        Correspondence

1979-1995. In the early 1980s, Burroughs collaborated with S. Clay Wilson on the German editions of Cities of the Red Night and The Wild Boys [Die Wilden Boys, Frankfurt: Zweitausendeins, 1980]. This collection includes correspondence related to this and other collaborations between Burroughs and Wilson, as follows: from 1979 to 1982, six items from the publisher to Wilson; from 1979 to 1985, three items from Burroughs' associate James Grauerholz to Wilson; and from 1985 to 1995, eleven items from Burroughs to Wilson. The earlier items, from the publisher and from Grauerholz, generally solicit drawings, convey approval for ideas, and give progress updates. The later items, from Burroughs himself (one typed note signed; four autograph postcards signed; six autograph cards signed), are more personal, frequently conveying gratitude for a gift or appreciation of Wilson's work. In one, Burroughs (according to a pencil note by Wilson, he is referring to The Chequered Demon) says "vintage Clay Wilson hilarious, horrible disgusting as life itself...Its fine its swell itsa gawdy taste of Hell." In another, in a card picturing a unicorn, Burroughs asks, "Did you see the Barnum & Bailey unicorn? I suspect it to be a goat." Several of the cards are holiday cards, and in one Burroughs wishes "All the best for 1986 and the time remaining to us all." In the last two items, Burroughs thanks Wilson for, respectively, the Graham Greene stories and for a cat book. He also complains about the heat: "Over 100 now for a week. Can't do anything but sit in my air conditioned house." This last card is signed "Bill Burroughs." All of Burroughs' correspondence items (excepting the postcards) have envelopes; one of the postcards is near fine; the others are fine; many depict Baaronurroughs' artwork. Also together with an original of Wilson's layout and lettering for the cover Cities of the Red Night [Die Stadte der Roten Nacht]: three hand-lettered sheets and one printed sheet.

This work, likely made in the late 1970s, consists of a variety of portraits, usually paired with a fictional story.         Handwritten Manuscript Lyrics of Dreamin'

1979 - Debbie Harry's handwritten manuscript (fair copy), titled at the top, and signed twice, of Dreaming Is Free, her brawny and lusty, gold selling single. The complete lyrics, all in her own handwriting, 27 lines (169 words), in blue ink, all of them on the recto side of an 8 1/2" X 13" sheet of yellow paper. Celestial Debbie has sealed her signature at the end with a kiss in pink lipstick. Ably framed (UV) with a color photograph of D. H. (white skirt and top, hands in pockets, head tilted, big smile). Lightening of the ink in a few places, otherwise fine condition, and this MS is so fair to behold, that if I had a tail, I'd wag it. Dreamin' was the lead single from Blondie's 4th album, Eat to the Beat, a red hot, new wave, punk rock hit, a sorceress' mix of beauty and power, from the "Buddy Holly/Rave On" school of songwriting, released in the gentler days of punk, just before the '70s gave way to the body piercing generation of living wind chimes, whose only fear was a junkyard magnet. The manuscript was gifted to a poorly promoted and lightly attended charity auction in 1992 and she came away from the encounter soured by the experience. So if you plan to get your own Debbie Harry manuscript, you better start stalking her right now, and be sure to come equipped with a donut for bait, a 3 layer blindfold, a rag soaked in chloroform, and a trunk lid that won't open from the inside.         A TESTAMENT OF FAITH. A LEAF FROM A COPY OF THE FIRST AMERICAN BIBLE, TRANSLATED INTO THE LANGUAGE OF THE ALGONQUIN INDIANS BY JOHN ELIOT AND PRINTED AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND IN THE YEAR 1663

Charles E. Goodspeed & Co, Boston 1979 - 210 x 180 mm. (8 1/8 x 6 1/4"). 2 p.l., 10 pp., [1] leaf. ONE OF 87 COPIES printed and bound by the Stinehour Press. Publisher's blue cloth, flat spine with silver lettering. In the original sheer blue dust jacket and blue cloth slipcase. WITH A LEAF FROM ELIOT'S INDIAN BIBLE mounted on a stub following the title page. The book in as-new condition, the leaf with a little smudging to margin on verso, otherwise clean and fresh. This very attractive little leaf book contains a desirable leaf from Eliot's Indian Bible, the first Bible printed in America, along with a brief essay on its significance. In the words of Darlow & Moule, the Eliot Indian Bible "constitutes the earliest example in history of the translation and printing of the entire Bible in a new language as a means of evangelization." Darlow & Moule adds that this Bible "was the first scripture printed in North America, and also the first version prepared for a pagan people in their own language. John Eliot performed the Herculean task of learning the difficult Algonquin tongue, of translating, unaided, the entire Bible in this unknown and unwritten language, of overcoming many technical difficulties, and of then teaching the Indians to read their own tongue. Samuel Green, the printer, was aided greatly by James Printer, an Indian compositor and corrector of the press. . . . The language is now extinct." Eliot (ca. 1604-90) was a Puritan minister in Roxbury, Massachusetts, who, beginning at age 42, studied for 15 years the Narragansett, or Massachusett, dialect of Algonquin used by the Indian tribes in his vicinity. He worked for an additional eight years on his translation. Printing was begun in 1660 with equipment and supplies shipped from England by the Corporation for the Promoting and Propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in New England. The New Testament appeared in 1661, and the entire Bible in 1663. A descendant of the Plymouth colonist for whom he was named, the author of the essay here, John Eliot Alden (1914-91) had a distinguished career as a librarian and bibliographer, culminating in the production of "European Americana: a chronological guide to works printed in Europe relating to the Americas, 1493-1776," designed to be the successor to Sabin.
