[Photo album]: African-American Family Photos from 1937 to 1978 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/Wildwood, New Jersey, 1978. Near Fine. Three folio volumes measuring, 13" x 11.5"; 11.5" x 11.5"; and 11.5" x 10". Black cloth binder with gilt floral decorations; brown leatherette binder with yellow decorations; and a white, green, yellow, and blue leatherette binder. Contains 308 black and white, sepia, or color photographs measuring between 2" x 2" and 10" x 8" with some captions and additional ephemera from 1937 to 1978. Some edgewear and bumped corners, near fine with fine photographs. The photographs are of Malvin Hunt an African-American man from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania following family and friends through the years 1937 to 1978 showing over four decades of clothing, black and white relations, and social interactions from the time periods. The photos include posed and candid shots of different family members, friends, and couples living in West Philadelphia. Most of the candid shots are full of smiles, funny faces, and horsing around while the posed shots are usually groups of families or single individuals. One photo shows a man leaning on his knee, focused against a blurring background, looking pensive while another shows a girl throwing her hands up high in the air at the beach. The group photos are from the beach, picnics, family get-togethers, and a men's group. Some of the photos are labeled with names or little stickers with the words "ARMY" on them (presumably indicating military service during World War II) but are otherwise unmarked and in fine condition. A few pictures feature a Caucasian man arm-in-arm with the African American men, all smiling. As the years progress, more and more photos feature other Caucasian people embracing, smiling, and shaking the hands of their African American friends. Several pictures feature the post office that Hunt worked in with pictures of his coworkers wearing postmen uniforms and collecting mail from mailboxes. The army and postal service were some of the first government jobs African Americans could have in the United States. The brown leatherette photo album features pictures from Wildwood, New Jersey and an unlabeled zoo and farm. Some of the animals pictured are cows, ducks, giant tortoises, elephants, bears, and two pictures of a polar bear with "Life Sentence," written on the photographs. Most of the photos are from the beach of people dancing in the sand and lounging in the sun. A photo of two young men, one white and one black, stand tall with the words "Life guards," written off to the side and another shows four women lounging with "Housewives Paradise" written above. The albums present a fantastic timeline of the 1930s to the 1980s detailing an African-American family.

A collection of 83 photographs, both in color and black and white housed in a 3 ring binder photo album, without captions. Good only lacking the front boards with worn edges and tiny tears. The album, which was possibly assembled for the funeral of Mrs. Dorothy Gay of Lutcher, Louisiana in 1971 and continued after, as the church program is affixed to the rear board, assembles photos of an African-American family from what appears to be the 1930s until the 1970s. Some of the notable early photos include one from July of 1941 of a man in a tuxedo carrying a drum set, three from 1944 of some dapper gentlemen posing in front of a grand staircase, and one undated photo of a man in a nice looking car.         Liberation - Un Regard Moderne no.0-no.5 (complete run)

Liberation January - July 1978, Paris - 6 volumes. Folio, ca 32pp each. Numerous Black & White and Duotoneplates. Text in French. A little sunning and scuffing to edges. A wonderful document of the french graphic new wave in the post punk period. "Founded in the mid-70s by Kiki and Loulou Picasso, Lulu Larsen, Olivia Clavel, Bernard Vidal and Jean Rouzaud during their studies at the Paris Fine Art School, the Bazooka group soon imposed uncompromising, cold and provoking work, - signed collectively or with numerous pseudonyms - standing as a veritable graphic counterpoint to the punk movement. The confessed aim was to get out of the classical galleries network, at first through self-publications (Loukhoum Breton, Activit' Sexuelle Normale, Le Bulletin P'riodique), then reaching a wider audience working on records covers, tv titles, daily press and magazines. Hired by Lib'ration in 1977, they literally exploded the newspaper's template, displacing chronicles, replacing photographic works with drawings or adding texts and captions very often in opposition with the content of the articles they were supposed to illustrate. The editorial staff being divided about these graphic interventions, the verbal and physical assaults between the historical newspaper's team and the members of the Bazooka collective increased until their pure and simple dismissal. Their return was made possible thanks to Serge July's help, the latter offering them to develop an independent project from the newspaper, the henceforth mythical 'Un Regard Moderne' (five plus a #0 issues, all published in 1978). The group exploded at the end of the 70s, as a victim of their excess and their frenetic work rhythm, leaving behind an impressive set of drawings, collages, photomontages, paintings and publications whose influence would be fundamental to the graphic creation to come."       Wiesbaden & Frankfurt am Main: Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft Athenaion; Wiesbaden & Wiebelsheim: Aula-Verlag 1978-2008. - Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen, Karten, Skizzen und Reproduktionen. Vollständige Reihe in sehr gutem Zustand. - Complete suite of the monumental encyclopedia of literary criticism in very good condition. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 32300 Gr. 8° (24,5 x 17,5 cm). Orig.-Leinenbände mit roten goldgeprägten Rückenschildern sowie fotografisch illustrierten Orig.-Schutzumschlägen.         THE AMERICANS ... INTRODUCTION BY JACK KEROUAC

[Millerton, NY]: An Aperture Monograph, 1978. Oblong quarto. Cloth. Photographs. A few smudges to free endsheet, otherwise a very good copy, in good, somewhat smudged and handsoiled dust jacket. Third US edition. An excellent association copy, inscribed by poet/photographer Allen Ginsberg: "A late Birthday Present - July 8, 1985 on 57th St. for Lucien Carr from Allen Ginsberg." Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr went to work for United Press International in 1946 and was promoted to night news editor in 1956, coincident with the preparations for press of the first public edition of HOWL. Carr was included, with Kerouac, Burroughs and Cassady, in the printed dedication, and when he received his copy, wrote Ginsberg expressing "one small gripe" about his inclusion there, and requesting, out of deference to his privacy, that Ginsberg avoid such mention in future books. At Ginsberg's expense, Carr's name was deleted from the dedication page of the second impression (then already printed), and from subsequent printings. Nonetheless, in 1982, Ginsberg dedicated PLUTONIAN ODE to Carr, "... for friendship all these years...."

        Letter - John Gardner

1978 - Typed letter signed "John" to Andre L. Speyer. 8vo., on plain paper; approximately 500 words, unpublished. "I received Florence's angry letter today. I'm sorry my not writing depressed you and made you angry. My sickness threw things into confusion. Then it was time to teach at Bread Loaf, where I work day and night, locked off from the universe. There were some other things too - writing deadlines and so on - but never mind. The upshot is, whenever I'd get a moment's emotional respite, I wouldn't put it into letters I should write but would take care of the things that forced themselves on me, like moving to Binghamton, arguing with the IRS, and so on. I guess the program is indeed dead. With the NPR reorganization a new suggestion was made to me, a half-hour program once a week, but I've heard nothing about it for months. Meanwhile, I'm doing other things - working on a novel, some more libretti, some plays, some children's things - and not worrying about it. Life has its little twists." ---- The recipient, Andre L. Speyer, played French horn for the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops. Gardner acknowledged Speyer in his novel "October Light." An insightful letter with a distinguished provenance. The Man Who Japed

Methuen, (London, 1978) - Small Octavo. 158p. Dick's haunting work envisions a coming future where major corporations have seamlessly merged with government agencies to create a level of control that only needed the technology that now makes virtual spying possible. His vision of the coming world power structure is not content to know the intimate details of each individual but to shape them so they will be devoid of the spirit of any hint of individualism. Originally, written as a science fiction short story in 1956 it timeliness is even more evident in 2017. This is a remarkably bright copy lacking the pronounced browning found in most issues, just a bit to outer edges. Bound in green cloth, spine lettering gilt. Tiny bump to foot. Very nice.         A PRIVATE WORLD. Photographs by Paul Nash.,

(London: Fischer Fine Art, 1978). - 14 x 16 3/4. Twenty-five original black & white photographs tipped to board and laid into a tray case with large label on cover. Printed from Nash's negatives, the photos measure 6 x 12 to approximately 8 x 12 inches. A fine set of these striking photographs. No. 1 of 45 sets. Each photograph is numbered 1/45 on the reverse, and blindstamped on lower right corner with the mark of the Paul Nash Trustees and Tate Gallery Archives Department. The photographs were chosen by John Piper from Paul Nash’s negatives, taken on Nash’s No.1 A pocket Kodak series Two camera between 1931 and 1946. Very uncommon, as some sets have been broken up. These dramatic images explore natural forms & textures. "Stone upon stone in miles of dry stone wall, the endless meeting and parting of furrows in an enormous field, layers of cork drying stacked and roofed like rows of stone fishing huts." John Piper, from the exhibition catalogue. The photographs also display Nash's "interest in the mystery of ordinary things seen from unordinary angles." Several photographs accompanied Nash's article "Seaside Surrealism."

[Diaries and Scrapbook]: Woman's Scrapbook and Travel Diary to Europe from New Jersey

Allenhurst, New Jersey / Arizona / Europe. 1978-1988. Two volumes. Octavo and 24mo. 212pp.; 184pp. Black leather boards and three quarter maroon leather with pink and purple decorated cloth-covered boards with silver spine decorations. The 24mo journal has light edgewear with a small mark on the front board else near fine. The octavo journal has edgewear, bumped spine ends and corners, with tears on the spine, very good. Two journals of a young woman featuring her musings from 1978 to 1988, postcards from friends around the world, and an account of her trip to Europe in the spring of 1981. Contains poems, quotes, drawings, and other written ideas and thoughts by the author; additionally features three color photographs measuring 4.5" x 3.5" and several postcards measuring between 5.5" x 3.5" and 6.5" x 4.5". Two handwritten journals by a young woman from Monmouth County, New Jersey from 1978 to 1988 with pieces of ephemera from her adolescence. The woman was 21 when she first started writing in her larger journal. The written pieces include poems, quotes from books and movies, drawings, and her thoughts; most of which are interesting and boarder on the obscure and morbid. She frequently writes of her dreams though they are often nightmares: "Nightmare this past night-time. Left me numb- Silence in the shower." Between dream descriptions she jots down passing thoughts: "I saw the energy steaming from the top of my head and the top of my shoulder today- in my shadow- on my paper. Fan-out," and poems: "Easily distracted / you think me insane... Don't drag me down... All you are is in your pants / Why don't you wear it out?" During her visit to Arizona in 1978, she complains of the muggy weather and devotes one page to drawings of the bugs she finds, labeling them "Friends of Arizona." Her drawings are odd, one of which is a portrait of herself with the word, "psycho" written below. Another drawing is of a person holding a gun and shooting a wall covered in cupids and hearts. The words "that potential psychotic killer who comes into the library and stares at us... the unsuspected hatchet murderer awaits," are written to the side of the page with a drawing of a man. Several drawings are of skeletons and the words "Dead Head," likely a Grateful Dead reference. She returned home in May 1978 and writes how nice it is to see everyone and later writes about her friend Lois, who is featured in one of the two photographs in the larger journal. Lois is mentioned several times in both books, often commenting on the writer's actions, "You've got a scheming evil look in your eyes..." The included postcards are from friends in London, Washington, DC, Florida, New York, and New Jersey. One is a postcard from a friend of hers pretending to be James Taylor asking "Kimbo" to come see him in the movie Two-Lane Blacktop "before my receding hairline has no place left to go. Catch 'ya later, babe J.T." with a peace sign. The others include warm letters to the writer and ask how she's been and that she is missed by her friends. The smaller journal is of her trip through Europe, with her friends Lois and Ginny. Most of the book includes notes to herself on what not to do in certain places like, "walking up a hill to your hostile(sic) when it isn't even open," and "what you pack, you carry." One entry describes two men with "fat bellies" dancing with her and her friends during their stay in Leipzig, Germany: "One sat at our table and tried to communicate in German. After a bit of confusion, Sue came up with the brilliant conclusion that he wanted a kiss. I kiss the fat guy (on the cheek) and he brought us nuts & chips, to quote Ginny 'Good going!"" Most of the stories are of the joyous and interesting moments she experienced; as contrasted to her larger, more juvenile and emotional journal. Also included in the smaller journal is a color picture of her dancing. An extensive look at a young woman's interior life from 1978-1988 with wide vacillations between happiness and morbidity. .

OBLIQUE STRATEGIES: Over One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas

[London]: [Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt], 1978. Second edition. Very good. Original black box (4.25" x 3.25" x 1.75" approx.) with gilt titled lid housing [127] strategy cards printed in 10-pt. San Serif, plus [1] blank, and [1] instruction card; [129] black-backed cards in all, each 2.75" x 3.75" approx. Complete. From an unnumbered edition inconsistently described as 1000 or 2500 copies. Box has one bumped corner, touches of wear at edges. Interior box insert cleanly loose from lower lid. About very good. Cards have trace handling, edge wear. Else bright, clean, and uncreased. Near fine. Together: very good or better overall. A handsome example. Influential artists' publication offering a series of gnomic pronouncements intented as stimuli for rethinking one's creative "working situation." Schmidt, a German artist who also worked with Dieter Roth and David Toop, had been pursuing a project he called "Thoughts Behind The Thoughts," which was a forerunner of Oblique Strategies, when he and Eno first came in contact. Eno later wrote of Schmidt that he was pursuing the idea of "not doing the things that nobody had ever thought of not doing" [A YEAR WITH SWOLLEN APPENDICES, p. 178]. The cards challenge unconscious assumpions of the creative process, a representative example being the card "Do something boring." The set has been published in at least seven printed editions and three digital versions. Examples from this early edition are rare; OCLC locates just two copies (Emory and MoMA).
