Bevezetés a politikába. [The Eye and the Hand. Introduction to Politics.]

AB Független Kiadó, Budapest 1983 - The silkscreen design on cover is by László Rajk. First edition. Samizdat. Printed in 1200 copies. In publisher's illustrated wrappers. (6), 5-73, (1) p. Samizdat edition of Gáspár Miklós Tamás' political philosophical book on common good. Tamás (b. 1948) emigrated from Romania to Hungary in 1978 for political reasons. He taught at University of Budapest until 1982 when he was dismissed again because of political reasons. He could only publish abroad or underground, as samizdat publication, like this edition, which is his first book issued in Hungary. "A szem és a kéz" was translated into French and published in Genève in 1985 under the title 'L'Oeil et la main". Samizdat editions, mostly political pamphlets, appeared in Hungary in the 1970s in the poor form of carbon copies of typescripts. Later in the 80s the so-called Democratic Opposition in Hungary established semi-underground publishings, like "AB Független" to publish not merely political literature but also literature that was banned by the Communist politics. Somewhat rubbed at spine. One page printed on different paper. Overall in fine condition. In publisher's illustrated wrappers First edition. Samizdat. Printed in 1200 copies.         Eternal Chaotic Inflation" in Modern Physics Letters A, Volume 1, Number 2, May 1986, pp. 81-85

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE FIRST INCLUSION OF ETERNAL INFLATION IN THE CHAOTIC INFLATION THEORY. In this paper, the Russian-American theoretical physicist, Andrei Linde shows that his 'Chaotic Inflation' theory models quantum fluctuations in the rate of inflation, thus demonstrating "that any inflationary theory with an unbounded potential is eternal" (Anderson, Cosmic Compendium, 35). Eternal chaotic inflation "remains the "standard model" of inflation more than 20 years after its conception" (Wenner Collection). Evidence for this model continues and is persuasive. Linde shows "that the evolution of the universe in the chaotic inflation scenario has no end and may have no beginning. According to this scenario, the universe consists of an exponentially large number of different mini-universes inside which all possible metastable vacuum states and all possible types of compactifications are realized" (Linde, "Eternal Chaotic Inflation", 81). "Those regions with a higher rate of inflation expand faster and dominate the universe, despite the natural tendency of inflation to end in other regions. This allows inflation to continue forever, to produce future-eternal inflation" (Anderson). "In 1983, Andrei Linde demonstrated that quantum fluctuations could begin inflation without the highly unlikely condition of a high plateau in the energy potential hill, and he named the result "chaotic inflation." In 1986 [and in this paper], Linde extended his theory to include the notion of eternal inflation. When begun, "eternal chaotic inflation" would continue to grow in random (chaotic) ways through other quantum fluctuations, and thus be eternal-hence the term "eternal chaotic inflation." An outgrowth of the Big Bang theory, 'eternal inflation' is a model of the universe in which "the inflationary phase of the Universe's expansion lasts forever in at least some regions of the Universe. Because these regions expand exponentially rapidly, most of the volume of the Universe at any given time is inflating. All models of eternal inflation produce an infinite multiverse" (Anderson, Cosmic Compendium, 35). CONDITION & DETAILS: Original wraps, complete issue. [9.75 x 6.5 inches]. Ex-libris bearing a stamp, etc. on the front wrap, otherwise clean, bright, and tight. No other library marks within whatsoever. Pristine within. Very good ++.

Haida Monumental Art - Villages of the Queen Charlotte Islands

University of British Columbia Press, 1983. 218 pages. From limited edition of 1600 copies. "Concerned entirely with the Haidas of the Queen Charlotte Islands of the last century, the intricacies of the kinship patterns of the great families, and how they saw themselves as part of a fantastic, but in its own terms, logical, cosmos, and most of all how this was all expressed in their remarkable architecture with its perfectly integrated massive carved and painted embellishments, the great totem poles of the Haidas." - from Foreward. "The documentary photographs that survive are among the few remaining records which illustrate the richness and variety of Haida monumental art. Of the more than five hundred carved poles which appear in the plates, only about fifty were removed to museums for safekeeping. The remainder have perished entirely or survive at the village sites as decayed fragments overgrown with the lush vegetation of the islands." - from Preface. Light external wear and soiling to cream-coloured cloth-covered boards. No external markings. Discreet bookplate and bit of writing inside front board. Blindstamp to lower corner of title page. Bit of writing in upper left corner of title page. Remnant of card pocket inside back board. Binding tight. A quality copy of this magnificent work. Former Library Copy

Unpublished Typescript about George Orwell and Nineteen Eighty-Four

(n.p.) [ca. 1983], (n.p) - In 1983, Robert Stone, National Book Award-winning novelist, was commissioned to write a piece on George Orwell and his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, as that calendar year approached. In the piece, Stone made an effort to reclaim Orwell from the conservative right wing, which had taken his most famous, anti-totalitarian novels -- Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm -- to be explicit condemnations of the Soviet Union and Communism, and by implication all leftist thought itself. Instead, Stone argues that Orwell's writing in Homage to Catalonia -- not to mention his fighting on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War -- identifies Orwell as someone with both a socialist sympathy and "a certain affinity with what I believe is best about the United States," a kind of Puritanism that is characterized by "rectitude.conscience and common sense." He goes on to point out that Orwell "was the sort of radical who makes enemies on both sides of epic struggles," owing to his "originality and intelligence, [and] above all his thoroughgoing honesty, [which] always got him in trouble. A writer and man more predictable and dull, less infernally scrupulous would have had a better time of it." Stone adds that Orwell was idealistic but non-ideological -- as Stone was himself -- and deeply committed to the kind of "pragmatism that has characterized American moral thinkers from Jefferson to James to Neibuhr." He concludes that "We may never produce a greater political novel than Nineteen Eighty-Four" and that "it has done its work for us" in shaping our fears and cautions sufficiently for us to have avoided the totalitarian dystopia that was latent in the post-War years of the Cold War. The confluence of writer and subject here was, in many ways, a near-perfect one but the piece seems never to have been published; we can find no record of it; a cover letter from Stone's wife, Janice, indicates this was done for Thames Television, but whether it was produced or used remains unknown to us. One of Stone's novels includes an allusion to a critical moment in Nineteen Eighty-Four: Stone's character explains that one has "to look the gray rat in the eye" -- an allusion to the torture by rats that Winston Smith, in Nineteen Eighty-Four, is faced with, which causes him to "break" and betray himself and his loved ones. 18 pages, ribbon copy typescript, with Janice Stone's cover letter, laid into an agent's folder. Fine. An unknown Robert Stone piece, on a subject that touches close to many of the central and pervasive themes of his own writings. Unique. [Attributes: First Edition]

Weapons Systems and Political Stability - A History

University Press of America, Inc. / The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, 1983. 1043 pages. Bibliography. List of books and articles by the author. "Carroll Quigley, historian and teacher at Georgetown University, died January 5, 1977, leaving unfinished this manuscript upon which he had been working for the preceding twelve years. His colleagues and friends, upon reviewing the manuscript, decided to press forward with its publication. Although the manuscript is frustratingly incomplete in time sequence - it ends its narrative in the fifteenth century - it carries further toward completion the uniquely anthropological holistic analysis of history which is the theme of his earlier works... Quigley is incredibly successful in abstracting essence from reality - in analyzing mankind's experience in socializing. He describes weaponry as not an end in itself. It is part of a whole in which by far the greater part of persuasion and cooperation is accomplished by institutionalization of ideologies. This book is one of those human efforts which shapes the mind." - from Foreword by Harry J. Hogan. Moderate external wear. Some rubbing to large silver lettering upon front board. Light pencil underlining and marginal lines. Binding tight.
