Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 3, The Coming of War 1936 - 1939

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1983 - The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. This is it - the rarest, most keenly sought, and most difficult to acquire of the Official Biography Companion Volumes - Companion Volume V, Part 3. There was just a single printing in England, which included sheets for this U.S. Houghton Mifflin edition. Consequently, the British and U.S. editions look almost exactly alike. The sole difference in terms of shelf appearance from the British edition is the publisher's name at the base of the spine. Here is the first U.S. edition, near-fine in a fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is excellent - clean and bright with virtually no wear, square corners, and bright spine gilt. The contents are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red-stained top edge of the text block shows no fading whatsoever. The only flaw is some neat pencil notation along the right edge of the ffep and a small triangle at the top right corner of the ffep has been clipped. The crisp dust jacket is unclipped and exceptionally clean. There are no tears, no losses, and virtually no wear. And the notoriously fade-prone title print on the spine is bright and unfaded. This is a premium copy. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e3. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Love

Dallas: Somesuch Press, 1983. 24pp. This copy features a romantic designer binding by the British bookbinder Nicky Oliver and is also inscribed by Stanley Marcus, noted miniature book collector and proprietor of the Somesuch Press, to his friend and fellow microbibliophile Donn Sanford. A collection of love poems by Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Browning, illustrated with two United States "Love" stamps and a British stamp in honor of St. Valentine's Day. Printed by the Feathered Serpent Press in black with vignettes and ornaments in bright red. Inspired by the hints of red, small illustrations, and swirling floral motifs in the text, Oliver bound the book in fair goatskin that she painted and printed with pieces of floral lace dipped in coral-hued leather dye. The covers have a subtle sheen, and in the artist's statement she notes that "Gold foil was stencilled onto the surface of the leather and distressed to highlight the lace design." Gilt-tooled dots also trace some of the lines of the pattern and decorate all three pink edges of the book. Pieces of lace and oil-based inks were used to relief-print the pink, leather-jointed endpapers, which were also accented with subtle gilt-tooling. Housed in a handsome black quarter-morocco box adorned with decorated leather strips matching the binding and a gilt-titled pink lettering piece to the spine. Oliver's artistic background is in illustration and design, and she seeks to incorporate elements of these into her bindings. She was named a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2010 and has won several awards in their recent competitions. These achievements include "the Silver Triple" in the 2010 competition, with first prize for set book, open choice book, and the Edgar Mansfield Medal for best book. Extremely fine. (Bradbury, p. 281). (2 7/8 by 2 5/8; 73x67mm).

        Impronte.

An Archive of 20th Century Sado-Masochism: Letters to The Black Knight (1975-1983)

[Northampton, Massachusetts] 1983 - A remarkable collection of nearly 30 love letters (including five photographs) sent by a Baptist minister from Massachusetts to his elder lover: "The Black Knight." The letters document in graphic and loving detail illustrated their illicit Sado-Masochistic affair that began in the spring of 1975 and continued through to the spring of 1982. All but one has the original mailing envelope, near fine. Most of the letters are handwritten in the pastor's attractive calligraphic hand, including two elaborately illustrated by him. All are well-written, indicative of a highly educated man from an established Dutch-American family, and in nearly all of the letters he writes with unconstrained passion of his insatiable love, spiritual and physical, and of his desperate need to be sexually enslaved and brutalized by his "Almighty Regent . my Black Knight of infamous mystic stirrings." Included are two early albumen prints (family portraits), and three contemporary color photographs taken at the height of their affair, showing the pastor's Church, the pastor and the elderly Black Knight, and the Black Knight seated in his apartment. As it appears likely that the pastor was married at the time of the affair (he fathered children, and played an active leadership role in The American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts throughout his 35-year ministry), the names of both men have been withheld.

The order of the genes C, Sh and Wx in Zea Mays with reference to a cytologically known point in the chromosome. [Bound as issued with:] A correlation of cytological and genetical crossing-over in Zea Mays.

First edition, the very rare offprint issue, of these landmark papers, bound back-to-back in a single offprint, which describe the "revolutionary" discovery of 'jumping genes'. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1983 was awarded to McClintock "for her discovery of mobile genetic elements" (nobelprize.org). "Beyond any question, this is one of the truly great experiments of modern biology, and the conclusion-that pairing chromosomes heteromorphic for two or more regions exchange parts at the same time that they exchange genes assigned to these regions-will doubtless continue to stimulate as much research during the next as they have during the 25 years following its publication" (Gabriel & Fogel, pp. 267-8). No copy of this offprint listed in OCLC.<br/><br/> "Some of the most profound genetic discoveries have been made with the help of various model organisms that are favored by scientists for their widespread availability and ease of maintenance and proliferation. One such model is Zea mays (maize), particularly those plants that produce variably colored kernels. Because each kernel is an embryo produced from an individual fertilization, hundreds of offspring can be scored on a single ear, making maize an ideal organism for genetic analysis. Indeed, maize proved to be the perfect organism for the study of transposable elements (TEs), also known as "jumping genes," which were discovered during the middle part of the twentieth century by American scientist Barbara McClintock. McClintock's work was revolutionary in that it suggested that an organism's genome is not a stationary entity, but rather is subject to alteration and rearrangement-a concept that was met with criticism from the scientific community at the time. However, the role of transposons eventually became widely appreciated, and McClintock was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1983 in recognition of this and her many other contributions to the field of genetics. <br/><br/> "Barbara McClintock began her scientific career at Cornell University, where she pioneered the study of cytogenetics - a new field in the 1930s - using maize as a model organism. Indeed, the marriage of cytology and genetics, became official in 1931, when McClintock and graduate student Harriet Creighton provided the first experimental proof that genes were physically positioned on chromosomes by describing the crossing-over phenomenon and genetic recombination. Although Thomas Hunt Morgan was the first person to suggest the link between genetic traits and the exchange of genetic material by chromosomes, 20 years elapsed before his ideas were scientifically proven, largely due to limitations in cytological and experimental techniques. McClintock's own innovative cytogenetic techniques allowed her to confirm Morgan's ideas, and these techniques are numbered among her greatest contributions to science" (Pray & Zhaurova, p. 169). <br/><br/> The two papers were published back-to-back in the journal and, unusually, together in the same offprint. The paper by Creighton and McClintock refers twice to the "preceding paper" without a citation, assuming the reader will read the two together. Creighton's doctoral dissertation under McClintock's mentorship provided the basis for their landmark joint paper, which was unique in merging cytological with genetic data. The companion paper by McClintock set the essential stage with data on the cytological and genetic features that Creighton applied. <br/><br/> M. Gabriel & S.
