        Inscribed "Star Trek" Shooting Script

Hollywood, 1978. pamphlet. Original 1978 motion picture shooting script, July 19, 1978, for the Paramount Pictures film, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," 134 pages, 4to, bound with metal fasteners with the addition of a studio custom-designed cover. The title page indicates that the screenplay was written by Gene Roddenberry and Harold Livingston and the story by Alan Dean Foster. Paramount was able to secure the services of legendary film director Robert Wise ("The Sound of Music" and "West Side Story"), but the intellectual property and production credit is assigned to Roddenberry alone. As this project was masked in great secrecy, Paramount advises: "This script is not for publication or reproduction. No one is authorized to dispose of same. If lost or destroyed, please notify script department." Roddenberry has boldly signed on the cover, "To Ron - with best wishes for our mutual future in Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry." It is worthy to note that he has made the "G" in Gene very similar to the starship Enterprise. A small damp-stain on the "G" has blurred the ink; otherwise near fine condition. American television screenwriter, producer, and futurist, best known for creating the American television science fiction series Star Trek.

Shosha [Signed association copy, that of Erwin Leiser]

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1978 New York: Farrar Strauss Giroux, 1978. First Edition / First Printing. Signed, inscribed, and dated (May 29, 1981) by the author on the ffep to Erwin Leiser. Octavo, 277 pp. Fine copy in a near-fine dustjacket showing a bit of small-scale edgewear. At the time of its release Singer's first novel in six years, Shosha is a love story in typically offbeat Singer style. Originally written in Yiddish as were almost all most of his novels, Shosha's English title is the name of a childhood love of the protagonist. An aspiring writer in 1930's Poland, his career is being given a boost by a visiting American couple, and he's essaying the romancing not only of the American wife but of several other women as well when he again encounters Shosha. Been there, done that, though not in Poland. Erwin Leiser (1923-1996) was a highly-regarded German-born journalist and director of trenchant documentaries both historical and political in character, having especially to do with the Nazis and the holocaust, the latter being a documentary topic for which he may have been the first director. A handsome example. L53n

        Yoko My Love

Asahi Sonorama, Tokyo 1978 - First Edition. Hardcover. Yoko My Love is the seventh book in the Asahi Sonorama series of photo-books. The subject is Yoko Aoki, Araki;s wife from 1971 until her untimely death in 1990. At the couples wedding reception a slide show of nude photographs of Yoko was presented. She later commented that her relatives were dead silent, not who became ill. From the afterward: "[for Araki,] 'photography is the relationship between the self, the one who is shooting, and the subject, the one who is being shot.' Before photographing, he always questions himself as to what the subject means to him. And, when he can't answer this question, he doesn't take the picture. In effect, the act of taking a picture is a deed that is performed with the goal of seeing oneself clear. In his photographs, Yoko serves as a mirror reflecting himself."         The Stand

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1978. Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1978 First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth over light tan boards, spine lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with an illustration by John Cayea with typography by Elizabeth Levine. About near fine, with some light wear to the spine ends, a hint of rubbing to the spine tail, bright and clean interior, sturdy spine; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of minor wear to the extremities, some light creasing to the spine ends, a few light spots of minor soiling to the spine and rear panel, fresh front panel. An attractive copy. The Stand is a post-apocalyptic novel set in the near future (1980) and is divided into three sections: "Book I: Captain Trips," "Book II: On the Border," and "Book III: The Stand." In the first section, King sets the stage for the rest of the novel by describing how the American government developed a superflu that was intended as a weapon of mass destruction, but was accidentally exposed to the American people, beginning a pandemic that killed over 99% of the world's population and gave way to a climate of violence and anarchy. In the second section, King describes how the remaining American survivors have largely grouped together around two figureheads- "Mother Abigale" Freemantle in Denver and Randall Flagg in Las Vegas. While Abigale's camp, known as the "Free Zone," represents hope and moral value in the face of chaos, Flagg runs a militarized regime run by harsh, cruel doctrine. The final section includes the "final confrontation between Good and Evil" as the two groups face off to fight not only for survival, but the future of the human race. The novel leaves the reader uncertain with the closing sentence literally stating, "I don't know." Intended to be an epic fantasy novel à la J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, The Stand is a physically large volume, with over 800 pages of text. Regardless, King's 1990 edition, published with the half-title "the complete & uncut edition," totaled 1,152 pages, making it King's longest work. Additionally, the new edition contains an introduction, "The Circle Opens," and a conclusion, "The Circle Closes," that expand upon the reasons why the government developed a superflu and whether or not King thinks there is hope for a post-apocalyptic human race, respectively.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Brant Wright Associates Ltd, Ashford 1978 - xxiv, 251 pages, 24 colour plates, 68 b&w illus., 1st edition, signed by author, 1978. This is an excellent book, much better in my opinion than the later book by the same author with a similar title. The last 100 pages are an essential research tool being a listing of all known Mercer chronometers sold to retailers, ships chandlers etc., including date of sale, price and retailer¿s name and serial number as engraved on the chronometer dial. A good copy (showing significant signs of use) of a scarce book, the dust jacket now worn and torn. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1978 - ("Buk") 1 page, July 11, 1978 to R. Sorin. 13 lines. 10 3/4" x 8 1/2". Very good. Bukowski had arrived in Germany May 8, 1978, with Linda Beighle. Photographer Michael Montfort was on hand to document the visit. See Neeli Cherkovski "Hank" pages 266-271 for an account of his German trip. In part: " - I am at the racetrack in the day time and drunk at night - " Bukowski (1920-1994) was a German-born American writer and poet; his poems, short stories and novels often chronicled the low-life and his hard-bitten alcoholic youth; poet laureate of Los Angeles.
