1983. . Collection dating from 1970 to 1983 James Lafayette Dickey was an American poet and novelist. He was appointed the eighteenth United States Poet Laureate in 1966. He also received the Order of the South award. Dickey was also a novelist, known for Deliverance (1970) which was adapted into an acclaimed film of the same name released in 1972. 1 Typescript: • Signed ts. of poem, 1 p.,"The Heaven of Animals", n.d. 5 Typed Letters Singed: • TLS with envelope to Richard Trombly, 22 February 1972, re Americans who think that poetry is written by sissies. • TLS to Perry E. Gresham, Chairman of the Board of Bethany College, 29 August 1972 (and carbon reply, 5 September 1972, from Gresham's secretary). He mentions having spoken with then Senator Jay Rockefeller and voices his strong distaste for strip mining.  "In all, I have become a confirmed West Virginia buff, mainly because there a truly beautiful wilderness and a tremendously exploitative industry meet face to face, and with a drama that is scarcely to be found anywhere else. In other words, we fight it out in West Virginia, and if we lose there, we lose the planet." Stapled to the letter is a carbon of a letter from the recipient's secretary explaining that he is away. • TLS to Mr. Fischer, 29 May 1974, thanking her for her kind words and signing the cards for his son's collection. • 2 TLS to Antic Hay Books (Don Stine), 17 February 1982 and 23 November 1983. Best wishes to you and your family. Sincerely, James Dickey" 1 Ephemera: • Bio of Dickey, also signed by poet Dan Masterson. 8 × 11" signed 1971 "The Poetry Center"   1 Book (signed): • Signed copy in jacket of the first edition of Deliverance (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1970).         Winter's Tale [Presentation Copy]

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt September 20, 1983, San Diego - 688 pp. Hardcover. Publisher's original wheat colored cloth over boards, silver lettering and decorations to spine and front cover. Presentation Copy. Inscribed and dated a full month prior to publication. "8/12/1983 To Ruth Rogers, Mark Helprin ". [Not a shred of proof, but seems likely to be American ex-pat to England, River Cafe chef and owner Ruth Rogers. Additionally, years later, this copy found it's way into the library of the well known collector Otis Skinner Blodgett with his personal bookplate, signed and dated by him [London, 2001], affixed to the front paste-down. Book Condition: Gently pushed spine ends, superficial scuff mark to spine, else fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Wear to the extremities, spine ends and tips show salt and pepper loss; top to bottom crease to front flap, small tear to rear fold at bottom edge with bits of loss. Fred Marcelino's great cover illustration bright and vibrant, as is Jerry Bauer's full page portrait of Helprin filling up the rear panel. A very solid copy, still bright crisp, for this title which mostly got read to pieces. In our humble opinion a real tour de force: magical realism meets Americana as a long love letter to the greatest city in the world. Rare presentation copy with delightful provenance.       First edition. Signed by the artist. Original printed cardboard with stapled cotton ties. Photographic artist's book documenting New York's Broadway. 249 images laid out horizontally, three images to a panel, on 83 individual panels, each attached end-to-end so that it becomes an uninterrupted continuum of street views tracing New York City's most celebrated thoroughfare as it travels the length of Manhattan from its Southernmost point at The Battery all the way to the Spuyten Duyvil. With the Manhattan bus map inserted to the rear as called for. A very good copy of a delicate production with a little rubbing and spotting to the extremities. Folded out in full the contents extend to 99 feet (30 metres). One of only 200 copies. Signed by Henderikse in pencil on the upper cover. Broadway's binding and format is quite evidently modeled on Ed Ruscha's 1971 book Dutch Details which he had published as a project related to Sonsbeek 71 at the Groninger Museum. This exhibition, which also included Henderickse's work, focused on site-specific work, non-traditional media such as artists' books, and other new forms to which the era's conceptually oriented art practices were giving rise.

New York: George Braziller, Inc.,, 1983. Folio. Contents loose as issued in printed wrappers. With the publisher's dark blue cloth-backed solander box and buff card slipcase. 152 leaves and 20 colour plates. An excellent copy in a slightly rubbed solander box and lightly worn slipcase with short closed tears a light creases to extremites. First facsimile edition of Matisse's late masterpiece, originally published in 1947. With an introduction by Riva Castleman and text translated into English by Sophie Hawkes. "At the age of seventy-five, during a twelve-month confinement to his bed, Matisse composed Jazz. The title itself evolved from the affinity Matisse felt between his own method of improvisation and that of jazz musicians. Actually, most of the scenes of Jazz are taken from circus life and represent sword swallowers, knife throwers, cowboys and tank swimmers. Several of the performers existed in life, for instance Codomas and Monsieur Loyal, a famous clown. The illustrations for Jazz were not conceived as original prints. Instead, they are splendid colour reproductions of the signs Matisse worked out with scissors, paste and pins. The artist first covered large sheets of white paper with thin washes of brilliant colours [brilliantly rendered in this edition]. From these he cut out figures and forms which he then arranged with paste and pins into bold patterns. These collages of painted pieces of paper (Matisse called them 'drawings with scissors') were reproduced by pochoir (stencil) using the same colours Matisse himself had originally mixed" (Leymarie, Read, & Lieberman, Henri Matisse, 1966, pp. 28-29).

The History of Middle Earth: The Book of Lost Tales; The Lays of Beleriand; The Shaping of Middle-Earth; The Return of the Shadow; The Treason of Isaengard; The War of the Ring; Sauron Defeated; The Lost Road and Other Writings; Morgoth's Ring; The War of the Jewels; The Peoples of Middle-Earth.

London: George Allen & Unwin; Unwin Hyman; Harper Collins, 1983 - 96 - 12 volumes, octavo. Original varicoloured boards, titles to spines gilt. With the dust jackets. An excellent set. First editions, first impressions; the complete set of this first publication of Tolkien's entire History of Middle Earth, in which tales, songs, poems, maps, illustrations, genealogical tables, and even linguistic primers for Tolkien's languages, give the fullest picture available of one of the most thoroughgoingly imagined worlds ever created in the history of fantasy literature. The enormous content presented in these twelve volumes was only hinted at in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and was drastically condensed into a single volume in the Silmarillion (1973). Edited by his son Christopher Tolkien. [Attributes: First Edition]

Gale Research Co., Detroit 1983 - 725 pp. 8.5 x 11. Kemble frontispiece from the first U.S. ed. Covers show slipcase wear as does top of spine on Vol. II. Slipcase sturdy with some age spots. The copy is not numbered as was pulled from the print run as publisher Frederick Gale Ruffner, Jr.'s personal copy, as certified by letter from his estate.
