        An Alphabet Book

(Boston): Bromer, Anne & David, 1980. 24pp. Although the colophon indicates that forty copies of this hand-colored manuscript were executed, Nancy Chandler Edwards completed only thirty copies. Of these, twenty-two were for sale. The artist used the theme of nature in decorating the letters of the alphabet. Illustrations of animals, birds, fish, insects, and flowers are all meticulously and perfectly painted in watercolors. The book was bound in full blue morocco at Green Dragon Bindery, and the artist crocheted a dainty three-color bookmark for the manuscript. Nancy Edwards was the calligrapher for our deluxe copies of "Poems of Life" by Emily Dickinson, and we consider her work positively "jewel-like." A very fine copy. (See Bromer/Edison, p.6). (1 1/4 by 1; 32x25mm).

The Accidental Death of an Anarchist

London: Pluto Plays, 1980. First edition of the English translation of the playwright's magnum opus; orginally published in Italy in 1970. Thin octavo. Signed by Dario Fo on the the title page. Fine in illustrated wrappers as issued; no hardcover edition was published.Dario Fo is the recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature and is "[a]rguably the most widely performed contemporary playwright in world theatre" (Mitchel, 1999). The Accidental Death of an Anarchist shows that "[t]he quality that makes Fo uniquely powerful [is] the ability to wring wild laughter out of insidious corruption" (Guardian). "Simon Nye's witty translation updates and relocates the play suitably close to contemporary England. Fo is that rare thing, a far-left playwright with a popular, comic touch. And his stinging attack upon the black arts of government cover-up, manipulation and mendacity could not be more timely" (Evening Standard).

La Carotte et le Bâton. Nouvelle édition.

Paris, La Table Ronde, 1980. VERY NICE COPY. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Firestarter

New York: Viking. NF/F. 1980. 1st Trade Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0670315419 . 1st trade edition/1st printing, Viking, 1980. SIGNED by author on the half-title page, and dated 3/21/81 by him. The book is straight, clean, has no handwriting - other than the author's name and date signed - or soiling in the text and it is unread - very tight. It is bound in black paper over boards with a red cloth spine panel and gold gilt and black printing. The corners are slightly bumped, there are a couple of very small, faint dust spots to the page edges, and a small faint spot to the upper spine cloth. Plus, the binder goofed on this one - while the book was being put together 2 tiny areas of the outer edge of the front end page got caught under the edge of the pastedown. I've left it just as it was where the little tiny pieces torn off the edge of the end page are still trapped under the edge of the pastedown (see left side of my image of the copyright page). The dustjacket is price intact, clean, crisp and unfaded, it has no chips or tears, and it has 99.9% escaped the usual tanning this dustjacket is prey to. Made into a movie in 1984 starring Drew Barrymore as the inheritor of 2nd generation supernormal powers being chased by the Agency who'd given weaker versions of her powers to her parents via experimental drugs. One of the best movie adaptations of any of King's books. ; 9-1/2" x 6-3/8"; 428 pages; Signed by Author .

V-Discs: A History and Discography [plus] V-Discs: First Supplement [two volumes, available as a set only]

New York/Westport CT/London: Greenwood Press. Very Good+. 1980, 1986. First Edition. Hardcover. 0-313-22207-X . (no dust jacket, as issued) [first book is a solid clean copy, no significant wear but with a small dent at top edge of both covers, not affecting the integrity of the book or its binding in any way; second book is Near Fine, with minor wear to spine ends, small scrape mark on rear cover]. (Association for Recorded Sound Collections Discographic Reference Series)(Discographies, No. 5)(Discographies, No. 25) Series (B&W photographs) First volume: a massive, 1166-page history and reference book about V-Discs, "a unique series of phonograph records produced during and after World War II by a small military group in New York [which] were distributed around the world during the life of the program [and] not only provided entertainment for overseas military personnel, but also served as links to home." The book is in three sections: (1) historical synthesis, a review of the formation, organization and operations of the program from 1943 through its termination in 1949; (2) an annotated discography of all Army and Navy V-Discs, including many unissued selections; (3) an appendix, including various numerical lists cross-referenced to make it easy to locate the work of any individual artist. Second volume: the essential supplement to the first book, presenting not just corrections and additions, but a "large amount of new information that has come to light" since its publication. The latter comprises more than 600 new items, including "new details on recording dates, personnel, sources, playing times, composers and test pressings, [plus] data on selections recorded at previously unknown V-Disc recording sessions." As noted in the Introduction, the supplement "is not a revised version of that [1980] book, but should be used in conjunction with it"; therefore, these two books will be sold only as a set, because breaking them up would be doing the buyer a disservice. You need both, and here they are together -- a definitive and indispensible guide to this fascinating sub-area of record collecting. (The ISBN on the supplement book is 0-313-25421-4.) .

        Document Koen (Document Park)

Seven Sha, Tokyo 1980 - This is a first edition, first printing of Kohei Yoshiyuki¿s critically acclaimed Document Koen (Document Park) published by Seven Sha, Tokyo, Japan in 1980. Yoshiyuki was a young commercial photographer in Tokyo in the early 1970s when he and a colleague walked through Chuo Park in Shinjuku one night. He noticed a couple on the ground, and then one man creeping toward them, followed by another. I had my camera, but it was dark, he told the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki in a 1979 interview for a Japanese publication. Researching the technology in the era before infrared flash units, he found that Kodak made infrared flashbulbs. Mr. Yoshiyuki returned to the park, and to two others in Tokyo, through the 70s. He photographed heterosexual and homosexual couples engaged in sexual activity and the peeping toms who stalked them. Measuring approximately 11 x 8 inches, the book is bound in photographically illustrated wraps with a thin glassine dust jacket. Both the book and dust jacket are in FINE condition.         The Impossible Dream Nos. 1-4 [All Published]

London: X N Trix Productions, 1980-86. First issue Xeroxed in b/w and saddle-stapled; subsequent issues offset printed in color. & & All issues published of this powerful anarcho-punk fanzine, produced by members of Poison Girls. Along with Crass, with whom they collaborated on numerous projects, the Poison Girls helped to create the philosophy and look of modern anarcho-punk, yet are much more (unjustly) obscure than many of their fellow groups today. The fact that the lyrics were written and sung by a middle-aged mother of two is often cited as if they were a curiosity of the movement, rather than perhaps the band that most fully outlined the beliefs of Anarcho-punk and peace punk. One of the most beautiful and powerful periodicals of the 80's.

        Correspondence

1980-1990. Five items from King over a decade (roughly from Firestarter to Dark Tower III), showing a marked decline in availability and energy for events ancillary to his own writing. All letters are to fellow horror writer and chronicler of horror writers Stanley Wiater. The first is a typed letter unsigned congratulating Wiater on the success of one of his stories in a contest that King had judged and agreeing to read a novel manuscript of Wiater's, delineating what he had liked in the outline, while withholding an agent recommendation until after the reading. (King explains in a postscript that he is leaving town before the letter is to be secretarially typed, thus the lack of signature.) The second typed letter signed later that year (1980) lists the reasons he has yet to read the manuscript of Nightouch (author tour, moving to Bangor, his own writing, other authors' manuscripts). He writes "... I want to add that yours is first in line. I remember what it's like to go to the mailbox hoping to hear something - anything - from anybody!" The third typed letter signed (1984) agrees to read a second manuscript, while simultaneously declaring "I'm buried deeper and deeper in mail. I'm thinking of moving somewhere where the mail don't go!" Signed "Steve." The fourth typed note signed thanks Wiater for a postcard he sent King picturing King's new house in earlier years ("Tabby [Tabitha King, his wife] was quite delighted with it, attached as she is to the house") and declines an interview Wiater requested, adding that he's saying "no" more than "yes" these days, as he is tired of talking about himself. The fifth note is from King's secretary, declining, on King's behalf, his inclusion in Wiater's book on horror filmmakers. All letters are folded for mailing, else fine, with envelopes included; the last four are on King's stationery. Also included is a ticket and program to a 1985 appearance by King at the University of Massachusetts. The decade from 1980 to 1990 saw King grow from being a popular but little-known writer of genre fiction to being perhaps the bestselling novelist in the world. His last book of the 1970s had had, for him, a large first printing of 50,000 copies. His first book of the 1980s, Firestarter, had his first six-figure first printing -- 100,000 copies. By the end of the decade, The Dark Half (1989) and Four Past Midnight (1990) had first printings of 1.5 million copies each. The increased demands that success and celebrity placed on King can be seen in his increasingly short responses to Wiater's letters over the course of the decade, as well as his increasing inability to make time for the kinds of requests that earlier he had been able and willing to take on. .
