Typed Letter Signed, with If All Else Fails

Garden City: Doubleday. 1980. A full-page letter from Strete to another writer, in part transmitting a copy of his book If All Else Fails (included here). In the letter, Strete laments the science fiction classification the book received, touches on recent kidney troubles that landed him in the hospital, recommends his recipient connect with Jamake Highwater, and expresses displeasure with Doubleday and their offer for Death in the Spirit House (although Doubleday did eventually publish that novel). The bulk of the letter, however, concerns Strete's attempt to enlist the recipient in (while simultaneously warning him about) a suggested trip north for a vision quest "guided by a shaman who is left sided as I am. I know for certain though that I myself could take you to a place where you could see Saquatch and a few other things you have not seen, not even in dreams. It would be dangerous for us both. I was up there this summer and saw the one who has no name... I hate going up there. It takes me years to get over the nightmares. There are things in this world that are truly evil." Strete says that he has been working for seven years on a book about his experiences with shamans that he hopes will be published after he's dead. The letter is on personal stationery, signed by Strete, and is folded in half to fit into the book; near fine. The book, If All Else Fails..., is fine in a near fine dust jacket with a lower edge tear at the front flap fold. Introduction by Jorge Luis Borges, who calls the book "a collection of small nightmares of great consequence." . First Edition. Hardcover.

        Concept Sports/Racing Car

      c. 1980. Mixed media on paper, cut out and laid on a larger sheet. Signed, "Dom Pacitti". 9 1/4 x 25 inches, visible. Framed. 17 1/2 x 32 3/4 inches. The epitome of the American sports car by car stylist, Dom Pacitti That car racing has influenced car design is as interesting as it is obvious because the modern American sports car itself embodies not just aerodynamics but also the sense of danger, the antagonism of competition, the thrill of triumph and superiority of motor racing. This smooth, sleek, dark car conveys an image of latent power that is as unmistakably American as an extravagant science fiction movie. Its dark blue with purple highlights and black windows imply stealth and unsularity, as well as impeccable craftsmanship.

Proximity: A Led Zeppelin Newspaper [run of nine early issues]

Issaquah and Seattle: Proximity, 1980-1983. A significant, early run of Proximity, comprising the first two years of publication. Proximity was one of the earliest Led Zeppelin fanzines, with the first issue being published during the final year the band was still together, just prior to John Bonham's death and their subsequent break-up. It began under the editorship of Juli LeCompte, and gradually came to include Hugh Jones, who emerged as a major contributor to the publication. Richly illustrated with photos, tour information, discography, and articles. While Proximity was published well into the late 1990's, after the first few years the title was changed to Proximity: A Led Zeppelin Collector's Journal, and among the later publications, both the content and context became further removed from the quality of the earliest issues. Quite scarce; OCLC shows no holdings for early issues of Proximity, with a single institutional holding for later issues dating from the mid-1990's on. Nine tabloid issues (29 x 44.5cm), offset printed on recto and verso. Light toning, with a single fold at the center of each newspaper, as issued; about Fine.

        Concept Sports/Racing Car

        Music for Chameleons

US: Random House. New York, Random House, 1980. Hardback edition limited to 50 copies. Each copy was signed, some with personal inscriptions, by the author to his friends and family. This is number 17 with no personal inscription. The book and slipcase (which is a different colour to the more common signed edition of 350 copies) are in near fine condition. There are signs of ageing to the slipcase and some lightening to the spine. Overall though it's a nice copy of a very scarce book. On its release this short story / essay collection was massively popular. Not perhaps as easily recognisable as Breakfast at Tiffany's or In Cold Blood, but with such a small print run certainly an important modern first. . Near Fine. Hardback. Limited Edition. 1980.
