London, England: Jonathan Cape, 2010. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: Jonathan Cape, 2010. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 285 pages. The author's eleventh novel. Limited Leatherbound And Slipcased Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with all other editions of the book that were released simultaneously with it. Precedes all other subsequent editions. The Limited Edition sold out upon publication and is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Jonathan Cape: Regular-sized volume format. Black leather boards with "solar"-red design embossed on the cover and matching red titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Text by Ian McEwan. Marbled endpapers. Black satin ribbon marker. Matching cloth slipcase with "solar"-red design on both sides. Printed on very thick archival stock paper in the United Kingdom to the very highest standards. In publisher's original paper wrappers. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the most collectible edition of Ian McEwan's "environmental" novel. The latter marks a return to his early satirical vein, as he eviscerates the academic and scientific establishments through one of his most memorably repulsive characters ever, Nobel Laureate Michael Beard. He fuses the satire with the scientific quest for alternative energies, the perfect metaphor for our time, as we try to find our way out of crises and predicaments internal and external. "McEwan's background research is so seamlessly displayed that scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, busy working on the same topic, might wonder if he's nicked their notes" (Time Magazine) . "Blending domestic satire with scientific inquiry, nods to concerns both personal and planetary in a tone that is at once ironic and heartfelt. It is exquisitely and defiantly McEwan-esque. Accept no imitations" (The Spectator) . "McEwan is one of the finest literary storytellers alive. He implants in the memory a living, flaming presence" (The New Republic) . A "must-have" edition for Ian McEwan completists. This copy is Number 49, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Ian McEwan. This edition is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online, is still in the publisher's original paper wrappers, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976. Winner of the Booker Prize in 1998 for "Amsterdam". Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2002 for "Atonement". One of the greatest living writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER IAN MCEWAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Chicago: Joseph J. D'Ambrosio, 1976. FIRST EDITION. No. 2 OF 50 COPIES, SIGNED BY D'AMBROSIO AND PRINTER ELMORE MUNDELL. Hardcover. In D'Ambrosio's Whimsical and Unique Circus Tent Binding. 257 x 206 mm (10 1/8 x 8 1/8"). 48 leaves, the first 47 numbered "i-xxxxvii," followed by the unnumbered colophon leaf. FIRST EDITION. No. 2 OF 50 COPIES, SIGNED BY D'AMBROSIO AND PRINTER ELMORE MUNDELL. Creative original tan vinyl cloth over wood by D'Ambrosio, the unusual spine hinging vertically in the middle with the portion to the right becoming a serigraphed shadow box, and with strings running through holes in various locations (the spine, the wide lip at the bottom of front board, and at 11 places on the surface of the front cover), all contributing to the image of a circus tent, with taut ropes holding it up, paper title label on the spine portion of the shadow box, Japanese mulberry paper endpapers. In a sturdy card sleeve covered in Japanese mulberry paper. With 20 original color serigraphs signed and numbered by the artist. With duplicate photocopies of two letters from the artist to the original purchaser laid in at front. D'Ambrosio, "Nineteen Years and Counting," p. 45. A little creasing to the left part of the spine, otherwise in virtually mint condition. This is a delightful example of the kind of consistently inventive, usually whimsical, and always severely limited works produced by one of the most charming book artists of the last part of the 20th century. Printed in Centaur and P. T. Barnum typefaces on Rives BFK paper using a number 3 Vandercook proof press, the book is a murder mystery involving the aerialists in a travelling circus. D'Ambrosio (1934-2009) wrote the text here, which gave him more freedom in his illustrations. As he notes in his bibliography, I did not have to soften the design to complement another's manuscript without overpowering it. This freedom allowed for many graphic images integrated with letterpress printing." His training as an engineer was useful in creating the binding. " D'Ambrosio declared in his letters that the "unique feature" of this book "is that the binding strings come out of the book and work their way to the front cover frame and become part of the circus tent artwork there." Our copy is one of just 17 with the honey-colored vinyl cloth the artist originally chose for the cover material. As he had no money to purchase all the materials needed to publish all copies of the books at once, he issued them in stages, using sales from early copies to fund production of later ones. When he went to buy more of the vinyl cloth for bindings it was no longer available, and copies 18-50 are bound in canvas. Of D'Ambrosio, the California State Library Bulletin (#78) said, "this versatile artist not only designed, printed and bound his books but also wrote the text for several titles [as here]. Many were published in limited editions of less than fifty copies and are virtually impossible to acquire in the antiquarian market." D'Ambrosio's best-known non-book work of art is the rotunda floor of the California State Library, a design of "concentric circles of the alphabet with the State Library logo in the middle" that "simply celebrates letters.".

Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 112pp, 48 color and 1 b&w illustration. Designed by Carl Laanes. With a biography. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This innovatively designed catalogue was published in conjunction with the 1976 exhibition of William Eggleston's haunting photos of everyday life in the American South held at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Curated by John Szarkowski, it was the first one-man show extended by MoMA solely to a color photographer - confirming Eggleston's well-deserved place in the pantheon of post-war photographic artists, and passing the torch on to the medium's new generation of practitioners. It is a supremely beautiful document, and a piece of twentieth century photo history as well. Interview with the Vampire (Signed, Advanced Uncorrected Proof)

New York: Knopf, 1976. Advance uncorrected proof.. Softcover.. A very good copy in printed wrappers.. The scarce uncorrected proof of the author's acclaimed first book, and the first appearance in print of any of Rice's vampire writing. SIGNED by the author on the title page. "Interview with the Vampire" was the first book in the Vampire Lestat series, and one of the unlikeliest success stories of that publishing season. Sales of the book, upon its release, would not have led anyone to imagine the long-term popularity and success of this series, in either hardcover or paperback. Rice's vampire novels have also been critically acclaimed and this, her first, is the scarcest of all the books. ~A very good copy overall, clean internally with a tight binding though notable spine lean, some soiling, creasing and light edge wear to wraps and very light staining to page (block) edges. ~An extremely scarce copy of a highly important debut novel, signed by the author.

        Interview with the Vampire

New York: Knopf, 1976. First edition / First printing.. Hardcover.. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket.. The author's acclaimed first book, the first in the Vampire Lestat series, and one of the unlikeliest success stories of that publishing season. Modest hardcover sales of the book would not have led one to imagine the long-term popularity and success of Rice's later books in the Vampire Lestat series, nor did they predict the huge success this novel had in paperback, selling millions of copies. Even so, Rice's novels did not begin to approach such sales again until her next vampire novel, published after two mainstream historical novels. Rice's vampire novels are unprecedented bestsellers as well as being critically acclaimed, and even her erotic novels of sado-masochism have achieved a kind of mainstream success that defies prediction. This is the scarcest of the books, particularly in nice condition, as the gold foil dust jacket is notoriously prone to wear. ~Slight sag to text block; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with the red-letter outline faded on the spine.
