        Democracy [Photocopied Typescript]

Ziegler Associates [ca. 1983], Los Angeles - Photocopied typescript of Didion's 1984 novel, with significant textual differences from the published book. An early typescript, reproducing some editorial annotations and her agent's stamp, with no publication information provided. Democracy was Didion's first novel in seven years, with two books of nonfiction in between. A post-Vietnam story involving the CIA, it could be seen as a fictional counterpart to her 1983 nonfiction book, Salvador: both tracked the underside of American involvement in Third World conflicts. Democracy was praised for its reportorial accuracy -- something Didion had cultivated in her nonfiction pieces -- but Didion challenged fictional convention by introducing herself as the narrator, the storyteller, and giving the novel a self-consciousness and reflectiveness more often found in her nonfiction than her fiction. 8-1/2" x 11" three-hole punched sheets; light green cardstock covers with title and author handwritten on the front cover; title written on bottom page edges; bound with two brass brads; near fine. An unusual, early state of a major novel by one of the most acclaimed writers of her era, winner of a Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation in 2007. One of 100 numbered copies, #36, with an original painting by Charles Bukowski (with tissue guard). A very elegant forest like scene, abstract, with lace-like images, signed in ink by Bukowski in the bottom right corner, "Buk". Also signed in full on the colophon page, where Bukowski has added his trademark drawing of "little man with bottle". 36 stories. The collection deals largely with drinking, women, gambling, and writing.         Edice Situace, nos. 1-15 (all published)

Jazzová sekce (Jazz Section), [Prague] 1983 - Quartos (30 × 21 cm). Original staple-stitched wrappers; 19, [1] pp. each. Numerous black-and-white reproductions per issue, printed on better quality stock. Occasional light wear to wrappers; rust to a few staples; still a very good set. The complete run of these fifteen catalogs of unofficial, conceptual Czechoslovak art from the Normalization era, semi-legally printed by the Jazz Section, an organization of jazz musicians that legally organized within the Czechoslovak Musicians' Union and thereby gained the right to publish bulletins for supposedly private use by its members. Until it was forced to close in 1986, the Jazz Section operated in a legal "gray zone": it thus played an important part in counteracting strict Normalization cultural policies by publishing material related not only to music, but also unofficial art and theater. For more on the Jazz Section, see 'Social Currents in Eastern Europe,' pp. 128. The head of the Jazz Section, Karel Srp, served as editor of the present series and wrote the short introductions to the catalogs. Each issue features numerous full-page photographic reproductions showing artworks, happenings, performances, as well as original text, biographical information, and lists of exhibitions. The artists covered are, in order of publication: Adriena ?imotová, Karel Miler, Jitka Svobodová, Milan Grygar, Emila Medková, Stanislav Kolíbal, Jan Svoboda, Eva Kmentová, Libor Fára, Václav Bo?tík, Petr ?tembera, Karel Malich, Dalibor Chatrný, Hugo Demartini, Vladimír Janou?ek. Overall design by Joska Skalník. Working in a range of media, from wire sculptures to performance art and happenings, many of them worked in obscurity during the 1970-80s, but have since emerged to greater acclaim KVK, OCLC show complete runs at the Clark, University of Toronto, Watson Library (Metropolitan Museum), and individual issues at the Getty, Harvard, and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). The Czech National Library only holds three of the fifteen catalogs. Complete sets are very scarce. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Alan Turing: The Enigma; [together with] 3 typed letters signed from Hodges to Arthur Harris, Turing's school friend and "fag-master" at Sherborne School.

London: Burnett Books Limited, 1983 - Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver. With the dust jacket. With 3 single sheet letters, dated 31 July 1978, 30 October 1983, and 10 November 1983 respectively, and 2 newspaper clippings, the first an article by Hodges on Turing from The Sunday Telegraph, 7 September 1986, the second a review of Hodges's biography, laid-in. Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Spine a little rolled and ends bumped, top edge lightly foxed, dust jacket extremities rubbed with two tape repairs to inside, overall a very good copy. Letters and newspaper clippings creased and folded as typical. 8 pages of black and white photographic plates. First edition, first impression, of Hodges's esteemed biography of the great computer science pioneer, accompanied by letters from the author to Arthur Harris requesting information on Turing as a student and, later, thanking him for his assistance. In his first letter to Harris, the head boy of Turing's school house, Westcott, Hodges writes, "I am doing my best to reconstruct Turing's perhaps rather chequered career at Sherborne School. Your name features in Mrs Sara Turing's memoir of her son, and Mr Peter Hogg [another of Turing's schoolmates] also spoke warmly of you when I met him a few weeks ago. I understand that Alan Turing was your fag in the year 1926-27. Mr M. H. Blamey also told me a story of Turing's arrival at Sherborne during the General Strike: apparently it was you who took the message when he telegraphed from Southampton. Anecdotes of this kind will all help me to construct a readable narrative, and I wonder whether you would be able to help me with further comments?" Harris evidently responded in the affirmative, for several of his stories are included in the book, including why he appointed Turing as his personal servant, or "fag", as part of the traditional public school practice of fagging. He had been impressed, he said, by Turing's initiative in cycling the 63 miles from Southampton to Sherborne so as not to miss the first day of the summer term when the trains were cancelled due to the strike. In turn, Harris's younger brother, David, would become Turing's fag on joining the school "and found him well-meaning but absent-minded as a master" (p. 58). In the second and third letters, Hodges expresses his dismay at forgetting to return a photograph album and history of the school which Harris had evidently lent to him, and thanks him for his "warm response" to the biography, which had been published in the UK the month previous, in October. Alan Turing: The Enigma was the basis for the Academy Award-winning film, The Imitation Game (2014), starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. Copies of the first UK edition (the US edition was published later the same year) are very scarce in commerce. [Attributes: First Edition]
