?Howl and Other Poems,? by Allen Ginsberg, signed and inscribed with drawings by the author on the title page, "For Arthur & Kit Knight / in their house California Pennsylvania / June 16, 1980.? The poet has drawn flower petals and a stem around the ?O? in ?Howl? creating a flower, and added a sun in the upper right hand corner. Later printing, soft cover: San Francisco, City Lights Books, Number 4, (1973 printing), 4.75" x 6.25", 44 p. Scuffing from sticker removal on front cover partially affecting the last name "Williams" and " Four" in lower left corner, light wear along spine and edges, else near fine condition. Without a doubt, Allen Ginsberg?s poem ?Howl? was one of the most influential pieces of poetry to be published in the 20th century. The poem itself is widely considered in the literary community to be one of the great works of American literature. On October 7th, 1955 Ginsberg gave the first performance of his poem which, according to statements of those who were there to see i

        Fire-Starter / flat-signed, top provenance

New York: Viking Press, 1980 Fine book in a Fine Jacket, flat-signed by Stephen King without inscription, top provenance on the signature. New York: Viking, 1980. First Edition. Signed by King on the title page, without inscription ("flat" signed). Octavo, pictorial jacket, 428 pp. Fine in fine, unclipped jacket. Very handsome signed copy of what's been called Stephen King's quintessential "mid-range" title, with exceptional provenance. The well-paced story of a young girl - a second-generation product of a Dark Agency experiment which produced special powers in both of her parents, but nothing like her own special powers - who is being sought by that agency, Firestarter may, in fact, be King at his best. There's reason to believe he's better at the so-named mid-range than he is at the stark, non-REM-dream-ish moods of his "upper" range. Take your pick, in that regard. One of the nicest examples and most collectible copies you'll ever see, handsome, fine, in an unclipped jacket showing no flaws beyond the inevitable toning-to-cream of its white background. Full provenance, with photo of King signing, to the purchaser. King added a particular type of additional mark here, perhaps for the purpose of later authentication. Scarce thus, and the most collectible form of the title. L54n

Cerddi Robert Williams Parry. Detholiad Gyda Rhagymadrodd Gan Thomas Parry

Y Drenewydd, Powys ( Newtown, Powys ): Gwasg Gregynog (Gregynog Press). Very Good with no dust jacket. 1980. Limited Edition No. 167/200. Hardcover. Quarter bound in dark green goatskin, black rule, with green buckram boards. The title embossed in blind on the upper cover and titling in bright gold to the spine. This is No 167 of a Limited Edition of 230 copies of which only 200 numbered copies are for sale (originally published in December 1980 at £112.00 apparently). 15 copies were 'Specials'. This copy has a little light damp staining to the bottom and front edge of the front board (around 2" at it's deepest) but this is hardly noticable as it melds neatly into the exisiting colour, all that is slightly different is the patina in that area. A slight difference in colour to the top front edge of the leather, and there is a small spot on the rear board, but apart from these noted 'faults' the covers are NF. The book is now protected in a new, removable, clear book plastic cover and looks FINE. The book measures 300 mm x 195 mm. Internally, there are NO inscriptions or marks, but this copy belonged to the late David Lyn, a well known Welsh Actor/Producer/Director for Stage, TV and Film, and has his personal 'blind' stamp at the foot of the front free endpaper. There is also some very light, but patchy, foxing/browning to the endpapers and to the page fore-edges. (xiv) + 112 pp + (1) limitation. Half title, Calligraphic Title page in green and brown, also Individual Calligraphic Poem Titles variably in either brown or green, a publishers device in green, and 6 lovely b/w wood engravings/plates by Peter Reddick. Printing by Ieuan Rees. ALL Text in WELSH. "Robert Williams Parry, Poet, Soldier and University Lecturer, and was well versed in English poetry, and came under the influence of the Romantic poets, especially Keats and with other Georgian poets, whose imagery is sometimes reflected in their poems. But in spite of all influences, his acute observation, his independent outlook and his meticulous attention to the mode of expression created a body of poetry which has its own special features and is a unique contribution to Welsh literature. He earned widespread recognition as an established poet when he won the chair at the 1910 National Eisteddfod for his poem 'Yr Haf' ('The Summer') , which has been described as "the best known and admired of all the 'Eisteddfod Awdlau' of the 20th "Century." . " Two volumes of his poetry were published - 'Yr Haf a cherddi Eraill' in 1924, and 'Cerddi'r Gaeaf' in 1952." . . ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .

West Point from Phillipstown. To Colonel S. Thayer Superintendant of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point

Printed by Editions Alecto and Master Printer Edward Egerton-Williams 1980 - William James Bennett (c. 1787-1844) was born in England and received his training at the Royal Academy. He emigrated to the United States in 1826, and is best known for his views of American cities, including the Hudson Valley Region, Niagara Falls, and numerous port cities such as New York, Charleston, and Buffalo. Views of West Point were extremely popular in the nineteenth century and this view, after one of Bennett's best-known paintings, was exhibited at the Annual Exhibition of the National Academy in 1832. With the arrival of William Bennett and several other émigré artists such as William Guy Wall and John Hill, the quality of aquatint engraving in America was elevated to a level equaling, or perhaps even surpassing, that of European printmakers. This was the beginning of an important period of American topographical-view making. The aquatint of West Point from Phillipstown was originally published in 1831 by Parker and Clover, who produced four states of the original edition, changing slightly the publication line as the business or printer changed. These four states were all published in a short period of time. The Parker and Clover edition was printed in two colours of ink, blue for the sky and sepia for the foreground, the print was then finished by hand in watercolour. Currier and Ives later acquired the copper plate, and published an issue of this print (not a lithograph as has been noted). As was a common practice of the day, the original publication line was polished out of the copper plate and was re-engraved to read "Currier and Ives." The Currier and Ives aquatint was published in black and white, then coloured in the studio in the same manner as their very popular lithographs. The edition published by Parker and Clover and later by Currier and Ives from this copper plate must have been very limited as the printing caused very little wear to the plate. Whereas lithographs printed from limestone blocks will produce thousands of good quality prints, the copper plate of the aquatint is much more delicate and prints from copper plates do not print successfully in large numbers. The original copper plate engraved for this view remains in excellent condition, and, in this contemporary impression, was limited to 50 copies. Great care was taken to recreate the original 1831 publication techniques. This fascinating print is a trial proof impression of the modern edition. Aquatint engraving. Trial proof impression printed in black and white. Impression limited to 50 copies, from the original copper plate. In perfect condition. Image size: 16 x 22 1/2 inches. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

POPism: The Warhol Sixties (Signed by Andy Warhol)

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1980. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is a signed first edition, first printing of POPism: The Warhol Sixties published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York in 1980. POPism is based in part on the endless reels of audio tape that Warhol obsessively recorded after acquiring a portable tape deck in the mid-60s. Warhol reminisces about his career and the minutiae of his life, discussing with equal emphasis going out to dinner with friends and making the switch from advertising to art--first with paintings, including his instantly recognizable Campbell\'s soup can, and then silkscreen, the period that produced both his Marilyn Monroe and Disaster series. Commenting on the book, Andy Warhol wrote, This is my personal view of the Pop phenomenon in New York is the 1960s. In writing it, Pat Hackett and I have reconstructed the decade, starting in 1960 when I began to paint my first Pop canvases. It\'s a look back at what life was like then for my friends and me... Measuring approximately 10 inches by 8 inches, the book is a hard cover bound in dark gray/ black cloth with a photographically illustrated dust jacket that has not been price clipped. The book and the dust jacket are in FINE condition. The book is protected by a mylar cover. The book is boldly signed on the first free endpaper by Andy Warhol

The last of four volumes of Kitajima's Photo Mail from Okinawa, published to coincide with his shows at the Camp Gallery, founded by Daido Moriyama after the dissolution of Workshop, and predating Kitajima's work in book form.         Wind Instruments

Coracle Press 1980 - Artist's multiple. Numbered 15/30, unsigned (as issued). Corrugated cardboard mailing box (480 x 335 x 50 mm); inside is an oak box (470 x 323 x 40 mm), with cord binding, containing seven self-assembly wood, paper and wire sculptures and an accompanying loose leaf folded folio, which contains eight photographs of the wind instruments constructed by the artist. The book serves as both a guide for the viewer (he/she must complete the work by constructing the individual pieces), and an artist's book in itself, as each photograph of the minimalist wire constructions is beautifully printed on each page. Wind Instruments is thus both a participatory work of art, and a document of its durational construction. This work by British sculptor Richard Wilson with Coracle Press came after Wilson¿s exhibition 11 Pieces (1976) at the Coracle Press Gallery - his first solo show. As an installation artist and sculptor whose practice is rooted in architecture, volume, site-specificity and illusionary space, this artist's book/multiple is evidence of these concerns: a temporary sculptural work, conceived as a series of collapsible structures, amounting to a mini self-contained exhibition in its own right. The work challenges notions of stress, balance and form, as the 'instruments' retain their shape in spite of their material fragility. Condition: cord has shrunk (as is the case in all copies we have seen), wear to cardboard mailing box; as usual the wooden box has a slight curve from age, but contents near fine (one minor tear to the most vulnerable tissue piece). We have seen 4 copies of this important sculptural multiple and the contents of this one (complete) are in the best condition we have seen. Overall VG+ [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Archive of Seven Original Color Cartoon Drawings]

[New York], 1980. Near fine. Pen, pencil and colored ink on paper. Various sizes. Occasional marginal creases, "Kink Shop" has had one panel replaced. Overall near fine. Includes three example of "Detective Noodles," three of "Bosko," and on of "One Day at the Kink Shop. At the time he helped launch PUNK in 1975, John Holmstrom was studying cartooning under Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzman at the School of Visual Art and Holmstrom's background helped define the look and feel of PUNK from the start. The first issue, with Holmstrom's indelible Lou Reed cover, set the pace. As Jon Savage described: "Its cover story was an interview with Lou Reed about his current record METAL MACHINE MUSIC, but, instead of a photo, there was a wickedly accurate cartoon of Reed as metal man: the feature inside was not typeset but told in fumetti. 'I wanted to see something new in comics,' says Holmstrom, 'it fitted the music. Johnny Ramone would always wear cartoon logo T-shirts.' In issue number one of PUNK, the surrounding artwork is as important as important as Reed's insults [...] When the interviewers follow Reed down the block, there they are in cartoons. The effect was both immediate and distanced, a formal innovation on par with MAD magazine" (ENGLAND'S DREAMING p. 132). This fumetti technique (which Holmstrom almost certainly picked up from Kutzman's HELP! magazine) would be utilized throughout PUNK'S tenure and was one of its signatures. Indeed, the comic served in no small part as the blueprint for the visual vocabulary of the magazine. And in addition to Holmstrom, the periodical was a valuable forum for underground comix as well, publishing R. Crumb and Bobby London. Working alone and in various collaborative combinations (with associate editor Bruce Carleton, contributing editor Ken Weiner, and "den mother" Pat Ragan), Holmstrom's cartoons graced the majority of the magazine's covers, and various strips were a PUNK staple. By late 1979, however, PUNK Magazine had slipped into "hiatus" for financial reasons. So Holmstrom, Ragan, Carleton, and Weiner tried to come up with comic strip ideas they might be able to sell "to keep us solvent." The original strips here offered are in part the result of these efforts. Three examples are from Holmstrom's most recognizable creation, "Bosko," who appeared in various periodicals throughout the early 80's, including the Village Voice, the East Village Eye, High Times, and elsewhere. Another three are from the "Detective Noodles" series, a satire of the hard-boiled private detective (one of which appeared in STOP #3). The final example, "One Day At The Kink Shop," appears to be a one-off. Aside from the one strip, we have been unable to determine if any others have appeared in print. Nonetheless, a vivid selection of original comic art from the end of the first decade of punk, from one of its cornerstone artists and key figures.

JAMES LEE BYARS (THE WHITE BOOK) - LIMITED EDITION WITH AN ARTWORK LAID IN

Los Angeles: Foundation for Art Resources, Inc. (FAR), 1980. (BYARS, JAMES LEE). Byars, James Lee, James Butler, Harald Szeeman, Dr. Reiner Speck & Morgan Thomas. JAMES LEE BYARS (THE WHITE BOOK) - LIMITED EDITION WITH AN ARTWORK LAID IN. Los Angeles: Foundation for Art Resources, Inc. (FAR), 1980. First Edition 1/500. Large Square 4to. Wrappers. Artist's Book with Multiple. Fine. np, 17 b&w illustrations. Text in English. This truly unusual James Lee Byars item was produced in an edition of five hundred copies in 1980 by the Los Angeles non-profit Arts organization Foundation for Art Resources, Inc. The publication's primary funding came from an NEA grant that was written in such a way that prevented the actual sale of the book itself! This untitled publication is referred to as "The White Book", and was conceived with the artist's collaboration as an expanded version of the 1978 Kunsthalle Bern exhibition catalogue that was a full documentation of Byars' public performance pieces from 1963 through 1975. Laid in to the book is the unique multiple artwork "The Exhibition of Perfect", which disperses in a rather surprising way when the book is opened. Approximately three hundred of these were sent hors commerce to Museums, Art Libraries, Non-Profit Arts organizations and friends and supporters of FAR. It was never made commercially available - one had to receive this as a gift at the time of publication. The remaining copies languished with the publisher, never having been assembled with the artwork or distributed, and have ultimately disappeared. A bright white, near pristine copy of this exceedingly uncommom and desirable Byars gem. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.
