        Area Archive

[New York: n.p. [New York: n.p., 1983-1987]. Contents uniformly in near fine to fine condition.. Collection of 125 flyers and posters from New York's hottest and most inventive nightclub, Area, during the mid-1980s. Although it was a disco, Area was a purely visual, happenings-based venue, where New York's art, music, design, fashion, and literary worlds collided; Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, or Jean-Michel Basquiat might be brushing up against Michael Forbes, David Byrne, or Georgio Armani, and Stephen Saban would be there to remind them what happened afterwards in his Details magazine column. Unlike other downtown clubs that focused on music or dancing, Area was driven by art and the scene that it engendered, through its theme nights, elaborate installations, and inventive flyers that seemed to embody Warhol's concept of business art. This archive includes Area's famously unconventional invitations, posters, articles, booklets, and other ephemera from the nightclub's short-lived, yet significant, four-year history. Features two cards enclosed in envelopes addressed to Richard Serra. A defining celebration of the creative hedonism of 1980s New York and a remarkable documentation of the "Bright Lights, Big City" years.

William Klein: Photographe Etc. (Signed First Edition)

Centre Georges Pompidou / Herscher Paris: Centre Georges Pompidou / Herscher, 1983. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Klein to Ira Lowe on the half-title page: "to Ira, / a little catalog not made, heureusement in USA (see page 7) / All my best / Bill." Ira Lowe was a Washington, DC based lawyer who specialized in the arts and, over the course of a lengthy career, represented some of the most significant artists and writers of the twentieth century, famously (and successfully) arguing in front of the Supreme Court for the concept of "blockage discount" in valuing artists estates. The reference in the inscription is to a image of a summons in New York State Klein received after being sued for defamation of character by Aperture and a second publisher for a million dollars each after he publicly criticized one of their books. The case was still pending at the time the surrounding interview in this book took place. Near Fine without dust jacket as issued. A fierce proponent of modern art in America, Stieglitz’s infamous 291 Gallery on Fifth Avenue was the first to champion the avant-garde of European and American art and photography. His stewardship of Strand had a profound effect, cultivating in Strand one of the greatest modernist photographers of the era. Aperture has drawn some of his most notable images for this portfolio from the Paul Strand Archive; they include City Hall Park, New York, 1915; From the El, New York, 1917; and Yawning Woman, New York, 1916. Describing Strand’s oeuvre, Stieglitz said: “In the history of photography there are but few photographers who, from the point of view of expression, have really done much work of any importance. And by importance we mean work that has some relatively lasting quality, that element which gives all art its real significance. . . . The work is brutally direct. Devoid of any flim-flams; devoid of trickery and any ‘ism,’ devoid of any attempt to mystify an ignorant public.” A Very Fine, Pristine, As New copy.

        Companion Volume V, Part 3, The Coming of War 1936 - 1939

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1983. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is it - the rarest, most keenly sought, and most difficult to acquire of the Official Biography Companion Volumes - Companion Volume V, Part 3. There was just a single printing in England, which included sheets for this U.S. Houghton Mifflin edition. Consequently, the British and U.S. editions look almost exactly alike. The sole difference in terms of shelf appearance from the British edition is the publisher's name at the base of the spine. Here is the first U.S. edition, near-fine in a fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is excellent - clean and bright with virtually no wear, square corners, and bright spine gilt. The contents are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red-stained top edge of the text block shows no fading whatsoever. The only flaw is some neat pencil notation along the right edge of the ffep and a small triangle at the top right corner of the ffep has been clipped. The crisp dust jacket is unclipped and exceptionally clean. There are no tears, no losses, and virtually no wear. And the notoriously fade-prone title print on the spine is bright and unfaded. This is a premium copy. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e3.

Paris: Moreau, (1983). Oblong 12mo. (26) pp. Illustrated by Baltazar. From an edition of 220 copies, this is one of forty signed by the author and by the illustrator, and handcolored. Reproduced entirely by serigraphy, the text is from the author's own manuscript. The abstract black and white illustrations have been colored with pencils by Baltazar. In a unique binding by Véronique Halska of full red snakeskin, with a nickel-plated brass tubular spine. Protected by a black morocco chemise, titled in silver, with a slipcase of morocco and gray paper. The original pictorial wrappers have been mounted on black morocco, which is edged with red snake skin, and fit into the opposite end of the slipcase. Véronique Halska, a Belgian binder, has been widely exhibited in Europe, her bindings appearing at the Centre Pompidou and at the exhibition "Petits Formats Relis" at the Wittockiana Museum in Belgium. Her goal is to "integrate in bindings very diversified materials, always trying to insert in the work fineness and equilibrium, all in harmony with the text."         The Alchemist

San Francisco: Harper Collins, 1983. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author, "Dear _______ Pay the price of your dreams Paulo Coehlo". Fine in a fine dust jacket. The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams. Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paul Zindel said of its protagonist, "A boy named Santiago joins the ranks of Candide and Pinocchio".

        Weasels at Work

North Tawton: The Morrigu Press. VG+. 1983. Limited Edition. Softcover. Sewn in brick red wrappers with paper label bearing titles on upper wrapper, internally clean and bright, illustration of weasels (by Hughes?) to title page, number 69 of an edition of 75 signed by Hughes on the limitation page, printed at The Morrigu Press in 14pt Perpetua on Roma hand-made paper. , The Morrigu Press was founded in 1979, when Ted Hughes' sister, Olwyn, gave his son, Nicholas, her Albion hand press and a large fount of Monotype Centaur. Olwyn, who together with her brother had been publishing limited editions of his work under the Rainbow Press imprint, had bought the press in the early 1970s, planning to experiment with design ideas for books. However printing proved more complicated than expected and so she gave the press to her nephew. Nicholas had learned printing and bookbinding at school, had discovered a talent for it and so set about printing limited editions of his father's work. Ted Hughes was a talented illustrator, but The Morrigu Press publications are almost the only place where his illustrations were published. The exceptions being the Rainbow Press book, 'Earth Moon', and, as a single drawing of a bull, on or in Moortown Elegies and the trade edition of Moortown Diary. , 9.5" by 6.5" .
