Satan in Goray With a new introductory essay by the author The Making of a First Book

New York: Sweetwater Editions, 1981. 4to. (11 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches). Frontispiece and illustrations after Moskowitz, 10 etched plates by Moskowitz, each signed in pencil by the artist. Full purple morocco, the upper cover and spine tooled in gilt Limited edition of 475 copies, this copy out-of-series and un-numbered, with the limitation leaf signed by the author and artist, and all the etchings signed by the artist. "For this edition ... the author has made certain revisions in the English language text. He also wrote a new, introductory essay ... Ira Moskowitz has created ten original copperplate etchings and forty drawings for the text. The etchings have been pulled at the Emiliano Sorini studio, New York, on Arches paper. The text and the drawings have been printed by the Meridien Gravure Company, Meridien, Connencticut on Linweave text" (limitation leaf). I. B. Singer's first novel was Satan in Goray which he first published in installments in a literary magazine, Globus , which he had founded with his life-long friend, the Yiddish poet Aaron Zeitlin in 1935. It tells the story of the events in the village of Goraj (close to Bilgoraj), after the terrible catastrophe of 1648, where the Jews of Poland lost a third of their population in a cruel uprising by Cossacks and the effects of the seventeenth century faraway false messiah Shabbatai Zvi on the local population. Its last chapter is written in the style imitative of medieval Yiddish chronicle. In its stark depiction of innocence crushed by circumstance it appears like a foreboding of the coming danger.

Commencement. Kent State University, December 18, 1981

Kent State University, Kent, Ohio 1981 - First edition. Octavo. 42pp. Stapled illustrated wrappers. Slight age-toning on the wrappers, one pencil note in text, else very near fine. Commencement program that hides a literary hoax. On page 25, which lists the graduates from the University from the College of Arts and Sciences, the first listed of the six graduates in Geography is Nelson Springer Angstrom, the son of Rabbit Angstrom, both of whom existed only in the fertile mind of John Updike, who sent Nelson to Kent State in the third Rabbit book, *Rabbit is Rich* (1981). Updike corresponded with the assistant to the President of Kent State in order to gather details of the school for the book; the same employee was responsible for the University print shop, and awarded Nelson a degree. Copy of a clipping detailing the hoax is laid in. Presumably missing from most Updike collections. *OCLC* locates a single run of Kent State commencement programs, but the run seems to lack any issues after 1963.         The Thing (Original screenplay for the 1982 film, special effects designer's copy)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1981. Second draft screenplay for the 1982 film. Based on John W. Campbell's 1938 novella "Who Goes There?" Working copy belonging to uncredited special effects designer Jack Rush, with many highlighted passages throughout the script relating to the film's now-legendary horrific effects, including yellow ooze, black blood, human heads emerging from dogs' bodies, etc. Rush is the longtime editor of "Jack Rush: Media-Thriller Blog," where he keeps track of details in the ever-expanding field of special effects. A parasitic extraterrestrial lands on Earth, taking on the forms of its prey and slowly assimilating the members of an American Antarctic outpost until the outpost itself is destroyed. Shot over the course of three months on both artificially frozen sound stages in Los Angeles and on location in Alaska and British Columbia. Though the film is now considered a cult horror classic, "The Thing" struggled at the box office, opening on the heels of both "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner." Gray studio wrappers, noted as SECOND DRAFT SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, marked production No. 00477, dated March 4, 1981. Title page present, dated March 4, 1981, noted as Second Draft Screenplay, with credits for screenwriter Lancaster, director Carpenter, producers Foster, Turman, Cohen, and Stark, and novella writer Campbell, seen here under his pseudonym Don A.         [Flyers]: Dirken - Miller Production concert flyers for the local Bay Area punk scene. NO: 166,176,180,181,182,184,189

Los Angeles, California. 1981-1982. A collection of 10 Dirksen -- Miller Production flyers (numbers 166, 176, 180, 181, 182, 184, and 189). The flyers promoting Los Angeles punk venues and bands from 1981 and 1982 featuring acts such as T.S.O.L., Minimal Man, Flipper, MX 80 Sound, Wolvarines, and the Dickheads. The flyers are all printed on various colored paper sheets sized, 14" x 8.5" in black ink. Near fine with light wear and toning except one flyer with the top left corner ripped. Dirksen -- Miller Productions was created in the 1980s by Dirk Dirksen. Dirksen was a music promoter for the Mabuhay Gardens and On Broadway, two notable punk rock venues, in the late 1970s to 1980s. It was because of this that Dirksen was dubbed the name the "Pope of Punk". Originally from Germany, Dirksen moved to United States in 1948 and began booking bands in the 1970s. He wrote and directed the Amapola Presents Show, which featured local bay area artists on KEMO-TV weekly. On the back on the flyers, record store locations, top hit charts, radio station shows, and radio playlists are printed with "New Wave Rotten Record Chart" at the top. The front of the flyers depict black and white pictures of the bands with show dates and locations. Several of these bands were seminal in the beginnings of punk rock that exploded in Los Angeles. Flipper, being one of the most popular bands during this time, formed in San Francisco in 1979. Their slowed-down sound influenced many punk bands but also infuriated punkers in the scene, making the band only more notorious. Flipper has been noted as the forerunner to sludge metal and both Kurt Cobain from Nirvana and Eric Avery from Jane's Addiction have cited Flipper as one of their influences. When Henry Rollins of Black Flag described Flipper he said, "They were just heavy. Heavier than you. Heavier than anything... When they played they were amazing." T.S.O.L. was another influential band, which had formed in 1978 in Long Beach. Associated with hardcore-punk, the band brought a fast-paced, poppy sound to the punk scene which was favored over Flippers slow sound. T.S.O.L. became hugely popular on the local scene but because of constant changing sounds and appearance the band never found its success globally. The Mabuhay Gardens (The Mab) and On Broadway were two of the most popular punk venues in Los Angeles during this time. Combined with Dirksen and his abrasive personality as the emcee for both venues, punk bands local and traveling made it a point to stop and play at these venues for their Bay Area punk scene. On Broadway was the top level of the entire building while The Mab was the basement area, however the venues were separate featuring different acts and styles. The Mab and On Broadway closed in 1986 but has been bought and re-opened several times and different clubs for the changing scenes. A fascinating collection of Bay Area punk flyers showing the popular local bands and punk related stores, radio stations, and venues. .

Buddy Buddy (Original screenplay for the 1981 film)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1981. Shooting Script for the 1981 film, director Wilder's final work. Laid in is a vintage black-and-white studio still photograph featuring Jack Lemmon and Paula Prentiss. Based on a play by French playwright Francis Veber, and on the 1973 French-Italian film, "L'emmerdeur." A professional killer going by the name of Trabucco (Matthau) on his way to "take care of" a gangster, bumps into a forlorn man named Victor Clooney (Lemmon). Clooney's wife has left him for the head of a sex clinic, Dr. Zuckerbrot (Kinski). Trabucco sets up his rifle in a hotel room, ready to make the hit, but is interrupted by Clooney trying to hang himself in the adjoining room. Trabucco briefly stops Clooney from hanging, but he gets away and climbs onto the ledge of the hotel window. When Victor finds out that his wife is filing for divorce, he again attempts suicide, the doctor and his wife following. They try to stop Victor with a sedative but stick Trabucco with the needle instead. The two men are left hopeless but Victor promises to help Trabucco with his hit.
