Flash Up: Street PhotoRandom Tokyo 1975-1979

Tokyo: Byakuya Shobo, 1980. Near fine in wrappers with bellyband, lightly rubbed, lacking the publisher's acetate jacket.. First Edition. Quarto. SIGNED by Kurata in Japanese with an autographed note, also in Japanese, laid in. We have not been able to pindown an exact translation, but the note was written at the time of publication and in it Kurata goes to great lengths to thank an unnamed recipient for his support and help. Gritty black and white images of the dark side of Tokyo life, the death shots reminiscent of a glossy Weegee, with the famous cover picture of a Yakuza, heavily tattooed and brandishing a samurai, on a Shinjuku rooftop. Kurata studied with Daido Moriyama. (Parr / Badger, v1, 305).

The finest craftsmen and the highest quality materials have been sought out to create works of the utmost integrity and beauty ... The Press endeavors to create beautiful yet scholarly renditions of contemporary and antiquarian texts. The books are produced as they might have been one hundred or more years ago, using handmade inks, marbled endpapers, hand-set type, and handsewn design bindings. The works are printed by Harold P. McGrath, a Master Printer for over 55 years who has worked with such artists as Leonard Baskin, Fritz Eichenberg, Clare Leighton, and Barry Moser. The result of this attention to detail are works of art ..." (Alan James Robinson's website).

        Codicé Xolotl

Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City 1980 - 2 volumes. xi+164 pages with tables, foldout genealogy line, map, appendices and bibliography. 30 fold out reproductions of the codex in color and black and white. Folio (13 1/2" x 9") bound in beige cloth with black and gilt label to spine and black and gilt pictorial to cover housed in a slipcase. Introduction by Miguel Leon-Portilla. Second edition. he Codex Xolotl (also known as Codicé Xolotl) is a postconquest cartographic Aztec codex, thought to have originated before 1542. It is annotated in Nahuatl and details the preconquest history of the Valley of Mexico, and Texcoco in particular, from the arrival of the Chichimeca under the king Xolotl in the year 5 Flint (1224) to the Tepanec War in 1427. The codex describes Xolotl's and the Chichimeca's entry to the, at the time, unpopulated valley as peaceful. Although this picture is confirmed by the Novahispanic historian Fernando de Alva Cortés Ixtlilxochitl (1568 or 1580–1648), there is other evidence that suggests that the area was inhabited by the Toltecs. Ixtlilxochitl, a direct descendant of Ixtlilxochitl I and Ixtlilxochitl II, based much of his writings on the documents which he most probably obtained from relatives in Texcoco or Teotihuacan. The codex was first brought to Europe in 1840 by the French scientist Joseph Marius Alexis Aubin, and is currently held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. The manuscript consists of six amatl boards measuring 42 by 48 centimetres (17 in × 19 in), with ten pages and three fragments from one or more pages. While it is unknown who did the binding of the manuscript, it is cast like a European book back to back. The Codex Xolotl has been an important source in giving detailed information on material, social, political and cultural changes in the region during the period. It is one of the few still surviving cartographic histories from the Valley of Mexico and one of the earliest of its type. Condition: Some external wear to slip case else a very good set in slipcase.         Il nome della rosa [Signed] [The Name of the Rose]

Bompiani, Milano 1980 - A Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (some of the common toning to the pages due to the type of paper used to produce the book, prior owner's neat gift presentation to the front free endpaper, some spotting to the rear board), in a virtually Fine dust jacket (quite light wear, short crease line to the rear flap's lower left corner), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO on the title page. The dust jacket's rear flap shows the correct price of "L. 10.000 / IVA compresa". An historical murder mystery set in Italian monastery in the year 1327 and Eco's debut novel, the novel combines semiotics, biblical analysis, medieval studies, and literary theory. A number of other monks then die under mysterious circumstances and William is asked to conduct an investigation. The novel provided the basis for the 1986 movie of the same name starring Sean Connery as William of Baskerville and Christian Slater as Adso of Melk. Signed copies of the work are quite scarce.         Ma Gastronomie. Introduction et presentation de Felix Benoit. Neuf compositions de Dunoyer de Segoznac

Flammarion Paris: Flammarion, 1980. Quarto, 177 pages. Later printing of the original French edition of this monumental work for so many chefs. The book was finally made available again in 2008, with a new introduction by Chef Thomas Keller, in which he says, "Through Chef Point's words I finally understood and discovered a higher sense of purpose. . . .," High praise indeed from Thomas Keller. In our experience, this was always the one book being sought when a young cook, grease spattered and tired-eyed, would enter our shop, saying "chef told me I have to read this book..." This book can create a reader out of a non-reader, and perhaps a chef - perhaps - out of a fry cook. Fine.         Faksimile - Die Eidgenössische Chronik des Wernher Schodoler. Um 1510 bis 1535 (2 Bde. Faksimile; 1 Kommentarband).

2° (39.5 x 29.5 cm), Faksimilebde.: insgesamt 1048 Seiten mit 325 zum teil kolorierten Federzeichnungen; Kommentarbd.: 410 S.; , Faksimile: Bd. 1: Ganzleder mit Blindprägung, 2 Schliessen u. 10 Beschläge in OLwd.-Schuber; Bd. 2: Ganzleder mit Blindprägung, 2 Schliessen in OLwd.-Schuber; Kommentarband in OHLdr., Ldr. teilweise mit kleinen Flecken, sonst sehr schönes u tadelloses Exemplar. 233 von 980 arab. num. Exemplaren.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED (ALS) to Gahan Wilson, dated 5 November 1980, two pages on two sheets of letter-sized bond

Old fold creases, a bit of irregular tanning (due to offsetting or. sunning, probably) to one edge, very good. (#140957). Written with a red felt-tip marker in a cursive/printing hybrid (due to his typewriter being "sick. Took it to the vet and am still waiting reports on the surgery: I know its platen was removed and I'm afraid it also had a miscarriage.") The letter is prime Bloch, displaying his impish sense of humor in every paragraph. He regrets that Wilson was unable to get to the 1980 World Fantasy Convention (held in Baltimore) at which Bloch was Master of Ceremonies. "I'd not met Jack Vance [the Guest of Honor] before -- a very nice guy -- plays the banjo and kazoo simultaneously and knows all the obscure songs of the 'Twenties, including one of my favorites, 'Lena Was the Queen of Palesteena.'" Concludes with some chafing of Wilson on the news that he is writing a novel. "I don't draw on lavatory walls, you know. Shouldn't we have some kind of detente?" Amusing and affectionate in equal proportion.
