        Water's Edge: The Limited Edition

Lyme, CT: Callaway Editions(1980). First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 76 pages. Artist Book. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 216 numbered and signed copies. This copy is "Out of Series" (the space intended for the limitation number is blank), does not come with the print, but is still signed by Harry Callahan. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition, which is inferior to it in terms of production values. There is no ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Harry Callahan, Nicholas Callaway, Anne Kennedy, and Katy Homans: Oversize-volume format. Hand-crafted beige linen cloth boards. Photographs by Harry Callahan. Poem by A. R. Ammons. Matching hand-crafted clamshell box. Printed on 100 LB Quintessence Paper using 300-line offset lithography by Acme Printing Company in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is outstanding in its purity, rich tonal range, and warmth. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Harry Callahan's "Water's Edge". Masterpiece. His most important body of work. "From 1941 to the 1970's, from the shores of Lake Michigan to the dunes of Cape Cod, Callahan continually returned to his theme. First influenced by Ansel Adams and later nourished by the encouragement of Moholy-Nagy and Edward Steichen, Callahan's 'Beach Series' reveals a strength and clarity of design and form that are uniquely his own. With a reverential respect toward place, he uses the elements of the landscape - the ethereal light of the shore, the serene expanses of space, the forms shaped by ocean and wind - to create an extraordinary series of photographs, contemporary yet timeless. A. R. Ammons' poem, 'Corsons Inlet', evokes a sense of the beach complementary to Callahan's own vision, and in the Afterword, Callahan himself writes of the significance of the 'Beach Series' in his photographic oeuvre" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Harry Callahan collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Harry Callahan. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: This copy is "Out Of Series", with the space intended for the limitation number blank, and without the print. It nevertheless remains eminently collectible because of the book itself, its exquisite production, and Callahan's signature. Far too many copies available online, particularly of the regular trade edition, have major flaws yet command incredible prices whereas the Limited Edition commands at least $5000 because of the print. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 48 plates, 2 gatefolds. Harry Callahan's "Water's Edge" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. .

The Farce of Sodom by The Right Honourable Earl of Rochester. Written for the Royall Company of Whoremasters and printed a-new upon the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the untimely Demise of our Noble Author in the thirty-third year of his Life. With Sets and Costumes suitable for Theatrical Performances designed by Donald Friend

Melbourne, Gryphon Books, 1980. Folio (390 x 290 mm), [viii], vi, 67 pages with numerous illustrations and 19 tipped-in plates (all but one in colour) and endpaper illustrations (all by Donald Friend). Half black morocco and purple velvet; a fine copy in the slipcase (a little marked). 'Rochester's Lyrical, lewd & licentious poems were circulated only in manuscript during his lifetime. The earliest printed Editions appeared a year after his Death. But "The Farce of Sodom" was never printed in England. For centuries its fame (or notoriety) depended on crude Continental imprints. Consequently, in England "Sodom" was a sort of obscene literary rumour, like Sullivan's ( - or was it Gilbert's?) suppressed "Sod's Opera", except to those who had privileged access to a few manuscript copies, only two of which are known to have survived until the present day. Thus this Edition is issued with a handwritten Text in keeping with the Manuscript tradition' (Editor's Note). The calligraphy is also by Donald Friend. The edition is limited to only 250 copies signed by the artist; this is number 26.

Lebenslange Echtheitsgarantie!

"Kvílení": Czech samizdat edition of "Howl," "Kaddish," "Over Kansas," "The Green Automobile," "King Majales," "Magic Psalm," "The Change: Kyoto-Tokio Express," and other shorter poems. Also included are Ferlinghetti's "Starting from San Francisco" and other poems, and seven short poems by Gregory Corso

[Czechoslovakia]: self-published, 1980. Original gray cloth with red stamped title to spine, top edge yellow; [3], 121 leaves of carbon copy typescript to rectos, on thin onion paper measuring 29.2 x 20.3 cm. Wrappers soiled; boards lightly distended; internally fine. Czech samizdat edition of three American poets of the Beat Generation: Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Gregory Corso, published during the height of Czechoslovak "normalization" period, when the production and circulation of such texts was illegal. Jan Zábrana (1934-1984), the translator, was close to Ginsberg; he translated and published his poetry and other Beat writers already in the early 1960s. Interest in the Beat Generation preceded Ginsberg's first trip to Prague in February of 1965 (a second trip followed in late April of 1965). A 1959 essay ("Americká bohéma") by Igor Hájek in the journal Svetová literatura introduced Beat writers to the broader Czech public and included translations of some of their poems, including excerpts from Howl. The poetry of the American Beat writers was in energetic contrast to official Czech poetry of the late 50s and early 60s, which "comprised either panegyrics to the communist state, or innocuous, sentimental musings" (Kopecký 2010, 98). At that time, counter-culture Czech poets were in virtual obscurity. The director Pavel Jurácek wrote of Ginsberg's visit, that the Czech beatniks were "ready to serve and worship him" (Bla?ek 36). His poems as well as Ferlinghetti's appeared in Svetová literatura with translations by Zábrana and articles about the Beat Generation were published in Kulturní tvorba. During Ginsberg's stay in Prague, he and Zábrana appeared together at public readings, with Zábrana providing Czech translations to Ginsberg's poems. Both Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti achieved poetic celebrity status in Czechoslovakia, with their poems heard on radio and television, as well as at small theaters and poetry readings, particularly at the Viola cafe in Prague. The Viola cafe functioned as the "hang-out" for young poets and artists in Prague and their weekly poetry readings featured work by Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, and Corso, whose poetry also appears in this samizdat collection. According to Zábrana, the Beats' were attractive to a Czech audience due to their "thematic urgency," which was connected to their dissident, non-conformist, and yet socially engaged worldview. Initially Ginsberg received positive attention from the Czech press, but within a few weeks censorship restricted the publication of his work and he was followed more closely by the secret police. He became a persona non grata to the regime following his crowning as "The King of May" at the rowdy May 1st, 1965 celebration-a student-organized street festival that had been allowed to take place after prior years of clashes, unrest, and repressive action at the event. Ginsberg was denounced by Czech authorities and the state-controlled press; he was deported on May 7th, having been labelled a "moral and political danger" due to his his sexual promiscuity, his antagonistic views of the domestic regime, and for supposedly inciting the Czech youth. His poem "The King of May", which he wrote on the plane from Prague, appears in this anthology. It has been argued that Ginsberg unwittingly gave the Czech authorities an argument to crackdown on native intellectuals and writers, who had enjoyed relative freedom following the relaxation of restrictions in the early 1960s. Consequently, two significant magazines, Tvár and Kni?ní kultura, were shuttered. Publication of translations of Ginsberg's poetry was prohibited, and production was halted on several already prepared selections of his and other Beat writers' work. Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti were nonetheless included in a significant anthology of new American Poetry, Obeznámení s noci, which appeared in 1967, and the poetry and prose of Beat writers continued to circulate unofficially. Ginsberg's denunciation only raised his status in the minds of many Czech readers, even while the regime strengthened its totalitarian grip in the years after Ginsberg's deportation. As Václav Havel put it, "Beat poetry and prose have most likely been perceived in our unfree conditions as even more rebellious than in the land of their origin" (Kopecký 100). While it was no longer permitted to publish works by Beat poets, they continued to influence the Czech underground (both literary and musical) through the circulation of samizdat. Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti publicly condemned the persecution and imprisonment of Czech underground artists in the 1970s and 1980s. Both writers visited Prague following the fall of the Communist regime.

Gorey, Edward] Bat Bean Bag Toy

Toy Works, (Middle Falls, NY) 1980 - This bean bag toy of a bat with outstretched wings measures approximately fifteen inches from wingtip to wingtip. The fabric is printed with a black and white crosshatched pattern that is shaded on the wings and body to give the figure more dimensionality, evoking Gorey's characteristic drawing style. The wings are stiffened and stitched along the folds. The bat also has glittering red rhinestone eyes. This is one of five bean bag animals in a collection designed by Edward Gorey and produced by Toy Works; it is also the largest of these toys. Although the toys in this series are not all necessarily characters from Gorey's works, this bat appears to be inspired by his designs for a 1977 production of Dracula. Fine.

The Complete EC Library: Weird Fantasy (4 Volume Boxed Set)

Russ Cochran, 1980. Hard Cover. VF - Very Fine. Various. 4 Volume Slipcased set. Published originally by William M. Gaines. Weird Fantasy (1950-3) continued the numbering of its predecessor, A Moon A Girl, Romance, hence early issues are numbered #11 through 17. The final issues were normalised, giving 22 issues in total. Publisher William M. Gaines always preferred the science fiction Comics of all his publications. Even though modest sellers, he kept at least on title going from 1950 until the end in 1956. These Comics continue the dystopian view of man, formed by companion title Weird Science. They deal with man & his foibles as he attempts to visit & colonise space, interact with alien species or live with atomic weapons. Despite their pessimism, they are also imaginative and darkly humorous. From 1952 writer Ray Bradbury's stories were adapted & several are feature here. Other science fiction writers were also sampled without their knowledge, adding to the sophistication of stories on offer. Add into the mix some of the most beautiful visions of 1950s science fiction from artists Al Feldstein, Wally Wood, Al Williamson, Harvey Kurtzman, Joe Orlando, Jack Kamen & others. Weird Fantasy represents some of the finest science fiction stories ever illustrated. Purchase this handsome high quality reprint anthology today & find out why. Each book is smyth sewn and deluxe bound to last a lifetime of re-reading. Very Fine condition with only minor shelf-wear to slipcase. 768 pages.         Cosmos.

Random House, New York 1980 - First edition of one of the best-selling science books ever published. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Signed by Carl Sagan on the title page. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert Aulicino, jacket painting by Adolph Schaller. Signed first printings are rare. Cosmos is the best-selling science book ever published in the English language. Brilliant and provocative, it traces today's knowledge and scientific methods to their historical roots, blending science and philosophy in a wholly energetic and irresistible way. "Enticing, imaginative, readable, iridescent" (The New York Times). It was also a thirteen-part television series written by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan, and Steven Soter, with Sagan as presenter. It was executive-produced by Adrian Malone, produced by David Kennard, Geoffrey Haines-Stiles, and Gregory Andorfer, and directed by the producers, David Oyster, Richard Wells, Tom Weidlinger, and others. It covers a wide range of scientific subjects, including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the universe. The series was first broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Service in 1980, and was the most widely watched series in the history of American public television until The Civil War. As of 2009, it was still the most widely watched PBS series in the world. It went on to win two Emmys and a Peabody Award, and has since been broadcast in more than 60 countries and seen by over 500 million people. It was followed-up by the 2014 documentary television series bearing the same name presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who, as a young high school student, was inspired by Sagan.         Il Dissoluto Punito" - Original Illustration for Don Giovanni

      - Original illustration for Peter Sellars' 1980 production of Don Giovanni, by the renowned American artist and writer best known for his unsettling Gothic tales. The full Italian title of the opera, "Il Dissoluto Punito, osia: Il Don Giovanni," is lettered in Classical capitals within a detailed border composed of a dead wolf's pelt. The illustration was used for both the program and the curtain of the opera production. Pen and ink on paper. Signed in brown ink at the lower right margin and captioned "curtain 1/4"=1'" in black ink at the lower right corner. Registration marks and Gorey's faint erased pencil tracings are visible beneath ink. Image 6.5 x 7.5 inches (15.7x19 cm), on sheet measuring 11 x 13.75 inches. Nicely framed. After the great stage director Peter Sellars made his mark with Wagner's Ring Cycle in the late 1970's, he was invited to produce Mozart opera, "Don Giovanni," at the Monadnock, New Hampshire Music Festival. Already marking his career as a daring innovator, Sellars persuaded Gorey, who was recently celebrated for his brilliant, macabre designs for the Broadway production of Dracula, to create the sets and costumes for the Festival's Palace Theatre production. The successful performance ran September 20th and 23rd, 1980 with musical direction by James Bolle. This illustration is a fine example of Gorey's meticulous craftsmanship, through both the faint underlying pencil sketches which reveal his attempts to perfect the lettering and spacing, and in the richly inked shading and textural details of the Gothic wolf's head and skin border design.
