        Law, Legislation and Liberty

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1973-, 1979. First editions of the economist's magnum opus. Octavo, original black cloth. Each volume is fine in a very good to near fine dust jackets. Volumes 1 & 2 are signed by Hayek. Rare, especially signed. Nobel Prize-winning economist's F.A. Hayek’s landmark three-volume Law, Legislation and Liberty is "an immense contribution to social and legal philosophy" (Philosophical Studies). The first volume in the series, Rules and Order (1973), deals with the distinction between legislative law and natural or "grown" law, and its implications for freedom. Volume 2, The Mirage of Social Justice (1976), attacks the widespread contemporary belief in political redistribution and "social justice" (the latter a myth, Hayek argues). Hayek argues persuasively that modern society has destroyed the original conception of the legislature, and that as a consequence there has been a miscarriage of the democratic ideal. Ours has become a "bargaining democracy," in which government is little more than the football of special interests. In tracing precisely how and why this situation arose, Hayek confronts the central flaw of modern democracy: the notion of government as sugar daddy, confiscating income and doling it out to those with the greatest political clout. To halt this destructive process, Hayek urges "the containment of power and the dethronement of politics," together with the rules which permit the formation of a "spontaneous order" in which law is king and government has neither a mandate nor the power to achieve particular—as opposed to general—ends. He logically demonstrates the inconsistency of a centralized, governmentally-controlled society with freedom. The two, he insists, are incompatible. Hayek’s astounding intellectual range encompasses politics, philosophy, economics, anthropology, sociology and the history of ideas. His language is nontechnical, possessing clarity of style and thought. The book has a consistency, brilliance, insight and accessibility rarely found among thinkers of any age, much less our own. Reading Hayek is a bracing experience, something like the intellectual equivalent of drinking from a cold, clear brook" (Paul Westman).

OP: Independent Music, Complete Run A-Z, 1979-1984

Lost Music Network 1979 - Complete run in 26 issues covering the letters of the alphabet, with six issues of OPtion included. Stapled wraps, some in newspaper format. Very Good condition overall. Subscription card cut out of back cover of first issue. Toning, slight chipping, and brittleness to first 14 issues. A few small stains to covers. Stamps, postmarks and name/address on back covers. A few stray pen marks (very infrequent). Red Tone Poets 7" laid into issue V. Light wrinkling to T issue. OP created "indie" as a musical label. It spanned the entirety of music not on major labels during a time of mainstream conformity and a largely unsung proliferation of sub rosa styles and genres. People associated with the fanzine went on to found K Records, Sub Pop, and a bunch of other labels; create grunge; and generally redefine the idea of American youth culture. These issues are still a great resource for finding overlooked music from the early '80s. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Los Angeles Punk Flyers

Los Angeles. 1980s-early1990s. A collection of 404 flyers and handbills promoting Los Angeles punk venues and bands from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s featuring acts such as, Social Distortion, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, and Operation Ivy. The flyers are all printed on standard sized sheets, mostly 8.5" x 11" or 4" x 6", in various colors with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. Overall near fine or better with only scattered edgewear and light soiling. This collections shows a mix of bands, both known and unknown, responsible for creating the Los Angeles brand of punk rock. Beginning in the early 1980s Los Angeles had been introduced to hardcore and started fashioning the definitive version of the genre with bands like The Mentors, T.S.O.L., and Black Flag. With this new brand of punk rock came a new, and more violent, approach to the music often resulting in police raids. This also triggered counter genres such as ska and reggae versions of punk as developed in bands like the Toasters and Bad Brains, both represented here.Numerous venues sprung up during this time including Godzilla's, Anti-Club, and a resurgence of interest in the Whisky-a-Go-Go thanks to the promotion of former Runaways manager, Kim Fowley. Formed in 1979, Anti-Club, was the brain child of Russell Jessum, Jack Marquette, and Jim Van Tyne and was home to many LA bands including many from SST Record, the label of Black Flag's Greg Ginn. Renowned for their violence, SST bands, including Black Flag, were constantly watched by police and caused some venues to put a ban on hardcore at their clubs. After roughly half a decade of angst and tension the scene collapsed on itself but emerged with groups like Hole (one early flyer featured here) with more controlled rage. However, the culture had shifted significantly with "do-it-yourself" sensibilities overriding major labels and promotion falling to the bands themselves and small scale managers utilizing makeshift flyers and art to promote the music to the masses. A vivid assemblage of 80s punk culture representing LA's burgeoning hardcore scene including a varied assortment of obscure bands that would be difficult to duplicate. .

Seven San Francisco Punk Flyer Paste-ups

[San Francisco]. 1979 and 1980. Collage paste-ups for seven flyers created and obtained from artist Eddie Troia for shows at The Temple (aka The Temple Beautiful and The Geary Temple) in San Francisco in 1979 and early 1980. Cut and paste elements on letter and legal sized sheets, some with holograph text written with white out on overlays. Some elements with typical rippling from paste, near fine. A collection of paste-ups documenting punk shows at The Temple, an old Synagogue near the Fillmore and the Jim Jones Temple, which became a punk venue in 1979 but ceased having punk shows the following year. The building was damaged by the 1989 earthquake and was subsequently torn down. The mock-ups are for shows by quite a cross section of the punk, avant, and industrial bands in SF at the time, with shows by Impatient Youth, Flamin' Groovies, Alley Cats, Suburban Lawns, No Alternative, Minimal Man, The Offs, Mutants, X, Subhumans, Mondellos, Roy Loney & The Phantom Movers, Soul Rebels, Dead Kennedys, Phone Bill, Zeroes, Sleepers, and B People.Eddie Troia was a playwright, artist, and manager for Jane Dornbacker. His art is characterized by a sure use of confident holograph titles with well-chosen images from pop culture, contrasted with a cleanness resulting from the skillful use of glassine overlay. Striking and beautiful artwork documenting a very important but short-lived venue of the era, as well as a valuable look at the graphic techniques of flyer creation before the computer. It is getting more and more difficult to find original mock-ups from meaningful performances, especially in a grouping. .

Autograph letter signed ("J. D. Salinger").

Cornish, New Hampshire, 15. IV. 1979.. 8vo. ¾ p. Matted in silver gray with printed photograph and archivally framed in decorative silver painted wood frame (345:435 mm).. Salinger writes to Ramona Blue that he is, "at best a sort of one-shot letter-answerer, but [...] that exceptionally nice letter of yours did reach me, Thank you [...]". - Salinger's letter is accompanied by the correspondent's original query to the publishing house, Little, Brown and Co. about whether the author is still alive. A note from the publisher on the correspondent's letter indicates that the letter will be forwarded to Salinger. Consequently, Salinger writes the letter offered here. - Known as a recluse, Salinger's hand written letters are scarce.

OP: Independent Music, Complete Run A-Z, 1979-1984

Olympia: Lost Music Network, 1979. Very Good. Olympia: Lost Music Network: 1979- 1984. Complete run in 26 issues covering the letters of the alphabet, with six issues of OPtion included.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Inscribed First Edition)

London: Arthur Barker Ltd, 1979. First edition. Fine/Fine. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "To Mike & Wendy Best wishes Douglas Adams." A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Surprisingly scarce in the first edition and often found read to death. This copy with "Capricorn One" advertisement on the rear panel of the jacket, as required for the first issue. An exceptional copy. The author's first book, and first in the series. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is an off-beat, sci-fi adventure book generally regarded as one of the most hilarious books written in the last fifty years. It has been wildly successful through its various radio, TV, stage, and film adaptations with millions of fans world-wide. A superb copy of this classic work of science fiction. "Humorous science fiction novels have notoriously limited audiences... The ''Hitchhiker's Guide'' is a delightful exception, being written for anyone who can understand the thrill that might come to a crew of interstellar explorers who discover a mysterious planet, dead for five million years, and then hear on their ''sub etha'' radio a ghostly voice, hollow, reedy, insubstantial: ''Greetings to you. ... This is a recorded announcement, as I'm afraid we're all out at the moment. ...'' (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket.
