Autograph musical manuscript full score of the Sonate und Sonatine für Streichquartett, dated October 1981 at conclusion,. 1. Sonate "Brinje." 2. Sonatine "Das reine Gedicht." Complete

[1] (title), 2-59 pp. Folio (304 x 220 mm.). Full dark orange leather with titling and decorative devices stamped in gilt to upper and "Sammlung Dr. Heinz-Georg v. Kamler, Wien" stamped in gilt to lower board. Notated in pencil on 12-stave music manuscript paper. & & With an autograph presentation from the composer to Dr. Heinz-Georg and Michaela von Kamler to title, signed and dated Vienna, November 9, 1981. & & Together with:& Two autograph letters from the composer to the von Kamlers providing a description of the work, a performance of it, and news of the players (suggesting that the von Kamlers may have actually have commissioned the work) and copies of the published score and parts issued by Doblinger in 1990. . Kont studied composition with Lechthaler, Polnauer, Swarowsky and Krips in Vienna and later with Milhaud, Messiaen and Honegger in Paris. The present work was inspired by the folk music Kont heard while serving as a soldier in Croatia in World War II. & & "Progressive pioneer who... startled musically insecure post-war Austria, or a traditionalist who is sometimes labelled a "Conservative"? - More contradictory verdicts have been applied to hardly any other composer in recent Austria's music scene than to Paul Kont. The notion of the "avant-gardist" ha[d] become manifest already in the first years after the war, when Kont - unlike many of his contemporaries - did not so much follow tendencies originating in Hindemith (and, to a lesser degree, in Webern and Schoenberg), but developed a polytonal style deriving from piano improvisation - resulting in the so-called phase of "captured improvisation". The course of his later studies in the years following 1947 resulted in the evolution of the "complex technique", in which... individual parts are treated independently and are joined together in complexes of exclusively metrical and tonal consolidation. His studies of dodecaphony from the year 1951 onwards led to an alternative concept to serialism: the employment of "statistic values". In this technique, it is of paramount importance that the distribution of pitches and other parameters result in a harmonically feasible.. [whole], within the bounds of which free development is possible. Kont's most important innovation is the development of the "third tonality" (also called "new" or "wide" tonality) in the years following 1963..." & & "... In Kont's "third tonality" functional harmony is abolished, and the diatonic and pure-interval voice-leading of the separate parts leads to a sometimes widely branching writing, which, in polyphony, often brings about surreal harmonies. [This]... theory, as formulated in his book, Antianorganikum, finds its most strident application in the Weinheber oratorio, Vom Manne und vom Weibe (" Of Man and of Woman", 1964). Parallel to these innovative concepts, Kont worked - most notably in his Lieder, which were melodically sketched during the war and worked out until 1977 - with a "method of metrical motives", in which motives, melody and form are derived from the metre, verse and stanza of the text. Kont's late work forms an applied synthesis of these various innovations." Christian Heindl, translated by Nicolas Radulescu, in Paul Kont: Music Published by Doblinger, pp. 4-5.& & The von Kammlers were also the dedicatees of Gottfried von Einem's 4th String Quartet, op. 63.

        Music for Chameleons

New York: Signet-New American Library, 1981. . xviii + 265 pages; humorously inscribed and signed on the half-title page by Truman Capote, "For the (underlined) Miss Jones with good wishes from an admirer of beauty and mystery The (underlined) Mr. Capote"; accomplished in Capote's half-printed half-script hand, penned in blue ink; the story behind the commentary is that the young Kaylie Jones, author and daughter of James Jones (of 'From Here to Eternity' fame) was in the famous Hamptons watering hole Bobby Van's and Capote was at the bar - she went up to him, reminded him who she was - and said she was reading (this) his current book - Capote kindly responded with his inscription; additionally ownership-signed by the Kaylie Jones on the front endpaper; inscription not dated, circa early 1980s before Capote's death in 1984, with very good provenance - directly from the recipient; a paperback with some wear and rubbing; darkening of pages, as usual for the paper; in good condition; a nice assocation between the aspiring young author and the experienced and witty Capote. .         THE LIFE WORK OF DARD HUNTER, A PROGRESSIVE ILLUSTRATED ASSEMBLAGE OF HIS WORKS AS ARTIST, CRAFTSMAN, AUTHOR, PAPERMAKER, AND PRINTER

Chillicothe: Mountain House Press. 1981, 1983. folio, full native dyed red Niger sewed on cords, cloth box, leather spine label, both volumes inserted in cloth-covered clam-shell cases with leather spine labels. (viii),198; (viii),130 pages.. 2 volumes. Limited to 150 numbered and signed copies; this is one of the 50 special copies to be bound in full leather and containing extra specimens bound in. Printed on dark cream handmade paper produced by Hodgkinson Mill in Wookey Hole on Dard Hunter's personally watermarked laid moulds. The first volume covers Hunter's early days as a book designer and designer of stain glass windows, pottery, furniture, and his work for the Roycrofters. This volume contains 194 colored and 65 black and white tipped-in illustrations, many of which have been printed to resemble the original. Reproduced in this volume are many of the designs that Hunter produced for the bindings of the Roycroft books and catalogues and also the cover designs for other advertising publications. Volume II describes Hunter's activities as a papermaker and paper historian and contains a bibliography of Hunter's writing. Accompanied by tipped-in specimens of paper, tipped-in facsimiles of title pages and other work. Dard Hunter Jr. has written a two-page note regarding the production of this book, a massive job requiring 12 years. The book was printed by hand on dampened paper printed on Washington hand presses. The paper specimens were made using Dard Hunter's original beater which had to be reconstructed for this project. This surely is one of the landmark books produced in the book-arts field in the 20th century both from a textual and production standpoint.

The Maps and Text of the Boke of Idrography

Oxford,: Roxburghe Club, 1981.. Large folio, with a coloured illustration on the title, 16 double-page coloured plates, and 11 illustrations in the text; original brown half-morocco, top edges gilt; a fine copy. First edition: one of only 200 copies for sale, and long out of print. This was the first publication of the Roxburghe Club to be offered for general sale outside the club's very exclusive membership. This is a magnificent production, reproducing in full colour Rotz's superb atlas of 1542, now in the British Library, with its celebrated charts of the coastlines of the world. Rotz's Boke is the earliest surviving work of Dieppe hydrography to show "the Londe of Java", called by later Dieppe hydrographers "Java-la-Grande", and provides some of the strongest evidence in favour of an early Portuguese discovery of Australia, discussed by Helen Wallis in the Introduction ("Java-la-Grande: the first sight of Australia"). Rotz's life, times and works are also examined in detail and the plates are preceded by a transcription of the Boke.Wallis's approach to the Dieppe maps and specifically to the issue of Java-la-Grande has been challenged, notably by W.A.R. Richardson in Was Australia Charted before 1606? The Jave La Grande Inscriptions (National Library of Australia, 2006). Wallis provides one of the more sober approaches to a topic that has been a flypaper for crackpots (the well-named Trickett, one of many less than scholarly writers who have enthusiastically embraced the notion, even claimed in Beyond Capricorn (Adelaide, 2007) that the Vallard map (see following item) showed Botany Bay so precisely that the Mascot runways could be drawn on it.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 2, The Wilderness Years 1929 - 1935

The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most difficult to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. This is the second of three Volume V Companions and is a near-fine example in a near-fine dust jacket. The red cloth boards and spine are clean and unfaded with bright gilt, square corners, and virtually no wear. The contents are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red-stained top edge is the sole flaw, being faded to pink as is common. There were two prices on the dust jacket flap - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after 1 September 1981. Both prices are intact on this unclipped dust jacket. The dust jacket is crisp, clean, and bright. No fading to the spine lettering. No losses. No wear. There is just a hint of light soiling that is hardly visible - hence our conservative "near-fine" designation instead of "fine". The dust jacket is protected in a removable archival mylar cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage.

Det tavse land. Fotografier af Krass Clement ('The Silent Country. Photographs by Krass Clement').

Copenhagen: Borgen, 1981. Oblonged 4to. Original photoillustrated wrappers. 101 pp. Illustrated throughout in black and white. Near fine with a little wear to cover edges (see picture). Clean copy. Due to the softcover format - the book was only issued like this - it is almost impossible to find completely unharmed, but this one is really well preserved. Please inquire for more pictures of this item.. Very rare first edition of Krass Clement's early masterpiece. One of the most hard to find of Krass Clement photobooks 'The Silent Country' is a very convincing work and among the most important works by this photographer - underrated compared to "Drum" included in Parr & Badger. 'The Silent Country' was Clement's second book; a multifaceted portrait of people in Denmark inspired by Robert Frank's portrait of America. Photos are shot in the 1960's and 1970's , perhaps the most sharply and elegant composed book by Clement. A land mark book in danish photo history. First and only edition

Mountain House Press Chillicothe, Ohio: Mountain House Press, 1981. Nos. 11 (volume I) and 96 (volume II), OF 100 COPIES of the regular edition, SIGNED BY DARD HUNTER II (there were an additional 50 "special edition" copies in a red morocco binding). Hardcover. 445 x 311 mm (17 1/2 x 12 1/4").Two volumes. Compiled by Dard Hunter II. Nos. 11 (volume I) and 96 (volume II), OF 100 COPIES of the regular edition, SIGNED BY DARD HUNTER II (there were an additional 50 "special edition" copies in a red morocco binding). Original quite attractive chestnut brown crushed half morocco over paper boards printed with a Roycroft pattern of pink roses and green leaves, flat spines with gilt titling, leather hinges, edges untrimmed. In the original sturdy linen clamshell boxes with tan morocco labels on spine. Volume I with 194 specimens and 65 black and white illustrations, many of these painstakingly hand-printed to resemble the paper and color from Hunter';s original drawings; Volume II with 25 color and 75 black and white illustrations, 34 paper specimens, and 23 title page reproductions. Prospectus laid in at the front. In mint condition. This impressive two-volume work is the product of 13 years of labor by Dard Hunter II to record his father's extraordinary legacy. The senior Dard Hunter (1883-1966) explored the breadth of book production as few others have: he was an author, papermaker, type designer, graphic artist, and printer. He first experimented with papermaking at a mill in New York in 1909, and later in Ohio, his home state. Of the 18 books he wrote on papermaking technique, the eight he printed at his Mountain House Press, from 1922-50, stand as high points in 20th century American private press books. With the help of his son, he made and set the type for all of these books and printed them by hand on his own paper. He was the leading authority on papermaking, and his research on the subject took him many times around the globe, particularly into Asia, in order to document and collect samples of traditional papermaking techniques. His collection and research became the core of the Dard Hunter Paper museum, which opened in 1939. Equipment used in his papermaking, type founding, and printing has been accepted into the Smithsonian, while his collection of old and exotic papers resides in the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
