        MR. CHESTERTON COMES TO TEA

Cambridge: Printed for the Rampant Lion's Press for Vintage Publications, 1978. No. 199 OF 350 COPIES for sale (of a total edition of 370), SIGNED by Aiden Mackey and Richard Ingrams. In an immensely charming binding by someone celebrated for memorably inventive work, this is a unique copy of Aiden Mackay's essay to accompany previously unpublished drawings by G. K. Chesterton. Well known as a successful writer in many genres, Chesterton (1874-1936) had originally intended to become an illustrator, and with that in mind had attended the Slade School of Art at University College London. But he did not finish a degree, and his early success as an art and literary critic led him away from a field in which he had considerable talent, as can be seen in the pages of this book. Our volume was exhibited at the Designer Bookbinders Exhibition at Leighton House, 11-25 November 1985, and illustrated in "The New Bookbinder" (vol. 8, 1988, p.74; vol. 10, 1990, p. 52 [with color plates opposite p. 45]; and vol. 13, 1993, p. 8). James discussed the binding in great detail in volume 10, commenting that, "this is one of the bindings I most enjoyed working on, as it presented me with a number of challenges and gave me a great deal of enjoyment. I hope Mr. Chesterton would have been amused." She recruited her father to turn the brass doorknob (with the finial of an old round-pin electrical plug) and she was particularly pleased with the door, which continues to open as intended. James served as president of the Designer Bookbinders from 1990 to 1996. According to her biography on the organization's website, she conceives fine bindings "primarily in terms of colour and formal/informal design relationships." Using studio-dyed leathers, she creates covers which often exhibit "geometrical hard-edge onlays and inlays alongside informal and free-flowing elements." She has published two books on her craft, "The Art of Binding Books" (1991) and "The Handmade Book" (2000).. 197 x 270 mm. (7 3/4 x 10 1/2"). 56 pp. No. 199 OF 350 COPIES for sale (of a total edition of 370), SIGNED by Aiden Mackey and Richard Ingrams. CHARMING WHITE SHEEPSKIN BINDING FEATURING A FUNCTIONING DOOR BY ANGELA JAMES (stamp-signed and dated "1985" on lower turn-in), bevelled boards painted in speckled yellow and dappled light blue, with a raised strip of yellow sheepskin stretching across both covers, rising on the front cover to frame a wooden panelled door painted blue with a brass knob, hinges, and a name plate etched with the title, this opening to reveal a multi-media collage depicting Mr. Chesterton at tea; doublures in blue calf. Housed in a matching blue cloth folding case, lined with blue calf and thick yellow fleece, upper cover with button closure and leather label. With 18 illustrations, comprised of 16 hitherto unpublished pencil drawings by G. K. Chesterton, photo-frontispiece showing Chesterton with his family, and a map of London. Title printed in brown and black. With an introductory essay on Chesterton as an artist by Richard Ingrams. A pristine copy. In an immensely charming binding by someone celebrated for memorably inventive work, this is a unique copy of Aiden Mackay's essay to accompany previously unpublished drawings by G. K. Chesterton.         Typed Letter Signed on University of Minnesota letterhead

Minneapolis, 1978. unbound. 2 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches, Minneapolis, August 30, 1978, providing Dr. William B. Rogers with biographical information for an article, in small part: "...History tells us that innovators who attempt to set aside tradition are at great risk. Whereas the first edition of my book on Intestinal Obstructions won the Samuel D. Gross Award in 1935, I had to send the monograph to four publishers before I found a taker. Similarly, a brief report upon suction siphonage of jejunal obstructions was rejected by an experimental as well as surgical journal...In my long years of identification with the problem, since 1925 and with the aid of a large number of proteges who have emerged as great surgeons, an effective attack has been made upon the problem with an astounding reduction in the mortality at the national level...In the mid 1930s, my associates and I were able to establish for the rabbit, chimpanzee, and man that perforation of the appendix is owing to the high secretory pressure within its lumen; when the appendix is obstructed, with a temporary ligature or by a fecalith, pressures exceeding diastolic blood pressure are regularly observed..." Note: a postage stamp and commemorative coin have been proposed to honor career of Dr. Wangensteen. Near fine condition. American physician called "The Greatest American Surgeon of the 20th Century." He is credited, during his 37-year tenure at the University of Minnesota, for recognizing the cause of Appendicitis and other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In 1952 he performed the world's first open heart surgery, his students being none other than Christian N. Barnard, C. Walton Lillehei, and Norman E. Shumway, all of whom performed the first human heart transplants and credited their surgical techniques to Dr. Wangensteen.

        An Armful of Warm Girl

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1978 - First edition. Fine in a slightly spine-toned, near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author to Stanley and Laura Kauffmann: "To Laura & Stanley with love, quarter-century or no quarter-century. Spack." Laid in is the business card from Knopf editor Judith Bailey Jones, with a note to the Kauffmanns: "Here is the Spackman all delectably packaged. love, J." presumably referring to the wraparound jacket design of a recumbent woman. Arguably both the most accomplished and best known novel by this underrated but worthy author whose novels of realistic adult romances were highly praised by John Updike, Edmund Wilson, Alice Adams, James Wolcott, and others. Kauffmann was a distinguished author, editor, and critic, who worked at Ballantine Books, where in 1953 he acquired both *Fahrenheit 451* by Ray Bradbury, and Spackman's first novel, *Heyday.* He also worked at Knopf where he acquired *The Moviegoer* by Walker Percy. A very nice association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Paris, France: No publisher, 1978. A hand letterpress book, with original text and a facsimile-style printing of the text of the 5th Sonnet of an early French edition of Petrarch. The third line of this sonnet reads "Le laurier digne..." which has been printed to read "Le LAUrier digne... and has been combined in the same fashion with line 7 "Votre noble REgard..." to offer an apparent omage to LAURE. Most pages of text face a color etchings by an artist identified as Signore Fiorini; there are a total of 12 etchings. Each sheet measures 11.5" x 15.5" (29cm x 39cm) and is folded in half forming 4 pages. There are nine such sheets (36 pages), enclosed in a decorated paper portfolio, and protected in a linen-covered clamshell box with "L" printed on the spine. Each etching is protected by glassine. Hand-numbered 12 of 50 copies signed by Simone' Piccone and Fiorini. The colophon reads "Cette edition des vers de PETRARQUE dedies a Laure Bissiere est la seule connue a ce jour. Elle comprend 50 exemplaires imprimes sur Auvergne a la main de Richard de Bas par l'artiste lue-meme; soit un exemplaire numerote 1 <a Laure> quatre exemplaires numerotes HC II a HC V; quarante cinq exemplaires numerotes 6 a 50." The condition is excellent, with a few sheets with tiny spots of foxing, probably inherent in the manufacture by Richard de Bas. The title page contains the phrase "Sic Itur Ad Astra Hic Et Nunc Plus Ultra." Another sheet reads "Acheve d'imprimer a Paris le 15 Mai 1978." Very little about this unusual publication can be found by research, except that Laure Bissiere may be also knows as Madame Laure Loutre Bissiere. The artwork of Roger Bissiere (1886-1964) and B. Louttre (1926-2012) sold at Post War and Contemporary Art auctions has been accompanied by a certificate from Madame Laure Loutre Bissiere. An interesting and beautifully made book.. Signed. First Edition. Unbound. Near fine condition. Quarto (4to).
