        World of Allah

1982 - DUNCAN, David Douglas. The World of Allah. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, (1982). Folio, original blue cloth, photographic endpapers, original photographic dust jacket. $750.First edition, this copy with "private edition of the author" notice over the imprint on the title page, with over 200 pages of beautiful black-and-white and color photographs, warmly inscribed by the photographer on the half title to Time-Life editor Ralph Graves on the day of publication, "For Ralph and Eleanor-Super Saludos! From your old colleague, Dave. 7 Sept. 1982, New York."A summation of [Duncan's] travels while serving as Life magazine's correspondent to the Middle East from 1946-56" (Harry Ransom Center). Duncan's images transport viewers throughout the "vast arc of deserts, mountains, jungles and seemingly boundless horizons stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to China and southward through Indonesia and the Philippines" that represented the Islamic world at the close of the 20th century (page 17). "One of his era's most prolific and thoughtful photographers" (McDarrah & McDarrah, 117), Duncan trains his lens on the diversity of modern Islam, offering views both of holy sites and arid expanses, young children and weathered soldiers, veiled women in traditional villages and unveiled women in modern careers. Recipient Graves served Time-Life in many important roles during his career, including that of managing editor.Interior clean and lovely, cloth with minor offsetting to front board, dust jacket with minimal rubbing and slight toning to top edge. A desirable inscribed copy, very nearly fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Don Van Vliet's reflection in taxi mirror (Original artwork)

N.p.: N.p., 1982. Black marker on drawing paper. Inscribed to Gary Lucas' parents at the top left corner: "Murry and Adele Brunch / The Best / Don." Also signed at the bottom right, in the same marker, "Van Vliet / August 82." 13.5 x 10.5 inches, archivally framed and matted. Near Fine. Gary Lucas was the principal guitar player, along with Jeff Moris Tepper, in Captain Beefheart's final configuration of the Magic Band, appearing prominently on Beefheart's last two recordings, "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980) and "Ice Cream for Crow" (1982). Lucas' solo guitar performances of "Flavor Bud Living" and "Evening Bell" on the respective recordings are singular in Beefheart's ouevre. Lucas managed and performed with Beefheart for five years, until Van Vliet retired to Trinidad, California to be a full-time painter in the mid-1980s. During their association, well before he gained notoriety as a painter, Beefheart spontaneously created drawings for Lucas, typically using colored markers, and typically reflecting the situation where the drawing was being made, either literally or on some abstract level. Accompanied by an explanatory letter of provenance from Lucas.
