        Die Namen der Bäume: Hylaea

Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven 1982 - 8vo, 422 pp, bound in brown buckram with the title stamped in black at the spine. Illustrated with b/w and color plates. Of a total edition of 740 copies, this is one of 240 numbered copies with a signed and dated photograph housed in a folder at rear, which has also been assigned the name of a particular tree. This is copy number 116, and is the "Mimosenbaum" copy. The now rare limited edition of one of the most essential artist's books of the 1980's. The book, which was exhibited at Documenta 7, begins with a list of the names of South American trees, and then segues into a narrative, interspersed with photographs and found images, the product of the artist's 18 month exploration of a Yanomomi village in Venezuela, a community which at that time had almost no contact with the outside world. Like his fellow artist Marcel Broodthaers, whose work he shares a dialogue with (Broodthaer's postcard 'Veritable Eau de Cologne / Fuchs Mais Qui Mangera le Fromage?' was a response to Baumgarten's exhibition 'T'E-NE-T'E. Eine mythologische Vorführung'), Baumgarten's work critiques institutional representation, and also explores the anthropological implications of naming. Fine.         FRIDAY

New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1982 Letter "D" of the lettered issue signed by Heinlein on the special limitation page. The limitation page states this is one of 500 numbered copies so I suspect this to be one of the overrun copies used for lettered issues. A mere hint of fade to the maroon cloth on the spine else fine in a fine example of the publisher's slipcase.. Signed. First edition, first printing. Hardcover.

        The BFG.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1982.. FIRST EDITION, a nice association copy, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR shortly after publication. Octavo, pp.224. Illustrated by Quentin Blake. Publisher's cloth in original dust-wrapper. Edges toned, small loss to top corner of jacket flap; near fine, with presentation note to flyleaf; To / **** / with love / Roald Dahl / 16 March, 1983 (flourish) This copy was purchased at Dahl's local bookshop (ticket to pastedown) and inscribed a few months after publication (14 October 1982). This volume is one of five inscribed Dahl books directly obtained from the recipient, a friend of Theo Dahl, the author's third child and only son. The books' owner spent much time around the Dahl house in Great Missenden and had an after-school job at Dahl and Son Antiques on the High Street. A separate written account of his time spent with the family is supplied with this book.

The BFG - Signed and Inscribed in the year of publication

London: Cape, 1982. A first edition, first printing published by Cape in 1982. A very good book with a short tear to the foot of the spine caused by a knock - this has caused a crease to the foot of some of the pages. SIGNED on the front endpaper by Dahl ('To Eli/with lots/of love/Roald Dahl/Oct. 20th 1982/). In a near fine unclipped wrapper, without fading. Rare to find this book signed in the year of publication.
