        On Photography

NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1977. First printing of Sontag's seminal work. One of the 20th-century's definitive photography texts. x, 212pp. Gray cloth, silver gilt spine lettering, gray endpapers. Dust jacket price 7.95. Signed by Sontag to half-title page. Book and dust jacket appear in fine, unread condition [almost imperceptible 4mm closed tear to rear panel bottom edge]. No remainder markings. "Susan Sontag was an American literary theorist, novelist, filmmaker, and political activist. Sontag's literary career began and ended with works of fiction [but] it was as an essayist...that Sontag gained early and enduring fame and notoriety. Sontag wrote frequently about the intersection of high and low art." - wikipedia. "The essays in Susan Sontag's controversial collection were originally published in the New York Review of Books. They deal with the work of individual photographers, Atget, Sander, Evans, Frank, and Arbus, to name just a few, as well as with larger historical and philosophical issues regarding photography." Winner of the National Book Critics' Circle Award for Criticism (1977), this is "a brilliant analysis of the profound changes photographic images have made in our way of looking of the world and ourselves over the lost 140 years." - Washington Post Book World. "Every page of 'On Photography' raises important and exciting questions about its subject and raises them in the best way." - The New York Times Book Review. "A book of great importance and originality . . . All future discussion or analysis of the role of photography in the affluent mass-media societies are now bound to begin with her book." - John Berger. "Not many photographs are worth a thousand of [Susan Sontag's] words." - Robert Hughes, Time. "After Sontag, photography must be written about not only as a force in the arts, but as one that is increasingly powerful in the nature and destiny of our global society." - Newsweek. "'On Photography' is to my mind the most original and illuminating study of the subject." - Calvin Trillin, The New Yorker. . Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover.         FREE THE WILMINGTON 10. RALLY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE U.S.A. featuring Angela Davis, Co-Chairperson ? National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Friday July 8, 1977 [poster]

      - Milwaukee: Milwaukee Alliance Against Racial and Political Repression, 1977. Original, unbacked poster, 11 x 17." Staple holes in corners with a tiny tear to upper left corner where staple was removed. Horizontal fold line, else near fine. Signed by the collector, J. W. Miller; from his collection of about 100 posters collected in the 1970s around the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The Wilmington Ten were nine young men and a woman, who were convicted in 1971 in Wilmington, North Carolina of arson and conspiracy, and served nearly a decade in jail. The case became an international cause in which many critics of the city's actions characterized the activists as political prisoners. In 1980 in Chavis v. State of North Carolina, (4th Cir., 1980), the convictions were overturned by the federal appeals court, on the grounds that the prosecutor and the trial judge had both violated the defendants' constitutional rights. In May 2012, Benjamin Chavis and six surviving members of the group petitioned North Carolina governor Beverly Perdue for a pardon. The NAACP was supporting the pardon, as well as compensation to be paid to the men and their survivors for their years in jail. On December 22, 2012 The New York Times published an editorial titled, "Pardons for the Wilmington Ten" that urged Governor Perdue to "finally pardon" the group of civil rights activists. Perdue granted a pardon of innocence on December 31, 2012, which qualified each of the ten to state compensation of $50,000 per year of incarceration. None in commerce (2013); no locations in OCLC.

[Original Silkscreened Promo Banner for U.S. Release of NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS...]

Los Angeles: Warner Bros., 1977. First Edition. Fine. Color silkscreen on fabric, 28" x 34.5" approx. Sewn at top to allow for display via dowel. Fine condition. Bright and clean. Original 1977 promotional banner for the US release of the Sex Pistol's only studio album NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS. Featuring the iconic album cover (front, back and spine) designed by Jamie Reid silkscreened onto nylon fabric, the latter state with "Submission" included on the rear cover. "The sleeve caused quite a stir when it came out, partly because it appeared shoddy and partly because it didn't feature and picture of the band, instead appearing as some obscure, anonymous manifesto" (Savage and Reid, UP THE RISE p. 79). Warner Brothers Records signed the Pistols in October 1977 and released BOLLOCKS less than a month later - rushing the album into print in order to capitalize on the various UK Pistols controversies as well as the band's upcoming (and ultimately aborted) US tour. Scarce. Not in Burgess and Parker.

The Diary of the Reverend Robert Knopwood 1803-1838. First Chaplain of Van Diemen's Land

Hobart: THRA. 1977. 4to. 738pp. Original cloth with dustwrapper. A nice clean copy. Very good+. ISBN 0909479003 ***Only 750 copies were printed (although not stated). 'Bobby' Knopwood was with the party led by David Collins which was sent to found a colony on Bass Strait. After an abortive attempt to settle at present-day Sorrento in Port Phillip Bay, Collins moved his party the Derwent River and founded Hobart Town in 1804. Knopwood was the new colony's chaplain (serving also as a magistrate) and he remained in Van Diemen's Land until his death in 1838. Amongst his affects that were sold at this time was his manuscript diary in six volumes: five were purchased by George Stokell and these eventually found their way into the Mitchell Library (these five comprise the text of this publication). The other volume, covering the years 1808-13, was apparently bought by T.G. Gregson, but its whereabouts are now unknown. .

        In Patagonia

London: Jonathan Cape, 1977. First edition of the author's masterpiece and one of the great travel books of the last half of the twentieth century. Octavo. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the title page. A very nice copy. An exhilarating look at a place that still retains the exotic mystery of a far-off, unseen land, Bruce Chatwin's exquisite account of his journey through Patagonia teems with evocative descriptions, remarkable bits of history, and unforgettable anecdotes. Fueled by an unmistakable lust for life and adventure and a singular gift for storytelling, Chatwin treks through "the uttermost part of the earth"— that stretch of land at the southern tip of South America, where bandits were once made welcome—in search of almost forgotten legends, the descendants of Welsh immigrants, and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy. An instant classic upon publication in 1977, In Patagonia is a masterpiece that has cast a long shadow upon the literary world. "A travel book to stand on the shelf with Graham Greene, Somerset Maugham, and Paul Theroux." (The New York Times Book Review).
