studs on board. 30x22 cm. Housed in a grey and black slipcase. Limited edition, this is number 384/750 (of which only 683 were for sale). Written after his third new world voyage (1501-1505), it is a journal of apocalyptic prophecies and observations by the aging explorer as he neared the end of his life. An impeccably done exact replica of the original handwritten copy housed in the Biblioteca Capitular and Columbina in Seville. The artists who prepared the work under the direction of reknowned book artist Cesar Olmos faithfully and painstakingly recreated every nuance from the original: tears, edgewear, silverfishing, and - yes - even tape repairs. A marvellous book, as worthy as an artists' book as a glimpse into history. Does not include the companion study volume. In fine condition (naturally excepting the deliberately contrived "flaws") in a slipcase with one bumped corner and minor edgewear.

The Original Art for the Title Page of the Monkey Wrench Gang

Dream Garden Press, 1984. R. Crumb. The original pen and ink lettering for the title page of The Monkey Wrench Gang, by R. Crumb. The lettering measures 23.5 cm. x 17 cm. Matted and framed and in fine condition. A rare opportunity to own both an R. Crumb original and a Monkey Wrench Gang classic. One of approximately two dozen original drawings that Dream Garden Press commissioned legendary sixties icon and Zap Comix pioneer, R. Crumb to illustrate the tenth anniversary edition of Edward Abbey's equally legendary novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang published in 1985. Abbey's novel has now sold over one million copies and has become, along with Desert Solitaire, what the late author always dreaded, "a classic". The Monkey Wrench Gang inspired the real life radical environmental group, Earth First! and inspired countless other individuals and groups to defend the wilderness. R. Crumb, from his humble beginnings as a greeting card artist in Kansas City, an unlikely sixties icon from his work in Zap Comix, went on to create Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural and is now collected by museums and galleries across the globe. He was the subject of the Terry Zwigoff documentary Crumb (1994), and shortly thereafter, traded a sketchbook of original drawings for a chateau in France, where he has lived with his family ever since.

The Far Side of the World

London: Collins,, 1984. Octavo. Original green boards, titles to spine gilt. With the price-clipped dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled with a minor crease, contents tanned as usual. An excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket with faded spine panel. First edition, first impression, in the second state dust jacket as usual. The publisher initially printed the incorrect price on the jacket, and this error was resolved by clipping the jacket and applying a sticker for £9.95, as in this copy. Very few survived with the original price. An attractive copy of one of the most difficult Aubrey titles to find in nice condition.

THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

Collins. London.,1984. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. The tenth novel in O'Brian's Aubrey and Maturin series. Pages margins are browned as is common with this book, otherwise a fine tight copy in publishers dark green boards with gilt lettering and publishers device to the spine. In the original full colour illustrated dustwrapper with the publishers price clip and new circular gold price(9.95) sticker to the inner flap. It appears the publisher had a change of mind regarding the price either at the time of publication, or very shortly after as few copies with the original, lower, price exist. There is a minor production fault where the original laminate has wrinkled along the front hinge, otherwise a near fine example of the dustwrapper with just a hint of fadig to the red spine, only noticable when studied closely. Generally a nice, clean and bright copy.:

Autograph Note Concerning The Jesus and Mary Chain's First Single "Upside Down"

[London]. [1984]. Holograph note written in black ink on both sides of a single sheet of lined notebook paper. Approximately 150 words. Near fine with light vertical fold, tiny single tear at the foredge, and top edge with scattered remnant from being torn from a spiral notebook. Original Autograph Letter Signed from The Jesus and Mary Chain lead singer Jim Reid to Creation Record's Alan McGee, the man who would sign the band to their first record deal and become their manager, probably tendered with the master tape of the band's first demo/single ("Upside Down") in the hopes of gaining attention. According to Dave Thompson's book Alternative Rock: "They recorded another demo and mailed it to the then-tiny indy Creation Records, in the hope of getting a gig at label head Alan McGee's Living Room club. He was impressed, not only booking the band, but also issuing their first single." The note outlines the problems with equipment, financing, and engineers they experienced during the recording: "We didn't have very much money so we went into an 8 track studio and recorded it live (more or less) but it sounded f*cking awful. The guitar sound was terrible and the whole thing was very tame. Mainly because of the stupid bastard engineer who didn't understand what we were looking for. ... Hope you like it. It is called 'Upside Down' and was written by Jim Reid and William Reid." The letter ends with a list of band members, including original drummer Murray Dalglish who left the band at the end of 1984 in a dispute over money. A humorous and pivotal letter that led to the band signing with Creation and ultimately to their debut album Psycho Candy, one of the seminal indy albums of the 1980s. .

        The Talisman

Viking, New York 1984 - The Donald M. Grant edition, published in a limitation of 1200 copies, appears with some frequency, albeit at a cost commensurate with the care put into its production. Copies of the first trade edition signed by both King and Straub are exceedingly uncommon. This copy was inscribed on the 4th of August 1986 by Straub and on September 2, 1986 by King. Straub has written ' for William Kennedy. Thank you for your wonderful and appreciated comments, you're the sort of reader we're grateful to have. ' Below this inscription, King has written ' for William Kennedy. Thanks - and welcome to the territories.' A bright unread copy of the first, with just light bumps to upper corners. The jacket is flawless, but for a rubbed spot whether the upper spine joins the front panel. A distinctive copy of a singularly successful collaborative effort. The first edition, published by Viking in 1984. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
