Det tavse land. Fotografier af Krass Clement ('The Silent Country. Photographs by Krass Clement').

Copenhagen: Borgen, 1981. Oblonged 4to. Original photoillustrated wrappers. 101 pp. Illustrated throughout in black and white. Near fine copy with only minimal wear to cover, lower right corner mainly. Due to the softcover format - only issued like this - the book is almost impossible to find in such fine condition. The best copy I have seen for long. Inside clean and bright. Please inquire for more pictures of this item.. Very rare first edition of Krass Clement's early masterpiece. One of the most hard to find of Krass Clement photobooks, especially in this fine condition. Krass Clement is still mainly famous for his book 'Drum' (1996) included in Parr & Badger, but most of Clement's oeuvre is equally outstanding. His published work since his début in 1978 ('Skygger af øjeblikke') stands out not only due to the very high quality and the original angle he has towards photography but also because the books were thought and made as 'real photobooks'. They are not just collections of photographs, but works of art in their own right. 'The Silent Country' is a very convincing work and among the most important works by this photographer - and more rare than most of his books - underrated compared to "Drum" included in Parr & Badger. 'The Silent Country' was Clement's second book; a multifaceted portrait of people in Denmark inspired by Robert Frank's portrait of America. Photos are shot in the 1960's and 1970's , perhaps the most sharply and elegant composed book by Clement. A land mark book in danish photo history. First and only edition

        Philosophical Explanations.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1981. Royal 8vo. Orig. full grey cloth w. white lettering to spine. Orig. black, red and white dust-jacket, not price-clipped. A few small tears to capitals and corners of dust-jacket w. very minor loss. Binding and internally near mint. XII, (2), 764, (1) pp.. First edition, presentation copy from the author "For Iz/ Fondly,/ Bob", dated "August, 1981", of this highly important work of modern day philosophy. This is Nozick's second book, and it constitutes his most influential contribution to philosophy outside of political theory. In this work Nozick develops his "externalist" theory of knowledge. The work covers many aspects of metaphysics and ethics, but especially the metaphysics of personal identity occupies a central role in this main work, which comes second in importance to only his seminal "Anarchy, State and Utopia" (1974). Robert Nozick (1938 -2002) was an American philosopher, born in Brooklyn, and Pellegrino University Professor at Harvard University. He was a thinker with wide-ranging interests, and he is now considered one of the most important and influential political philosophers of the Anglo-American analytic tradition, together with John Rawls. In his Philosophical Explanations, which received the Phi Beta Kappa Society's Waldo Emerson Award, Nozick brings forth the now so famous, but then novel and (still) controversial accounts of knowledge, free will, personal identity and meaning of life. The "Philosophical Explanations" is thus a groundbreaking work in several ways:According to traditional theories of knowledge, a knower S knows a proposition p if and only if S believes p, p is true, and S is justified in believing p. The problem with the three instances here is the last, namely what does "being justified in believing" entail? Nozick here comes up with a unique contribution that has been of great importance to epistemologists ever since: He determines this belief negatively. It is the counterfactuals that make the true belief count as knowledge, i.e. 1) S would not believe p, if p were not true (the "variation" condition), and 2) under different circumstances, S would still believe and would not believe the negation of p (the "adherence" condition). Nozick determines a belief that fulfills these conditions as one that "tracks the truth". Furthermore, Nozick uses his analysis in answering skepticism, and controversially denies the "closure principle" (if S knows that p and that p entails q, then S knows that q), bringing him great (and not necessarily positive) fame among epsitemologists. Thus Nozick here presents an epistemological system designed to deal with Gettier-style problems as well as those posed by skepticism, and his argument became highly influential. Furthermore, in "Philosophical Explanations", Nozick also presents his "closest continuer" theory, his seminal contribution to the debate of personal identity. The question of personal identity has a long tradition among philosophers and can stem from puzzles like: If person A wakes up in the body of person B, who is he? Is he A, or is he B? Nozick comes up with an answer to such questions, namely that it is the later person who "most closely continues" the earlier one who is the one truly identical to the latter. Of course, this leaves room for interpretation, and so in Nozick's view, personal identity comes to partly depend upon the factors that are most important to the answerer, e.g. bodily or psychological properties.Apart from the groundbreaking ideas presented in this work, it is also famous for posing numerous questions, the answers to which are often left to the reader, for using non-philosophical works to illustrate philosophical points, and not least for the curious style, in which it is written."This book puts forward its explanations in a very tentative spirit; not only do I not ask you to believe they are correct, I do not think it important for me to believe them correct, either. Still, I do believe, and hope you will find it so, that these proposed explanations are illuminating and worth considering, that they are worth surpassing; also, that the process of seeking and elaborating explanations, being open to new possibilities, the new wonderings and wanderings, the free exploration, is itself a delight. Can any pleasure compare to that of a new idea, a new question? There is sexual experience, of course, not dissimilar, with its own playfulness and possibilities, its focused freedom, its depth, its sharp pleasures and its gentle ones, its ecstacies. What is the mind's excitement and sensuality? What its orgasm? Whatever, it unfortunately will frighten and offend the puritans of the mind (do the two puritanisms share a common root?) even as it expands others and brings them joy." (Nozick, Introduction, p. 24)."Iz" in the presentation is the famous philosopher of education, Israel Scheffler, Professor Emeritus of Education and Philosophy at Harvard University. He is a founding member of The National Academy of Education and author of "Four Pragmatists", "In Praise of the Cognitive Emotions", "Symbolic Worlds" and other works in philosophy as well as of a memoir on his early Jewish education, "Teachers of My Youth"

        FAMOUS LAST WORDS

Toronto: Viking, 1981 Findley, Timothy. FAMOUS LAST WORDS. Toronto: Viking. First Edition. A very good or better copy in dustwrapper. 8vo., 396pp. Extraordinary Family Copy signed on the title page & inscribed by Findley to his father" For Father with much love / Tiff". His father has decorated the front pastedown with a coloured portrait of Queen Mary & has added a full page commentary about the novel on the front fly: "...Tiff has written one of the greatest pyrotechnic displays ever seen against the twilit skies of English literature... / Dad". A wonderful copy of this very highly regarded novel which explores the difference between truth & lies, fact & fictions. $7500.00  "Like its 1977 predecessor The Wars, Timothy Findley's 1981 Famous Last Words ruthlessly examines the (often violent) nature of social division and union, as well as the making of history. Together these two novels mark the peak of Findley's career. While the slim Wars focuses largely on a single Canadian soldier in the First World War, Famous Last Words observes the next war--sometimes in the wings, sometimes from a distant office--through expatriate American writer Hugh Selwyn Mauberley. The title character in a well-known poem by the infamous Ezra Pound ("born / In a half savage country-- / Bent resolutely on wringing lilies from the acorn"), Mauberley gives Findley a focus point for his forceful moral questions. Can bad people produce good art? (Good anything?) Are actions really excused by explanations? - Darryl Whetter. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

First Edition; First Printing. 8vo., 432pp. A fine copy in like dustwrapper. An excellent TLS tipped to the front free endpaper. [Anais Nin] Rupert Pole. TLS to Henry Miller, Oct 23rd 1979 8vo., on their printed letterhead with monogram. Signed "Rupert". Great content about Vol 7 of the diaries which is approaching a major deadline requiring miller to review the part related to himself & to give his OK, etc. Nice letter. There is a photo [not included] of Anais Nin & Rupert Pole, holding their poodle, Piccola, at their home in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. Mr. Pole, who erroneously believed Nin was divorced when their relationship began, hoped the house would help entice Nin to stay instead of returning to her other husband. (1963 Photo By Christian Dubois Larsen Via Los Angeles Times). Rupert Pole, the husband of Anais Nin was guardian of the diarist's erotic literary legacy. For many years, Nin was married at the same time to Mr. Pole & to a banker in New York, Hugh "Hugo" Guiler. She & Mr. Pole divorced but continued to live together until her death in 1977. After her death, Mr. Pole oversaw the publication of four unabridged volumes of her erotic journals, which detail her affairs with such men as Henry Miller, psychoanalyst Otto Rank and her own father, Spanish composer Joaquin Nin. Seven previous volumes, which had been purged of much of the salacious material - as well as most references to her husbands - had established Nin as a cult figure, revered by many in the women's movement for her embrace of sexual freedom & exploration of the female psyche. The uncensored diaries overseen by Mr. Pole introduced Nin's work to a broader audience. Provenance: The Henry Miller Archive.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

        Pastel drawing of Peter Pan

1981. An original drawing of Peter Pan, in pencil and pastel on gray paper. Together with a manuscript poem written by Gould upon completion of the work. The drawing shows the face of Peter Pan gazing through a thicket of leaves and branches. His “ageless” eyes, as Gould describes them in his poem, are two slightly different earthy shades, hazel-brown and green, which give him an otherworldly appearance. The leaves are delicately colored with yellow pastel and highlighted with white. The color and texture of Peter’s hair echoes that of the branches; he is truly part of nature. In the accompanying poem, Gould writes in Peter’s voice: “At the wood’s heart you will find me, / In each leaf and blade, / Beneath each rock and loam, / In shadows I wait.” Signed in the bottom-left corner with Gould’s initials. The drawing was commissioned by Anne Bromer when Gould was an emerging Massachusetts-based artist. Gould began his career as a fantasy artist, book designer, and illustrator, and his work has appeared on the covers of many popular fantasy series. In 1991, he left the field of book design to work in the film industry. The drawing measures approximately 16 1/4 by 12 inches, in a wooden frame measuring 19 1/2 by 15 3/4 inches. Later reproduced as a limited-edition poster.

Andy Warhol - Philippe. Photographies Originales

S.l.: Par l'auteur, 1981.

Esemplare perfetto.

Satan in Goray ... With a new introductory essay by the author The Making of a First Book

New York: Sweetwater Editions, 1981. 4to. (11 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches). Frontispiece and illustrations after Moskowitz, 10 etched plates by Moskowitz, each signed in pencil by the artist. Purple morocco, the upper cover and spine tooled in gilt. Limited edition of 475 copies, this copy out-of-series and un-numbered, with the limitation leaf signed by the author and artist, and all the etchings signed by the artist. "For this edition ... the author has made certain revisions in the English language text. He also wrote a new, introductory essay ... Ira Moskowitz has created ten original copperplate etchings and forty drawings for the text. The etchings have been pulled at the Emiliano Sorini studio, New York, on Arches paper. The text and the drawings have been printed by the Meridien Gravure Company, Meridien, Connencticut on Linweave text" (limitation leaf). "I. B. Singer's first novel was Satan in Goray which he first published in installments in a literary magazine, Globus, which he had founded with his life-long friend, the Yiddish poet Aaron Zeitlin in 1935. It tells the story of the events in the village of Goraj (close to Bilgoraj), after the terrible catastrophe of 1648, where the Jews of Poland lost a third of their population in a cruel uprising by Cossacks and the effects of the seventeenth century faraway false messiah Shabbatai Zvi on the local population. Its last chapter is written in the style imitative of medieval Yiddish chronicle. In its stark depiction of innocence crushed by circumstance it appears like a foreboding of the coming danger."
