The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn (Signed First)

Macmillan 1977 - First edition, first impression of the third Inspector Morse mystery (generally regarded as the scarcest in first edition), signed, warmly inscribed and dated by Colin Dexter to the ffep in the year of publication (rare, thus): “Yet another first edition for my very special friends, Peter and Lisa. In memory of our visit. 9.9.77 Colin Dexter”. Near Fine (or better): tight and square binding in sharp boards showing a little sunning to the spine and rubbing to the heel; three tiny spots to the ffep else very bright, crisp and clean, presenting as unread, with none of the browning that routinely afflicts early Morses. The unclipped dustwrapper (£3.50 net stated) is likewise Near Fine: bright and crisp, with a touch of age toning and some minor wrinkles at the spine tips; very small stain to the foot of the front flap fold; presents beautifully in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover. All orders are sent carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Archive of scouting photographs, color transparencies, letters, and ephemera from the making of the 1977 film)

Culver City, CA: Columbia Pictures, 1977. An archive of material from the making of the 1977 Steven Spielberg film, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." From the estate of Phil Abramson, set director for the film, whose work earned an Academy Award nomination. The archive includes: A typed letter to Phil Abramson from director Steven Spielberg, SIGNED by Spielberg, on stationery bearing the film's title and the address for Columbia Pictures. Spielberg states that, "in an article in Warhol's newspaper INTERVIEW, which (a) is read by about 19 people, and (b) none of those 19 would be of any concern to you, someone other than you, namely Joe Alves, was erroneously credited with decorating my home." He continues to ease Phil Abramson's mind with regard to someone else receiving credit for his (presumed) interior decorating of Spielberg's house. The letter ends with "the ducks and rabbits all miss you." With the original mailing envelope. Approximately 30 color transparency slides and 10 color photographs featuring scouting shots taken around the base of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, the site chosen for the alien landing in the film. Several images show Vilmos Zsigmond, whose cinematography in the film earned an Academy Award. A photo album containing approximately 40 color photographs taken during a production-related house party, with shots of Terri Garr, Richard Dreyfuss, Steven Spielberg, and others. Twelve letters concerning the procurement of various props, most addressed to Abramson, from such persons as Richard D. Zanuck (concerning a bill payment for flowers), David Brown (a fan commenting on the film as a "great achievement"), Ralph Nelson (also praising the film), Clark Paylow (associate producer), Don R. Hanes (associate at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, whose logo was used in the film, with a color slide of the logo), Robert D. Benis of WTHR Television, Eric S. Peterson of Rockwell International, Dorothy E. Bradshaw of North Central Airlines in Minnesota, William Broker of the property department at the Burbank Studios, and photocopied letters from members of the production crew to various companies. Also included is some interesting ephemera unique to the film: a "Close Encounters" iron-on patch, a vintage production T-shirt with "CE3K" across the front, and a souvenir sweatshirt with a logo for Devil's Tower on the front. Based on Spielberg's novel of the same name, about Roy Neary (Dreyfuss), who is one of several people who witness UFOs at night, and subsequently begins to have visions of a mysterious place. Government agents also have similar encounters, only they discover physical evidence of extraterrestrials. Roy and the agents join together and are led to a place (not unlike the place in Roy's visions) where they have a close encounter of the third kind: contact. Winner of an Academy Award (Best Cinematography, 1978), and placed in the National Film Registry (2007), and Spielberg's third feature as director (following "Jaws", 1975, and "The Sugarland Express," 1974.) Set in primarily Muncie, Indiana, shot on location throughout the US, as well as Mexico and India. Complete collation details available on request.

        In Patagonia

Published by Jonathan Cape, London; 1977. This is an excellent copy of this author's first book, rarely found in such good condition. The book itself is in Fine condition, tightly bound in it's original dark blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Inside it has the original map endpapers that are exclusive to the first impression of this book and it includes photographs, which the American edition did not. The pages have a marginal amount of toning to the edges due to the age of the book but are otherwise beautifully clear of blemishes. The dust jacket in which the book is housed is in Near Fine condition. It is also clean and clear of any blemishes or tears and the only flaws to speak of are a small degree of fading to the spine as is common in books that have been kept on a bookshelf and some very slight bumping to the spine ends. In all this is an excellent example of Bruce Chatwin's popular first book.

Journals: Early Fifties and Early Sixties

New York: Grove Press. (1977). First. First edition, first printing. Fine in near fine jacket with a few small tears at the edges. Inscribed to Elbert Lenrow: "Allen Ginsberg for Elbert Lenrow 1982 October 7 Earlier passages here closer to the times Jack & I visited you than now." Additionally Signed and dated: Allen Ginsberg 9/24/96 AH." Lenrow was a professor at the New School who became friends with Jack Kerouac while he was still a student. Kerouac in turn introduced him to Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassidy, who would often gather at Lenrow's Central Park West apartment for informal discussions about life and literature. He later penned a book about his friendship with Kerouac and remained in contact with Ginsberg until Lenrow's death in 1993. A nice association. .

        Let's Go Playmates (Original manuscript)

N.p.: N.p., 1977. Original manuscript by Joey Ramone for an unrecorded Ramones song, "Let's Go Playmates," executed by the punk legend in holograph pencil on both the recto and verso of a legal size sheet of lined notebook paper. The lyrics appear in every orientation, a beautiful, messy gathering of ideas--some crossed through--rather than a finished song. They read, variously: (Recto) "Let's go playmates / Hey man / Cool man / Pretty cool / Hey Mommy / Take a bath / Get a job / What is it / Hey got my ludes man / Tell me my son / Flies flies / As I live and breathe / Get me / Buy me / Do for me / Hey what's in it fer me / Get with it / Tell me / What does minimalism me to you." Verso: "Does this life look interestin to you well you too can [have] all this and more / Not another fly / Im so cold / No no no." A rare example of the songwriting process of a writer for a band whose work stands not only at the top of the punk ladder, but really in a realm of its own. The manuscript is not dated, but judging from the content it could not have been written after 1978, though probably not prior to the 1977. The final lyric, "Does this life look interestin to you," puts it right on the borderline between the band's early fun-drug-crazed songs and the later, more goofily philosophical ones. In any case, one hell of a piece of paper. Lined legal size notebook paper, 8 x 12.5 inches. Fine.

For the Sake of the Song (Signed Limited Edition)

San Antonio, TX: Wings Press, 1977. First Edition. First Edition. One of 500 copies signed and numbered by Townes Van Zandt on the title page, this being No. 418. Gift inscription on the first blank: "To Lacy / On or about Christmas 1982 / All my love / 'Indian Tom'." Wings Press owner Bryce Milligan notes: "1000 casebound copies were originally printed. 500 were signed by Townes and numbered, roughly 100 of which were given to Townes as author's copies. The rest were sold by Wings Press. When I purchased the press in 1994 from co-founder Joanie Whitebird (the other owner was Joseph Lomax), there were only half a dozen left. Another 500 hardbacks were printed and bound but not numbered and signed. Of those at least 150 were completely lost to water damage during one of Houston's periodic floods. The wrappered edition was printed simultaneously with the casebound edition, though it is unclear to me how many wrappered copies were printed, or sold." A collection of the enigmatic, legendary songwriter's music and lyrics, with accompanying photos. John M. Lomax's introduction begins by describing how Caddo Parish Studdard III introduced him to Van Zandt in 1966 in Austin, and goes on to postulate that he may be one of the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century--a claim that was a bit audacious at the time of this book's publication, but one that is today accepted as a fact among folk music enthusiasts and scholars. Near Fine in photo illustrated boards with no dust jacket as issued.

        A Christmas Recipe

Verona: Plain Wrapper Press, 1977. 8vo, pp. 12, unpaginated. Original olive stiff paper wrappers with foldover flaps, title in brown to front panel. Sewn binding. Uncut and unopened. A fine, unread, unopened copy. Woodcut illustration by Fulvio Testa to [p.6] opposite the single page of text. First edition, one of 180 copies. 2pp. TLS FROM THE PRINTER RICHARD-GABRIEL RUMMONDS TO NOVELIST AND ART CRITIC FREDERIC TUTEN LAID IN, DISCUSSING THE RECENT MOVE OF THE PLAIN WRAPPER OPERATION TO VERONA, AND PLANS FOR THE PRINTING AND PUBLICATION OF BOOK. One of the pre-eminent handpress printers of the twentieth century, the American Richard-Gabriel Rummonds founded his Plain Wrapper Press in the mid-1960s. A meeting with Verona-based Giovanni Mardersteig, master printer at the Officina Bodoni, convinced Rummonds to move his operation to Verona in 1971. The letter accompanying the book is packed with information about the press in general, and this title in particular: 'Burgess wrote this poem one afternoon while visiting here in Verona. We have been very busy setting up a bindery in the small studio near the river.... We'll have one room for the presses and the other for a combination composing room and office. The studio is located on the ground floor, naturally, and all the windows face a small, but lovely garden. ... The Burgess/Tilson book [Will And Testament] is now being bound and we expect to start delivering the first copies next week. I really am very pleased with it...'. The limitation to the book reads: 'Natale 1977. One hundred and eight copies of this Christmas recipe (written by Anthony Burgess and illustrated by Fulvio Testa) were printed for friends of the participants on a Washington hand press by Richard-Gabriel Rummonds & Alessandro Zanella at the Plain Wrapper Press in Verona, Italy. Buon appetito!'. A lovely example, with an association to match.

Ibsen (First Edition, inscribed to David Mamet and Lindsay Crouse in the year of publication)

New York: Macmillan, 1977. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED to playwright and film director David Mamet and his then-wife, actress Lindsay Crouse, in the year of publication on the title page: "For two beautiful people / Lindsay and David / Harold Clurman / Dec. 21, 1977." A remarkable association, connecting three generations of historic figures in world theatre. Ibsen, the book's subject, was a Norwegian playwright who founded modernism in theatre, and is considered the "father of realism." Clurman, massively influenced by Ibsen, was one of the three founders of New York's legendary Group Theatre in 1931, a company that altered the shape of twentieth century drama, and bringing the talents of Clifford Odets, among others, to the fore. In later life, Clurman wrote many essays and reviews on David Mamet's earliest works, and was one of the first to champion Mamet's prodigious gifts (though he was not always complimentary). He once noted: "Mamet [demonstrates] genuine dramatic gifts. He possesses a tender sensibility and a keen sense of the stage. His plays shift in focus and in aim, as if they were meant not so much to interest or entertain us as to discover who he is." Finally the inscription is poignant in that it was made the year Mamet wrote "A Life in the Theatre" (a play Clurman did not particularly care for, though he continued to champion the playwright), four years prior to Mamet's first screenplay ("The Postman Always Rings Twice"), and seven years prior to his masterpiece ("Glengarry Glen Ross"). Finally, it was inscribed in 1977, the year Mamet met Crouse, to whom he would remain married until 1990, and who starred in his important first film, "House of Games," in 1984. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket.

Goodbye Emmanuelle [Emmanuelle 3] (Original double weight photograph from the 1977 film)

Paris: Trinacra Films, 1977. Vintage double weight photograph from the set of the 1977 film, shot by still photographer Etienne George. Shown are director François Leterrier and his crew to the left on a dolly, and actress Sylvia Kristel on the right in a state of semi-undress. The last film in the original "Emmanuelle" trilogy. An interior shot, apparently meant to be a barn as the ground is covered with hay, for a film shot on the Seychellois island of La Digue. Miramax film founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein acquired the rights to the film at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival, capitalizing on the popularity of what had become an international franchise, broadcasting a unique appeal as an erotic film series with feminist leanings. With slightly wide margins as issued. Photograph 9.5 x 12 inches (24 x 30.5 cm), image 6.25 x 10.5 inches (16 x 26.5 cm). In an archival mat. Mild creasing at a couple of corners, else Near Fine.

The Silmarillion, 1982 Super Deluxe Signed Limited Numbered Edition

London: Allen & Unwin, 1977. Limited/Numbered. Full-Leather. Near Fine/No Jacket, as Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen and Unwin in 1982. This is the Signed Super Deluxe Limited Numbered Edition. "This is copy number 83 of the first one thousand copies off the press of the first edition of The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, which were reserved for later publication in this collector's edition." A Near Fine example of the very hard to find Super Deluxe Signed Limited Edition issued to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the first publication of The Silmarillion. Wayne Hammond has commented that the records, though incomplete, indicate that probably only about 300 of the 1000 were actually bound and sold. So this is certainly one of the scarcest of the Tolkien 1st Editions, and is also signed by his son, the editor Christopher Tolkien. Collected and edited by Christopher Tolkien after his fathers death. Original publishers full red leather binding, with raised bands, gilt stamping, and top edge gilded as issued. The book features red silk ribbon marker bound in, raised bands and gilt stamped Title, Author, and Publisher on the spine. The front boards features the JRRT Monogram gilt stamped in single gilt ruled box. Blind stamp of the heraldic device Tolkien designed to represent Luthien Tinuviel to the rear boards. On the first free endpaper, the Publisher's Limitation Plate, gives the Limitation number of 83 of 1000, along with the signature of Christopher Tolkien. A striking example of a very hard to find book. Matches in size and style the 1987 Unwin Hyman Super Deluxe Limited Edition of the Hobbit. One small spot of foxing to the half title page, no previous owners name or any other writing. There are no other faults to the book, no offsetting, no scratches or shelfwear to the bottom edge of the boards. The slipcase is the original publishers slipcase with the book opening edged with matching red leather. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / No Jacket, as Issued.
