        Suttree - Association Copy

Association Copy. New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition, First Printing, with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page, as well as the proper printing code of "24689753" to denote a first printing. In the original dust jacket with the price of $12.95 intact. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. Pages are in fair condition as well, with water warping, light pencil marking. The dust jacket shows edge wear, surface wear and creasing. It seems the book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four gift inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel. The inscriptions, as far as can be deciphered, are as follows: 6/15/82A wonderful view of Knoxville's netherside. A fantastic(?) collection of stamps and beautiful description of life.Bob Kronick(Most likely Robert Kronick, currently a professor of University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where Suttree is set; he earned his PhD there in 1971)Kit-Memories came Rushing back...of places and more than a few people, too. Charlie (Cormac) and I saw some of his images together. Now I wonder if it was as hard as Charlie saw...or as soft and clouded as I remember.         Flash Gordon [Original Art]

1979 Original art by Carlos Garzon for a double-page splash of a Flash Gordon comic book (unsigned, undated). On Strathmore heavy illustration paper, overall dimensions 19" x 14 1/2", image occupying most of that. Lightly layout-taped at corners to backing cardboard. A few layout marks and notations, else Fine. A two-page sequence scene showing Flash defeating a variety of rough looking gladiator-type alien foes in a desolate part of the planet Mongo, in a contest - The Tournament of Death - he was forced into by Ming. Carlos Garzon's name can be found all over DC, Dark Horse and Marvel comics, notably in Flash Gordon, Star Wars, Star Trek and Spiderman offerings. This double-page splash was drawn in 1979 as part of a Flash Gordon story that was never published. It would have been in one of the final issues of the series that began in 1966 with the now legendary "re-creation" of Alex Raymond's space hero by Al Williamson with King Comics Flash Gordon #1. Garzon had already been heavily influenced by Williamson. Scarce, particularly as an action double-panel from an unpublished issue. Art

        The Right Stuff

New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1979.. New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1979. First edition. Octavo, original cloth with titles to the spine in silver. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by Tom Wolfe and additionally signed by pilot Chuck Yeager and by John Glenn, one of the Mercury Seven. A very sharp copy, rare signed by Wolfe, Yeager and Glenn. Tom Wolfe began The Right Stuff at a time when it was unfashionable to contemplate American heroism. Nixon had left the White House in disgrace, the nation was reeling from the catastrophe of Vietnam, and in 1979--the year the book appeared--Americans were being held hostage by Iranian militants. Yet it was exactly the anachronistic courage of his subjects that captivated Wolfe. In his foreword, he notes that as late as 1970, almost one in four career Navy pilots died in accidents. "The Right Stuff," he explains, "became a story of why men were willing--willing?--delighted!--to take on such odds in this, an era literary people had long since characterized as the age of the anti-hero." "One of the most romantic and thrilling books ever written about men who put themselves in peril." (The Boston Globe). Listed by Modern Library as one of the top 100 nonfiction works of the twentieth century.

Sophie's Choice / Publisher's Presentation Edition, first printing / Hardcover, Plain Jacket in Glassine As Per Early Issue

Random House, New York 1979 - New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition, First Printing, Special Publisher's Presentation Edition copy (see scans; frontal scan is with glassine jacket on, spine scan is with jacket removed), so printed on flyleaf "This Special Edition had been prepared for presentation to the friends of the author and the publisher", and on laid-in TLS on Random House letterhead, dated April 27th, 1979, signed by Michael T. Pratt, Divisional Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Random House (scan). Octavo, 515 pp. Light blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, plain glassine jacket [as issued; final dustjacket was not ready by April 27th]. Glassine jacket is inside mylar protector, still shows a few small chips and nicks. Cloth slightly sunned along along spine and margins of front and back covers [primarily front], else Near Fine overall. The very "first" first of Styron's masterpiece of, on one level, assumed societal and personal preconscious guilt, and on another."despite its macabre subject matter, the book is a paen to delirious, doomed hope, a raised Grail upon the Brooklyn Bridge to the unrelenting forgiveness in a spindly blade of grass emerging from a charred patch of Earth. Unwittingly or not, Styron has truly captured the tragedy and triumph of the Jewish experience: It is not about Judgment Day, only morning, beautiful and fair." [Amazon Review]. With the retained very fragile glassine jacket, quite rare. See scans. Strong Provenance to purchaser. L53n [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
