New York: Penguin Books, 1978. First edition of New York street photographer Bill Cunningham's only book, a collaboration with the artist Editta Sherman, the "Duchess of Carnegie Hall." Cunningham and Sherman lived and worked side by side in the artist studios above Carnegie Hall, and shared a passion for vintage clothing. Between 1968 and 1976, Cunningham took thousands of photographs of Sherman in period costume, featuring Manhattan architecture of each era as the backdrop: an Empire-waisted muslin gown paired with City Hall (1802-1811), a Victorian hoop skirt with Cooper Union (1859), a pleated Fortuny gown with the Stock Exchange (1903), a modernistic domed hat with the Guggenheim Museum (1959). Cunningham scouted locations by bicycle, and Sherman arrived by bus or subway, so as not to wrinkle the clothes: "proceeding in their unusual manner, Bill and the Duchess have by-passed the strict decorum and posture of period photography and documentation for a more playful animation." Whimsical as the photographs are, Cunningham's keen attention to detail gives the collection real historical value; Façades dates from the same era as the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, created in response to the casual destruction of Penn Station. Cunningham's original photographs for Façades were first exhibited in 1977 at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and are now housed at the New-York Historical Society. A near-fine copy, inscribed by Editta Sherman at the age of 100. Large octavo, 128 pp., original metallic photographic wrappers printed in red and blue. Black-and-white photographs on every page. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Sept 20 _ 12 / With Best Wishes / Editta Sherman." Lightest edgewear, small bump to head of spine.

London Quartet Books 1978 95pp b/w + colour illustrations. Small 4to. Perfect binding, illustrated wrappers. Very small chip to the head of the spine otherwise an almost fine copy. Photographic study with an interesting point of reference. The book was conceived after the publishers were researching imagery for a book on world religions. The adornments of different ceremonial dress reminded them of portraits of contemporary punks. The book contains images of punks juxtaposed with images of people wearing traditional dress. Accompanying text written by Val Hennessey. Excellent piece of fashion research material. .

Lengthy Autographed Letter Signed to the Akron, Ohio Medical Society

1978 - American gastroenterologist who was the first to discover and describe the disorder that bears his name: Crohn's Disease. 2 pages (front and back) on personal stationery, no place, August 31, 1978. In this letter, Crohn reminisces about how he got started in medicine as an intern for famed physician Emanuel Libman, assisting with autopsies, and his eventual discovery of Crohn's Disease of the Colon, in small part: ".My active scientific approach to medicine occurred as a fluke. Dr. Libman, who was head of the laboratory as well as medicine, wanted to pick an alert intern for the Lab. That is where I learned not only pathology.but bacteriology. Later, on the wards of Mount Sinai I persuaded Dr. Berg, the prominent surgeon, to operate upon patients with symptoms in the right lower quadrant. 'NO, he said, they are all tuberculosis.' But when I said the mass felt like a tumor he relented. Soon I had fourteen such cases and went to New Orleans for the meeting of the American Gastroenterologist Society and read my paper. I was correct - a few year later I presented my findings as a form of Colitis - but the AMA insisted, over my protests, in calling this 'Crohn's Disease.' Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Snow Leopard

New York: Viking Press, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. Octavo (23 cm), pp. 338. Signed by author on half title page. Dark blue boards with silver spine titling, blue medallion. Pictorial jacket and endpapers (maps of the Tibetan Plateau and Inner Dolpo). Jacket and boards with very slight corner wear, jacket with a few small closed tears and foxing on underside. Reviewers critiqued this double National Book Award-winner (1979 and 1980), for the way Matthiessen folded natural history, personal tragedy and religion into a travel memoir (Roberson, I295-347), but the book proved to be a forerunner in the nature writing genre, combining memoir and the natural world, and a unparalleled classic of narrative nonfiction.

Among his achievements were his records in marathons such as Freemantle-Sydney, Kalgoorlie-Perth, Adelaide-Sydney, Sydney-Brisbane and, in Europe, his wins in the Paris-Brest-Paris road race, the classic 24-hour Bol dÓr and setting a new Land's End-John O'Groats record. He broke and/or established 101 State, Australian and world records in an incredible 24 hours of non-stop cycling at the old Sydney Velodrome. Oppy went on to become a long-time Cabinet Minister in the Australian Parliament and its overseas' representative in Malta. This book is his account of his amazing cycling and political careers. In 1996, at the age of 91, he died of a heart attack on his exercise bike at his Melbourne home.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.

Traumstadt. Zeitung für die Verteidigung der Wölfe gegen die Lämmer. Year 1, no. 0 (1978) through Year 3, no. 7 (1980) (all published)

Altogether eight issues, 34, 38, 26, 43, 51, 43, 43, 43 pp., along with laid in posters and supplements, comprising a complete run of the poetically-minded anarchist underground magazine, each produced under the direction of a different editor, among them Andreas Hallen, Martin Soder, Arno Reinhard, Eckart Wähner and Stefan Saarbach, covering diverse topics from children's rights, music and film to censorship and state control, illustrated throughout with reproductions of photographs, drawings and collages. 4to. Illus. wrpps. Berlin (Landesverband der Selbstdenker und Einzelkämpfer) 1978-1980. Founded as a response to the "informational chaos" represented by the editorial strategy of the contemporaneous Berlin anarchist magazine INFO B.U.G., the group behind Traumstadt sought to emphasize collective solidarity and dream consciousness as a path toward political and social liberation, motives which are amply reflected in the magazine's surreal graphic design and cover art. As of October 2016, WorldCat locates only one holding of this serial in North America.

Herndon, Virginia 1978 - Signed "Scott Crossfield" in black ink. Typed Letter on personal letterhead is dated November 20, 1978. It has normal folds from mailing, otherwise in FINE condition. Scott Crossfield, (born Oct. 2, 1921, Berkeley, Calif.¿died April 19, 2006, Gordon county, Ga.), American test pilot who , became on Nov. 20, 1953, the first person to fly at Mach 2, twice the speed of sound, while flying for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the forerunner of NASA. He was also instrumental in helping to design the first full-pressure flight suit, which was later adopted for the astronauts. During World War II, Crossfield was an instructor and trained as a fighter pilot, although he did not see action. As the chief test pilot for North American Aviation, he piloted the X-15, a rocket-powered craft that was designed to reach the fringes of space, and he narrowly escaped two brushes with death¿once when an engine blew up and the plane split in two during an emergency landing and again when the X-15 engine exploded during a ground test. Crossfield served as an executive for various airlines and as a consultant (1977¿93) to the House Committee on Science and Technology. He was killed when his plane crashed in the mountains of northern Georgia during a thunderstorm. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
