An Odd Bestiary, or a compendium of instructive and entertaining descriptions of animals, culled from five centuries of travelers' accounts, natural histories, zoologies, &tc., by authors famous and obscure, arranged as an Abecedary. Designed and illustrated by Alan James Robinson text compiled and annotated by Laurie Block. 2 Volumes

[Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, 1982. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. UNIQUE COPY WITH A SET OF THE 26 ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY ALAN JAMES ROBINSON. There were 300 copies of this book published; 200 were regular copies, 50 were deluxe copies with quarter leather binding and 50 others bound in full leather. The deluxe editions were issued with a set of proofs of the wood engravings and a set of proofs of the line-cut initials, with a large calligraphic manuscript initial beneath each image. The wood engraving proofs are lettered and signed by Robinson, and the line-cut proofs are signed both by Robinson and the calligrapher, Elizabeth Curtis. This copy shows some variation from the copies described in the prospectus. The colophon has been signed and numbered VI of L and internally seems to be a straightforward copy of the deluxe full leather edition. The binding varies somewhat from that pictured in the prospectus but uses many of the same elements. Also, the chemise is thicker that the regular chemise because it contains the 26 pencil drawings. This may have been a special copy prepared by Robinson for a particular subscriber/collector. This wonderful abecedary illustrates each letter of the alphabet with a masterful wood engraving by Robinson. Each animal is described at the bottom of its page in texts chosen primarily from the earliest first-hand accounts of the animal depicted. The descriptions are printed in red. The printed source of each text is identified, and at the end of the book there is a detailed and useful bibliography of these sources. A page with a small, different illustration of the animal precedes each animal's page, with the calligraphic letter written in red by Curtis. The animals depicted are often wondrous and strange, and some, such as the basilisk, may never have actually existed. This is a two volume folio (including a chemise containing an additional suite of illustrations, and the group of original pencil drawings). The bound volume is in full red morocco, done by David Bourbeau of the Thistle Bindery. The covers have a large central, slightly sunken panel, with the title in red and black and with a Sea Turtle device blocked in blind (Cheloniidae is the name for a species of sea turtles). The proofs contained in the chemise are unbound as issued within the original red morocco-backed, linen cloth covered boards. Both volumes are housed in a red morocco-backed cloth covered box, with the spine lettered and dated in gilt and a small Sea Turtle device in blind. "The blocks were cut by the artist at the Cheloniidae Press & printed by Harold P. McGrath in the summer of 1982.... Mackenzie-Harris set the types in monotype with some hand-setting by Arthur Larson. The text was compiled and annotated by Laurie Block. The hand calligraphy is by Betsy Curtis. The paper is Rives lightweight" (from the colophon). The 8-page prospectus is laid in. A remarkable production from this press. In fine condition. PRI/020112.

One hundred copies of the limited edition were issued with the Joyce portrait; the others in the run included different images by Abbott. "One of the most moving of her portraits is one reproduced here of James Joyce. The grey, strangely lifeless, enveloping light finds its way everywhere, describing without emphasis or favor the writer's stickpin, his hands, his right ear, his fine beaver hat, the deep tiredness of his elegant slouch. He seems the survivor of too difficult a battle, shell-shocked by the terrible labor of putting so many words in the precisely proper order." - "Looking at Photographs" by John Szarkowski.         Autograph Letter Signed ("Jello Biafra")

Octavo. One page, written on the verso of a Ballot for the Executive Committee of the Cuyahoga County Republican Organization for Governor and Lieutenant Governor. Undated but the election ballot on which it is written indicates 1982 or slightly thereafter. Fine. A letter of thanks from Jello Biafra, lead singer of the Dead Kennedys to a friend for the cassette the tapes: "I think I like Satan's Cheerleaders the best, but I'm surprised at how different the two sounded...", comments on his financial situation: "You're right, I'm pretty short on cash right now. Being a greenhorn independent is hard work & little pay but it's better than being owned & used." He mentions that he's never gotten around to making stickers, but "I'm sending you a nifty selection of flyers & posters for now. I'm sorry about folding them but mailing tubes are hard to come by out here." He concludes with a postscript about a mutual friend: "... now sporting a beat-up urban cowboy hat as well as a budding beer belly! He has also started to act more like a human being lately." .

[Art Flyers]: Paintings of Power and Beauty

San Francisco. February 1982. A collection of 15 flyers promoting the First International San Francisco Armory Show directed by Beat Generation and San Francisco Renaissance artist Michael Bowen. Photomechanically reproduced flyers on 8.5" x 14" sheets. Near fine with slight edgewear from hanging. Each flyer advertises the event along with a different artist on each poster with a photocopied image of one of their works. The exhibition included 50 artists and over "5000 works of art." Among the artists were Melinda Gebbie, wife of Alan Moore, a comic book artist who was famous for her collaborations with Moore on Tomorrow Stories and Lost Girls. According to her website, "she uses comix storytelling to underline cultural movements which drift like her characters." Also featured are California surrealist painter, Guy Colwell, who became known for his strong portrayal of African-Americans; Henry Sultan, a California artist and "community muralist," who exhibited his "Art of the Mandala" during this run. Sultan's artist statement according to his webpage is, "I was never a hippie, I just looked like one."The festival was the brainchild of artist Michael Bowen, an important San Francisco Renaissance artist and friend to fellow counterculture figures such as Timothy Leary, Janis Joplin, and Wallace Berman. He was the co-founder of the underground newspaper the San Francisco Oracle, and founder and organizer of the Human Be-In. Bowen saw the month long exhibits as a means to display new and established talent side-by-side in a celebration of not only California art, but the international scene: "The First International San Francisco Armory Show offers a viable alternative to this double blind situation, presenting artists whose works are imbued with feeling, color, light and vision, evoking a sense of the unknown, creating possibilities and potentialities of the emergence of the New Man."An attractive collection of images. .
