Countercoup: The Struggle for the Control of Iran *SIGNED AND MORBIDLY INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR*

McGraw-Hill, USA, 1979, Hard Cover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: Fair, First Edition, SignedSize: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, 217 pages. Black and white photos. Signed by author upon front free endpaper beneath his chilling hand-written inscription "For Leo with warmest regards from his fellow liquidator." Kermit Roosevelt was given the go-ahead to mastermind the overthrow of democratically elected Iranian President Mossadegh after the latter nationalized the Iranian oil industry in 1951. "Roosevelt explains in minute-by-minute detail how he performed his mission... He tells with whom he worked, how he worked, and how the plan was almost aborted." - from dust jacket. "Kermit Roosevelt admitted on NPR radio that in 1953 the CIA and British intelligence carried out a wave of bombings and shootings in Iran. He then went on to brag about how they subsequently blamed the bombings on Iran's President, Mossadegh." - from an online reference. An important book, particularly given America's current preoccupation with Iran, again. Average wear to unmarked book. Binding sound. Various substantial defects to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A significant piece of American, and Iranian, history.

        The Architecture of John Staub

University of Texas Press, Austin 1979 - This is a very good hardcover copy in a very good dust jacket. The book has been signed by both John Staub and Howard Barnstone, (in the year of publication), and inscribed to the partner of one of the people who commissioned a house from Staub, (the house is illustrated in the book). Two minor flaws: dust jacket spine sunned, and one chip to the rear cover lower edge, also the edge of the cloth spine was starting and has been professionally repaired, now virtually invisible. Foreword by Vincent Scully. This is the trade edition, not the limited. Selected bibliography. Glossary. Chronological list of works. Illustrated in black & white throughout with photographs, plans, elevations, details and maps on almost every page. 11" high X 9" wide, 363 pages. A very special signed copy. Rare. Consists of blank pages, accompanied by 60 4 X 2 3/4 inch stickers with black-and-white reproductions of photographs, drawings, and paintings.         Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire universel raisonné des connoissances humaines. Yverdon, Fortuné-Barthélemy de Félice, 1770-1780. 58 volumes (42 text, 6 supplement and 10 plates volumes). 4to. With 1264 engraved plates (numbered "1410" by the publisher). Contemporary uniform sprinkled tanned sheepskin, spine with gold fillets.

Darnton, The business of Enlightenment (1979), pp. 19-21; Delon, Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment (2001), pp. 442-443. First and only early edition of the complete 58-volume Yverdon Encyclopédie, Protestant Switzerland's answer to Diderot's irreligious Encyclopédie, edited and published by Fortuné-Barthélemy Félice (1723-1789). Félice choose not to just reissue Diderot's monumental encyclopaedia, but to improve it by purging Diderot's subversive input, making numerous improvements and adding new entries with the help of Leonhard Euler, Charles François Dupuis, Jérôme Lalande, Albrecht von Haller and others. With these alterations it got a much broader European scope than Diderot's Franco-centric encyclopaedia. Old manuscript shelf marks on the spines of the bindings. The leather of the binding has browned the edges of the endpapers. With only an occasional waterstain in a couple of volumes, otherwise in very good condition and with the plates in very crisp impressions. A few of the spine-labels slightly faded and some occasional minor rubbing to the bindings. A remarkable monument to scholarship, partly based on Diderot and partly new.

        Fushi Kaden (Signed Limited Edition)

Tokyo: Akio Nagasawas, 2012. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. This is a signed limited edition of the highly regarded photobook Fushi Kaden published by Akio Nagasawas, Tokyo in 2012 with a limitation of 500 this being 218. This is Issei Suda\'s first and most famous photobook. Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian in their reference work on Japanese Photobooks, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s provide an excellent critique, Suda\'s photography seems to be trying to grasp scenes remembered from bygone days, preserved despite the passage of time - everyday life, local festivals, the sliding doors typical of a traditional Japanese home, children dressed up for special occasions, a sleeping cat, an old woman with flowers kids on a school trip, or the painted face of a Kabuki actor. Yet these are not simple idealizations of the past . The matter-of-factness of Suda\'s photography gives a sense of balance and detachment while at the same time suggesting an otherworldliness. This signed limited edition is more than just a facsimile of the 1979 first edition. The original edition contained 100 images but Issei Suda has added 38 photographs not included in the earlier book. In the afterword to the book, Issei Suda considers the new edition \"the complete edition\". Measuring approximately 10 x 10.5 inches, the book is bound in black satin covered boards with a laid-in photograph. The book is housed in a functional black slipcase. The afterword as well as the photograph captions are in both Japanese and English. The book is signed and numbered by Issei Suda. The book and slipcase are in MINT condition. Cited in the reference work on Japanese Photobooks, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s by Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian.

Provenienz: Sammlung Joanneum, Graz, Lugt 2709; Sammlung L. H. Philippi, Hamburg, Lugt 1335.. Die Zuschreibung an den kaum bekannten Filippo Pedrini, den Sohn des in Bologna tätigen Malers Domenico Pedrini, gründet sich auf die unlängst von Clerici Bagozzi als Arbeit von Filippo Pedrini erkannte lavierte Federzeichnung "Deckenentwurf mit Bacchus, Ariadne, Diana und Minerva" im Art Institute in Chicago (H. Joachim/ S. Folds McCullagh, "Italian Drawings in the Art Institute of Chicago", Chicago und London, 1979, no. 147, pl. 154) und auf die von Veronika Birke Pedrini zugeschriebene lavierte Federzeichnung "Die Anbetung der Hirten" in der Albertina in Wien (V. Birke7 J Kertesz, "Die Italienischen Zeichnungen der Albertina. Generalverzeichnis", 2 Bde., Wien, Köln, Weimar, 1992, Bd. II, Inv. Nr. 1868). August 1995).

The Speaking Picture Book. A Special Book with Picture, Rhyme and Sound for Little People

. Cloth. Near Fine. N.d., circa 1890s. Sixteenth Edition. With nine ivory tassels or pulls with strings attached, which when pulled out from the foreedge or side of the box, produce various sounds: a cock crowling, birds chirping, a donkey bray, a bleat, a moo, a coo, etc. Described by Peter Haining as "The piece de resistance of any collection of movables, or toy-books for that matter". See Haining "Movable Books", New English Library, 1979, p. 136. (Note Haining has in illustration a copy of 17th Edition and he dates the book circa 1893.) The book was produced in Nuremberg by an unknown firm, according to Haining, and as the title page discloses, translated versions were made available in French, Spanish, and as this copy, in English. The sharp chromolithography of the cover and eight other illustrations is inquestionably German and Bavarian. With 22 pp of text, including text on FEP (but not counting cover.) Measures 12.25 x 9.25 x 2.5 inches, or 32 x 24 x 6.5 cm.A minor closed tear along lower hinge of several leaves. Age toning to pages, with some light finger soiling in margins. Light wear of gilt on foreedges. Light rubbing along cloth of spine edge. Not all the sounds are so easily distinguishable, as was probably always the case, but they are all here. Seldom found in completely working order as is this example.

[Manuscript]: A Married Man's Diary of a passionate love for another man in New York City (1979)

[New York City]. (1979). Blank book. Octavo. Quarter cloth and marbled paper over boards. A compelling diary kept by a married man (name withheld but identified in the diary): "at 37 in my married state!" - written at the culminating moment of a 15-month relationship with another man. His account consists of 10 manuscript pages in ink, covering a two-month period (February-March, 1979), with three additional pages of manuscript notes at the back (the remaining pages are blank). Near fine. The first page begins on February 9th, with the writer's [John] philosophical justifications for keeping a diary, inspired also by his current reading of Proust and D. H. Lawrence. In the second entry he begins to address the heart of the matter, giving an account of his friendship of over a year with a man (MR or Marc) that he hopes is on the verge of becoming romantic and sexual. The entries become more and more poignant, as his initial advances are rejected, and as he wrestles with conflicting emotions: "Here I am, feeling contrite, self-conscious again - another abortive pass at Marc - another irritated, pained rejection ... It's clear I want to separate the beautiful thing I felt, and want more of, with him from the other big realities of my life. And I can't trust him ... but still he gives me intense joy, intense pain. And always, too, the physical yearning. He is utterly beautiful ... I'm also willing to wait. It has to be reciprocal." With increasing emotion in this last three entries from March, he speculates at length on his and Marc's competing motivations, his urgent need for "the physical expression" (but also ambivalence about its consummation), and then describes how things turn out badly, culminating in a fight, and a mad "dash out into the night followed by hurled wet laundry into Columbus Avenue. ... God damn Marc for being so fascinating - or me, for being as fascinated by my own feelings for him." Laid-in is a manuscript note to John from Marc, written over a year later ("Mon. 5/19 - 1980") on a carbon receipt, in which he explains his attempts to get in touch. A provocative and moving testimony. .
