Caphtor / Keftiu. A new investigation.

Leiden, E.J.Brill, 1980. 227 S. Mit 10 Textfiguren und 2 Karten (Eastern Mediterranean & Cyprus). 25,5 x 17,5 cm. Orig.-Pappband. Acta Theologica Danica, Vol.XIV // Introduction: \"In the Old Testament it is said of Israel\'s archenemies, the Philistines, that they came from Caphtor: \'Did I not bring Israel out of the land of Egypt? And the Philistines from Caphtor...?\'. The Israelites knew that the Philistines were immigrants in the land of Canaan like themselves, and they knew their land of origin. This immigration took place in the early part of the 12th cent.B.C., and already in Old Testament days the identity and geographical position of Caphtor were forgotten. Ezekiel XXV, 15-17 implies that the Philistines came from Crete, but this passage can be proved to be a grabled version of Jeremiah XLVII,4, later interpolated in the text of Ezekiel. It only shows that at the time of this interpolation, the 6th cent.B.C. or later, all actual knowledge of Caphtor had been lost. In modern scholarship the problem acquired a renewed importance when Champollion found the Philistines mentioned in Egyptian inscriptions from the XXth dynasty. At the same time he found paintings in Egyptian tombs, showing foreigners from Keftiu or Kefto among other nationalities. This place was promptly maintained to be the same as Caphtor, later found in the form Kaptara in Semitic inscriptions. Since then various proposals for the identification of Caphtor/Kaptara/Keftiu have been put forward (e.G. Crete, Cyprus, Cilicia, Northern Syria), but [..]. Finally a word about the chronological framework of the present study. As already mentioned the oldest text possibly dates from ca.2300 B.C. and the youngest from ca.300 A.D. or somewhat later [..]\" /// Rücken leicht verblasst.         Flatland. A Romance of Many Dimensions

Arion Press, San Francisco 1980 - Tall quarto. Unpaginated. One of 275 copies signed by Andrew Hoyem, the printer and by Ray Bradbury, who wrote the introduction. A strikingly visual presentation of this science fiction classic. Illustrated with die cut-outs of geometric shapes, all of which have been handcolored. Bound concertina-style in silk-screened aluminum, which allows the book to be opened up to a 33-foot panorama. It can also be read in the conventional manner by opening the front cover, reading to the end, turning the book over and finishing at the front cover. Book is protected by an aluminum frame, which unlatches to let the book slide out. Top and bottom edges black. A fine copy overall. A successful tour-de-force and an excellent example of the nontraditional book so popular in the last decade. Instructions sheet laid in. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Plochere Color System. A Guide to Color and Color Harmony. To be used in Conjunction with the 1248 Color Tone Cards and 200 Gray tone Included in this Set

Los Angeles: Gladys and Gustave Plochere, 1980. Later printing. Box. near fine. Black leatherette box (5 x 18 x 6") with gilt lettering on cover, imitation leather handle, draw bolt latches and 1448 Color Tone Cards (3 x 5") with 116pp. spiral-bound guide with white lettering on cover warps, and Light Reflectance Guide housed in compartment of box. The book, 1992 revised edition by Eric Lutz, contains an introduction, abstracts on color terms, hue designation, color groupings, color harmonies, pigments, color names and a 24-hue color circle on card stock and an index of color names at rear. "The instructive chapters have been condensed and simplified, and the color information has been reformatted. Hue paint and to the advent of computerized color matching, mixing formulas for the colors in the Plochere Color System have also been eliminated?. While the actual colors in the system have not been changed in any way, slight adjustments have been made to the hue designations, to the positioning of the hues on the color circle, and to the resultant color harmonies. The current color circle is no longer based directly on the Ostwald circle. While it retains some of the characteristics of the Ostwald arrangement (for example, a higher proportion of greens), it corresponds more closely with the conventional tripartite arrangement of yellow, magenta, and cyan." The 1448 Color Tone Cards in leatherette box are compartmentalized by dividers with printed numbers 1-1248 and G1-200 for additional 200 grays. All color cards with stamped numbers on verso. Complete. Box and book in near fine condition.

One more in a long series - a bit of Beckett and a bit of Disney. Cheers, John." Lord John founder and publisher Herb Yellin was the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. .

[Collection of Five Early Holograph Set-Lists and Flyers]

Minneapolis, (1980-81). Five holograph setlists over seven leaves, from 11” x 8.5” to 22” x 8.5”. All penned or penciled to versos of various Minneapolis music flyers. Two in Bob Mould's hand, remainder possibly in second hand (either Hart or Norton), but likely Mould's as well. Generally very good with expected folds, creasing, and wear. One setlist on oversized flyer (1/12/81) cleanly split down middle between sets one and two, likely at time of composition. This setlist also shows mild running to some of the ink (sweat?), not effecting legibility. Another (12/30/80) includes only second set (“2” prominently noted and circled at top). All lists additionally penciled by original collector, who noted locations and dates of each gig in a tiny, unobtrusive hand. Dates included: 11/22/80 (at 7th St. Entry, on verso of undated Sam's promo flyer), 12/13/80 (7th St. Entry, second set only, on verso of different undated Sam's promo flyer), 1/12/81 (7th St. Entry, on verso of Sam's flyer advertising Jan. 22nd, 1981 show by Nona Hendrix and Zero Cool), 2/3/81 (7th St. Entry, on verso of January 1981 calendar from same, which lists the 1/12 show above, as well as two shows by the Replacements), and 8/27/81 (7th St. Entry, on versos of two different Sam's flyers — one a Sept. 1981 calendar listing shows from H?sker D?, The Replacements, and the db's, the second for a Sept. 17th Screaming Urge gig). Collection of early setlists from seminal band H?sker D? for shows in their hometown of Minneapolis, all predating the release of their debut album LAND SPEED RECORD, and all but one predating its recording. More so than for any of their contemporaries, the setlist was an integral part of H?sker D?, not only because of the band's legendary live shows and incessant touring, but because even from an early date H?sker had an extensive catalogue. By the time of the first gig represented here, the band had more than 50 songs to their name. And throughout their career the band experimented with live performances arguably more than any of the other prominent punk bands of the period. Husker was known for performing multiple sets, rotating songs, and blistering performances that blurred the lines between the beginnings and ends of their often notoriously brief songs. Indeed, Husker's first album was a live LP. The best H?sker resource remains the website H?sker D? Database (http://www.thirdav.com/hddb.shtml), as complete a record of the band as exists anywhere. None of these sets, however, are recorded (indeed it appears that almost all the known setlists from this period originate with bootleg recordings), and the final show here represented is not recorded in the database at all. Therefore, a significant primary record of one of the most influential bands to emerge from 1980s alternative music, coupled with flyers that offer a small portrait of the burgeoning Twin Cities “college rock” scene.

Caphtor / Keftiu. A new investigation.

Leiden, E.J.Brill, 1980 - 227 S. Mit 10 Textfiguren und 2 Karten (Eastern Mediterranean & Cyprus). Acta Theologica Danica, Vol.XIV // Introduction: "In the Old Testament it is said of Israel`s archenemies, the Philistines, that they came from Caphtor: `Did I not bring Israel out of the land of Egypt? And the Philistines from Caphtor.?`. Crete, Cyprus, Cilicia, Northern Syria), but [.]. Finally a word about the chronological framework of the present study. As already mentioned the oldest text possibly dates from ca.2300 B.C. and the youngest from ca.300 A.D. or somewhat later [.]" /// Rücken leicht verblasst.         THEY FELL IN THE BATTLE - A Roll of Honour of the Battle of Britain, 10 July - 31 October 1940

Royal Air Force Museum Printed by Rampant Lions Press, Hendon 1980 - Autograph; [5], 50, [2] leaves pages; Clean and tight in original binding of full blue morocco with gilt lettering at spine and gilt cross on front board; sunned at spine, otherwise Near Fine in very good blue buckram-covered slipcase with a lining of watered silk (slipcase now sunned at edges). Foreword written and SIGNED by His Royal Highness PRINCE PHILIP Duke of Marlborough. This is No. 44 of an edition limited to only 80 copies, signed by Prince Philip (as Marshal of the Royal Air Force). [5], 50, [2] leaves; 39cm. Text printed in Air Force blue on rectos of leaves only, title in blue and gold, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut, folio. (Quoting from the colophon): "The idea for this edition came from Dr. John Tanner CBE Founding Director of the Royal Air Force Museum who gave editorial guidance throughout. There were only eighty copies printed designed and printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge on Arches Velin mould-made paper. The handsome binding is by W. T. Morrell of Covent Garden, in specially dyed goatskin with spine lettering designed by the printer. Production was supervised throughout by Nottingham Court Press." Commissioned to commemorate the 40th anniversary of The Battle of Britain, the Roll has been compiled by Group Captain Tom Gleave and Squadron Leader F.E. Dymond, resident historian of the Royal Air Force Museum, and includes research completed to 1 January 1980. The great Winston Churchill, in one of his finest sentences, explained and defined the Battle of Britain for all time: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." (Churchill's words are given a place of honor as the epigraph of this volume.) The names so handsomely recorded in this book are exactly and precisely those Churchill memorably denoted as the "few." The "Roll of Honour" with the simple, yet intensely elegant, register of the names of the Battle of Britain's fallen, is at its heart, a collection of inscriptions. And the extraordinarily fine gilt letters on the magnificent crushed levant morocco binding by W. T. Morrell were, of course, designed by Will Carter. This Rampant Lions Press production constitutes a remarkable memorial to the 435 Pilots and 63 crew members who, in death, made up Churchill's "few." It was offered to even fewer -- [80 copies, issued at £1000. It is known that there were copies, perhaps a dozen, which did not receive this expensive full niger goatskin binding, but were issued as unbound sheets]. This is copy number 44 of 80, with the special binding unworn, albeit now light-struck along the spine. A Beautifully produced and very heavy book; international and priority shipping can be arranged for additional charge. Not just another fine press book -- "They Fell in Battle" was clearly a project of the highest personal significance to Will Carter, founder of the Rampant Lions Press. Carter [1912-2001] interrupted a long life devoted to the design and printing of fine books and the artful forming of letters for significant and dangerous service in the Royal Navy in the South Atlantic and the Eastern Mediterranean, during the Second World War. Carter commanded a converted Greek sailing ship tasked with transporting Allied undercover agents around occupied Greece. After his demobilisation in 1946, Carter returned to a position with the printing firm of Heffers in Cambridge, where he had been promoted to "Designer" in 1934, and printed his Rampant Lions projects in his spare time. In 1949 he ceased outside work for others and became full-time proprietor of the Rampant Lions Press, fulfilling a desire dating back to his earliest years. Will Carter had nearly been born into the book business; he was the younger brother (by seven years) of the bookseller, biblio-historian and Housman scholar John Carter, who with Graham Pollard exposed the T. J. Wise/Buxton Forman forgeries of 19th-century pamphlets. Will Carter's interest in printing began on a fateful visit [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Oak and the Calf: Memoirs of a Literary Life

Franklin Library, Franklin Center, PA, 1980. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine. "In this autobiographical work, Solzhenitsyn tells of his ten-year war to outwit Russia's rulers and get his works published in his own country." [Pub. Info] "These memoirs are the author's account of his struggles with the Soviet regime through the 1960s and into the 1970s... The narrative has all the tension and verve of a good novel, and numerous critics say it rivals his novels in its literary attainment..." [wsj] Imagine a weak little calf butting his head against a huge, immovable oak tree, [naively] thinking he could knock it down. In Alexander Solzhenitsyn's memoirs... the Soviet regime was the oak, Solzhenitsyn was the calf, and the book describes their battle to the death." [wsj] "The Nobel Prize in Literature 1970 was awarded to Alexandr Solzhenitsyn 'for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature."
