The New Mickey Mouse Club Book

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Grosset & Dunlap 1977 - 64 pages, fully illustrated with black & white photos and drawings. A history of the original Mickey mouse Club with an introduction to the "New Mickey Mouse Club and the new Mouseketeers. "In the 1970s, Walt Disney Productions revived the concept but modernized the show cosmetically, with a disco re-recording of the theme song and a more ethnically diverse group of young cast members. The sets were brightly colored and more simplistic than the detailed black and white artwork of the original. Like the original, nearly each day's episode included a vintage cartoon, though usually color ones from the late 1930s and onward. Serials were usually old Disney movies, cut into segments for twice-weekly inclusion. Movies included Third Man on the Mountain, The Misadventures of Merlin Jones and its sequel The Monkey's Uncle (both starring Tommy Kirk), Emil and the Detectives (retitled The Three Skrinks), Tonka (retitled A Horse Called Comanche), The Horse Without a Head (about a toy horse), and Toby Tyler (starring Kevin Corcoran). In addition, one original serial was produced, The Mystery of Rustler's Cave, starring Kim Richards and Robbie Rist. Theme days were: Monday: Who, What, Why, Where, When and How Tuesday: Let's Go Wednesday: Surprise Thursday: Discovery Friday: Showtime (at Disneyland, with performers usually at Plaza Gardens)" In Near Fine condition with a square tight spine and binding. Clean and bright both inside and out. One of the rarest Disney books to have come out of the 1970`s, and would make an excellent addition to any Disney collection. Overseas shipping is $42.00 Registered Mail. Additional photos emailed upon request. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Edwards Air Force Base, California dated December 1, 1977. One page and measures 8" X 10 1/2". Condition: Normal mailing folds and staple holes at top left corner. Fine condition. "Dear Mr Valentine We have been notified that the Air Force Systems Command Civic Leader Orientation (7-9 December) has been cancelled. This has been caused by the unavoidable conflicts beyond our control. I very much regret this having occurred and extend apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you. It is hoped that another orientation might later be scheduled and you will be given first consideration for that program. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter. Sincerely (Thomas P. Stafford) Thomas P. Stafford Major General, USAF Commander." W. J. Valentine - Publisher, Antelope Valley Ledger-Gazette, Lancaster, Ca Stafford was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1962. In December, 1965, he was pilot of Gemini 6 and he and commander Wally Schirra flew the first space rendezvous mission, closing to within a foot of Gemini 7, with astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell aboard. He commanded Gemini 9, with Gene Cernan as pilot, in June, 1966, rendezvousing with an alternate docking target after the Atlas boosting their original Agena target failed. They were unable to dock with the alternate because a protective fiberglass shroud had failed to separate completely, but they flew three different types of rendezvous with it. Stafford commanded the Apollo 10 lunar orbit flight in May 1969, with John Young and Gene Cernan. He and Cernan separated the Lunar Module and approached to within 10 miles of the surface, paving the way for the Apollo 11 crew to make the first moon landing two months later. Stafford logged his fourth space mission as commander of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July 1975. He, Deke Slayton, and Vance Brand linked in orbit with a Soyuz carrying cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov. Stafford returned to the Air Force and assumed command of the Air Force Flight Test Center in 1975. He was promoted to lieutenant general in 1978 and was assigned as Deputy Chief of Staff, Research Development and Acquisition, Headquarters, USAF, Washington, D.C. He retired from the Air Force in 1979. He co-founded the Technical Consulting Firm of Stafford, Burke, and Hecker, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia. He sits on the Board of Directors of six corporations listed on the New York Stock Exchange, one listed on the American Exchange, and two others, including Seagate Technology, Inc. Seagate Technology is the largest independent hard disk drive maker in the world. He has served as an advisor to a number of governmental agencies including NASA and the Air Force Systems Command. He was a defense advisor to Ronald Reagan during the presidential campaign and a member of the Reagan transition team. He served on the National Research Council¿s Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board; the Committee on NASA Scientific and Technological Program Reviews and Vice President Quayle¿s Space Policy Advisory Council. He was Chairman of the NASA Advisory Council Task Force on Shuttle-Mir Rendezvous and Docking Missions, is currently Chairman of the NASA Advisory Council Task Force on ISS Operational Readiness, and Co-Chairman of the Stafford-Covey Space Shuttle Return to Flight Task Group.         Poems of Life

Watertown, MA: Bromer, Anne and David, 1977. 35pp. This publisher's copy of the regular edition was bound by Sayaka Fukuda in a quietly beautiful binding that reflects Emily Dickinson's life. The binding is contained within a folding box covered with floral-patterned cloth, referencing the poet's passion for plants and gardening and the influence of nature in her work. The surface of the cloth is covered with a very fine tinted Japanese Tengu paper, toning down brightness and alluding to the theme of death that was ever-present in Dickinson's life and poetry. According to Fukuda, the subtlety of the design reflects the poet's reclusiveness. Still, "Emily Dickinson's literary talent inevitably shines through, which is expressed by quiet but assertive gold tooling and paper onlay." Gold tooling continues, in dotted tendrils, from the box surrounding the book onto the binding, inviting the reader to Dickinson's poems. The binding features layers of pale, rippling Suminigashi, Japanese ink-marbled paper, and shining gold leaf. Fukuda writes that these elements represent Dickinson's "multiplying influence and recognition in the outer world. Despite her withdrawn life, her words traveled...as if a drop in the water caused a ripple to travel endlessly." The binder also notes that she chose to keep the page edges white, in homage to Dickinson's fondness for dressing in white. The color palette Fukuda chose for the binding derives from the final poem in the book, "I'll tell you how the sun rose --", which describes shades of amethyst, purple, yellow, and gray at dawn and dusk. The book itself is handsomely printed on handmade Hayle paper in Bruce Rogers Arrighi and Centaur types. A red initial begins each of the nine poems included. This was the second miniature book to be published by the Bromers. Sayaka Fukuda was born in Tokyo and studied book arts and conservation in London. Named a licentiate of Designer Bookbinders, Fukuda was awarded "Highly Commended" in the organization's 2006 competition. Extremely fine. (2 5/16 by 1 9/16; 59x41mm).

The Butterfly's Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast

(Watertown, MA): Bromer, Anne & David, 1977. (24)pp.The text is printed on Japanese paper with ornamentation in green. Wood engravings by Sarah Chamberlain, as her first miniature book commission. The first miniature book published by the Bromers. Midori Kunikata-Cockram captures the whimsical nature of the text, which was the first English poem for children intended for sheer amusement. The front and rear boards are covered with parchment, on which the artist has hand-drawn a pattern of vines and flowers in crimson ink depicting the insects and small animals attending the feast. Delicate onlays of black morocco create the silhouette of a vine climbing up the book's crimson morocco spine. Inside, endpapers printed with oak leaves and cut-out leaves with hand-drawn shading in pastel reference the oak tree in the poem, beneath which the revels were held. Housed in a crimson suede-lined box, the exterior of which is covered with paper hand-tooled in a foliate pattern and gilt-titled to the crimson morocco spine. A parchment tab painted with a butterfly on one side, and a grasshopper on the reverse, helps to lift the book out of the box. With the binder's blind-stamped mark to the penultimate endleaf, and signed by Chamberlain to the colophon. Extremely fine. (2 1/2 by 2 1/8; 63x53mm).

The History of Middle Earth, Volumes 1-12, and The Silmarillion

Allen & Unwin/Unwin Hyman/Harper Collins 1977, 1983-1996, London - A complete set of the first editions of these tales, poems, and songs underlay The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien began writing these tales while in college, 40 years before LOTR was published. He was a student of philology, the study of historical linguistics and the rules by which languages evolve, and in his writing he invented archaic languages and the stories told in those languages, and then tracked the evolution of both the stories and the language until they became the legends and mythology that informed Middle Earth. This is part of what gives the Trilogy its powerful sense of reality and immediacy, but the stories are compelling in and of themselves, beyond the degree to which they inform his masterpiece. In particular, these stories, most of them written between 1913 and the early 1940s, give the lie to the simplistic notion that Tolkien's trilogy is a mere analogue for the conflicts involved in World War II. If anything, it was the First World War -- with its senseless, mechanized destruction on a heretofore unimaginable scale -- that influenced Tolkien in his view that battle between the forces of good and evil was not a struggle of ideologies so much as one between a world view in harmony with nature and one that focused on unchecked industrial development. Published over the course of more than a dozen years, complete sets are difficult to assemble as all of the volumes had small first printings, and some were positively tiny -- 1500 copies or so. Volume 5 has a small nick at the upper rear spine fold; otherwise a fine set in fine, unclipped dust jackets. The Silmarillion and Volumes 1, 2 and 4 have no printed prices, as issued; Volume 4 has an A&U price sticker. Volumes 10 and 11 have printed prices on the flaps (in contrast to the unprinted export edition dust jackets, which, by the usual standards of the publication process, probably preceded those with printed prices). The ultimate history of the worlds that underlay The Lord of the Rings. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

These were printed without a price to allow the country receiving same to set their own price. Some of these may have made their way to other English speaking countries like Australia.         Peach [from a manuscript florilegium]

Watercolor and gouache on paper prepared as Vellum Circa Sixteenth Century - This magnificent botanical painting, executed in watercolor and gouache, is from only the fifth florilegium identified to be by Jacques Le Moyne to date. The paintings from this set are roundly considered to be his finest achievement. Le Moyne was among a rare and exclusive group of artists who specialized in the creation of florilegia. Most examples were printed, following in the tradition of the herbals of such authors as Leonhart Fuchs, but a few original painted florilegia were commissioned by wealthy amateur botanists and aristocrats who wished to have pictorial records of the valuable plants to be found in their gardens. The extraordinary career and oeuvre of the Huguenot artist Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues have only relatively recently been defined and described (see Paul Hulton, The Work of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, A Huguenot Artist in France, Florida, and England, 2 vols., London, 1977). The varied circumstances of his artistic production must surely be unique in the history of art; although large periods of his career are undocumented, he appears to have worked as a court artist in France, under Charles IX, is known to have traveled to Florida in 1564, as official artist and cartographer to the ill-fated French attempt to establish a colony there, and to have ended his career as a highly regarded botanical artist in Elizabethan London, where his patrons included Sir Walter Raleigh and Lady Mary Sidney. Le Moyne was born around 1533, in Dieppe. The first thirty years of his life are undocumented, but it seems reasonable to suppose that he trained as an artist in his native town, which was at the time a notable center both for cartography and for illumination. Hulton believed that Le Moyne probably worked at the court of the French King Charles IX, although there is no documentary record to that effect. Le Moyne's highly important account of this transatlantic voyage, known today from a Latin edition published in Frankfurt in 1591 under the title Brevis narratio eorum quae in Florida Americai provincia Gallis acciderunt, does, however, clearly indicate that it was the King who instructed the artist to accompany the expedition, headed by the notable mariners Jean Ribault and Rene Goulaine de Laudonniere, as official recording artist and cartographer. Although only one original drawing by Le Moyne of an American subject is known today -- the depiction of Athore showing Laudonniere the Marker Column set up by Ribault, executed in watercolor and gouache on vellum, now in the New York Public Library -- the Brevis narratio, published by Theodore de Bry as the second volume of his great series of publications on voyages to the New World, contains forty-two engraved illustrations and maps made on the spot by Le Moyne. The text fully describes and analyses these images, and this volume constitutes a major landmark in the literature of the early exploration of the Americas. Laudonniere's expedition, though resulting in the production of the fascinating Le Moyne/de Bry publication and an important map of the coastal regions of Florida, was ultimately a disaster; the good relations initially established with the Indian tribes inhabiting the territories around the settlement site at St. Johns soon soured, in addition to which various members of the French party became disaffected, and revolted against their leaders. The final coup de grace came when a Spanish force attacked Laudonniere's stronghold at Fort Caroline, and in the end Le Moyne was one of only fifteen or so survivors of the original party to return safely to Europe; having lost their way, they sailed half-starved into Swansea Bay in mid-November 1565, and finally reached Paris early in 1566. But life in France soon became untenable, due to the Huguenot massacres, and in 1572 Le Moyne fled to England. Until well into the present century, our knowledge of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues was extremely limited, and largely confined to the footnotes of inaccessible ethnograph

ORIGINAL SIGNED PHOTO [DIE TRANSFER] 1 OF ONLY 36 COPIES.

(Harry H. Lunn Jr.), Washington, D.C. 1977 - [Virginia Woolf] Gisèle Freund. ORIGINAL SIGNED PHOTO [DIE TRANSFER] 1 OF ONLY 36 COPIES. Washington, D.C. (Harry H. Lunn Jr.), 1977. The original Woolf dye-transfer photograph signed by the artist in ink & in fine condition. Image size approx: 11" 3/8 x 7" 1/2. One of 30 numbered copies, from the limited edition of 36 in all. The prints were made in 1977 by the dye-transfer process which produces exceptionally pure colors, with superior light & dark fastness & tonal range, executed at the K & S Laboratories in Chicago for Freund's amazing portfolio: "Au pays des visages. Ten original color portraits". A letter from Virginia Woolf to Vita Sackville West notes that Freund is a "devil woman", but the 1939 portrait photo taken at her house is one of the most revealing of Woolf ever taken. Each print is signed in ink by the artist on the front and numbered and studio-stamped on the back. The other subjects, photographed in the years 1938 & 1939, are Colette, André Gide, James Joyce, Adrienne Monnier, Jean Cocteau, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, André Malraux & Vita Sackville-West. A beautiful example. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
