FAREWELL ADDRESS OF PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER. JANUARY 14, 1981

[Winston-Salem, NC]: Palaemon Press Limited, (December 1981). First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in slipcase with printed paper label and quite scarce. Bound in full blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Prints Carter's 9-page farewell address on heavy paper. One of 300 copies printed and SIGNED in full by the former President as "Jimmy Carter" on the title page. Half of the edition was reserved for Carter; the other half was issued for sale by the publisher. This copy is numbered 76 in ink on the colophon page, certainly a desireable number as Carter was elected in 1976. One of the most difficult Carter titles to find and a poorly made book. Of the half dozen copies we have examined over the years, all were loosely stitched in their casings causing the text block to slide up and down. This copy is no different, but is only the third copy we have seen with a slipcase.

PHOTOS IN + OUT CITY LIMITS: BOSTON ("PHOTOS IN & OUT CITY LIMITS: BOSTON")

Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 70 pages. Collection of photographs on subject. The first of a planned series on American cities, the project ended with a companion volume on New York City. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Robert Rauschenberg: Oversize-volume format. White softcovers with metallic-silver titles beautifully embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Rauschenberg. Essay by Clifford Ackley. Matching white hard board slipcase. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the great artist's collection of black-and-white photographs on Boston, the partial fulfillment of his 30-year-old wish to photograph the entire United States, a project he never completed. Showcases his unique approach to photography as a process of discovery, selection, and assemblage of objects from everyday life. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. He makes no distinction between his photography and his painting, and he brings the same acute eye to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are formally rigorous, sensuous, and piercing. His celebrated method of appropriating found images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten) . "A protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art. Rauschenberg didn't give a fig for consistency or curating his reputation; his taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a big-ness of soul and a richness of temperament that recalled Walt Whitman" (Robert Hughes) . "Mine is the need to be where it will always never be the same again. Photography is the most direct communication of non-violent contacts" (Robert Rauschenberg) . A "must-have" title for Robert Rauschenberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil by Robert Rauschenberg. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of few signed copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Many copies have major flaws because the color white soils very easily. According to dealers who knew him, Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and very few. A rare signed copy thus. 45 tritone plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Roadkills. Etching and 11 Woodengravings by Alan James Robinson

Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae. 1981. Unique copy of this signed, limited edition, bound by Donald Glaister, one of 250 copies from a total edition of 300, all on handmade Japanese paper: 250 regular edition, 50 deluxe edition with an extra suite (deluxe edition long out-of-print). Page size: 9 inches x 12 inches; 42pp. In addition, this copy has been signed by all the authors although not called for in the colophon (the deluxe with the extra suite were to have all the authors' signatures).& Bound by Donald Glaister: green morocco with onlays of painted Mylar, aluminum, sanded, painted and unpainted, red morocco; design extending across front and back panel, entirely recessed within half-inch rule extending around outer edges of binding; another recessed panel occurs another 3-1/2 inches in from the border on either side and 1- 1/4 inches down from top of border, with onlays of laminated Mylar, as well as red morocco that is almost a "roadkill" over which extend Mylar cutouts. These onlays are raised and the holes allow the images below to be viewed below. Endpapers of green painted cork; top edge graphite; housed in custom-made cloth clamshell box with printed gray label on spine, fine. An extraordinary binding from the great binder, Donald Glaister. In the artist's statement, Mr. Glaister tells us, "The composition of the binding addresses the other participant in the making of a roadkill: motor vehicles. The binding represents fragments of cars and trucks seemingly randomly thrown about the covers of the book. Over the top of these layers of junk lie pieces of cargo netting such as can be found across the beds of pick-up trucks. All of these pieces of unnatural detritus are scattered over a field of organic shapes that include a black abstract bird wing shape that extends across the panels. The bird wing is intact. Hooray for the good guys." & Not exactly a pierced-screen binding, but certainly one which is as innovative as the first pierced screen was, this binding has several layers to it, raised and recessed, and not simply for effect because the binder is capable of executing such elegant, difficult work. Rather, the binding's surfaces and intent capture the intent of the book, allowing the viewer / reader to have another aesthetic experience while considering the subject, unfortunately all too common, that has provoked this collection of remarkable prose and poetry and never- undignified images of the sad results of human interaction with the natural world.& The text is a collection of prose and poetry by John McPhee, Gillian Conoley, Gary Snyder, Madeline DeFrees, William Stafford, and Richard Eberhart. The illustrations include an etching and 11 wood engravings by Robinson. The text is handset in 18pt. Arrighi and Centaur letterpress. Certainly one of the best books of Alan James Robinson's Cheloniidae Press, this is a particularly desirable copy.
See an Image.
Roadkills. A Collection of Prose and Poetry. Illustrated by Alan James Robinson. Texts by John McPhee, Gillian Connelly, Gary Snyder, Madeline DeFrees, William Stafford and Richard Eberhart

Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press. 1981. First Edition, one of 50 Deluxe copies, from a total issue of 300: 50 Deluxe copies bound in quarter leather, with text printed on Sakomoto and the prints on Cha-u-ke plus an extra suite of the prints, signed by the artist and all of the authors; 250 regular copies with text on Mulberry paper, bound in paper, signed by the artist. Page size: 12 inches x 8 3/4 inches. Bound by Gray Parrot: quarter grey morocco with tire tracks blind tooled across spine and title in blind, matching black chemise with blind tooled tire tracks, all housed in grey morocco and black cloth clamshell box. Illustrated with 11 woodengravings (10 roadkills and one tire track/broken muffler as colophon) and one etching, the text was printed in red and black by Harold Patrick McGrath at Hampshire Typothetae in Bruce Rogers' Centaur and Frederick Warde's Arrighi which was hand set in 18 point by P. Chase Twichell. The artist explains in "On the Conception of Roadkills" that he had originally planned a portfolio without text of some of those animals he had encountered during his many drives to and from college. He adds, "Meanwhile, friends began to call my attention to writers who had also been inspired by the casualties of the highways: John McPhee, in Travels in Georgia, and poets Madeline DeFrees, Gillian Connelly, Gary Snyder, William Stafford, and Richard Eberhart. Thus I began to conceive of Roadkills as a book, with images and text interwoven." And what a book it is -- the text in red and black on tan Japanese paper, the black woodengravings on a darker tan paper, red Japanese paper as preliminaries -- all making a powerful statement about "The Dead by the Side of the Road." This is the very rare second book of the press; the deluxe edition with its extra suite and signatures of all the authors has long been out of print. In addition, this copy is inscribed to noted collectors Mimi and Arnold Elkind and signed by the printer and binder as well. Also included are an initial prospectus, bios of authors, and a handwritten letter by the artist/publisher conveying the book. Is this the best book of the Press? Perhaps -- it certainly is one of the top three!
See an Image.
Analogies of Light [Signed by Elytis and by Ivar Ivask, Editor and Contributor] Critical Studies on the Nobel Prize Winner

Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1981. First edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/very good. A Very Good or better copy of the first edition in book form, first printing (rubbing to bottom edge of boards, otherwise Fine -- complete with the Publisher's compliments card loosely laid in), in a Very Good dust jacket (modest edge wear, small chip to spine head, surface wear to exterior of rear flap fold), SIGNED BY ODYSSEUS ELYTIS beneath his reproduced photograph on the page facing the title page and SIGNED BY IVAR IVASK, Editor, on the title page; an ideal introduction of the reader to Elytis and his works consisting of a Preface, the portion of an interview by Ivask of Elytis related to Elytis's poetry, a short anthology of Elytis's poetry along with selections from his works "Open Book" and "Book of Signs", critical comments from experts in the field including, among them Lawrence Durrell writing on Elytis's poetry, a chronology, a selected bibliography, and numerous illustrations including reproduced photographs. Odysseus Elytis (the pen name of Odysseus Alepoudhiéis) published his first poem in 1935 at the encouragement of, among others, his friend George Seferis, winner of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature, was soon thereafter was praised as an important writer, and ultimately won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his poetry, which, against the background of Greek tradition, depicts with sensuous strength and intellectual clear-sightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness". Signed copies of his works are quite scarce to the market, and signed copies of his trade editions, especially in English translation, are scarcer still. (Auction records reveal only 2 signed copies of his work having come to auction in the last 25 years, each a Limited Edition. Furthermore, in our experience, copies of his works in English translation signed by him in Greek are scarcer than are those signed by him in English characters and those tend to be signed using only his last name, altogether making this quite a scarce copy.) Altogether a Very Good or better copy, SIGNED BY ODYSSEUS ELYTIS. SCARCE/RARE.

        THESE TREES STAND

New York: Carol Joyce, 1981. ONE OF TWO ARTIST'S PROOFS SIGNED BY THE POET AND PHOTOGRAPHER (of a total of 12 copies, 10 of them for sale). Hardcover. One of Two Artist's Proofs, in aMemorable Arborial Binding. 238 x 286 mm (9 3/8 x 11 1/4"). 15 French-fold leaves. ONE OF TWO ARTIST'S PROOFS SIGNED BY THE POET AND PHOTOGRAPHER (of a total of 12 copies, 10 of them for sale). MEMORABLE ORIGINAL PICTORIAL MAROON MOROCCO, WITH MOLDED INLAYS AND GILT HIGHLIGHTS, BY CAROL JOYCE, the binding featuring a molded cream-colored inlaid calf tree, its trunk occupying almost all of the flat spine, its bare limbs spread across both covers, with twinkling gilt stars visible between its branches, trunk dividing in two at the head of the spine, with the author's name in gilt appearing in the fork. In the original matching burgundy cloth clamshell box with morocco spine label. With 12 black and white photographs of the poet by Robert Mahon. In virtually mint condition. Having been printed on very thick, damp paper at the Tideline Press, the text here is deeply impressed and set off by vast margins; the black and white photographs provide a whimsical accompaniment to the text; and the verse itself is obviously of interest as the work of a celebrated poet. But it is the binding that stands out as the chief accomplishment in this successful book arts collaboration between poet William DeWitt Snodgrass (1926-2009), photographer Robert Mahon, binder Carol Joyce, and printer Leonard Seastone. Joyce and Seastone were involved with the Center for Book Arts in Manhattan, and a copy of our work was included in the New York Public Library's 1984 exhibition, "Center for Book Arts: The First Decade." The poem, originally published in Snodgrass' Pulitzer Prize-winning debut collection, lightly mocks the poet's narcissism, while stating the vision of his poetic journey in the refrain, "Snodgrass is walking through the universe." That declaration was the inspiration for Mahon's series of portraits for this work, which begin with a shot of Snodgrass just visible in the distance on the far left side of the photograph and end with a close shot of the poet's sleeve at the far right side of the shot, as he disappears out of the camera's range. Dubbed by critics the "Father of Confessional Poetry"--a label he despised--Snodgrass received his master's degree from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Robert Lowell. He went on to teach poetry at Cornell, Rochester, and Syracuse, numbering among his students the young Anne Sexton. Joyce, who received a degree in art history and studied restoration and bookbinding in Italy, specializes in unique bindings for small press books. Her design for the binding here derives from the poem's opening lines: "These trees stand very tall under the heavens. / While they stand, if I walk, all stars traverse / This steep celestial gulf their branches chart." The stark limbs against the wine-colored background might look foreboding, if not for the tiny gold stars sprinkled playfully between the branches. Snodgrass himself was quite pleased with the work, describing the binding as "exquisite" in an interview for "Contemporary Authors.".

UK: Jonathan Cape. London, Jonathan Cape, 1981. First edition and First impression (first issue with American rough-cut leaves). Signed by Rushdie. The book is very good with a little light staining to the spine and a neat two line inscription to the ffep. Wrapper is near fine with some wear to the corners. To Bird With Love

Poitiers, France,: Wizlov, 1981. First Edition, large folio, (15" X 10.5"), beautifully produced, the scarce and definitive graphic study of Charlie Parker, which relies extensively on photographs, posters, contracts, previously unpublished personal correspondence and other ephemera, from the collections of co-authors Francis Paudras and Chan Parker, Bird's widow. The book is generally considered to have been published in a single edition of 1000 copies, but several Parker experts have suggested that the likely publication run was about half that number. Minimal text in English, translated into French by Paudras, a gifted graphic artist who designed the book and the illustrated two-piece 'parcel' presentation box in which the book is housed. Protected by an additional, original, two-piece, corrugated card mailer, this is by far the finest copy we have seen. Fine, tight, unmarked, the book appears unread, in maroon laminated boards, with white printed label to the top cover, in the scarce, pictorial card presentation box, which simulates a package addressed to Bird. Notoriously fragile, the box is fine, with solid, unbroken corners, the pictorial laminate is bright, crisp and unmarked, without loss or peeling. A high spot of jazz literature, in collector's condition. Photos availabel on request. In 1986 Paudras also produced a very handsome book on Bud Powell, La Danse des Infidels, which drew heavily on his close personal relationship with the great pianist, to whom he was extraordinarily devoted, and for whom he acted as de facto guardian and unofficial manager during Powell's troubled stay in Paris during the late 50's, and early 60's. J1656. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/None, as Issued. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Selected Poems [Signed by Elytis, by Keeley, and by Philip Sherrard] Chosen and Introduced by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard

London: Anvil Press Poetry Ltd., 1981. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Near Fine copy of the first UK edition, first printing, in a Very Good + or better dust jacket , SIGNED BY ODYSSEUS ELYTIS on the title page (using the Greek form of his name rather than being merely signed "Elytis" as is the case in all but one of the other few signed copies of this book that we have seen). Odysseus Elytis (the pen name of Odysseus Alepoudhiéis) published his first poem at the encouragement of, among others, his friend George Seferis, winner of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature, was soon thereafter himself praised as an important writer, and ultimately he too won the (1979) Nobel Prize in Literature "for his poetry, which, against the background of Greek tradition, depicts with sensuous strength and intellectual clear-sightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness". The Poems contained in this Volume were chosen by Edmund Keeley and Phillip Sherrard, the leading translators of modern Greek Poetry, who also provided the book's Introduction. Not only is this copy signed by Odysseus Elytis, but it also is SIGNED BY EDMUND KEELEY on the page immediately preceding the title page and is on the same page SIGNED BY PHILIP SHERRARD with his inscription to the famed actor Douglas Fairbanks from whose Estate this book comes and whose bookplate resides on the front pastedown. Signed copies of Odysseus Elytis' works are quite scarce to the market, and signed copies of his trade editions, especially in English translation, are scarcer still. (Auction records reveal only 2 signed copies of his work having come to auction in the last 25 years, each a Limited Edition.) A Near Fine copy, SIGNED BY ODYSSEUS ELYTIS, also SIGNED BY EDMUND KEELEY, and further SIGNED and INSCRIBED BY PHILIP SHERRARD TO DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS; QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR A COLLECTOR TO HAVE. A remarkable copy. SCARCE/RARE.

        Photo-theater: Tokyo Elegy

Tokyo: Tojusha, (1981). Tiny indentation at the spine from having been involved in a bit of book bondage at the Tokyo book market, else fine in black wrappers with French flaps, fine white pictorial dust jacket (itself with a small indentation), and scarce black obi.. First Edition. Small square quarto. Many images in sequence, mostly black and white and shot between 1967-1972, with several iconic photographs interspersed among those previously unpublished. The juxtaposition of a highly charged erotic series followed by somber shots of Araki's father's funereal is indicative not only of Araki's artistic prowess, but also of the inherent risk taking that infuses the best of the Japanese photobooks. True to form, the book has a brilliant layout, design, and a subtly provocative dust jacket. Only one copy in OCLC. (Book of Nudes 188-189, obi not present.).
