        Eleven Poems

Bracknell: Owen Kirton,, 1982. Octavo. Original buff wrappers, spine and front wrapper lettered in black. With loosely inserted additional poem in typescript and manuscript by the author. Edges toned, lower corner slightly creased; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. It was one of 250 copies, as noted in manuscript on the verso of the title page by the author. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page to her friend Katherine Kavanagh, the wife of the Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh: "For Katharine (sic), with much love from Elizabeth. August 1982." The dedicatee of Eleven Poems, Rose Smart, was Elizabeth's daughter by George Barker, by whom she had four children. Rose died of an overdose a few months before its publication, and the loosely inserted typescript poem, Rose Died, expresses Smart's guilt over her death. It is dated 7 July 1982, and includes 2 stanzas in manuscript by Smart. Rose Died was not published until 1984 in Canada, and was limited to 120 copies. The version printed in Collected Poems (1992) shows a one word change in the tenth stanza, where "its selfish purpose" becomes "its selfish reason".

The One Whose Eyes Open When You Close Your Eyes

Roslindale, Massachusetts: Pym-Randall Press. 1982. First. Uncorrected Proof. Folded and gathered photocopied sheets, staple bound into a mockup of the dustwrapper. The pages have been stapled together, the staples exhibiting oxidation, some staining to the jacket, overall a sound, good copy. On the title page, Wright has handwritten three epigraphs, from Einstein, Bliss Carmen, and another we cannot quite make out, but it might be Al Capone. Laid in is a two-page photocopied long galley of the front matter of the book (contents, acknowledgements, etc.), on the back of which Wright has written a letter, well before publication to another poet and close personal friend: "12 February 1982. Jim, I thought you might like to see this: the first page proofs of my book." Wright goes on to speak about their last visit together, and concludes with a drawing that we are at a loss to describe. A possibly unique construction of Wright's first important collection, with a nice association. .

Juwel romanischer Buchmalerei.

A possibly unique construction of Wright's first important collection, with a nice association. .
