The order of the genes C, Sh and Wx in Zea Mays with reference to a cytologically known point in the chromosome. [Bound as issued with:] A correlation of cytological and genetical crossing-over in Zea Mays.

      First edition, the very rare offprint issue, of these landmark papers, bound back-to-back in a single offprint, which describe the "revolutionary" discovery of 'jumping genes'. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1983 was awarded to McClintock "for her discovery of mobile genetic elements" (nobelprize.org). "Beyond any question, this is one of the truly great experiments of modern biology, and the conclusion-that pairing chromosomes heteromorphic for two or more regions exchange parts at the same time that they exchange genes assigned to these regions-will doubtless continue to stimulate as much research during the next as they have during the 25 years following its publication" (Gabriel & Fogel, pp. 267-8). No copy of this offprint listed in OCLC.

"Some of the most profound genetic discoveries have been made with the help of various model organisms that are favored by scientists for their widespread availability and ease of maintenance and proliferation. One such model is Zea mays (maize), particularly those plants that produce variably colored kernels. Because each kernel is an embryo produced from an individual fertilization, hundreds of offspring can be scored on a single ear, making maize an ideal organism for genetic analysis. Indeed, maize proved to be the perfect organism for the study of transposable elements (TEs), also known as "jumping genes," which were discovered during the middle part of the twentieth century by American scientist Barbara McClintock. McClintock's work was revolutionary in that it suggested that an organism's genome is not a stationary entity, but rather is subject to alteration and rearrangement-a concept that was met with criticism from the scientific community at the time. However, the role of transposons eventually became widely appreciated, and McClintock was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1983 in recognition of this and her many other contributions to the field of genetics.

"Barbara McClintock began her scientific career at Cornell University, where she pioneered the study of cytogenetics - a new field in the 1930s - using maize as a model organism. Indeed, the marriage of cytology and genetics, became official in 1931, when McClintock and graduate student Harriet Creighton provided the first experimental proof that genes were physically positioned on chromosomes by describing the crossing-over phenomenon and genetic recombination. Although Thomas Hunt Morgan was the first person to suggest the link between genetic traits and the exchange of genetic material by chromosomes, 20 years elapsed before his ideas were scientifically proven, largely due to limitations in cytological and experimental techniques. McClintock's own innovative cytogenetic techniques allowed her to confirm Morgan's ideas, and these techniques are numbered among her greatest contributions to science" (Pray & Zhaurova, p. 169).

The two papers were published back-to-back in the journal and, unusually, together in the same offprint. The paper by Creighton and McClintock refers twice to the "preceding paper" without a citation, assuming the reader will read the two together. Creighton's doctoral dissertation under McClintock's mentorship provided the basis for their landmark joint paper, which was unique in merging cytological with genetic data. The companion paper by McClintock set the essential stage with data on the cytological and genetic features that Creighton applied.

M. Gabriel & S. Fogel, Great Experiments in Biology, 1955. L. Pray & K. Zhaurova, 'Barbara McClintock and the discovery of jumping genes (transposons),' Nature Education, Vol. 1 (2008).. 8vo (258 x 176 mm), pp. 485-497, [3, blank], text illustrated Original printed wrappers, former owners' signature and name stamps on upper cover. 1 p. ALS, IN ORIGINAL AIR MAIL ENVELOPE, TO DAVID GOTHARD, CO-FOUNDER OF THE RIVERSIDE STUDIOS, LONDON.

      8 October 1983 - 1 pp. ALS, 200 x 150 mm, on stiff card, to the verso of which Hals' painting of Hamlet, cut from a magazine, has been affixed. Envelope dated 8 October 1983. Fine. In both form and content, a wonderfully elegant letter of refusal. Gothard had asked Joan Littlewood to come to the Riverside as a guest producer: 'J.L to D.G -- Sorry for delayed reaction to yr kindly letters -- situation here so unstable that I have only this day found peace to open the letters which have been waiting, in a menacing pile -- for months. I am flattered by yr invitation -- but as a guest producer I would be a disaster. It's not my game. I have no feeling of obligation towards T[heatre].R[oyal]. E.15. I couldn't bear the place, it was impossible when we moved in -- + couldn't be improved. Delighted with yr success and trust that health and harness will hold. And here is yr Franz Hals award. Joan.' East 15 drama school grew out of Littlewood's groundbreaking Theatre Workshop, now most often remembered for its premiere productions of Oh! What A Lovely War and Shelagh Delaney's A Taste of Honey, both later filmed. By the time this letter was written Littlewood had left England and was living in France with Baron Philippe de Rothschild (whose autobiography she ghosted). The letter is written in a riot of random capitals and lower cases, all in Littlewood's beautiful hand -- even the envelope's wording has been underlined in alternate red and blue double rules.

        Lambert-Index (4 Bände KOMPLETT) - Bd. 1/ 2: Stellenindex zu Johnann Heinrich Lambert "Neues Organon I/ II/ Bd. 3/ 4: Stellenindex zu Johann Heinrich Lambert "Anlage zur Architectonic I/ II". Forschungen und Materialien zur deutschen Aufklärung: Abteilung 3, Indices;

      Stuttgart- Bad Cannstatt: Frommann-Holzboog 1983 ff... je Band ca. 400 Seiten; Gebundene Ausgabe. Bei dem Neuen Organon und der Architectonic handelt es sich um die beiden philosophischen Hauptwerke Lamberts. Sie zählen zu den einflußreichsten Werken des 18. Jahrhunderts und bilden zugleich ein wichtiges Bindeglied zwischen Wolff und Kant, der 1770 in Anlehnung an das Neue Organon statt der Kritik der reinen Vernunft eine eigene Phänomenologie schreiben wollte. Nicht weniger stark ist der Einfluß, den Lamberts Architectonic auf Kant und dessen Begriffsbildung ausgeübt hat. Sie führt die Fragestellungen der Wolffschen Ontologie weiter und stellt sie zugleich in einen umfassenderen Zusammenhang. Die vorliegenden Indices möchten dazu beitragen, die Philosophie Lamberts besser zu erschließen und ihren Einfluß einer exakten Überprüfung zugänglich zu machen. Sie enthalten zunächst jeweils in einem Hauptindex das gesamte Sprachgut und daneben mehrere Sonderindices. Dazu gehören neben einem Personenindex insbesondere ein Index des lateinischen Sprachguts, der bei dem Mangel an einschlägigen Lexika für das Latein des 18. Jahrhunderts eine wichtige Ergänzung bietet. Die hier angebotenen Bände befinden sich in einem ordentlich erhaltenen Zustand; KOMPLETTPREIS für 4 Bände; bei Versand ins Ausland erfragen Sie bitte zuerst die Versandkosten;

        Jean Dubuffet. Photographie Originale.

      Par l'auteur 1983 - - Par l'auteur, S.l. 1983, 42x42cm sur papier Ilford 60x50cm, 1 planche photographique. - Grand portrait photographique original en noir et blanc de Jean Dubuffet réalisé par Marc Trivier à Paris en 1983. Portrait d'artiste, d'anonyme, de fou, d'abattoir ou d'arbre : Marc Trivier a photographié chaque sujet avec la même intensité interrogative. Toutes réalisées dans le même format carré, élémentaire et clos, sans retouche ni recadrage, les photographies semblent moins mettre en scène un sujet - célèbre ou inconnu, élu ou déchu, vivant ou mort - qu'interroger une présence. «Ce qui m'intéressait, ce n'était pas de photographier simplement un corps ou un visage, mais cette situation particulière qui est quelqu'un en train de faire la photo de quelqu'un d'autre.» Trivier dévêt l'oeuvre de ses effets et dévoile l'énigmatique nudité du corps photographique. "Dans sa cosmogonie, chaque chose, chaque être, végétal, animal ou humain, mérite le même respect. Car tous sont confrontés à la même loi d'airain : la solitude. " (Luc Desbenoit in Télérama, le 05/03/2011 à l'occasion de la rétrospective Marc Trivier à la Maison Européenne de la Photographie). Tirage argentique non signé, comme la plupart des oeuvres de Trivier. Epreuve unique tirée par l'artiste. Une déchirure en tête et en pied, traces de pliure marginale, une trace de pliure angulaire, toutes sans atteinte à la photographie. Rarissime photographie en très grand format d'un des photographes contemporains les plus importants. [Attributes: First Edition]

Box in shape of book with all edges gilt, label on inside front cover of box, "To the Owner of this Box. After you have read a Book put it again in the Box. Little books, when laid about, may be soiled or lost. Learn this lesson while you are young - A PLACE FOR EVERY THING, AND EVERY THING IN ITS PLACE." The individual pamphlets are fine; the box is worn on the edges and slightly soiled; inside hinge professionally restored, generally very good. A selection of moral tales for children grouped into four Packets; the last Packet -- D -- is subtitled Missionary Subjects and contains "Sambo and his Bible", about a Jamaican slave. Each of the pamphlets is illustrated with an engraving suitable to the story. The box/binding is similar to that pictured on p. 45 in Ruari McLean's VICTORIAN PUBLISHERS' BOOK- BINDINGS IN PAPER (1983), published by The Religious Tract Society (same publisher) and dated 1853. This is a charming set and a remarkable survivor in this condition.
See an Image.
The Ladies Charity School-house Roll of Highgate: or, a Subscription of Many Noble, Well-Dispossed Ladies for the Ease of Carrying it on [caption title]

      First edition.. Edges a little rubbed; two silk ties lacking (two present); lacking the front free endpaper. Very nice copy.. Wing B-3152. 8vo, contemporary red morocco with elaborate gilt decorated patterns of floral ornaments, handles, knobs and shells on the covers, and five compartments on the spine with a repeating pattern of smaller handles and knobs around spider-like figures. Four engraved plates. A famous example of a publication for charity. Several of these were bound for presentation in an elaborate fashion similar to this one, but those had individual presentation gilt stamps on the covers (See Mirjam Foot, "The Charity School Binder," The Book Collector, Spring, 1983). William Blake was the founder and keeper of the Ladies Charity School, a boarding house school for homeless or destitute children which was entirely dependant on charitable contributions. Here Blake thanks his patrons and appeals to other ladies for charity. The second part of the text, Silver Drops, or Serious Things, is a treatise by Blake on charity. Albany is the crucible where Kennedy's Irish immigrants—machine politicians and lowlifes, oucasts and swells, many members of the author's fictional Phelan family—have come to forge their version of the American dream. "Inevitable comparisons to James Joyce and his delineations of his native Dublin abound in discussions of Kennedy’s work, and the American author’s selective use of stream of consciousness and stylistic experimentation enhance the comparisons." (Literary Encyclopedia) The Albany Cycle's crowning achievement, following Legs and Billy Phelan's Greatest Game, is Ironweed, awarded both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction and generally acknowledged as Kennedy’s masterpiece. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. The Name of the Rose [Signed]

      San Diego, New York, London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich [A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book], 1983. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good +. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first American edition of this breakthrough Umberto Eco novel (light pushing to the spine ends, spine shows mild evidence of the book having been read, front board's upper right corner tapped, slight impression to the upper margins of pages where the reader presumably marked his or her place with a clean paper clip - from which no staining or marking resulted), in a Very Good + dust jacket (spine panel lightly sunned, light edge rubbing), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO on the title page. An historical murder mystery set in Italian monastery in the year 1327 and Eco's debut novel, the novel combines semiotics, biblical analysis, medieval studies, and literary theory. [Eco is a semiotician of the first order and a University Professor, essayist, philosopher, literary critic, and novelist.] In the story, a Franciscan friar, William of Baskerville, and his novice Adso of Melk -- who narrates the story, arrive at an Italian monastery to attend a theological disputation only to find the monastery disturbed by a recent suicide. A number of other monks then die under mysterious circumstances and William is asked to conduct an investigation. The novel provided the basis for the 1986 movie of the same name starring Sean Connery as William of Baskerville and Christian Slater as Adso of Melk. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of Umberto Eco's notable breakthrough novel, SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO.
