Collection of approximately 30 typed and autograph letters and postcards from Helen G. Coates, Bernstein's first piano teacher and personal assistant for most of his adult life, to Madeline Hsu (Forte), pianist and wife of musicologist Allen Forte

"Bernstein';s legacy looms large in each area that he worked. West Side Story remains his most important work, but his mastery of the Broadway idiom is just as clear in his other shows. Mass remains a powerful piece and is finding new audiences. Bernstein';s concert music includes many enduring works, especially Chichester Psalms, and orchestral pieces based upon his popular shows also continue to be programmed. His fame as a conductor has barely diminished since his death, and many of his recordings remain critically and commercially popular. That he will also be remembered as one of America';s most important musical educators seems certain." Paul R. Laird and David Schiff in Grove online Coates was Bernstein's first piano teacher of note; he began his studies with her at the age of 14.. The letters, written ca. 1980-85, are particularly interesting for Coates's comments on the music and activities of Bernstein during the period. The correspondence also discusses the legacy of the pianist and teacher Rosina Lhevinne as well as other musical and personal matters. Included are 3 letters from Lhevinne's student and video-biographer Salome Arkatov.

        A Confederacy of Dunces

Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press. 1980. Signed by Walker Percy. A posthumously published novel that was the first work of fiction published by the LSU Press: and which had a very small first printing (reportedly 2500 copies), Initially the book was rejected by dozens of publishers and the author committed suicide in 1969. Years later the author's mother brought the manuscript to Walker Percy, insisting that he read it. Percy overcame his initial hesitations and championed the book, arranging for its publication and contributing an introduction. Excellent reviews and word of mouth led to its becoming a best-seller, and it won the Pulitzer Prize. One tiny foredge spot, else a fine and tight copy (the boards tend to splay on most copies) in a very near fine, first issue dust jacket with only trace wear to the corners and a hint of rubbing near the spine crown. A high spot of American fiction over the last half century. First Edition. Hardcover.

        Dark Forces

NY: Viking. 1980. A collection of previously unpublished stories of suspense and horror, edited by Kirby McCauley. A landmark volume in the history of the Modern Horror genre, assembled as Stephen King was just becoming a bestselling author after five novels that would eventually be seen as classics but at the time had sold little and garnered limited serious critical attention. This anthology attempted to put the new horror writers, including King, into a context and tradition that was much broader than the genre, and more readily considered to be "literary." Thus, in addition to King and such upcoming young writers as T.E.D. Klein, Gene Wolfe and Ramsey Campbell, the collection includes such mainstream writers as Joyce Carol Oates, Davis Grubb and Isaac Bashevis Singer, and such well-established genre writers as Ray Bradbury, Theodore Sturgeon and Robert Bloch. This copy is signed or inscribed by fifteen writers, including King, Bloch, Richard Matheson, Joe Haldeman, Gahan Wilson, Campbell, Wolfe, Richard Christian Matheson, Dennis Etchison, Karl Edward Wagner, Manly Wade Wellman, Edward Bryant, Charles L. Grant, and the editor, Kirby McCauley. With the ownership signature of fellow horror writer Stanley Wiater, and with Wiater's Gahan Wilson-designed bookplate on the verso of the front flyleaf. Stephen King's contribution is "The Mist," a 130+ page novella that was nominated for a World Fantasy Award and a Locus Award. It was collected five years later in Skeleton Crew. Light ink stains throughout the first several pages of the introduction, not obscuring any text; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear to the corners. A unique copy of a seminal collection that helped define the genre. First Edition. Hardcover.

INTO THE WOODS (Inscribed By Stephen Sondheim)

New York: Crown, 1980. Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine, & Hudson Talbott. INTO THE WOODS. New York: Crown, (1988). First Edition (so stated). A FINE copy of this deluxe edition in a FINE dust jacket (fresh as new, but two tiny chips to tip of spine and one tiny closed tear on the back panel...all very minor). INSCRIBED BY SONDHEIM on the verso of the front free endpaper to, presumably, either a friend or a fan. This unusual independent project conceived by Sondheim and Lapine and illustrated by Hudson Talbott (who has done work for the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Opera, The Metropolitan Museum) is a wonderful adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's INTO THE WOODS Broadway Musical which won three Tonys (among dozens of awards) and was recently adapted into film starring Meryl Streep. This is only the second signed/inscribed copy of this particular Sondheim scarcity that we have seen. It's a much larger and more attractive book that the published libretto of the same year (1988) and a must for any Sondheim collector. We've photographed only one of the illustrations but the book has dozen of equally amazing images. . Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Hudson Talbott.

The Dead Zone -- UNCORRECTED PROOF, SIGNED

New York: Signet, 1980 - Advance copy (uncorrected proof) of the first paperback edition. Signed by the author. A supernatural adventure tale, and King's first #1 bestseller, both on the hardcover and the paperback lists. Memorably filmed by David Cronenberg. At least one internet blogger has suggested that King was predicting the rise of Donald Trump when he created the character of the dangerously demagogic Greg Stillson: "Hot dogs for every man, woman, and child in America!" A rare state of the book, doubtless missing from your collection. A very rare state. Pages browned, else fine in wrappers.

LUCIEN CLERGUE: MATADOR ("BULLFIGHTER") : THE EXHIBITION POSTER - Rare Fine Copy of The Framed Vintage Exhibition Poster: Signed by Lucien Clergue - ONLY COPY ONLINE

Paris, France: Self-Published, 1980 - 1st Printing. Signed. 1 pages. Published in 1980. Rare Lucien Clergue collectible item. A framed poster of his classic "Matador" Exhibition Poster (circa 1980), signed by Lucien Clergue. There is no ISBN. The Poster is vintage, and is now rare. Poster size is 17 X 23 inches. Framed size is 18 X 24 inches. The frame is on custom-made, black solid wood with Plexi-Glass, done by a leading Chicago photography gallery. Printed on archival, thick coated stock paper in Paris, France to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Lucien Clergue's "Matador". An exquisite reproduction of his image of a Spanish "torero"/bullfighter. It is brilliantly cropped: We do not see his face, as is usually the case, only his torso and famously elaborate accoutrement: Costume, red cape, and shiny sword, in a balletic pose. The elegant image is in contrast with Clergue's sequence in "Toros Muertos" (1966), where he depicts the bull as hapless victim (rather than something ferocious or fearful) : The "toro" is shown in visible pain, dying a slow, agonizing death, dead, and finally, a carcass hanging in an abattoir. For the philosophical Clergue, the bullfighter, the bull, and their duel represent the struggle called life itself: "In the concept of the universe, life and death are on the same level, on the same line, in the same hour. Still, between the two, there is so much to be seen and done: Let us try to discover the secret world of our nature" (Lucien Clergue). This "secret world" shows Man as capable of less-than-human, "animal" barbarism and Animal as his human-like victim. "The Monet of the camera" (Pablo Picasso). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Lucien Clergue collectors. This copy of the "Matador" Exhibition Poster is magnificently signed in black pen-marker directly underneath the image by Lucien Clergue. Clergue's signature on this poster is vintage, NOT contemporary, and it's the best we have ever seen: Big, bold, and beautiful. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Exhibition Poster available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Lucien Clergue vintage prints command thousands of dollars from galleries and online. This vintage poster is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lucien Clergue's "Toros Muertos" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of our time. A fine collectible poster.
