        Tulsa

1979. First Edition . Signed. CLARK, Larry. Tulsa. (New York: Rapoport [Lustrum Press], 1971 [i.e. 1979]). Slim folio, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $2000.Signed limited first hardbound edition of ClarkÂ’s shocking first book, boldly signed and numbered “38/400” by Clark on the title page.“Clark set out in his photographs to try to tell the truth about the world and about himself” (Roth, 208). Tulsa is now a photography classic— the work that established ClarkÂ’s reputation, despite its limited exposure from a small print run. It documents the violent, desperate lives of “speed freaks” in the photographerÂ’s hometown, told from inside the story. Clark has innovatively collapsed the distance between the “objective observer” and his subjects. First published in 1971 by Ralph GibsonÂ’s Lustrum Press and produced with funds donated by Danny Seymour, whose own book A Loud Song was printed back-to-back with Tulsa. This is the first hardcover edition, bound by Clark in 1979 from the 1971 sheets. Roth, 208-09. Open Book, 272-73. Fine condition.

Superman: multi-panel page of original Sunday newspaper strip artwork by George Tuska, black ink on Strathmore paper. Dated, upper left, "Sunday, 3-15"

New York: D.C. Comics, Inc, 1979. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. Fine. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. A vigorous multi-panel drawing, by Tuska, fully lettered, of the exploits of the first and greatest superhero. Tuska specialized in particularly intense action scenes; he also illustrated such series as Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Justice League, Infinity, and Power Man. A fine, original example of 1970s action comic art. George Tuska finished his studies at the National Academy School of Art at age 21. In 1939, he became John Terry's assistant on 'Scorchy Smith'. At the same time, he joined the graphic studios of Jerry Iger and Will Eisner. There he worked on several comic books, like 'Jungle', 'Wings', 'Planet Wonderworld' and 'Mystery Men'. In the 1940s, Tuska created the character 'Hercule' for Quality Comics and, as a member of Studio Chesler, he drew several episodes of 'Captain Marvel', 'Golden Arrow', 'Uncle Sam' and 'El Carim'. Tuska was mobilized during World War II, so he had to postpone his comic activities. After the war, he continued in the comic field with 'The Crime Does Not Pay', and as the illustrator on 'Scorchy Smith'. In 1959, he took over the daily and weekly 'Buck Rogers' pages, which he continued until 1967. In the late 1960s, Tuska started working for Marvel, where he contributed to the series 'Ghost Rider', 'Planet of the Apes', 'X-Men', 'Daredevil' and 'Iron Man'. He continued drawing superhero comics for DC, like 'Superman', 'Superboy' and 'Challengers of the Unknown'. In 1978, along with José Delbo, Paul Kupperberg and Martin Pasko, Tuska started a new version of the daily 'Superman' comic. Tuska worked on this series until 1993.

Collection of 112 Tony Shafrazi Gallery Exhibition Announcements, Posters, and Other Ephemera

New York: Tony Shafrazi Gallery 1979-2002 - Collection of 112 Tony Shafrazi exhibition announcements, posters, and other ephemera, some circulated. The collection tracks Shafrazi's New York City gallerist career; notable artists shown included Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Donald Baechler, Kenny Scharf, Ronnie Cutrone, Michael Heizer, Ed Ruscha, Enzo Cucchi, Patrick Demarchelier, David LaChapelle, and many others. The collection begins with his inaugural New York City show with Oliver Mosset in 1979, shown in Shafrazi's apartment at 88 Lexington Avenue, and goes on to contain such important shows as Shafrazi's first exhibition of work by Keith Haring in a 1981 group show, his first exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat in a 1983 group show, as well as Basquiat's final solo show as a living artist, held in 1987. In addition to the gallery invitations, the collection contains five posters, and four 1981 artist biographies for Keith Haring, Donald Baechler, Jonathan Lasker, and Ronnie Cutrone. Throughout, the invitations themselves are graphically compelling; one can see in their evolution into increasingly deluxe printed objects, the growth of the contemporary art market. An important ephemeral collection tracing the galleries trajectory of one of art's most colorful characters. A few items showing light creases, but majority near fine to fine, some items circulated.

Folio (14 1/2" x 10") issued in beige with brown lettering to spine and front covers. Limited to 1000 copies. Reprint of the 1648 edition. Juan de Solorzano Pereira studied jurisprudence in Salmanca and in 1609 was appointed judge in the Audiencia of Lima, a position that he held until 1627. He wrote a number of books on legal matters, but his most important was De Indianorum jure disputatione (Madrid, 1629). He subsequently adapted and translated this work into Spanish, giving it the new title Politica Indiana. The first book of the Politica Indiana describes the discovery of the Indies and discusses the legality of the conquest and of Spanish occupation. Solorzano wrote against the "black legend", although he denounced excesses committed by Spaniard against the Indians. In the remainder of the Politica, Solorzano addressed various themes such as Indian freedom, the "encomiendas," ecclesiastical matters, the Royal Partronate, secular government and the economy of the Indies. The Politica systematizes law and politics in colonial America. Condition: Volume one damp stained at heel with some rippling to front heel corner, both volumes soiled else a good to very good set. . Condition: Volume one damp stained at heel with some rippling to front heel corner, both volumes soiled else a good to very good set. .
