        Shoeless Joe

Boston: Houghton Mifflin(1982). 1st edition/1st printing. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author on the half-title page: 'For Ed Morris With best wishes Bill Kinsella May 24/82 Chicago'. A blind-stamped (no color) embossment directly below that inscription reads 'Library of Edward L. Morris E.L.M.', so the book's previous owner was the person the author's inscription was written to. Straight, clean, very tight book with only that blind-stamp ed embossment to keep it from being 'as new'. The price intact, crisp and clean dustjacket has just a touch of the lower spine end bluing to the green (much less than normal), and a couple of very tiny edge nicks at the flap fold ends, but is otherwise in excellent condition. A lovely copy of this classic which was made into the movie 'Field Of Dreams' and which won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. A baseball-based fantasy about the power of dreams to move people. ; Signed by Author, 10, 20, NF/NF

        Original Artwork

1982. Three original pen-and-ink S. Clay Wilson illustrations for the German edition of Burroughs' Cities of the Red Night. Wilson was one of the group of artists who gained exposure in the underground comix of the 1960s counterculture. After R. Crumb, he is probably the best known of that group, and his images are almost certainly the most extreme: all of the underground comic artists sought to break barriers and defy convention, and Wilson's images are densely packed and full of overt sex and violence to an extreme degree. In this he was very much like Burroughs, whose verbal imagery and subject matter sought to shatter barriers, preconceptions and hypocrisies; the collaboration between the two of them seems in retrospect to have been inevitable. These drawings were displayed at the Los Angeles County Art Museum in the show "Ports of Entry: William Burroughs and the Arts," which sought to convey the influence Burroughs had had on visual arts. Extraordinary images, and probably the best illustrations ever of Burroughs' writings. Burroughs himself appears as a character in one of the images. Two of the images are 5-1/4" x 9", the third is 5-1/4" x 10"; all three are matted and framed to approximately 16" x 19". Fine. No Binding. Fine.

Photos In + Out City Limits: New York City ("photos In & Out City Limits: New York City")

New York City, NY: ULAE Incorporated(1982). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 70 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Robert Rauschenberg: Oversize-volume format. White linen cloth boards with metallic-silver titles beautifully embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Rauschenberg. Essay by Colta Ives. Matching white linen cloth slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Rauschenberg's "Photos In + Out City Limits: New York". The great artist's collection of black-and-white photographs on New York City. It is the partial fulfillment of his 30-year-old wish to photograph the entire United States, a project he never completed. Showcases his unique approach to photography as a process of discovery, selection, and assemblage of objects from everyday life. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. He makes no distinction between his photography and his painting, and he brings the same acute eye to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are formally rigorous, sensuous, and piercing. His celebrated method of appropriating found images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten). "A protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art. Rauschenberg didn't give a fig for consistency or curating his reputation; his taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a big-ness of soul and a richness of temperament that recalled Walt Whitman" (Robert Hughes). "Mine is the need to be where it will always never be the same again. Photography is the most direct communication of non-violent contacts" (Robert Rauschenberg). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Rauschenberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in charcoal pencil by Robert Rauschenberg. It is signed directly on the page, not on a tipped-in page even though it comes from the publisher. The signature beautifully matches the facsimile of his signature on the book's cover and title page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Many copies available online have major flaws because the color white soils very easily. According to dealers who knew him, Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and very few. A rare signed copy thus. 70 tritone plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.         A Bigamist's Daughter/That Night/At Weddings And Wakes/Charming Billy/Child of My Heart/After This/Someone/The Ninth Hour

Random House/FSG, New York, New York 1982 - This offering is for a complete set of Alice McDermott's eight works. All are in Fine/Near Fine condition and have been SIGNED by ALice McDermott on their respective title pages! The books are 1) "A Bigamist's Daughter" (1982) - her first book, published by Random House (all her later books were published by Farrar, Strauss & Giroux). A contemporary portrait of a new generation's search for - an avoidance of - commitment in life and love. There is a shadow (of previous laid-in newspaper clipping) between the front board and the front free endpaper. 2) "That Night" (1987) - its remarkable talent for evoking a world and its inhabitants, and its subtlety and artfulness in telling a story. A Finalist for the National Book Award, The PEN/Faulkner Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. 3) "At Weddings and Wakes" (1992) - this heartbreakingly tender, sad - and funny - book represents a new level of achievement for her. A Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. 4) "Charming Billy" (1998) - In this, her fourth novel, she gives us the story of Billy Lynch within the matrix of a tightly knit Irish American community, in a voice that is resonant and full of deep feeling. Winner of an American Book Award and the National Book Award. 5) "Child of My Heart" (2002) - a woman recalls her fifteenth summer with the wry and bittersweet wisdom of hindsight. Nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. 6) "After This" (2006) - Alive with the passions and trajedies of a determining era in our history, "After This" portrays the clash of traditional faith-bound life with modern freedom while also capturing the joy, sorrow, anger, and love that underpin, and undermine, what it is to be a family. Another Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. 7) "Someone" (2013) - Scattered recollections - of a curious childhood, of adolescent sexual awakenings, of motherhood, and, finally, of old age - come together in this resonant story of an unremarkable woman's unforgettable life. Shortlisted for the National Book Crictics Circle Award. 8) "The Ninth Hour" (2017) - In Catholic Brooklyn, in the early part of the twentieth century, decorum, superstition, and shame collude to erase the man's brief existence, yet his suicide, though never spoken of, reverberates through many lives - testing the limits and the demands of love and sacrifice, of forgiveness and forgetfulness, even across multiple generations. A Finalist for the 2017 Kirkus Award. Shipping charges to be advised depending upon where they are to be sent. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
