L'ART KOTA: LES FIGURES DE RELIQUAIRE

Chaffin, Alain & Francoise. L'ART KOTA: LES FIGURES DE RELIQUAIRE. Meudon, FRANCE. ND (circa 1979).: Alain et Francoise Chaffin, First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Art Monograph. Very Good/Very Good. 354pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in French and English. With a bibliography. This beautiful volume by noted African art scholars Alain and Francoise Chaffin is the first comprehensive stylistic study of the wood and metal reliquary statues of the Kota-associated peoples of Gabon and the Congo. It covers the comparative aesthetic and technical aspects of these sculptures as well as the historical and cultural aspects of their creation. A handsome, lightly used example of this exceedingly uncommon, authoritative reference bearing a few nicks to the foredge of the first few pages, a slight dent at the beginning of the top edge of the textblock, and whose dust jacket shows a diagonal soft crease through the inside front flap along with some light wear and creasing along the top and bottom edges. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Die Veränderung des Strassenraums durch das Auto

Pädagogische Hochschule Berlin, Berlin 1979 - Oblong Folio (13 1/2 x 20"). 98pp. Original maquette with black binders tape at top edge, photograph pasted to cover and black lettering on cover. This work is an attempt to provide an overview and documentation of the changes of the street as a defined space due to the invention of the car and its use for transportation. The report, a student project, was originally submitted by two students at the Pedagogic College Berlin in the winter semester 1978/79. It investigates the change of the streetscape in Berlin from the early 20th century through the late 1970s, with projections of changes into the 1990s. The report is divided into four parts: 1. the general development of the city and traffic in the BRD, 2. the specific situation in Berlin, 3. the changes of the streetscape in Berlin, and 4. evaluation of the investigation with outlooks on contemporary traffic and its future as well as the change of consciousness in the city, tools for improvement and proposals for the future. The report is profusely illustrated with original drawings, one three part overlay, photographs, color photomontages, newspaper clippings of text, photographs and city maps. Part three, illustrating the changes in the Berlin cityscape, consists mainly of photographs, montages and drawings pasted to heavy stock black paper, at times two glued back to back, with manual calligraphy describing the presentation. The text in the three other parts of the report is presented on typed pages pasted to heavy white paper stock, mostly two 11 1/2 x 8 1/4" pages next to each other on front and on verso. Contains one handwritten, penciled commentary, presumably that of a teacher, questioning the presented data on page 5. Text in German. Very light wear along edges. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

1979 INGMAR BERGMAN - FANNY & ALEXANDER - Original Early Draft SCREENPLAY of the FOUR PART, FIVE HOUR FILM for TELEVISION

Faro, Sweden Ingmar Bergman 1979. Ingmar Bergman: Faro, Sweden, 1979. FANNY AND ALEXANDER - A FILM FOR TELEVISION, by INGMAR BERGMAN. Translated (into English) by Alan Blair. ORIGINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAY for what BERGMAN INTENDED TO BE a FIVE HOUR, FOUR PART FILM for TELEVISION. The Draft is dated Faro (Sweden), 1979. Plastic Spiral Bound Screenplay, green paper and clear plastic covers, 8.25x11.75 inches, mimeographed or photocopied typescript, 235 pages plus 3 prelim pages (Title Page, Characters), pages printed on one side only. VERY GOOD condition, light toning and soiling to the page edges, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A very nice copy. The full breadth and beauty of Ingmar Bergman's incredible film is only fully realized in the format he originally intended, the four part, five hour television film. This 1979 screenplay draft was the embodiment of that vision. However, Bergman was convinced to make a drastically cut version (3 hours versus 5 hours) for limited release in Europe in late 1982 so that the film would qualify for the Academy Awards. After the spliced and diced film finished its very limited European release, and after it won 4 academy awards (it was nominated for six), a 5 hour theatrical film was given limited European theatrical release. That five hour film was basically a spliced together version of the intended four part, five hour television film. Finally, also in 1983, the full four part, five hour television film was shown in Sweden (Fanny och Alexander) in the form Bergman originally intended. I do not believe that Bergman's preferred 5 hour version was ever filmed in English. His original intent was clearly to have the four part, five hour telefilm made and shown on television in both Sweden and the United States. Thus this 1979 English translated draft screenplay. But instead only the drastically shortened film version was ever released theatrically in the United States. That film was released in 1983, four years after this 1979 screenplay for television was looking for U.S. producers. This Original 1979 Draft Screenplay for the Full Four Part, Five Hour Television Film was sent to Super Agent Paul Kohner (long time agent for Ingmar Bergman and for many of Bergman's film stars). Paul Kohner's ownership label is on the title page, with his early phone number CRESTVIEW 1-5165. SCARCE. This 1979 INGMAR BERGMAN written SCREENPLAY for his original vision of a Five Hour, Four Part FILM for TELEVISION, is the only copy I have, and it is the only copy I have ever seen. Very Good

Dressed to Kill (Original screenplay for the 1980 film)

Los Angeles: Filmways Pictures, 1979. Draft script for the 1980 film. Dated 1979 on the title page. Based on other drafts we have handled, this draft, precedes the October 10, 1979 draft probably by 2-4 weeks, as this draft has the same page count as that one, but lacks its added revisions. The De Palma film that essentially solidified the director's style, a mix of Hitchcock-esque suspense and intense sexuality. The film begins with a very famous update on the "Hitchcock shower scene," with Angie Dickinson very plausibly filling Janet Leigh's role. The sixth of nine highly distinctive films De Palma made between 1973 and 1984. Green studio wrappers, stamped with the title in gilt on the front wrapperTitle page present, with a credit for screenwriter De Palma and a date of 1979. 106 leaves, mechanically reproduced. Pages and wrapper easily Near Fine bound with three silver screw brads.

        Mayday

New York: Richard Marek Publishers. (1979). First. First edition. Slightly cocked with accompanying waviness along the spine, a tiny abrasion on the front paste down and bumped corner, about near fine in about near fine dustwrapper with a touch of wear at the heel of the spine and wrinkling along the bottom front edge. Signed by the DeMille. The true first edition of this scarce title, a thriller co-written with Block, a pilot and DeMille's childhood friend. DeMille's co-authorship was originally unattributed, and the book club edition (lacking a priced jacket as this has) is sometimes mistakenly offered as a first edition. Very likely the most difficult DeMille book to obtain, particularly in this condition and signed.         Mommie Dearest (Original screenplay for the 1981 film, producer's copy)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1979. First Draft script for the 1981 film. Copy belonging to producer Frank Yablans, with his name in holograph pencil on the front wrapper. Yablans only two screenwriting credits are this film, and "North Dallas Forty" (1979, directed by Ted Kotcheff). A cult classic, based on Christina Crawford's (Joan Crawford's daughter) best selling 1978 memoir, about her childhood and trying to live up to her mother's high standards. Joan, who was a perfectionist at heart, struggled with alcohol, relationships with men, and the pressures of show business, and Christina and her brother Christopher bore the brunt of it all. The careers of both Joan Crawford and Faye Dunaway were on the decline at the time of release, but Dunaway's campy over-the-top acting gave the film life, and helped resurrect her career, while perhaps shedding new, unsavory light on Crawford. However it would be six years until Dunaway's next great performance, in Barbet Schroeder's 1987 film about Charles Bukowski, "Barfly." Set in Los Angeles and shot on location there, with several scenes shot at Joan Crawford's mansion. Gray studio wrappers. Title page present, dated June 15, 1979, noted as FIRST DRAFT (POLISH), with credits for screenwriter Getchell and novelist Crawford. 136 leaves, mechanically reproduced. Pages about Fine, wrapper about Fine bound with three gold brads.
