Flatland - A Romance of Many Dimensions With an introduction by Ray Bradbury - signed by Ray Bradbury Illustrated by Andrew Hoyem - signed by Andrew Hoyem

San Francisco: The Arion Press 1980 - San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1980. Tall 4to, original aluminum covers stamped in black, contained in an aluminum frame with hinged top with clasp, lettered in black along one edge. 56 accordion-style folded panels, comprising 112 pp. 14 line illustrations and 10 mounted die-cut panels by the printer, Andrew Hoyem, after designs by the author. Format: 14" x 7" inches (closed); 14" x 33' (open), accordion-fold of 56 folded panels. Watercolors added by hand. The type is Univers, composed in Monotype, then reset by hand. The paper is T. H. Saunders hot-press finish, mould-made. Bound in aluminum covers, in a hinged and clasped aluminum container. Numbered and signed by Bradbury. Strictly limited edition of 275 numbered copies. A Fine copy of this spectacular production. Very Scarce. A satire about a two-dimensional world vexed by single- and multi-dimensionality that has been continuously in print since first published in 1884. This tale about the inhabitants of a two-dimensional world and their difficulties with one-dimensional and three-dimensional beings has never gone out of print since it was first printed in 1886. "The great classic of dimensional thought, this has been a highly influential work in science-fiction. It is very well written, amusing, logical, and easy to follow. It is still much the best of the various books that have explored life in worlds of fewer dimensions than ours" (Bleiler, Science-Fiction. The Early Years, 2). This is perhaps technically the most elaborate or complicated of all the Arion Press books to date; it was the seventh production of Hoyem's Arion Press and has long been one of the most difficult, though less costly than the livres d'artiste, to acquire. The text pages and illustration units measure 7 x 14 inches and are joined accordion-style to a length of 33 feet printed on each side, making a 66-foot long book. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Hand-made SIGNED Greetings Card, designed for the Harrison family.

No place [Henley], n.d. [1980s]., 1980. George Harrison's own Christmas card, given to his groundskeeper. Dimensions 7 x 5.1 inches approx. Portrait format. Privately manufactured from card, foil, paper and metallic paint with a ribbon and tassle. Chiffon material soldered beneath a die-cut 'sun' motif with a hand-written seasonal message in gold ink in a Gothic calligraphic style on textured red paper pasted within the card. George has inscribed below, in blue ballpoint; 'To Maurice, Sylvia and Family / love from George'. Additionally signed below by Olivia and Dhani Harrison. Fine condition. The solar card design clearly refers to Harrison's spiritual view of 'the sun'; the worship of the sun as a deity is an important part of Hindu religion, to which George had converted and to which he introduced his fellow Beatles; he practised meditation, met several gurus, embraced traditional Indian music and his ashes were scattered in the Ganges in a private ceremony according to his Hindu beliefs. In 1969, Harrison wrote 'Here Comes the Sun', one of his best-known tracks, which reflected the continued influence of Indian classical music on his songwriting. Provenance; Ex Christies, Rock and Pop, no.9919 lot 156.

Metacom Press, Worcester 1980 - First edition, hardcover issue. Quarter red calf and papercovered boards with printed title label. Calf a little rubbed else very near fine. Copy letter W of 26 lettered copies Signed by the author. A short story originally published in *The New Yorker*. The first volume in the Metacom Limited Editions series. A note on the printing laid in. Additionally Inscribed by the author: "for Herb, All best wishes, John Updike." "Updike" is crossed out, presumably to indicate their friendship and close association. One more in a long series - a bit of Beckett and a bit of Disney. Cheers, John." Lord John founder and publisher Herb Yellin was the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association.         [Flyers]: 1980-1990 Counter Culture and Event Flyers in California Area

California. 1980-1990. A collection of 134 flyers, business cards, and handbills for 1980s-1990s stores, venues, events, and local parties throughout California. The handbills and flyers are all printed on paper sheets of various colors sized, 2.5" x 2" to 16" x 11", in black and colored ink with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. All items have slight edgewear and soiling else near fine or better. The archives features various artwork such as skulls, women, photographs, devils, coffee and beer, and various animals. One poster for a tattoo parlor, named Shamrock Studios, is decorated with monsters, dragons, warriors and a wizard with a large top hat accompanied with a sinister grin. X = ART features a wolf dancing among sheep in a sheep skin for the event's handbill. Many clubs would have a themed night for women specifically to come dressed in certain attire, "Those wearing leg hose will be admitted FREE," is written on a business card for The Mart dance club. The flyers list the venue or event titles, location, and date but also a small description of the place, "The all new, all purpose, entertainment nucleus," is written on a poster for the popular venue during this time, The Jabberjaw. The Jabberjaw was a small coffee shop and music venue that attracted people of all ages with the underground sound of the bands that would play there. One flyer features popular horror movie actresses for the first run of the hit show "Scream Queens," decorated with photos of the young women. Many places wanted cool and interesting names to attract young crowds and gain more business. Motorbooty, Hair Magic, Long Hard Rides, Psycho B*tches, DV8 Edge, and Pink Tarantula Hair are just a few of the odd names of stores and events. Aside from all the bright and colorful posters about clubbing and hook-ups there are a few for charity events. During the early 1980s AIDS became well known throughout the United States leading to large groups of people without much help. Aid & Comfort II is listed on the top of a flyer for a concert and picnic benefit for those with AIDS. It was used to not only provide awareness but also give those with AIDS a meal and place to go. A vivid look back on the creative names and designs stores, venues, and events used to attract customers on the West Coast in the decade of the 1980s-1990s. .

Exemplaren. The Flower Girl

1980. A Fine 'Modern' Automata"The Flower Girl"[MUSICAL AUTOMATA]. The Flower Girl. [no place, no date: ca. 1980?].Cased Automata. Case size: 23 x 19 x 5 5/8 inches; 583 x 482 x 143 mm. Window size: 19 1/4 x 15 1/8 inches; 490 x 385 mm. The background is a hand-painted 'rolling hills' scene with the Flower Girl doll standing, holding in her left hand a basket of dried flowers. She is set within an intricate arrangement of dried branches, flowers and butterflies. The wind-up 'Flower Girl' doll [with original brass key], dressed in white 'Queen Anne' lace with a white lace bonnet, moves gently to Johannes Brahms most famous lullaby "Good evening, good night" or "Cradle Song" which was first published in 1868. Original red velvet covered wooden box, with glass cover and gold-painted wooden frame. The back of the automata with original hinged velvet covered stand. The glass in engraved "Tiffany" at the top and "The Flower Girl / 1884" at the bottom. The wooden frame is engraved at the bottom "London-Paris Tiffany Studios". The original paper label on the back states: "Made exclusively for / Tiffany / Studios / London - Paris - New York / The Great Parisian Exhibition / 1884 / Exposition / d'Art / No. 16 [handwritten in black ink]/Gold Medal/of Merit/ Loci Universal Exhibition/ Music Automata". A few small surface chips to the gilt-painted frame, otherwise near fine and in perfect working order.Although there are 'spurious' Tiffany markings on the box and the glass, and a 'spurious' Tiffany Studios label on the back - this Automata is a fine example of one of the few 'modern' forgeries that have appeared on the market over the past thirty odd years. Although 'modern' this is a superb example - and it really does look like and work like a real antique late nineteenth century piece.

        Concept Sports/Racing Car

1980. Mixed media on paper, cut out and laid on a larger sheet. Signed, "Dom Pacitti" The epitome of the American sports car by car stylist, Dom Pacitti That car racing has influenced car design is as interesting as it is obvious because the modern American sports car itself embodies not just aerodynamics but also the sense of danger, the antagonism of competition, the thrill of triumph and superiority of motor racing. This smooth, sleek, dark car conveys an image of latent power that is as unmistakably American as an extravagant science fiction movie. Its dark blue with purple highlights and black windows imply stealth and unsularity, as well as impeccable craftsmanship.
