        An Armful of Warm Girl

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. (1978). First. First edition. Fine in a slightly spine-toned, near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author to Stanley and Laura Kauffmann: "To Laura & Stanley with love, quarter-century or no quarter-century. Spack." Laid in is the business card from Knopf editor Judith Bailey Jones, with a note to the Kauffmanns: "Here is the Spackman all delectably packaged. love, J." presumably referring to the wraparound jacket design of a recumbent woman. Arguably both the most accomplished and best known novel by this underrated but worthy author whose novels of realistic adult romances were highly praised by John Updike, Edmund Wilson, Alice Adams, James Wolcott, and others. Kauffmann was a distinguished author, editor, and critic, who worked at Ballantine Books, where in 1953 he acquired both Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and Spackman's first novel, Heyday. He also worked at Knopf where he acquired The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. A very nice association. .

        MR. CHESTERTON COMES TO TEA

Printed for the Rampant Lion's Press for Vintage Publications, Cambridge 1978 - 197 x 270 mm. (7 3/4 x 10 1/2"). 56 pp. No. 199 OF 350 COPIES for sale (of a total edition of 370), SIGNED by Aiden Mackey and Richard Ingrams. CHARMING WHITE SHEEPSKIN BINDING FEATURING A FUNCTIONING DOOR BY ANGELA JAMES (stamp-signed and dated "1985" on lower turn-in), bevelled boards painted in speckled yellow and dappled light blue, with a raised strip of yellow sheepskin stretching across both covers, rising on the front cover to frame a wooden panelled door painted blue with a brass knob, hinges, and a name plate etched with the title, this opening to reveal a multi-media collage depicting Mr. Chesterton at tea; doublures in blue calf. Housed in a matching blue cloth folding case, lined with blue calf and thick yellow fleece, upper cover with button closure and leather label. With 18 illustrations, comprised of 16 hitherto unpublished pencil drawings by G. K. Chesterton, photo-frontispiece showing Chesterton with his family, and a map of London. Title printed in brown and black. With an introductory essay on Chesterton as an artist by Richard Ingrams. A pristine copy. In an immensely charming binding by someone celebrated for memorably inventive work, this is a unique copy of Aiden Mackay's essay to accompany previously unpublished drawings by G. K. Chesterton. Well known as a successful writer in many genres, Chesterton (1874-1936) had originally intended to become an illustrator, and with that in mind had attended the Slade School of Art at University College London. But he did not finish a degree, and his early success as an art and literary critic led him away from a field in which he had considerable talent, as can be seen in the pages of this book. Our volume was exhibited at the Designer Bookbinders Exhibition at Leighton House, 11-25 November 1985, and illustrated in "The New Bookbinder" (vol. 8, 1988, p.74; vol. 10, 1990, p. 52 [with color plates opposite p. 45]; and vol. 13, 1993, p. 8). James discussed the binding in great detail in volume 10, commenting that, "this is one of the bindings I most enjoyed working on, as it presented me with a number of challenges and gave me a great deal of enjoyment. I hope Mr. Chesterton would have been amused." She recruited her father to turn the brass doorknob (with the finial of an old round-pin electrical plug) and she was particularly pleased with the door, which continues to open as intended. James served as president of the Designer Bookbinders from 1990 to 1996. According to her biography on the organization's website, she conceives fine bindings "primarily in terms of colour and formal/informal design relationships." Using studio-dyed leathers, she creates covers which often exhibit "geometrical hard-edge onlays and inlays alongside informal and free-flowing elements." She has published two books on her craft, "The Art of Binding Books" (1991) and "The Handmade Book" (2000).         Traces Suspectes en Surface

West Islip, NY: Universal Limited Art Editions, 1978. First edition. Rauschenberg, Robert. Portfolio with 36 lithographs by Rauschenberg and text by Robbe-Grillet. It comprises 31 pages plus the title page and 4 colophon pages, printed from 37 stones for the images and 27 aluminum plates for the text, numbered [1],1-31, I-IV. Pages measure 20-1/2 x 26-3/16 inches (52 x 69 cm.), folded as issued. Printed on specially made Twinrocker paper, with the watermark of the artist's and author's signatures. One of seven artist proof copies from the total edition of 42 copies. Each of the 31 pages is signed and dated by Rauschenberg and signed and numbered by Robbe-Grillet; each page also carries the embossed folio number and publisher's seal. Fine condition in original red cloth clamshell box, designed by the artist, as issued, and the publisher's specially constructed wooden case. "Long enamored of French literature and language, [publisher] Tatyana Grosman attended a lecture by Alain Robbe-Grillet in April 1972. When the writer mentioned Robert Rauschenberg's work, Mrs. Grosman, already aware of stylistic similarities between the two, felt that a collaboration was fated. Two days later, it was underway. During the next four years, Mrs. Grosman sent offset plates to Paris and proofed and translated Robbe-Grillet's text in West Islip; Rauschenberg added images one chapter at a time. The completed pages were sent back to Robbe-Grillet with plates for the next chapter. It soon became clear that Robbe-Grillet was not working in the spirit of sympathetic collaboration but providing a massive text that presented great problems in page design. Rauschenberg responded with images that are much more aloof than in previous books yet responsive to the elegance of the text," Esther Sparks, Universal Limited Art Editions, pp. 447-459. "The title is police jargon, loosely meaning that things are not as they seem....To Robbe-Grillet's mysterious story of lost romance and murder in the city, Rauschenberg responded with a portrayal of everyday life, with supermarkets, underwear, and bicycles. Mrs Grosman saw both contributions as equally nostalgic and sad. 'The effect was a Last Year at Marienbad quality,' she said," Mary Lynn Kotz, Rauschenberg / Art and Life, (1990), p. 148.

        The World According to Garp.

E.P. Dutton, New York 1978 - First edition of the author's fourth novel an most famous novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the title page to his editor David Kent, "For David Kent with my admiration and affection John Irving." Kent's small address label to the front free endpaper, fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear. An outstanding association copy. The World According To Garp is a comic and compassionate coming-of-age novel that established John Irving as one of the most imaginative writers of his generation. A worldwide bestseller since its publication in 1978, Irving's classic is filled with stories inside stories about the life of T.S. Garp, novelist and son of Jenny Fields. "There is something of Byron about John Irving. Not only is it that he woke after the publication of The World According To Garp to find himself famous, but the extremity of his opinions and the nervous violence of his language recall that intemperate noleman, and like Byron, he would certainly say that love is no sinecure" (Robertson Davies). It was made into the 1982 film directed by George Roy Hill and starring Robin Williams in the title role. For their roles, John Lithgow and Glenn Close were respectively nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 55th Academy Awards.         Andy Warhol boldly signed black and white glossy press photo, in a classic Warhol moment of " Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes."

n.p., n.d.. 7" x 9". "A stunning, boldly signed 9"" x 7"" glossy black and white photo of Andy Warhol directing Anne Ford Uzzielli, (left) and her sister Charlotte Ford during an impromptu picture session at New York's Katja Restaurant. Boldly signed and inscribed by Andy Warhol in black felt tip as ""Andy Warhol"", ""To John"", and inscribed The occasion was a black-tie reception for the debut of Charlotte Ford's book on etiquette, ""Charlotte Ford's Book of Modern Manners, which included an excerpt on the ""Etiquette of Divorce "", which was scheduled to appear in the March issue of Ladies' Home Journal in 1978. Near fine with small leftover address remnants to versoWarhol always had an immense fascination for fame, beauty, sex, and etiquette. He focused on whatever mattered most to people. His heightened awareness of fame and the ""famous"" established himself and his brand as his belief was ""Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.' And famous people, places and things are known to 'sell'. As such he went about his art showcasing people and things that everyone would recognize. Responsible for the rise of Pop Art, Warhol’s work is a commentary on the shallowness, repetitiveness and commercialism of consumer culture, while also a celebration of Hollywood and the post-1950s ‘boom’. Focusing on what people would recognize, Warhol's 'factory' created art… whether be it a soup can or Mick Jagger, a Brillo box or the Electric Chair, Marilyn Monroe or a dollar sign. His established ""Factory"", which was not just a social hub, but also Warhol’s jumping off point to go from mere mortal to artist-machine.This black and white glossy depicts the essence of Warhol's fascination, with him photographing Charlotte Ford, daughter of tycoon Henry Ford II, and the divorced wife of Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos, who had just authored a racy book on Etiquette and Manners which discussed divorce, sex and the newly single woman.A great piece, boldly signed and inscribed by Warhol."

Typed Letter Signed on University of Minnesota letterhead

Minneapolis 1978 - American physician called "The Greatest American Surgeon of the 20th Century." He is credited, during his 37-year tenure at the University of Minnesota, for recognizing the cause of Appendicitis and other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In 1952 he performed the world's first open heart surgery, his students being none other than Christian N. Barnard, C. Walton Lillehei, and Norman E. Shumway, all of whom performed the first human heart transplants and credited their surgical techniques to Dr. Wangensteen. 2 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches, Minneapolis, August 30, 1978, providing Dr. William B. Rogers with biographical information for an article, in small part: ".History tells us that innovators who attempt to set aside tradition are at great risk. Whereas the first edition of my book on Intestinal Obstructions won the Samuel D. Gross Award in 1935, I had to send the monograph to four publishers before I found a taker. Similarly, a brief report upon suction siphonage of jejunal obstructions was rejected by an experimental as well as surgical journal. In my long years of identification with the problem, since 1925 and with the aid of a large number of proteges who have emerged as great surgeons, an effective attack has been made upon the problem with an astounding reduction in the mortality at the national level. In the mid 1930s, my associates and I were able to establish for the rabbit, chimpanzee, and man that perforation of the appendix is owing to the high secretory pressure within its lumen; when the appendix is obstructed, with a temporary ligature or by a fecalith, pressures exceeding diastolic blood pressure are regularly observed." Note: a postage stamp and commemorative coin have been proposed to honor career of Dr. Wangensteen. Near fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Stand

1978. First Edition . Signed. KING, Stephen. The Stand. Garden City: Doubleday, 1978. Thick octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $3800.First edition of KingÂ’s Hugo-nominated epic tale of apocalyptic terror, inscribed by him to noted horror collector Bongo Wolf, “For Bongo—With all best, Stephen King, 9/9/79.”""The book that took me the longest to write was The Stand. This is also the one my longtime readers still seem to like the bestÂ… I was writing this story near the end of the so-called Energy Crisis in the 1970s, and I had an absolutely marvelous time envisioning a world that went smash during the course of one horrified, infected summerÂ… Rarely have I seen so clearly with the eye of my imaginationÂ… [A trust in] violence as a solution is woven through human nature like a damning red thread. That became the themeÂ… There is no moral to The Stand, no 'We'd better learn or we'll probably destroy the whole damned planet next time—but if the theme stands out clearly enough, those discussing it may offer their own morals and conclusions. Nothing wrong with that; such discussions are one of the great pleasures of the reading life"" (King, On Writing, 201-6).
