I Want to Take Picture

Atlanta: Nexus Press. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of one of the seminal photobooks of the 1980's. SIGNED BY BURKE INSIDE ORIGINAL DRAWING OF HIS HAND. One of only 1000 copies printed of the first edition. "Bill Burke has become known for his large-format portraits shot on Polaroid Land film, which have the formality and feel of nineteenth-century photographs whilst remaining acutely modern in their sensibilities. In his best book, I Want to Take Picture, this technique is entirely appropriate, since it records his personal pilgrimage to southeast Asia, duplicating the enterprise of the old colonialist photographers but adding a contemporary twist... "Although the pictures have a nineteenth-century feel, the book is also a diary that records a twentieth-century experience. Burke not only uses his photographs, but also employs documents- reproductions of ephemera like money and bus tickets- and collages them with handwritten captions. The result is a kaleidoscopic impression of his journeys, taking the book out of the documentary realm and into that of the personal road trip. However, this particular sojourn does not merely connate the search for self that occupies so much of late twentieth-century American photography. It also represents a moving attempt to come to terms with some of the events that haunted his generation" (Parr/Badger, The Photobook). Roth 101. Atlanta: Nexus Press, 1987. Folio, photo-pictorial boards. A fine copy. Rare signed.

        Firestarter signed limited edition

Huntington Woods, MI: Phantasia Press. F/F. 1980. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0932096050 . 1st edition/1st printing. This is # 311 of 725 only of these signed limited edition in dustjacket and slipcase copies, Signed and dated: 'Stephen King, July 6, 1980' (the 2nd of the 4 days that it took King to sign these limited editions). Firestarter was Stephen King's first signed limited edition and this signed limited edition predates the 1st trade edition by 3 months (not issued by Viking till the end of September, 1980). Though this limited edition is beautifully constructed, it was not as well protected as many of his later signed limited editions, being housed in an open sided slipcase and also having a dustjacket which many times got considerable wear from sliding in and out of the slipcase. Consequently, few have survived in excellent condition. The book is bound in dark blue leather boards with gilt printing and this one is fine: straight, clean and tight with no damage or soiling, and no handwriting other than the author's on the limitation page at the back of the text. The dustjacket is also fine: price intact ($35.00), clean, crisp and bright with Whelan's famous artwork in unfaded condition and with no damage or wear. It has been protected by a removable, clear mylar cover. The leather-textu red paper-covered boards slipcase is also in fine condition, with no tears, soiling or damage, though there's a hint of a couple of tiny surface indentations on one side (like perhaps some object with tiny legs sat on it for a while). Especially important because it 'is' the first of King's signed limited editions. Made into a movie in 1984. Charlie, born after her parents participated in a government controlled drug experiment, can start fires with her mind alone, and The Shop wants her as a weapon. ; DJ color art; Signed by Author .

Kelpra Studios., London 1980 - Eye & Camera. Red,Blue,Yellow.(Levinson 317)Original Screenprint printed by Kelpra Studios in 1980. Signed in pencil, not numbered, proof pull outside the edition of 150. In excellant condition.Image size: 400 x 605 mmSheet size 600 x 750 cm.The Eye and Camera prints are complex works, not yet appreciated for their approach to the figure and to modernism. The series is based on photographs of Piper’s wife Myfanwy, and presents the female figure in semi-nude poses which at first glance are suggestive of advertising imagery. It shows Piper at the forefront of Pop Art, taking up Pop Art’s concern with bright colours and images from popular culture. The Eye and Camera series reduces the figure to its essential features, almost to an abstraction. Although the individual works are thematically similar, there is no repetition between them. The prints transform a photographic portrait of a nude into a more universal statement about love and the body. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

      Giunti. New. Hardcover.
Il codice di Leonardo da Vinci nella Biblioteca Trivulziano di Milano. Trascrizione diplomatica e critica di Anna Maria Brizio. [Milan, Biblioteca Trivulziano, ms. 2162]

Florence: Giunti Barbèra, 1980. 25 x 36 cm, 55 plates, 138 pp
<p Compiled about 1487-1490, Codex Trivulzianus records Leonardo's attempt to organize and arrange the part of the Italian language which deals with science, philosophy and academic subjects in general. Many of the words collected here derive from Latin, and almost all of them are drawn from such famous Renaissance works as Roberto Valturius' "De re militari" and Luigi Pulci's "Vocabulista". This is an exceptional document for the study of that period of the Italian language when rules and spellings were not yet firmly established. In addition Codex Trivulzianus contains an important series of architectural drawings which are primarily studies pertaining to a competition held to complete the construction of the Milan cathedral. Accompanied by a volume with critical and diplomatic transcriptions by Anna Maria Brizio. Limited edition of 998 copies supplied with deluxe leather covered clamshell case.
Our Promise to You: ALL OUR DUST JACKETS COME WITH CLEAR BRODART PROTECTIVE COVERS. Original Manuscript for Dorothy Lamour's Autobiography, "My Side of the Road," with profuse corrections by the author, signed, and an inscribed First Edition

New York: Prentice-Hall, 1980. Original manuscript for actress Dorothy Lamour's 1980 Autobiography, "My Side of the Road," published by Prentice-Hall in 1980. With profuse corrections, additions, and deletions by her throughout in holograph blue ink, and SIGNED on the title page and at the end of the text. Further corrections are made by the book's editor throughout, including annotations and rearrangements. Finally, many typesetter's notes are present throughout. All told, the final submitted manuscript for the book.& & Many interesting deletions and cut sequences are present. For example, there is a two-and-one-half page deleted sequence in which Lamour tells of an amusing experience during an appearance with Clark Gable on the Edgar Bergen-Charlie McCarthy radio show; another deleted sequence regards filming of director John Ford's "Donovan's Reef" with John Wayne and Lee Marvin: " first scene with Lee, was a kind of love scene in which we had to run to each other and kiss. Lee ran so fast [that] when he bent to kiss me, his front tooth nearly went through my lip. It wasn't a serious accident so we laughed it off."& & Another deleted sequence tells of Bob Hope's special talent for making money: "Bob Hope found some property out near the ranch near Malibu Canyon, and even though it cost him $44,000 he decided to buy it. In the late seventies, he turned down $42 million for it. I don't what he's saving it for..."& & Also bound in is a typed letter signed, dated 1980, from the publisher, stating that the manuscript is being returned to Ms. Lamour, and expressing how enjoyable it has been to work with her.& & Laid in is a mocked-up set of captions for the book's photo inserts. Each caption is affixed to a card backing, with printer's notations in holograph ink in blue, pink, and green.& & Included is a first edition of Lamour's book, inscribed on the front endpaper verso: "Jackie Dear / Good Luck-God Bless You-and Aloha! / Dottie (Dorothy Lamour) / P.S. It's been great working with you and making you a friend--You're a Doll." Laid in is a signed photograph (3.5 x 5.5 in.).& & A fascinating manuscript for a candid and revealing autobiography by one of the great Hollywood legends.& & Bound in blue cloth with gilt titles on the spine. 328 pages, Near Fine. The book is Near Fine in a Very Good plus or better dust jacket with slight toning and a tiny chip.

Two Holographic Poems. Metaphor: Like: = I [&] II

1980. A two-part poem penned by Gregory Corso for his friend Fred Martin, Managing Editor at New Directions. Apocryphally at least, Corso "writ out" the poem for Martin at a bibulous evening at one of New York';s watering holes. In his time at New Directions, Martin worked with Corso, as well as Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. "Metaphor" is a variation on Corso';s poem "Piffle", published in 1980 -- the same year the poem was "writ out for Fred Martin." Shortly thereafter, following the assassination of John Lennon, the poem was reworked and retitled "For John Lennon." Corso';s practice seems to have been constantly to re-write, revise, and recycle his poems, perhaps to fit the occasion.

NOW VERY SCARCE, A UNIQUELY DESIGNED AND PRINTED ENTRY FROM THE ARION PRESS. This was the seventh book produced by the press while under the direction of Andrew Hoyem. It was one of the press’ most commercially successful productions, and certainly one of its most aesthetically unusual. "The best introduction one can find into the manner of perceiving dimensions." - Isaac Asimov. Edwin Abbott Abbott (1838-1926) has been ranked as one of the leading scholars and theologians of the Victorian era. He received highest honors in mathematics, classics, and theology at St. John's College, Cambridge, and in 1862 began a brilliant career, during which he served as schoolmaster of some of England's outstanding schools. At the same time he distinguished himself as a scholar, and in 1889 he retired to his studies. One of his few works of fiction, Flatland, has given pleasure to thousands of readers over many generations Unless you're a mathematician, the chance of you reading a novel about geometry is probably near zero. But this work is a classic and would be considered a great read by most anyone. FLATLAND imagines a two-dimensional world inhabited by sentient geometric shapes who think their planar world is all there is. But one Flatlander, A. Square, discovers the existence of a third dimension and thus the limits of his world's assumptions about reality. And, in the spirit of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, FLATLAND comes across as quite a humourous satire on society and the class distinctions of Victorian England. If you've ever wondered what a 4th dimension would look like, FLATLAND provides a lens through which you can imagine that extension out of our 3D world. Abbot accomplishes this by describing the eye-opening extension of his narrator's 2D world when visited by a 3D apparition, a "sphere". His framing of the foundational issues through the experiences of what you'd expect to be the most "two dimensional” character in fiction are really quite engaging. The story line is as interesting as the mathematics and the mathematics are beyond fascinating. Predating Einstein and the Quantum Theory by decades, FLATLAND may have helped to open the minds of people to the entirely new ways of viewing our reality. The changes which would soon be coming could hardly have been envisioned in Victorian England. The book is a classic of theoretical physics rendered for accessible for layman’s use and it is a classic of science fiction which lays the groundwork for countless such literary explorations in the 20th century and beyond.
