        Original Artwork

1982 - Three original pen-and-ink S. Clay Wilson illustrations for the German edition of Burroughs' Cities of the Red Night. Wilson was one of the group of artists who gained exposure in the underground comix of the 1960s counterculture. After R. Crumb, he is probably the best known of that group, and his images are almost certainly the most extreme: all of the underground comic artists sought to break barriers and defy convention, and Wilson's images are densely packed and full of overt sex and violence to an extreme degree. In this he was very much like Burroughs, whose verbal imagery and subject matter sought to shatter barriers, preconceptions and hypocrisies; the collaboration between the two of them seems in retrospect to have been inevitable. These drawings were displayed at the Los Angeles County Art Museum in the show "Ports of Entry: William Burroughs and the Arts," which sought to convey the influence Burroughs had had on visual arts. Extraordinary images, and probably the best illustrations ever of Burroughs' writings. Burroughs himself appears as a character in one of the images. Two of the images are 5-1/4" x 9", the third is 5-1/4" x 10"; all three are matted and framed to approximately 16" x 19". Fine.

Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane: [a story]. With illustrations by Mary Shepard

London: Collins 1982 - A nice copy in a dustwrapper that is slightly torn at outer corner of upper cover panel, and a little faded. Inscribed by the author, "Benedict Read, a little something in kind from your grateful P.L. Travers Spring 1982". "She's back! From where, we do not know and are not likely to be told, for it is one of Mary Poppins' characteristics that she never explains. However, here she is, pushing the perambulator, an upright figure with bright pink cheeks, bright blue eyes and the familiar turned-up nose, taking the children on a new adventure, making the Park Keeper quail and at the same time drawing him, too, into the general magic of Midsummer Eve . . ." (dustwrapper blurb). Benedict Read, son of Sir Herbert Read, was an art historian, for most of his career at the University of Leeds. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE DARK TOWER SERIES; VOLUMES I-VII: THE GUNSLINGER, THE DRAWING OF THE THREE, THE WASTELANDS, WIZARDS AND GLASS, WOLVES OF THE CALLA, SONG OF SUSANNAH, & THE DARK TOWER

[West Kingston, Rhode Island]: Donald M. Grant Publisher, Inc., [1982, 1987, 1991, 1997], 2003, and 2004. First editions. Fine copies in fine dust jackets and cloth slipcases. (21814). Octavo, seven volumes, cloth. Complete limited edition set of the Dark Tower series. Each book numbered and signed by King and the artists: Michael Whelan, Phil Hale, Ned Dameron, Dave McKean, Berni Wrightson, Darrel Anderson and Michael Whelan. Limitations are 500, 850, 1250, 1250, 1350, 1400 and 1500. "Different in tone from most of King's work - and perhaps more demandingly inventive than usual - these have an undeniable mythic charge, partly because of the alienated-adolescent theme that runs through them. As the series continued, it increasingly took on a quest structure typical of - and inhabited a landscape whose metaphysical pathos also evokes - pure Fantasy, though Post-Holocaust imagery also pervades the tale, and a self-aware AI is a major threat to the protagonists." - SFE online. Basis for a recent feature film and there is, according to the trade a television series, in the works. Barron (ed), Fantasy and Horror 6-194.

        The Color Purple

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982. First edition of Walker's classic work. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Alice Walker on the half-title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Judith Kazdym Leeds. A very nice example. Her third novel, The Color Purple won Alice Walker the 1983 Pulitzer Price, making her the first African-American woman to win one. "While Walker's first two novels end in the promise of good, The Color Purple ends in happiness, reunion and celebration. Walker has said that she took her great-grandmother's life, which included rape and childbearing at age 11, and gave it a happy ending. Once again she had begun with one of her ancestors' stories, completing and transmuting it through her art" (African American Writers, 351). "Critics have both praised and attacked Walker's use of black folk English to capture [protagonist] Celie's perspective. Walker responded, 'Language is an intrinsic part of who we are and what has, for good or evil, happened to us. And, amazingly, it has sustained us more securely than the arms of angels'" (New York Public Library, Books of the Century, 135).

Original poster: "12 Años de Lucha"

FPL, N.p. [San Salvador?] 1982 - Poster celebrating the twelfth anniversary of the Fuerzas Populares de Liberación "Farabundo Martí" (FPL). The FPL was one of five Marxist organizations that joined, in 1980, to form the FMLN, which is today the mainstream left party of El Salvador. The still somewhat provisional nature of the alliance in 1982 may be gauged from the fact that in this poster the FPL continues to maintain its own identity, publishing under its own imprint and adding a caption in the lower margin "Miembro del FMLN." Photo-illustrated with five scenes from the Salvadoran civil war, including active scenes combat, surrounding a quote by the Communist revolutionary leader Cayetano Carpio (aka "Marcial"). Not found in OCLC, though web search does turn up a copy at IISH (Netherlands). Photolithograph in colors; 56.5cm x 37.5cm (ca 22-1/4" x 15-1/2"). A vivid, unfaded example, free of wear; Fine.

        Daisies Never Tell

Sherman Oaks, California: Joesph J. D'Ambrosio, 1982. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/Publishers Slipcase. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Joseph J. D'Ambrosio. This is a story of love and sadness. Nell in the story is the grandmother of the author and illustrator and designer of arguably one of the most beautiful books by D'Ambrosio and of all his works not only of masterfully created pieces of book art but broadsides and prints, this is my personal favorite. I have many D'Ambrosio pieces and have sold may, but I have never called one or another my favorite. This is it. This book was a painful project by the artist and is an homage to both his grandmother and his mentor and fellow printer Mr. Mundell as D'Ambrosio refers to the man who taught him how to use an Adana letterpress. This book is limited to 50 copies and 10 A/P. It is set in 14pt. Joanna and contain, 20 leaves. Each leaf, printed on Rives BFK, is a printed over serigraph. All Serigraphs are produced by hand from handmade stencils. Some of the serigraphs are delicately produced one color flowers and some are as many as ten colors. The first five leaves are hand cut in the form of daisies, which peak through glass portals embedded in the front or the cove. Quite a remarkable presentation. The binding is dark green cowhide and glass over boards; Natsume end papers; clam-shell box of green Canson paper over boards with green felt. This is copy 48 of fifty and is signed by the artist/author on the two leaf title page, which opens to a hand cut garden of daisies. If you are wondering why I would sell my favorite book, it is because I have another copy with a personal inscription. This is a truly wonderful collectible of fine printing/bookmaking and creativity by one of the great book artists of our time, the late Joe D'Ambrosio.

        Shoeless Joe

Boston: Houghton Mifflin(1982). 1st edition/1st printing. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author on the half-title page: 'For Ed Morris With best wishes Bill Kinsella May 24/82 Chicago'. A blind-stamped (no color) embossment directly below that inscription reads 'Library of Edward L. Morris E.L.M.', so the book's previous owner was the person the author's inscription was written to. Straight, clean, very tight book with only that blind-stamp ed embossment to keep it from being 'as new'. The price intact, crisp and clean dustjacket has just a touch of the lower spine end bluing to the green (much less than normal), and a couple of very tiny edge nicks at the flap fold ends, but is otherwise in excellent condition. A lovely copy of this classic which was made into the movie 'Field Of Dreams' and which won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. A baseball-based fantasy about the power of dreams to move people. ; Signed by Author, 10, 20, NF/NF
