AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED (ALS) to Gahan Wilson, dated 5 November 1980, two pages on two sheets of letter-sized bond

Old fold creases, a bit of irregular tanning (due to offsetting or. sunning, probably) to one edge, very good. (#140957). Written with a red felt-tip marker in a cursive/printing hybrid (due to his typewriter being "sick. Took it to the vet and am still waiting reports on the surgery: I know its platen was removed and I'm afraid it also had a miscarriage.") The letter is prime Bloch, displaying his impish sense of humor in every paragraph. He regrets that Wilson was unable to get to the 1980 World Fantasy Convention (held in Baltimore) at which Bloch was Master of Ceremonies. "I'd not met Jack Vance [the Guest of Honor] before -- a very nice guy -- plays the banjo and kazoo simultaneously and knows all the obscure songs of the 'Twenties, including one of my favorites, 'Lena Was the Queen of Palesteena.'" Concludes with some chafing of Wilson on the news that he is writing a novel. "I don't draw on lavatory walls, you know. Shouldn't we have some kind of detente?" Amusing and affectionate in equal proportion.

        I Want to Take Picture

Nexus Press Atlanta: Nexus Press. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of one of the seminal photobooks of the 1980's. SIGNED BY BURKE INSIDE ORIGINAL DRAWING OF HIS HAND. One of only 1000 copies printed of the first edition. "Bill Burke has become known for his large-format portraits shot on Polaroid Land film, which have the formality and feel of nineteenth-century photographs whilst remaining acutely modern in their sensibilities. In his best book, I Want to Take Picture, this technique is entirely appropriate, since it records his personal pilgrimage to southeast Asia, duplicating the enterprise of the old colonialist photographers but adding a contemporary twist..."Although the pictures have a nineteenth-century feel, the book is also a diary that records a twentieth-century experience. Burke not only uses his photographs, but also employs documents- reproductions of ephemera like money and bus tickets- and collages them with handwritten captions. The result is a kaleidoscopic impression of his journeys, taking the book out of the documentary realm and into that of the personal road trip. However, this particular sojourn does not merely connate the search for self that occupies so much of late twentieth-century American photography. It also represents a moving attempt to come to terms with some of the events that haunted his generation" (Parr/Badger, The Photobook). Roth 101.Atlanta: Nexus Press, 1987. Folio, photo-pictorial boards. A fine copy. Rare signed.

S.T.E. Lawrence. Boxwood blockmaker. Wood engravings collected in honour of his eightieth birthday

Wakefield: Simon Lawrence - printed at the Whittington Press. F. 1980. Limited Edition. Quarter brown buckram over marbled boards with gilt titles on spine, 16pp + 37 full page wood engravings printed on rectos only and with a wood engraved frontis by Leo Wyatt and an appreciation written by George Mackley, internally clean and bright, a fine copy in a slipcase which is bumped on a couple of corners. , Stanley Lawrence worked in the family business, which made woodblocks for wood engravers, from 1917 until 1986. He became the sole proprietor in 1941 and was an acknowledged expert on wood engraving materials and handmade papers. This book was conceived in 1979, when Stanley Lawrence's grandson, Simon, asked John Randle at the Whittington Press to print, in secrecy, a book of wood engravings by leading engravers to celebrate his grandfather's 80th birthday. The list of engravers who contributed their work is impressive and includes Simon Brett, Joan Hassall, Agnes Miller Parker, George Mackley and Reynolds Stone, to name just a few. A more significant consequence of the book was Simon Lawrence's decision to set up the Fleece Press, a decision that he associates with moment he first walked through the door at the Whittington Press. , tall 8vo 9" - 10" tall, Unpaginated pp .

        Firestarter signed limited edition

Huntington Woods, MI: Phantasia Press. F/F. 1980. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 10, 20, 24. 0932096050 . 1st edition/1st printing. This is # 311 of 725 only of these signed limited edition in dustjacket and slipcase copies, Signed and dated: 'Stephen King, July 6, 1980' (the 2nd of the 4 days that it took King to sign these limited editions). Firestarter was Stephen King's first signed limited edition and this signed limited edition predates the 1st trade edition by 3 months (not issued by Viking till the end of September, 1980). Though this limited edition is beautifully constructed, it was not as well protected as many of his later signed limited editions, being housed in an open sided slipcase and also having a dustjacket which many times got considerable wear from sliding in and out of the slipcase. Consequently, few have survived in excellent condition. The book is bound in dark blue leather boards with gilt printing and this one is fine: straight, clean and tight with no damage or soiling, and no handwriting other than the author's on the limitation page at the back of the text. The dustjacket is also fine: price intact ($35.00), clean, crisp and bright with Whelan's famous artwork in unfaded condition and with no damage or wear. It has been protected by a removable, clear mylar cover. The leather-textu red paper-covered boards slipcase is also in fine condition, with no tears, soiling or damage, though there's a hint of a couple of tiny surface indentations on one side (like perhaps some object with tiny legs sat on it for a while). Especially important because it 'is' the first of King's signed limited editions. Made into a movie in 1984. Charlie, born after her parents participated in a government controlled drug experiment, can start fires with her mind alone, and The Shop wants her as a weapon. ; DJ color art; Signed by Author .

Typed Letter, signed ("Robert Motherwell"), to Nancy McDonald of Spanish Refugee Aid Inc. of NY

909 North Street Greenwich CT: 909 North Street March 31 1980 909 North Street, Greenwich, CT: 909 North Street, March 31, 1980. 4to. 2 pp. typed on letterhead. Fine, in brown cloth chemise . Lengthy typed letter with excellent content concerning Motherwell's uneasy negotiation of Spanish politics and art. In 1980 the Jaun March Foundation and the Catalan bank La Caixa organized the first exhibition of Motherwell's work in Spain. His series of works titled Elegies for the Spanish Republic, begun in 1949 and continued until his death in 1991, totaled more than 170 works and would strongly link the artist with anti-Francosim and the lost Spanish Republic. However, as this letter demonstrates, in person, Motherwell maintained a professional, neutral stance, and seemed to have trouble engaging the Spanish in any political conversation. Reading, in part: "I didn't realize at the time of the New York Times announcement that, though the Juan March Foundation originated the show, in Barcelona it was under the auspices of the largest savings bank in Catalonia, 'la Caixa,' at a small museum they have acquired. If I understand correctly, it is either Spanish or certainly Catalonian law that such a bank must spend 50% of it's annual profits on culture - The Jaun March Foundation, as far as I can tell, is almost an exact equivalent of the J.S. Guggenheim Foundation here - They seem extremely wealthy, honorable in intent, and highly efficient - I mean an almost IBM-corporate efficiency, shattering every clichE about 'maOana' (what is ironic is that the fabulously wealthy Juan March was the financial backer of Franco, and yet in my show are major 'Elegies to the Spanish Republic.'). My impression, for what it's worth, is that there's a kind of understanding that anything scholarly or artistic can be done as long as one stays away from partisan politics. For instance, Barcelona insisted that I be present and treated me beautifully, while the Juan March people [from Madrid] had implied that it wasn't necessary to go to Barcelona, and immediately descended on the scene. As you know, there are tremendous Separatist movements in Spain -€Being a fish swimming in foreign waters, I asked various people who know the scene what to do, and the concensus [sic] is that it is a Spanish labyrinth that is *their* problem - Naturally my own interest is in the artistic community, which seems both aware and touched by any outside support. But my experience in Barcelona was (as in Germany, for example) that political discourse is conspicuous by its absence in any general conversation - Everything I have said is impressions - I found the Spanish, unlike Latin Hispanics, extremely reserved and discrete, almost like old-time New England Yankees. What lies underneath I really don't know - I realize I am a bit vague because I really don't *know* anything. I have been going on the artist in me, which senses tensions, pride and formality, eagerness and extreme vulnerability, and since I am not by nature an activist, I have reacted with thorough professionalism instinctively, which seems to be precisely correct - Naturally I find it both strange and irresistable [sic] to show my Hispanic sympathies under such auspices, but there are unexpected occasions: for instance, I've given a small 'Elegy to the Spanish Republic' to the University of Salamance (the oldest one in Spain), and they wish to honor me with a ceremony, which I presume the central government is aware of, and I personally somewhat dread, not being an exhibitionist but an exhibitor - In Barcelona, several young artists told me that, after hearing me speak and reading an interview with me, they were determined to leave for New York. In short, my whole experience is basically as an individual with other individuals, as it is here at home, for that matter. (I have stuck with the Guggenheim Foundation because it is the only Foundation that gives exclusively to individuals, *not* institutions.)"

14 of the artworks are watercolor landscapes in Shropshire through the seasons, (spring-winter), including views of Titterstone Clee Hill, Long Mynd, the Wrekin, Wild Moor, the River Teme and the Devil's Chair Tor. Several are very special, combining her characteristic use of a nearly dry brush at page edges with finely applied greens and light colors, including splendid depictions of the variously colored mists in the backing hills the Shropshire Hill District is so famous for. SIZE: In general, works are over the full sheet and extend to the edges of the paper, measuring 250 x 175 mm. The portraits and the tree study are less. CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: Very Good: Clean, the colors fresh: tips with gentle bends from handling. Covers: Good: some soiling and stains, lower cover with foxing that doesn't continue in and 2 penciled notes in artist's hand. Binding: Better Than Good: solid, true and tight: the upper cover has splits at the 2 bottommost holes with slight loss at hole 20 at the foot: interior is entirely unaffected. PROVENANCE: Through the artist's estate, believed executed ca. 1980. Signed on the verso of the upper cover in black ink with her spaced capitals, the first letter larger in each name. Below, in cursive, she has written, Ludlow Arts Society. Winifred Burlingham was a regional artist who primarily worked in Shropshire into East Wales in watercolor, oils and scraperboard (Shepherdson). As a memoriam to 25 years in Ludlow, she published a booklet of Ludlow views, "Looking Around Ludlow" in 1973, (2 editions). She was a founding member of the Ludlow Arts Society. FORMAT: Pale orange covers, the upper wrapper unsupported cardstock; the lower wrapper plain heavy board. PAGINATION: Confirmed as 14 sheets: 6 sheets removed: 5 sheets have works on the verso. 2 are studies, a watercolor of trees that is quite fine and one in pencil of dinghies and rowers. The 2 other pencil works are portraits of a horse. 1 watercolor shows a woman intently sketching on stone steps with a deep lintel doorway in the background and may be a self-portrait. The remaining 14 works are watercolor landscapes in Shropshire.
