3). ?? ISBN 3 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS OF DENTISTRY IN UKIYOE.

Tokyo 1980, Shiyaku Shupan. Silver cloth, slip case, very. good, 156p., 106 full color page plates, English text, 21 x. 28 cm., as new bright copy, dj. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. [LIMITED EDITION OF 500 ENGLISH LANGUAGE COPIES ONLY]. A fascinating and obscure monograph, written and translated by Japanese dentists. The work is basically an illustrated history of Japanese dentistry and dental-related Ukiyo-e pictures [old wood-cut polychrome prints] showing anything about teeth, dentistry, use to tooth-picks [Tsumayoshi], primitive tooth brushes [Fusayoji] & Bosuna [tooth polish- ing powder], false teeth [wooden], Ohaguro or teeth black- ening, wooden dentures, hygiene &c. A lovely and obscure collection of old color woodcut prints on Japanese dental subjects. * Covers the Ukiyo-e artists, there genre, with an overview of the history of dentistry in Japan. Pictorial history of dental treatment and oral health customs of the people of the Edo [1604-1868] period. Contains 115 fine color examples selected from the collection of 250 prints in the collection at the Nippon Dental University. * HISTORY OF DENTISTRY IN JAPAN: With a good history of dentistry in Japan, this is both a medical study as well as being an art reference book about the subject of women, prostitutes who used various dental tools and the blackening of teeth called Ohaguro. Fusayoji or tuffed toothpicks, Tsumayoji or toothpicks, Yojiya and Hamigaki or willow shops and tooth powder, wooden dentures & tooth extraction of bad teeth, and use of wooden teeth or wooden dentures as replacements. * WRITTEN UNDER THE AUSPICIES OF THE NIPPON DENTAL UNIVERSITIY AND MUSEM: With an explanation of woodblock prints . This obscure and quite RARE work covers a wide variety of Japanese dental subjects, illustrating examples by use of contemporary color woodblock prints of the period. * FASCINATING WOODCUTS OF INTERNAL WORKINGS OF MALE & FEMALES: There are also a set of very rare prints illustrating both the male & female digestion process, as well as the function function of sexual organs [pp.143-145]. A large broadside set of color woodcut prints depict little men/women [men for the male print; women for the female print] laboring to move the food through the digestion process; fanning for breath- ing, presses for extraction of urine and other quaint inter- pretations of the process brought down to the level of und- erstanding for common un-educated peasants. These examples of how men and women's bodily functions differ, done in a graphic manner is quite rare. They were done by the artist UTAGAWA, Yoshitsuna [Ittosai], and are known as: BOJI YOJYO KAGAMI:A MODEL OF WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE & RULES OF SEXUAL LIFE An Anatomical Medical Chart Depicting the "Technology" of Food Digestion & Function of Sexual Organs [the female print]; and its companion: INSHOKU YOJYO KAGAMI: A MODEL OF MEN'S HEALTH CARE & RULES OF SEXUAL LIFE: An Anatomical Medical Chart Depicting the "Technology" of Food Digestion & function of Sexual Organs [for the male print]. They were done ca. 1848, and are illustrated on our website. Interest- ed persons may contact as of this writing we do have a set of these exact prints in our collection. * AUTHORS, TRANSLATORS: The chief author was Sen Nakahara; Yoshihisa Shindo and Kuninori Homma were both co-authors and translators. First issued in Japanese under title: UKIYO-E NI MIRU SHIKA FUZO- KO SHI, Tokyo 1978. Beautifully executed, well written. * RARIETY OF JAPANESE DENTAL BOOKS: Very little has been written in English on this subject and period of Japanese dentistry. A unique pictorial history of dentistry in Japan from feudal times. Published in a very small English language edition of [Five Hundred] copies, now a RARE book. An exceptionally valuable reference for collec- tors & curators of medical, dental & anatomical collections. * Images displayed may not be the actual copy in stock for sale at any given time; if you want to see the exact image of the book or edition in stock, please request this by email and an image will be returned to you by attachment. * * * * BUY WITH .

1980 - 1 page on personal letterhead, 7.75 x 5.75 inches, no place, September 30, 1980 -- thanking the recipient for sending a book and discussing her busy schedule, in full: "I am just back from New Hampshire and found an envelope from you. Thank you so much for sending me the book; I shall look forward to reading it. I am struggling to straighten out all the correspondence and mess and cast the play which begins rehearsals in six weeks. Will call you when I have a free moment. Yes, it was great fun working with Hank and with Jane." Hepburn added a handwritten postscript: "He's a very good actor - + a great part for him - see you soon. Kate."         AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED (ALS) to Gahan Wilson, dated 5 November 1980, two pages on two sheets of letter-sized bond.

      - Written with a red felt-tip marker in a cursive/printing hybrid (due to his typewriter being "sick. Took it to the vet and am still waiting reports on the surgery: I know its platen was removed and I'm afraid it also had a miscarriage.") The letter is prime Bloch, displaying his impish sense of humor in every paragraph. He regrets that Wilson was unable to get to the 1980 World Fantasy Convention (held in Baltimore) at which Bloch was Master of Ceremonies. "I'd not met Jack Vance [the Guest of Honor] before -- a very nice guy -- plays the banjo and kazoo simultaneously and knows all the obscure songs of the 'Twenties, including one of my favorites, 'Lena Was the Queen of Palesteena.'" Concludes with some chafing of Wilson on the news that he is writing a novel. "I don't draw on lavatory walls, you know. Shouldn't we have some kind of detente?" Amusing and affectionate in equal proportion. Old fold creases, a bit of irregular tanning (due to offsetting or sunning, probably) to one edge, very good. (#140957)

        WATER'S EDGE

Lyme, CT: Callaway Editions, 1980. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Lyme, CT: Callaway Editions, 1980. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 76 pages. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs, presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 216 numbered and signed copies. Please note: This copy is "Out of Series" (the space intended for the limitation number was left blank) , does not come with the print, but is signed by Harry Callahan. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition, which is inferior to it in terms of production values. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Harry Callahan, Nicholas Callaway, Anne Kennedy, and Katy Homans: Oversize-volume format. Hand-crafted beige linen cloth boards. Photographs by Harry Callahan. Poem by A. R. Ammons. Matching hand-crafted clamshell box. Printed on 100 LB Quintessence Paper using 300-line offset lithography by Acme Printing Company in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is amazing in its purity, rich tonal range, and warmth. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Harry Callahan's "Water's Edge". His greatest body of work. "From 1941 to the 1970's, from the shores of Lake Michigan to the dunes of Cape Cod, Callahan continually returned to his theme. First influenced by Ansel Adams and later nourished by the encouragement of Moholy-Nagy and Edward Steichen, Callahan's 'Beach Series' reveals a strength and clarity of design and form that are uniquely his own. With a reverential respect toward place, he uses the elements of the landscape - the ethereal light of the shore, the serene expanses of space, the forms shaped by ocean and wind - to create an extraordinary series of photographs, contemporary yet timeless. A. R. Ammons' poem, 'Corsons Inlet', evokes a sense of the beach complementary to Callahan's own vision, and in the Afterword, Callahan himself writes of the significance of the 'Beach Series' in his photographic oeuvre" (Publisher's blurb) . A masterpiece. An absolute "must-have" title for Harry Callahan collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Harry Callahan. Please note: It is "Out of Series", with the space intended for the limitation number left blank, and without the print. It nevertheless remains eminently collectible because of the book itself, its exquisite production, and Callahan's signature. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Beware: Far too many copies available online, particularly of the regular trade edition, have major flaws yet command incredible prices whereas the Limited Edition commands at least $5000 because of the print. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 48 plates, 2 gatefolds. Harry Callahan's "Water's Edge" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. .

Antidotarium ex multis, optimisque authoribus collectum, castigatum et accurate digestum.Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1559. 8vo. With Valgrisi's woodcut device on the title-page, and 3 woodcut pictorial initials. 17th-century(?) olive limp vellum, remains of 2 pair of thong ties.

EDIT 16 1980 (5 copies); USTC 803972 (same 5 copies); not in Schelenz, Gesch. Pharmazie. First edition, second issue, of an anonymous pharmacopoeia or book of recipes for "antidotes" to various ailments. Although the compiler is not named and it was printed and published in Venice, the note to the reader comes from the Mantua doctors and hawkers of aromatic medicines. The first section is devoted to compound medicines and the second section to "simples". Although we have not had the opportunity to compare the 1558 and 1559 issues side by side, the descriptions indicate no difference except the date, with even the same EDIT16 fingerprint, so they are very likely the same edition. Some descriptions omit the words "Ex Officina Erasmiana" in the imprint, but they do appear in both issues. It is a lovely little piece of book production, set in Robert Granjon's first italic of 1543, which Paulus Manutius had introduced to Venice in 1555. With a few small holes, slightly affecting a letter or two in 4 leaves, a bit of red wax or pigment on the surface of 1 leaf and some faint marginal water stains, but otherwise in very good condition. There is a tear and some wear in the vellum, one vellum tape is broken and the ties are mostly gone, but still in good condition. A lovely little pharmacopoeia, compiled in Mantua.

        Cuerpo correccional [Correctional Body]

[Santiago]: Francisco Zegers (V.I.S.U.A.L.), (1980) - 8vo (266 × 182 mm), pp.124. 29 black-and-white photographs and 48 video stills. Text by Nelly Richard. Photography by Jaime Villaseca, Francisco Zegers, and Carlos Altamirano. Design by Carlos Leppe, Nelly Richard, and Carlos Altamirano. Black-and-white photo-illustrated wrappers with flaps; reading crease and wear to spine, leaning slightly, light wear to edges, foot of spine bumped. A very good copy. First edition. Cuerpo correccional is a reexamination of the work of 1970s Chilean artist Carlos Leppe, with photographs and video stills of his performances and installations which were primarily concerned with sexual and identity issues. It was published by Francisco Zeger, who at the time of publication was employing Leppe at his advertising agency, and was ‘a genuine provocation at the time because of its solid binding, firm spine, varnished covers, well-reproduced photos on proper paper, and printing-press typeface, whose name is given on the colophon page, instead of typewriter script. The Chilean art scene has sometimes been described in terms of its makeshift publications, in some cases no more sophisticated than stencils, what Justo Pastor Mellado has called “the report-to-the-assembly aesthetic”: a few typewritten pages stapled together or joined with a paperclip. The artist’s greater or lesser adherence to this report model mattered a great deal, especially in political terms. Cuerpo correccional marked a rupture with the photocopies, ring binders, and bristol board of many artists’ books of those years. (Latin American Photobooks 139).         [Flyers]: 1980s-1990s California Heavy and Glam Metal Concert Flyers

California. 1980-1990. A collection of 180 flyers, business cards, and handbills promoting California heavy and glam metal bands from the 1980s-1990s featuring acts such as Funhouse, Nuclear Valdez, L.A. Guns, New Haven, The Cherry Bombz, Hanoi Rocks, The Lords of the New Church, Warbride, and others. The flyers are all printed sheets in sizes ranging between 3" x 3.5" and 16.5" x 11" in various colors with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. Items are mostly near fine, some with small chips and tears from being mounted on bulletin boards and posts. The flyers are printed with pictures of the glam and heavy metal bands in various poses wearing tight pants, open shirts, and with the signature big hair and makeup favored at the time. Small drawings of flowers, hearts, caricatures, and typographical band names festoon the edges of the colorful flyers. One flyer features the L.A. Guns posing for the camera with "Fiendish is the word for it!" written off to the side. The L.A. Guns were one of California's most famous glam metal bands during the 1980s-1990s. Quotes such as "HOT HOT HOT", "Good looks, a great grind, and a very definitive crunch", and "New! Young! & Erotic!" are printed on several flyers along with the typical "Must see!" and "Hottest new band". Sexually charged illustrations and poses were the staple for any heavy or glam metal band from the 1980s-1990s. Many of the flyers and business cards feature provocatively drawn women like the cards for the Cabaret Night Club. A woman with a large top hat, long legs, and uncovered chest leans against a chair with a pistol in right hand. The words "Sophisticated Rock & Roll -- and other sh*t" is printed on the reverse side of the business card. An extensive and vibrant look back on the designs and pictures used for heavy and glam metal bands during the period of the 1980s through the 1990s. .

Worcester: Metacom Press. 1980. First. First edition, hardcover issue. Quarter red calf and papercovered boards with printed title label. Calf a little rubbed else very near fine. Copy letter W of 26 lettered copies Signed by the author. A short story originally published in The New Yorker. The first volume in the Metacom Limited Editions series. A note on the printing laid in. Additionally Inscribed by the author: "for Herb, All best wishes, John Updike." "Updike" is crossed out, presumably to indicate their friendship and close association. One more in a long series - a bit of Beckett and a bit of Disney. Cheers, John." Lord John founder and publisher Herb Yellin was the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. .

[Flyers]: 1980s-1990s California Metal Concert Flyers

California. 1980-1990. A collection of 44 flyers, business cards, and handbills promoting Los Angeles metal venues and bands from the 1980s-1990s featuring acts such as Sepultura, Gwar, Saint Vitus, Abraxas, Slayer, Wool, Ulysses Siren, Raw Flower, Resistant Militia, Papa Wheelie, and others. The flyers are all printed on paper sheets of various colors sized, 2.5" x 2" to 14" x 8.5", in black ink with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. All items have slight edgewear and soiling else near fine or better.Decorated with various band's typographical names and designs, the posters illustrate tombs, zombies, devils, witches, and the band members. One flyer's illustration is of a sacrilegious nun forcing a cross into her arm; this flyer is for the band Wool. Wool was based out of California and mixed the sounds of hard rock, punk, and psychedelia making them versatile in the bands they accompanied. Another more versatile band was Ulysses Siren which formed in 1983 in South San Francisco. Two years after forming the band's demo Terrorist Attack was featured on KUSF radio and at the Record Vault for becoming the number 1 selling underground demo. Saint Vitus was another widely popular underground band from the Los Angeles area. Forming in 1979, the band has been credited as one of the first bands of the doom metal genre. Slayer formed in 1981 as a thrash metal band from California. In 1986 the band rose to fame and has been labeled as one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands. Their lyrics and album art included themes of necrophilia, anti-religion, war, Satanism, and murder. This often led to bans on Slayer's music and criticism from parents and religious groups. The venues that housed these bands were known for their underground shows. The Jabberjaw was a coffee house and music venue in Los Angeles, California. It featured underground all-ages rock, metal, and punk shows. Jabberjaw released four, seven inch vinyl EPs which were later compiled on CD in 1994 and again in 1996. Another venue was the Reseda Country Club. In the 1950s the club started off as a drug store and later became a music venue in 1979 under Chuck Landis. The club closed in the late 1990s and today is the site of a Spanish-language Christian church.A fascinating collection of metal flyers from California featuring popular and underground acts during the 1980s-1990s. .

An American Werewolf in London (Original screenplay for the 1981 film)

London: Lycanthrope Films Ltd, 1980. Shooting script for the 1981 film. From the collection of still photographer Bob Willoughby, with his ownership name in holograph blue ink on the distribution page. Bob Willoughby (1927-2009) studied with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, worked as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar," and as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s (this was one of his final films), though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. Landis was fresh from of his previous year's production, "The Blues Brothers," when he directed this Academy Award-winning (Best Makeup) horror thriller, about two Americans, David and Jack (Naughton and Dunne) ,backpacking in England. One night they are attacked by a mysterious creature, a werewolf, leaving Jack dead and David wounded. Soon David's nightmares depicting his dead friend warning that he'll soon become a werewolf begin to get the better of him, and arouse suspicion amongst the locals. The film also contains one of cinema's best man-to-monster transformations, similar in effect to Joe Dante's "The Howling" (also 1981), and expands on a plot that began in 1941 with George Waggner's "The Wolf Man." Dark green studio wrappers with a die-cut title window in the British style. Distribution page present, with Bob Willoughby's signature in holograph blue ink. Title page present, dated December 9, 1980, noted as SHOOTING SCRIPT, with credits for screenwriter Landis. 103 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with pink revision pages, dated Jan. 20, 1981.         [Flyers]: 1980s-1990s California Punk Concert Flyers

San Francisco/Los Angeles. 1980-1990. A collection of 80 flyers, business cards, and handbills promoting Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay area punk venues and bands from the 1980s-1990s featuring acts such as Flipper, Potential Threat, Circle Jerks, The Zeros, N.O.F.X., The Leaving Train, and others. The flyers are all printed on paper sheets of various colors sized 3.5" x 4" to 13" x 19", in black ink with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. All items are near fine with tape remnants and some chips and tears from being mounted on bulletin boards and posts with light soiling. Decorated with drawings of monsters, airplanes, portraits, and close ups of body parts these flyers advertised concerts for California venues featuring local and famous punk bands. California was exploding with new punk bands from every block and corner. Small local bands became famous and progressed to influence the rest of the punk scene for later generations. Flipper, being one of the most popular bands during this time, formed in San Francisco in 1979. Flipper was notorious for their slowed-down sound that interested some but infuriated other in the scene. Noted as the forerunner to sludge metal, both Kurt Cobain from Nirvana and Eric Avery from Jane's Addiction said that Flipper influenced their music. Another band formed out of the San Francisco Bay Area was Potential Threat. The band began in 1986 and was known for their in-your-face approach to music that so many of the punk bands implemented at this time. Circle Jerks were another small band that took off quickly and became a huge success. Formed in 1979 in Los Angeles, Circle Jerks within a year of forming became one of several California punk bands to be immortalized in the documentary The Decline of Western Civilization. They influenced several artists and have been featured in a couple movies since. The Zeros were one of the most popular punk bands during the 1980s. Forming in 1976, the band's first major gig was in 1977 with The Germs playing at The Orpheum Theater. The concerts of the band often led to riots, fights, and general debauchery. They also play an entire set consisting of eight replays of "Beat Your Heart Out" in San Francisco. Though the bands was successful, it broke apart in the 1980s and has been doing small reunion tours since. Several of the venues listed on the flyers were known to feature punk, metal, goth, and many other types of music. These venues would feature Bay Area punk bands giving the local talents some limelight. The Stone opened in the 1980s and was linked to the Keystone Berkeley and Keystone Palo Alto. The venue was large enough to have 700 people at one time, sold only hard liquor at the bar, and attracted an audience with bigger hair, fishnets, and makeup. On Broadway Theater was another popular punk venue in San Francisco. It was the upstairs portion to the Mabuhay Gardens (The Mab) which featured different acts and styles of music. The venue attracted local bands and pushed some to fame during the 1980s. The Mab and On Broadway Theater closed in 1986 but has been bought and re-opened several times and different clubs for the changing scenes. A vibrant look back on the popular and local punk bands of the 1980s-1990s. .

        Dean Rusk

Totowa: Cooper Square Publishers 1980 - 8vo., blue cloth lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket, with slight edge-wear. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed: "For Judge Philip C. Jessup, with thanks for your help, Warren L. Cohen," on the front endpaper; accompanied by a letter from Cohen presenting Jessup with the volume and thanking him "for your insights which were the most valuable offered by any of those to whom I spoke of him." ---- The recipient, Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then- Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. Cohen discussed Jessup's "alter ego" relationship with Acheson and role in state affairs often in "Dean Rusk," and thanked him in the Acknowledgments. A compelling presentation copy.
