Harcourt Brace Jovanovich New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. (1976). First. First edition. Slight tape shadows on the front fly, near fine in fine dustwrapper. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "Dear Ian -- believe it or not, I started writing this only three years after Islands in the Sky! All the best, Arthur." The card exhibits some small corresponding tape stains. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky, and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions.         Amazing Gerald Ford assassination attempt archive including 7 original signed pieces documenting the historic event from an eyewitness account

Amateur photographer and history buff Terence J. Cox saw history in the making on September 22, 1975 in San Francisco and did what any aspiring photographer would do - point and shoot. The result of that historical day is contained in this archive. According to newspaper clippings, Cox was standing only a mere 10 feet away from the would-be assassin, Sara Jane Moore on Post Street across from the St. Francis Hotel. This attempt came 17 days after Charles Manson follower, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme made an attempt on the President's life. Moore at one time immersed herself in counter-culture to become a political revolutionary. She was recruited by the FBI informant to help with the Patty Hearst kidnapping. After her radical friends found out she was an FBI spy, they turned their backs on her. Moore's attempt at assassinating the President was a way back into their good graces. After being arrested that day, Moore plead guilty to the assassination attempt and received a life sentence. She was up for parole in May 2000. The value of this archive is in two original photos signed by Ford taken moments before the shots rang out like firecrackers. One photo is 8x 10 and inscribed "To Terry Cox, best wishes, Gerald R. Ford" an then is signed again. The other photo is an 8 x 10 color photo again signed by Ford. This one is mounted to brown matting with a plaque at the bottom. It can be easily removed without harming the photo. The archive also includes: Four 8 x 10 black and white pictures of the scene that day after the shooting happened. Three, 3.5 x 5 color pictures of that fateful day moments after the shooting. Three newspaper clippings. A TLS on White House stationery dated November 17, 1976 to Mr. Cox. The letter is autopenned and then signed above it. In part the letter reads, "Dear Mr. Cox: . . . Long after the hard work and hurried pace of these past weeks are forgotten, I will remember the generous encouragement and goodwill which were extended to me and my entire family by our fellow Americans. It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of our great country, and I will never forget this wonderful privilege." The letter comes with the original transmittal envelope. Ford's signature while he was a Representative for the Michigan 5th district February 20, 1957. Ford signed, "Rep. Gerald R. Ford Jr." in ballpoint pen. A signed photocopy of a newspaper article on the assassination attempt Two 8 x 10 white House issued color photos of Ford, presumably autopenned. A letter dated March 18, 1976 on White House stationery to Cox signed by Mildred Leonards, Ford's assistant, explaining autopenned signatures. "The autopenned signature is in fact an authentic signature (although not accepted by autograph dealers) inasmuch as it is simply a method wherein the President's exact signature is written by an electric pen. Since the majority of persons requesting the President's autograph are more interested in their historical value than in their monetary value, this method has proved to be most satisfactory in Administrations in the past, as well as the present one."

New York: Knopf. NF/NF. 1976. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 10, 20, 24. 0394498216 . 1st edition/1st printing. Stated First Edition of author's first book, and SIGNED by the author in red ink on a loosely laid in postcard-siz ed piece of paper. The book is bound in dark gray paper covered boards with a black cloth spine with gilt printing, and with red upper page edges. It is straight, clean, tight, the red upper page edge is in excellent condition, and it has no soiling or handwriting; there is, however, a small 'blind' (no color) personal name embossment stamp to the upper title page corner. The dustjacket is the notorious gold foil finish, almost impossible not to find scratched or creased badly. It is price intact, at $8.95, and is really in excellent condition; no hard creases even to the flaps (a couple of small, short and faint wrinkles--one to upper back panel and one to upper front panel--that show when you slant it just right in the light), just a couple of small surface scratch lines to spine and lower front panel that haven't removed the gold color from the foil, and just a mere touch of shelving wear to spine end edges. Quite an excellent example of Ms. Rice's first book! ; Signed by Author .

        The Education of Little Tree

Delacorte (n.p.): Delacorte. (1976). The uncorrected proof copy of Carter's most famous book, which its publisher originally identified as "a true story" while it identified the author as a "part-blood Cherokee who is Storyteller in Council to the Cherokee Nations." A dozen years after its initial publication, The Education of Little Tree was chosen by independent booksellers as the book they most liked to sell and it became a word-of-mouth bestseller in a paperback edition published by the University of New Mexico Press. Later, Carter was discovered to be a white man from Alabama who had worked for right-wing politician George Wallace, writing racist propaganda. Carter may have written racist tracts for George Wallace, but in The Education of Little Tree he endorsed humanist values of a high order, which he ascribed to Native American traditions -- respect for the land and one's family, honoring one's elders, promoting generosity and good faith, abhorring hypocrisy and brutality. Even as fiction, The Education of Little Tree raises serious and difficult questions, but it has been taken by many as strongly promoting a healthy sensitivity to, and respect for, Native American traditions and perspectives. In some circles, the question of the book's authenticity is today less of an issue than that of its sentimentality. "Little Tree" handwritten on spine; paperclip imprint top edge of front cover; near fine in tall wrappers. Extremely scarce: this is the only copy of the proof we've ever seen, and it dates from an era when, first, proofs were less widely distributed than they later came to be and, second, they were less likely to be viewed as collectibles and filtered into the rare book market, and more likely to simply be discarded after use. . First Edition. Softcover.
