        Winter's Tale [Presentation Copy]

San Diego: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, September 20, 1983. First Edition, First Printing.. Hardcover. About Fine/Very Good at least. 688 pp. Hardcover. Publisher's original wheat colored cloth over boards, silver lettering and decorations to spine and front cover. Presentation Copy. Inscribed and dated a full month prior to publication. "8/12/1983 To Ruth Rogers, Mark Helprin ". [Not a shred of proof, but seems likely to be American ex-pat to England, River Cafe chef and owner Ruth Rogers. Additionally, years later, this copy found it's way into the library of the well known collector Otis Skinner Blodgett with his personal bookplate, signed and dated by him [London, 2001], affixed to the front paste-down. Book Condition: Gently pushed spine ends, superficial scuff mark to spine, else fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Wear to the extremities, spine ends and tips show salt and pepper loss; top to bottom crease to front flap, small tear to rear fold at bottom edge with bits of loss. Fred Marcelino's great cover illustration bright and vibrant, as is Jerry Bauer's full page portrait of Helprin filling up the rear panel. A very solid copy, still bright crisp, for this title which mostly got read to pieces. In our humble opinion a real tour de force: magical realism meets Americana as a long love letter to the greatest city in the world. Rare presentation copy with delightful provenance.

        Gorillas In the Mist.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1983. First edition of Fossey's classic work. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated throughout. Signed by Dian Fossey on the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear. Signed first editions are rare. One of the most important books ever written about humans connection to the natural world, Gorillas in the Mist is the riveting account of Dian Fossey's thirteen years in a remote African rain forest with the greatest of the great apes. Fossey's efforts to ensure the future of the rain forest and its remaining mountain gorillas are captured in her own words and in candid photographs of this fascinating endangered species. As only she could, Fossey combined her personal adventure story with groundbreaking scientific reporting in an unforgettable portrait of one of our closest primate relatives. Although Fossey's work ended tragically in her murder, Gorillas in the Mist remains an invaluable testament to one of the longest-running field studies of primates and reveals her undying passion for her subject. It was made into the 1988 film directed by Michael Apted and starring Sigourney Weaver as Dian Fossey. It was nominated for five Academy Awards.

The Maltese Falcon (Special Arion Press Edition Limited to 400 copies).

Arion Press 1983 - A fine copy of this private press book. Handsomely bound in a black moroccan leather spine stamped brightly in silver, and finely woven blue-gray cloth boards. With a striking image of a falcon, fashioned in leather and outlined in silver with a red eye. The falcon, measuring 6.25" high x 3.25 across at the base, appears on the front and rear boards. A splendid Arion production, a fine copy, virtually unread. With a tipped-in photograph of Hammett circa 1927, and a folding 4-panel panoramic photograph of Sam Spade's San Francisco as seen from the bay. With numerous full-page vintage photographs illustrating key locations in the text. With a special section at the end of the book: "On the Photographs." In the original slipcase with leather label on the spine; the case is near-fine with a touch of wear at the top of the spine edges. A splendid, collectible copy of this hard-boiled detective classic featuring Sam Spade. Samuel Dashiell Hammett (1894 – 1961) was an American author of hard-boiled detective novels and short stories, screenwriter, and political activist. Among the enduring characters he created are Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon), Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man), and the Continental Op (Red Harvest and The Dain Curse). Hammett "is now widely regarded as one of the finest mystery writers of all time". In his obituary in The New York Times, he was described as "the dean of the. 'hard-boiled' school of detective fiction." Time magazine included Hammett's 1929 novel Red Harvest on its list of the 100 best English-language novels published between 1923 and 2005. His novels and stories also had a significant influence on films. Hammett was first published in 1922 in the magazine The Smart Set. Known for the authenticity and realism of his writing, he drew on his experiences as a Pinkerton operative. Hammett wrote most of his detective fiction while he was living in San Francisco in the 1920s; streets and other locations in San Francisco are frequently mentioned in his stories. He said that "All my characters were based on people I've known personally, or known about." His novels were one of the first to use dialogue that sounded authentic to the era. "I distrust a man that says when. If he's got to be careful not to drink too much. It's because he's not to be trusted when he does". (The Maltese Falcon, 1929)Raymond Chandler, often considered Hammett's successor, summarized his accomplishments in The Simple Art of Murder: "Hammett was the ace performer. He is said to have lacked heart; yet the story he himself thought the most of, The Glass Key, is the record of a man's devotion to a friend. He was spare, frugal, hard-boiled, but he did over and over again what only the best writers can ever do at all. He wrote scenes that seemed never to have been written before."         Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade), A Facsimile of the Manuscript, 2 Vols.; A Bruccoli Clark Book

Detroit: Gale Research Company, 1983. First edition thus. Hardcover. Fine. First edition, 1983. Two volumes, complete. Full leather with beautiful color inlay and onlay Zaehnsdorf bindings with gilt titles and gilt edges housed in cloth slipcase, clean unmarked text, Fine copies in Near Fine slipcase. Published by Gale as a Bruccoli-Clark title, this deluxe edition comes from Matthew Bruccoli's own collection, and we have been told by Rick Layman (Bruccoli's publishing partner) that Zaehnsdorf bound fewer than 50 sets this way to market to collectors, but that Gale trashed the majority of these, as they remained unsold. Matthew Joseph Bruccoli (1931-2008) was the foremost F. Scott Fitzgerald scholar and bibliographer of his time. Additionally, he wrote on, and edited critical editions of Hemingway, Hammett, Cozzens, Thomas Wolfe, John O'Hara, and Vladimir Nabokov. He studied bibliography under the tutelage of Fredson Bowers and worked with Jacob Blanck on the Bibliography of American Literature. He was responsible for the republication and rediscovery of dozens of forgotten American novels, and went on to be the editor and publisher of the 400+ volume Dictionary of Literary Biography, and was the chief editor of the University of Pittsburgh Press bibliography series.

CURSE OF LONO (THREE BOOKS, THREE DIFFERENT EDITIONS)

Bantam and Taschen, 0000. A little collection, consisting of: 1) The FIRST EDITION by Bantam, 1983, first printing, softcover, 10 by 7 inches, which, other than an almost invisible bit of foxing to edges, is in fine condition. 2) The much larger hardcover (15 by 11), Taschen's FIRST TRADE EDITION, in smooth white boards with Steadman's goofy lettering in black. I can find no indication of date on this. It is also in fine condition, in a fine illustrated dustjacket. 3) The "whopper," published by Taschen and dated on the title page "December 1, 2004." (Later than the smaller first trade edition.) This is their FIRST LIMITED EDITION. 17½ by 13 inches. Bound in white cloth decorated with Steadman's lettering and artwork (the blue and brown, cigarette in mouth portrait of Thompson that also appears on the cover of the softcover edition and on the dustjacket of the other Taschen edition). The page after the title page contains: "LONO/ This book is copy number AP 155/200 of a worldwide edition of one thousand copies" followed by Thompson's signature in ink, followed by (printed) "Hunter S. Thompson - Woody Creek, Colorado" followed by Steadman's signature and a drawing in ink, followed by (printed) "Ralph Steadman - Kent, England" and "December 1, 2004." Both signatures and the drawing are "actual," not facsimiles. A few pages farther on, there are two (facsimile) letters tipped in, one from the editor of Running Magazine asking Thompson to cover the Honolulu Marathon, which led to the expedition that led to this book being written, and one from Thompson to Steadman about this, beginning with, "I think we have a live one this time, old sport." This is one of those "books" that could be more accurately described, perhaps, as an extravaganza ("extravagonzo?"). It is in fine condition, as too are the accessories that go with it - the burnt orange cloth covered slipcase that is printed on the front and one side, and the heavy-duty cardboard box that is printed front and back and two sides, and has a label on one side declaring (once again) that this is " 1 GB/AP 155 of 200," the numerals being written in black ink.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Ralph Steadman.

        Hiroshima

1983. Signed. HERSEY, John. Hiroshima. With a New Poem by Robert Penn Warren and Silk-Screens by Jacob Lawrence. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1983. Quarto, original full black morocco, original black cloth slipcase. $2300.Limited edition of this “quietest and best” account of Hiroshima, number 868 of only 1500 copies signed by John Hersey, Robert Penn Warren, and Jacob Lawrence, and illustrated with eight color serigraphs by Lawrence.“The quietest and the best of all the stories that have been written about the most spectacular explosion in the time of man” (New York Times Book Review). “John Hersey once described himself as a novelist of contemporary history… In 1946 he visited Hiroshima, interviewed survivors of the first atomic bomb attack, and published the New Yorker article which changed him profoundly. In Hiroshima… Hersey drew from the victims themselves the understanding of history that had eluded him as a war correspondent. The six Hiroshima residents told him how they had lived before the bomb struck, why they were not killed, and precisely how illness, exhaustion, and personal sorrow had qualified their survival” (Contemporary Novelists, 634). Stylistically, Jacob Lawrence’s haunting illustrations, printed in 11 colors, owe an obvious debt to Cubism and Matisse: “the flat, sharp overlaps of form, the reliance on silhouette, and a high degree of abstraction in the color. But there is something more demotic behind those colors. They came, as Lawrence acknowledged, more from his experience in Harlem than from other art” (Robert Hughes). LEC 535. Pristine, fine condition.

Herbarum, arborum, fruticum, frumentorum ac leguminum. Animalium praeterea terrestrium, volatiliu[m] & aquatilium, ... Kreutter, Bäume, Gesteude, unnd Frücht, ...Frankfurt am Main, Christian Egenolph, 1546. 4to. With a large woodcut on the title-page showing a gardener at work with his tools, and about 800 woodcut illustrations in the text. About 700 show trees, fruit, edible and medicinal plants, while the rest show insects, a tick, coral, shells, various sea and land animals and a view of a pond with plants and birds. With all woodcuts coloured by a contemporary hand. Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, richly blind-tooled in a panel design with two rolls; brass clasps and catch-plates with engraved decoration.

Adams H-294 (1 copy); Nissen, BBI 2345; VD 16, H2193 (4 copies); cf. Klebs, Early Herbals 71 (undated Egenolf ed.); Wellcome I, 1983 (same undated Egenolph ed.); not in Stiftung Botanik. Rare first dated edition of an extensively illustrated early herbal, coloured by a contemporary hand, with the title and most of the plant and animal names in Latin and German. The Folger Library notes that F.W.E. Roth attributes this herbal to Adam Lonicer (1528-1586) of Marburg and Frankfurt, who married Egenolph's daughter and became a partner in the firm after Egenolph died in 1555. Egenolph published all three editions of the present herbal. VD 16 lists the undated one as ca. 1545 (citing only the Wellcome Library copy), making the present 1546 edition the second. Another appeared in 1552.This copy has early owner's inscriptions by Georg Volland, in Latin at the foot of the title-page and in Greek on the facing endleaf. The Volland family were noblemen in and around the Duchy of Wittemberg in the 16th century, and the binding is likely to come from that region as well. With some browning and stains, especially in the first and last leaves. The binding is worn. A 1546 herbal with ca. 800 woodcuts, in contemporary richly blind-tooled pigskin.

THE NEVERENDING STORY Translated by Ralph Manheim

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1983.. Octavo, cloth. First U.S. edition. A translation of DIE UNENDLICHE GESCHICHTE (1979). "In an interesting commentary on the act of reading fantasy and on the nature of story itself, a boy named Bastian becomes so involved in reading of the amazing adventures of Atreyu in a book, also called THE NEVERENDING STORY, that he becomes part of the story himself, managing to save the fantasy land of the story in the process. The book's use of mythic materials and fantasy tropes is far more sophisticated than one might expect from a children's book, and the common theme of experience and maturity is also treated well. As might be expected from a novel celebrating the joys of reading, the book is considerably better than the 1984 movie version." - Barron (ed), Fantasy and Horror (1999) 7-115. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. A lovely copy. (#155795)
