The Dirty Mop : Unlimited Action Paintings and Poems. [Poems; Action Paintings; Jung Kwang's Travels; Ceramics; Lithographs]

Berkeley : Asian Humanities Press ; Seoul : Po Chin Chai, 1983., 1983. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. Inscribed by Author(s). 135 pp. : chiefly illustrations, some in color ; numerous photographs ; 35 cm. ; OCLC: 11766799 ; LC: ND2073.6.Z8 ; a rare collection of action photographs, ceramics and calligraphic paintings and lithographs executed by Jung Kwang, the Mad Monk ; " The present volume is an attempt to present a partial retrospective of his paintings including the latest work which has expanded into the use of lithographs....In 1980-81, he took an extended trip, his first to the U.S. and Europe, giving demonstrations of his painting style..."--preface ; "Jung Kwang, the painter, has his artistic roots firmly placed within a style of art that was nourished by the monastic communities of East Asia. Using only the brush and ink, monks made their art using rapid and yet disciplined brush strokes. The paintings only took seconds to complete; they could not be retouched or corrected; each was finished when the brush left the paper. As might be imagined, this style was particularly favored by the Zen schools. The paintings were used as a test for the state of enlightenment of the painter....Jung Kwang began to separate his art from this traditional school and with that separation came many questions about the value of his work. The controversies of his art continue to the present....Having introduced all sorts of new subjects into his paintings: bulls, guardian figures, roosters, fish, and, more shocking, penises on all the animals and even coming out of the head of Dharma, it is little wonder that the traditionalists were horrified..."--Introduction ; Jung Kwang's reputation as "The Mad Monk" is here fully represented by the use of color, non-traditional brushes and pens, even to the shocking photographs of him using his penis as th e brush on a series of paintings! ; he was ordained a monk in the Chongye Buddhist Order at Tong-do Monastery near Pusan in 1962 and practiced meditation under direction of Master Kuha, and was later a member of the Chongye National Council as its art consultant, but was then expelled in 1983, presumably for his movement away from traditional forms ; nonetheless, there are many who would consider the paintings in this book enlightened visual Zen koans of a sublime nature ; SIGNED presentation by Jung Kwang from 1986 on the front ep ; folio, bound in color pictorial stiff paper wrappers ; some wear, but otherwise VG. Very scarce, with only 25 copies known held by libraries worldwide. [This online listing contains text in Chinese and Korean fonts].

Brvtvm fvlmen: or The bull of Pope Pius V. concerning the damnation, excommunication, and deposition of Q. Elizabeth : as also the absolution of her subjects of their oath of allegiance, with a peremptory injunction, upon pain of an anathema, never to Obe

Printed by S Roycroft for Robert Clavel at the Peacock, London 1983 - [a2-a6]+[b-b7]+[c-c7]+[d-231]+[5] pages. Small square octavo (7 ¾" x 6 ¼") bound in full leather. Second edition. Thomas Barlow (1607-1691) was an English academic and clergyman, who became Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered, in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography, to have been a trimmer, a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic, and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists, but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession, having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession. Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots, and her supporters in their attempts to take over England "ex turpissima muliebris libidinis servitute". A brief English Catholic uprising, the Rising of the North, had just failed. Pius then issued a bull, Regnans in Excelsis, dated April 27, 1570, that declared Elizabeth I a heretic and released her subjects from their allegiance to her. In response, Elizabeth, who had thus far tolerated Catholic worship in private, now actively started persecuting them. Condition: Original bards with new period spine and red label with gilt lettering to spine corners rubbed and bumped else a good to very good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An outstanding pair of Richard Nixon letters regarding defensive missile systems and the nuclear arms race

New York, NY, 1983 & 1984 Two typed letters signed ?RN? on Nixon's personal New York City stationery. Both letters are written to Joseph Kingsbury-Smith of Hearst Newspapers in Washington DC. Each measure 7.5" x10.5"The first letter is dated December 21, 1983, and reads: "With regard to your letter of December 12th, I hope that you will be able to follow through in urging joint Soviet/American development of non-nuclear defense systems in space. As you note, I covered this issue only briefly because of space limitations on pages 37 and 38 of Real Peace. I believe that a formal proposal that the Soviet Union join us in sharing research on such systems could well be the centerpiece of any arms control agreements that might be reached at a summit meeting. If we could proceed along these lines, the argument that developing a nulear defense system is an escalation of the arms race is completely demolished. If both countries go forward together, the goal would be to develop a common shield. If either acts sin

The books and dust-jackets are all in very handsome and pleasing condition. FIRST EDITION COMPLETE OF ONE OF THE MOST MONUMENTAL HISTORICAL TASKS EVER UNDERTAKEN, RESULTING IN ONE OF THE GREAT HISTORICAL WORKS EVER PRODUCED. Randolph Churchill, who began this great work with Martin Gilbert in the early 1960’s had the exclusive use of Sir Winston’s letters and papers. The form in which is the work is cast is summed up in the phrase that Randolph Churchill quotes from Lockhart: "He shall be his own biographer." And the authors present Churchill, a far as possible, through his own words. The first volume covers the years from Churchill’s birth to his return to England from an American lecture tour on the day of Queen Victoria’s funeral, in order to embark on his political career. The final volume spans Churchill’s life from the defeat of Germany in 1945 to his death nearly twenty years later. ‘No statesman of modern times--or indeed of any earlier age--has left such a wealth of personal letters, such a rich seam of private and public documentation, such vivid memories in the minds of those who worked closest to him or were at his side at both historic and amusing moments. Through these materials, assembled by Martin Gilbert during more than twenty years, one can trace Churchill’s moods, aims, actions, hopes and farsightedness. The many-sided nature of Churchill’s abilities, his enormous capacity for work when well into his seventies, his literary achievements, his optimism, his humanity, his humour, his belief in man’s capacity for self-improvement and survival, fill this volume with a rich tapestry of people and events, dominated not by the day-to-day struggle of politics and international conflicts but by an abiding sensitivity. Randolph Churchill died just after the second volume of this massive work was produced and Martin Gilbert continued the writing . He is one of Britain’s most distinguished historians. Following Randolph’s death in 1968 he was appointed the Official Biographer. During the twenty-five years spent on the biography, which reached completion in 1988, Mr. Gilbert wrote many other books on modern European history including AUSCHWITZ AND THE ALLIES, THE HOLOCAUST, and THE SECOND WORLD WAR as well as serving as editor of thirteen volumes of Churchill documents. The eight volume work offered here has been hailed as " stupendous achievement.of immense and permanent value." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Love

Dallas: Somesuch Press, 1983. 24pp. This copy features a romantic designer binding by the British bookbinder Nicky Oliver and is also inscribed by Stanley Marcus, noted miniature book collector and proprietor of the Somesuch Press, to his friend and fellow microbibliophile Donn Sanford. A collection of love poems by Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Browning, illustrated with two United States "Love" stamps and a British stamp in honor of St. Valentine's Day. Printed by the Feathered Serpent Press in black with vignettes and ornaments in bright red. Inspired by the hints of red, small illustrations, and swirling floral motifs in the text, Oliver bound the book in fair goatskin that she painted and printed with pieces of floral lace dipped in coral-hued leather dye. The covers have a subtle sheen, and in the artist's statement she notes that "Gold foil was stencilled onto the surface of the leather and distressed to highlight the lace design." Gilt-tooled dots also trace some of the lines of the pattern and decorate all three pink edges of the book. Pieces of lace and oil-based inks were used to relief-print the pink, leather-jointed endpapers, which were also accented with subtle gilt-tooling. Housed in a handsome black quarter-morocco box adorned with decorated leather strips matching the binding and a gilt-titled pink lettering piece to the spine. Oliver's artistic background is in illustration and design, and she seeks to incorporate elements of these into her bindings. She was named a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2010 and has won several awards in their recent competitions. These achievements include "the Silver Triple" in the 2010 competition, with first prize for set book, open choice book, and the Edgar Mansfield Medal for best book. Extremely fine. (Bradbury, p. 281). (2 7/8 by 2 5/8; 73x67mm).

TELEX PERSAN: IN THE NAME OF REVOLUTION ("TELEX IRAN: IN THE NAME OF REVOLUTION") - Rare Signed And Titled Copy of The First Edition - ONLY SIGNED AND TITLED COPY ONLINE

Paris, France: Contrejour, 1983 - 1st Printing. Signed. 104 pages. Published in 1983. Collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, including the Aperture Edition, which is based on it. The edition is now rare. A stupendous production by Gilles Peress and Claude Nori: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Gilles Peress. His telexes are brilliantly reproduced at the bottom of the images and give an urgency not only to the photographs but to the life of one restless photojournalist living in a foreign land from day to day. Essay by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi appended at the end. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in Paris, France to the very highest standards. In publisher's original inner plastic and outer paper shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the finest photographic account ever produced by a Western photojournalist of the Iranian post-revolutionary situation. Peress was appalled by the one-sided and heavily propagandistic American coverage of the Iranian hostage crisis. With money from the National Endowment for the Arts, he flew to Iran on virtually a whim and photographed what he saw, experienced, and felt during a five-week period, from December 1979 through January 1980. The resulting images were lavished with praise and with a rare unanimity: "A book of brilliant visual nervousness between covers" (Cornell Capa). "I appreciate so much the visual strength of Gilles Peress' photographs. They depict an Iran so different from the one I knew through reading and my travels" (Henri Cartier-Bresson). Apart from the sheer vitality of the images, the book has become a landmark in photographic book design and has lost none of its daring innovativeness, impeccable beauty, and palpable immediacy. There is a fluidity to Peress' images that could only have come from his intuitive genius. Peress may never have read Canetti's great book on crowds, "Crowds And Power". But his book is the closest thing photography has ever achieved in capturing groups in action: "To the crowd in its nakedness everything seems a Bastille" (Elias Canetti). "I wanted to be there, to see it with my own eyes, without responsibility or commitment, either political, visual or conceptual, to anyone" (Gilles Peress). A masterpiece, this is an absolute "must-have" title for Gilles Peress collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black marker on the front free endpaper by Gilles Peress. It is also magnificently titled, signed, and dated in metallic-silver marker on the publisher's outer black paper wrap by the photographer: "Telex: Persan Gilles Peress 2006". The signature glows beautifully against the light. This is an Import title and is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the First Edition still available online, is the only such signed and titled copy we have ever found, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap (both the inner plastic and the outer paper), and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 100 plates. Gilles Peress' "Telex: Iran" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living photojournalists. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GILLES PERESS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3931141365. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Telex Iran: In the Name of Revolution.

Aperture, New York 1983 - First American edition, published simultaneously with the first French edition of the photojournalist's first book. Folio, original stiff photographic wrappers, photographic endpapers. Inscribed by Gilles Peress. In fine condition. Roth 101; Open Book, 330; Parr and Badger II, 252. Peress described his art well when he said, "I work much more like a forensic photographer in a certain way, collecting evidence. I've started to take more still lifes, like a police photographer, collecting evidence as a witness. I've started to borrow a different strategy than that of the classic photojournalist. The work is much more factual and much less about good photography. I don't care that much anymore about "good photography." I'm gathering evidence for history, so that we remember" (U.S. News). "Telex Iran chronicles the crisis in United States-Iran relations in late 1979 and early 1980 when militant Iranian students seized the American Embassy and held its inhabitants hostage. Peress' book is oversized, graphically bold and provides numerous perspectives on an extremely sensitive political problem Along with reportage of major political events, Peress' pictures record mundane spaces, places, people and moments of Iranian life in order to emphasize the incomprehensibility and confusion of the environment before his eyes. In this way the photographer is able to visualize precisely the culture gap that made such a historical misunderstanding possible. It is a brilliant tactic" (Roth, 28).
