        Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3, January 1917 - November 1922

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Fine. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - sixteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922, encompassing Churchill's return to the government after the Dardanelles disaster and his final six years in power as a Liberal, serving at various Cabinet posts in the coalition government of Lloyd George. Here is a full set of the three Volume IV companion volumes, all three the British first edition, only printing. All three volumes are in very good plus condition in fine dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are clean and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The bindings are slightly marred only by a faint vertical crease on each of the three spines. The contents of all three volumes are bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The red-stained top edges retain strong, uniform color with absolutely none of the typical sunning. The fore and bottom edges are lightly soiled. There were two prices on the dust jacket flaps - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after January 31st, 1978. Both prices remain intact on all three dust jackets. There are no losses or tears. The spine lettering of this edition proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning, often fading to nearly white. This set is a treat, with absolutely no fading to the spine printing. Searching for dust jacket flaws, we note only the slightest suggestion of wrinkling at a few spine ends. These dust jackets are about as good as they come. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage.         Archive of Iggy Pop original publicity material, tour itineraries, original photos, and related correspondence

      - An archive of publicity and other material related to Iggy Pop tours in 1977. Most of the material seems to come from Pop's PR firm, De Witt Public Relations, and includes publicity photos by important rock photographers, press clippings, concert itineraries, etc. An interesting overview of the immediate post-Stooges solo career of Iggy Pop. After the Stooges broke up (for the second time) in 1975, Pop went to Berlin with his friend, supporter, and sometimes collaborator David Bowie in order to tame his drug addiction. In 1976 he accompanied Bowie on tour, his first experience of large scale professional touring. In 1977 he signed with RCA to pursue a solo career, co-writing songs with Bowie, and touring extensively, often with Bowie in support on keyboards. His two albums from that period, *The Idiot* and *Lust for Life*, both co-produced by Bowie, were his most critically acclaimed as a solo artist. It's a little hard to overestimate the influence of Iggy on punk music and what follows, but we'll try. While his stage antics (rolling in broken glass and smearing himself with various substances) often overshadowed his music, his brand of hard rock, accompanied by the Stooges, and itself influenced by the MC5, became a prime proto-punk source that influenced and helped inform the mid-70s transition of hard rock into punk. Reportedly he performed the first intentional stage dive (as opposed to a long list of performers who would either just fall off stage because they were drunk or drugged; or in a few instances because they were preoccupied with assaulting an audience member). At any rate this is interesting and contemporary nuts-and-bolts primary source material from an important figure in the early days of an equally important transformation in rock music. A detailed list available upon request. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS) as President to the Prime Minister of Italy

Washington DC, 1 July 1977. Letter. Faint folds from mailing. Fine. Superb letter on White House stationery SIGNED in full to the Prime Minister of Italy, Giulio Andreotti, regarding an upcoming visit to the United States and a youth unemployment bill recently passed by the Italian parliament. In part: "You have suggested an excellent agenda for our talks. Each of the subjects is of vital importance to both our nations, and to the broader context of international politics and economics. It would also be helpful for me to gain your views about political developments in Europe and the best way for the United States to work with you and your government in the days ahead." Letters exchanged between world leaders are, as one would expect, quite scarce in the marketplace. Giulio Andreotti served as the 41st Prime Minister of Italy from 1972 to 1973, from 1976 to 1979 and from 1989 to 1992. A journalist as well, he was also Minister of the Interior (1954 and 1978), Defense Minister (1959–1966 and 1974), Foreign Minister (1983–1989), and was a Senator for life from 1991 until his death in 2013. He enacted a number of social reforms as prime minister including extending health insurance to citizens over the age of 65 in receipt of a social pension.

1985 Interpolis Chess Touramnet, Tilburg (Score Sheets)

14 (11 3/4" x 8 1/4") original score sheets in Tony Miles's hand. Two of the score sheets were not signed (Dzindzichashvili and Ljubojevic. The Tilburg chess tournament was a series of very strong chess tournaments held in the Tilburg, The Netherlands. It was established in 1977 and ran continuously through 1994 under the sponsorship of Interpolis, an insurance company. Fontys Hogescholen shortly revived the tournament series from 1996 to 1998, when the last edition was played. Since 1994 there is another annual chess tournament taking place in Tilburg, which has the name De Stukkenjagers, the field is generally much weaker than the traditional Tilburg tournament. The 9th Annual Interpolis Chess Tournament held in Tilburg, the Netherlands in 1985 was a category XV event. The eight participants of the double round robin were (in order of ELO): Jan Timman (2640), Viktor Korchnoi (2630), Robert Huebner (2620), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2615), Lev Polugaevsky (2600), Oleg Romanishin (2590), Roman Dzindzichashvili (2570), and the previous year's winner, Anthony Miles (2560). This year marked the shift in the Interpolis event at Tilburg from a round robin to a double round robin. It was during the third round game against Romanishin that Miles began to suffer extreme back pain. He was forced to take powerful painkillers and lie flat on a massage table during his games in order to participate in the remaining rounds. However, this didn't stop Miles from winning his second title in a row, sharing it this time with Korchnoi and Huebner.

Tanner, a printer himself who has published many fine, limited-edition books by some of the most important poets of our time, including Michael McClure & Anne Waldman, who are featured, & are the last survivors as of this writing, in this collection. A most exquisite production, in its rarest form & with significant provenance. Complete with protective tissues separating every broadside within the folio as issued, in very fine condition with only a vertical stain on the first tissue not effecting the broadside beneath, another small stain on inside of lower folio flap, very mild creases at spine of folio, tiny bump at lower right corner of folio, very small rubbings & creases to off-white front & back covers of folios.         Long Summer

Whittington Press, Andoversford, Gloucestershire 1977 - 35x25cm, [20pp]. With ten etchings printed in black, each initialled 'JLW77' and numbered 42/50. Copy 42 of 50, signed by Ling Wong, printed on Fabriano Roma paper french-folded and bound Japanese-style with a grey silk ribbon in Japanese wood-veneer paper covered boards, in a similarly covered slipcase with a title label to the front. One of Whittington's most luxurious and exotic early productions. Ten poems and ten etchings, both by Ling Wong, face each other on double-page spreads. The etchings, printed by Ling Wong on her own press, are each surrounded by plate-marks, making the overall impression approach a 'livre d'artiste' more than usual with Whittington books. A scarce and very limited edition. Judy Ling Wong later created 'Harlequinade' (1979), arguably the scarcest and most valuable of all Whittington productions. Fine, in a Fine slipcase, with a laid-in postcard advertising the Whittington Press and two flyers (not by Whittington) with more information about Ling Wong. Butcher 25. A collection of ten poems and ten etchings by Judy Ling Wong, beautifully printed on heavy Fabriano Roma handmade paper. Wong printed the etchings, which are in black, in her own studio; each one is signed, numbered, and dated. The text is printed in dark brown. The title-page bears the author's name in orange Chinese characters, which adds a lively touch of color. The binding is an elegant Japanese wood veneer by Hunter and Foulis, stab-sewn with gray cord. According to the Press, it was their "most unusual and successful" binding. Housed in a matching slipcase, with a paper label on the front cover. A very fine copy of an early book from the Press.

VER SACRUM 1898-1903

New York: Rizzoli, (1977). Small finger smudge on title page, else fine in near fine dust jacket. First edition in English Large, square quarto. 329p. With 412 illustrations, 100 in color. Gilt-titled cloth in colored patterns The Vienna Secession - one of the most important movements in the history of twentieth-century art - chose for its official organ the intriguing name of VER SACRUM, the ancient Roman custom of offering the entire produce of a spring to the gods. In the heroic years that followed their 1897 revolt against the Vienna academy, Gustav Klimt, Kolo Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner and the other painters, architects and craftsmen belonging to the movement contributed to make of VER SACRUM probably the most brilliant publication in the country."         Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922. All three volumes are fine in very good+ dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are all clean and fresh with bright gilt and good corners. The Part 2 boards have dark vertical striations that are clearly a binding flaw. The contents of all three volumes are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red stained top edges retain deep, unfaded red color. The dust jackets are unclipped with only trivial wrinkling at extremities. The Volume IV spine lettering of this edition proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning, often fading to nearly white. This set is better than usual but still affected. The red title lettering at the head of the spines is bright and clear. The Title and author lettering at the center of the spine and the publisher name at the base of the spine are still clearly legible, but a bit faded. The dust jackets are protected in removable mylar covers.
