TELEX PERSAN: IN THE NAME OF REVOLUTION ("TELEX IRAN: IN THE NAME OF REVOLUTION")

Paris, France: Contrejour, 1983. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Paris, France: Contrejour, 1983. Softcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 104 pages. Collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, including the Aperture Edition, which is based on it. The edition is now rare. A stupendous production by Gilles Peress and Claude Nori: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Gilles Peress. His telexes are brilliantly reproduced at the bottom of the images and give an urgency not only to the photographs but to the life of one restless photojournalist living in a foreign land from day to day. Essay by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi appended at the end. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in Paris, France to the very highest standards. In publisher's original inner plastic and outer paper shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the finest photographic account ever produced by a Western photojournalist of the Iranian post-revolutionary situation. Peress was appalled by the one-sided and heavily propagandistic American coverage of the Iranian hostage crisis. With money from the National Endowment for the Arts, he flew to Iran on virtually a whim and photographed what he saw, experienced, and felt during a five-week period, from December 1979 through January 1980. The resulting images were lavished with praise and with a rare unanimity: "A book of brilliant visual nervousness between covers" (Cornell Capa). "I appreciate so much the visual strength of Gilles Peress' photographs. They depict an Iran so different from the one I knew through reading and my travels" (Henri Cartier-Bresson). Apart from the sheer vitality of the images, the book has become a landmark in photographic book design and has lost none of its daring innovativeness, impeccable beauty, and palpable immediacy. There is a fluidity to Peress' images that could only have come from his intuitive genius. Peress may never have read Canetti's great book on crowds, "Crowds And Power". But his book is the closest thing photography has ever achieved in capturing groups in action: "To the crowd in its nakedness everything seems a Bastille" (Elias Canetti). "I wanted to be there, to see it with my own eyes, without responsibility or commitment, either political, visual or conceptual, to anyone" (Gilles Peress). A masterpiece, this is a "must-have" title for Gilles Peress collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black marker on the front free endpaper by Gilles Peress. It is also magnificently titled, signed, and dated in metallic-silver marker on the publisher's outer black paper wrap by the photographer: "Telex: Persan Gilles Peress 2006". The signature glows beautifully against the light. This is an Import title, has been out-of-print for a very long time, and is now very highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the First Edition still available online, is the only such signed and titled copy we have ever found, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap (both the inner plastic and the outer paper), and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 100 plates. Gilles Peress' "Telex: Iran" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living photojournalists. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GILLES PERESS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3931141365.

        Jean Dubuffet. Photographie Originale

S.l.: Par l'auteur, 1983. - 1 planche photographique

        Typed Letter Signed

1983. A letter from Jackie Kennedy, written in her capacity as editor at Doubleday, rejecting three poems by the late James T. Farrell. Secretarially typed, but signed in full as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. A very courteous rejection, in which she says she was "extremely moved" by the "lovely" poems, for which she found no support from the sales department. Folded for mailing, one small spot not affecting text; else fine, with envelope. Farrell's three poems ("Unremembering Dreams," "Summer Moving Wind," and one untitled), apparently still unpublished, are also included; the poems are in holograph and each is signed by Farrell. Farrell, best known for the Studs Lonigan trilogy, died in 1979; in 1963, following the assassination of John Kennedy, one of Farrell's poems was inserted into the Congressional Record. .

A.M.S., 3pp stapled together with one loose summary page, on yellow lined 4to paper, n.p., March 16, 1983

His manuscript, "Preparing Americans for the 21st Century," declaring our need to increase "exploitation of knowledge" in the age that Seaborg defines as the Third Revolution. "The revolution inspired by our founding fathers gave birth to our nation; the Industrial Revolution, inspired by our inventive spirit, gave us a place among the nations of the world; and the present Third Revolution - the Revolution of Science, inspired by our educated men and women - is determining whether we can keep our place in the world. . we have all been part of a new tide of exploration and discovery, not limited to the dimensions of the past, but creating new dimensions of its own." This was scripted for a conference focusing on American High School Education. Seaborg earnestly points out our country's lack of interest in science and mathematics in comparison to Japan and Western Europe, saying that we as a nation " . are indulging in what has been very aptly characterized as 'Economic Unilateral Disarmament.' " He summarizes his sentiments that "science centers have an important role to play in helping to alleviate our country's crisis in the teaching of mathematics and science at the pre-college level . The ASTC [Association of Science Technology Centers,] helps us all to make our contributions to the solution of this pre-college teaching problem." Signed beneath the title, "Glenn T. Seaborg."
