Buchzustand: Neu. London, British Museum, Nr. 10.470 gegen 1300 v. Dynastie, wurde also gegen 1300 v.

Dondelinger, Koblenz.. Standardausgabe in Leinenmappe mit beilieg. Kommentarband, neuwertig..

        Ali's Smile. Naked Scientology

Bonn: Expanded Media Editions,, 1978. Small octavo. Original illustrated wrappers. Two-page black and white portrait frontispiece. Rubbing to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy indeed. First collected edition, with the text in German and English, reprinting Burroughs's letters, reviews and articles (and a short story) on Scientology. This a fantastic association copy, with Allen Ginsberg's ownership inscription to the first blank, "Allen Ginbserg Aug 30 1979, City Lights", and Burrough's inscription on the title page to Allen Ginsberg, "For Allen, love William S. Burroughs". Ginsberg has additionally noted in his own hand on the first blank, "June 12, 1980. signed". Burroughs was introduced to Scientology by his friend Brion Gysin in the late 1950s, and joined the movement for about a decade. He was interested in its promise to free the mind by cleansing it of traumatic experiences, and his "cut-up" technique in his early books was influenced by Hubbard's theories in Dianetics about the epistemological liberation of fracturing consciousness. He soon became disenchanted with the organisation's secretive and authoritarian nature, and was expelled in 1970. The bulk of the pieces reprinted here date from the months and years immediately following his expulsion, and show him giving full rein to his spirited, sardonic resistance to all forms of authority: "No body of knowledge needs an organizational policy. Organisation policy can only impede the advancement of knowledge. There is a basic incompatibility between any organization and freedom of thought. Suppose Newton had founded a Church of Newtonian Physics and refused to show his formula to anyone who doubted the tenets of Newtonian Physics?" As Burroughs's biographer Ted Morgan has noted, he "had hoped to find a method of personal emancipation and had found instead another control system." This inscription to Ginsberg, to whom Burroughs had written as early as 1959 urging him to join the cult, is highly appropriate insofar as both Ginsberg and Burroughs both stood strongly for any form of open enquiry that might lead toward personal liberation, yet against any form of authority that might restrict that tendency. A superb association.

Max's Fri + Sat 4 NITES! CBGB'S Sun + Mon Richard Hell & The Voidoids

[New York. 1978]. Original poster. Measuring 11" x 16.5". Collage and titles printed in black with spot printed red and blue titles. Touch of wear at one corner, else fine. Boldly Signed by Hell and guitarist innovator Robert Quine. A simple but effective visual pun with the stars and stripes in monochrome and Hell and The Voidoids in red and blue. An interesting poster that was probably designed by Hell (the reputed "inventor" of the ripped and torn tee-shirt). OCLC locates no copies though we suspect one might exist in the Hell papers at New York University. Rare. .

        Ali's Smile. Naked Scientology.

Bonn: Expanded Media Editions, 1978 - Small octavo. Original illustrated wrappers. Rubbing to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy indeed. Two-page black and white portrait frontispiece. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Going After Cacciato

New York: Delacorte Press/ Seymour Lawrence, 1978 New York: Delacorte Press / Seymour Lawrence, 1978. Signed and inscribed by the author. First Edition, First Printing (stated). Jacket art by M.S. Chiang. Octavo, 338 pp. Sky blue cloth boards with gilt imprint. Pictorial wraparound [illustration continues around and on to back cover] dust jacket. Fine book in a very, very near fine unclipped jacket with just trace micro-touching at edges. Please see scans. O'Brien's acclaimed third novel, considered one of the finest examples of Vietnam War fiction. Ostensibly the story of a soldier going AWOL and deciding to just walk from Vietnam to the lights of Paris, it is, of course, much more. So highly thought of that two of its chapters won individual awards. An American classic already. Scarce signature. L-44n
